Ft. Klein (MC), the Demon Brothers, Diavolo

Summary: Klein loves the banners of the Seven Avatars and asks for a copy of each of them to decorate his own evil lair.

It was a normal afternoon for the Student Council Officers, signing and stamping, in short, normal paperwork after classes.

As the Honorary member, Klein really didn’t have to do anything, except passing paperwork to responsible members and stamping some of them, lessening the works for the Prince and the Avatars.

However, today, as Lucifer noticed, Klein didn’t really do any work and just sat there looking up the banners hanging on the wall.

“Klein.” I heard Lucifer calling my name gently.

“Y…yes.” I answered the eldest.

“You are not getting any work done.”

“Ah, sorry. I’m a little bit distracted today.”

“What made you so distracted? I saw you looking at the banners?” Belphie decided to chime in.

“Well…Can I ask for the banners?”

“What!? Why would you want our banners?” Mammon’s eyes widened in surprise.

“Well, the banners are so cool and all. I want to use the banners to decorate my Invincible Fortress, behind my throne. They would remind me that you guys are always by my side and support me.”

“Ahahahaha…of course you would want to have something that belongs to THE Great Mammon.”

“Shut up, Mammon. It’s not you alone, Klein said he wanted all seven banners.”

“I didn’t expect that even my beautiful banner reminds you of me. Of course, I’ll give it to you, Klein.”

“If you want it, I’ll also give it to you.”

“Y…y…you can have mine too, Klein.”

“You can have it, I’m glad that you ask something of mine to keep.”

“Personally, I don’t see anything wrong with it. Can we have your approval to give the banners to Klein, Diavolo?”

“I’m sorry. But these banners are to decorate the Council’s room, we can’t give them to you.”

“Aw. No way.”

“How come I never heard of this before?”

If you don’t give them to me, I just have to steal it. There’s no way I’m giving up on the banners, they would look so good for my evil lair. I said to myself and began creating a thief plan.

“Don’t be disheartened. We can’t give these in the room, but we can commission to make new ones and give them to Klein.” Diavolo smiled.

“Really!? Yay!” I immediately scrapped the plan in my head. Had Diavolo or Lucifer got wind of it, I would never hear the end of the scolding.

With magic, the banners were completed in no time and was delivered straight to the House of Lamentation upon completion.

About a week later,

“Hail Führer, may you receive-.” Klein’s minions entered the throne room, but before they could finish greeting properly, they words were stuck in their throat as they could feel heavy pressure in the room.

“Rise.”

The underlings had to try very hard to stand up, as they looked up, they found the source of the pressure.

The seven banners of the Avatars of Sins were hung in the most august sublime and august way, behind the throne. They were imbued with much magic and pressure anyone who entered the room, except Klein.

I love the Brothers’ banners so much that they’ll be everywhere I go. If a lesser demon sees all 7 banners at once, it’s either the brothers are together or their terrifying master.

A name that means peace.

From the day he was born, he would be a child of love; an evidence of forgiveness and atonement from his parent’s sins. A child blessed by God, given his gift of friendship—with a new name to commemorate it. ▇▇▇: king of Israel. A friend of God. A wise ruler. A man destined for greatness.

He could not wish for anything more. Yet with his myriad titles, he couldn’t help but feel like he did not know himself at all. Was he truly wise? Would you call his friendship with his Almighty Father true if it bore consequences and ultimatums? Is he truly a child of love if he was only a means to an end?

In the many names he had…what could he truly call his own?

He built temples, showed his faith and loyalty—committed to his fated role in utmost perfection; he lived up to the many names given to him, hoping, wanting…to find a name that he can truly call his own.

He couldn’t understand Michael’s words then, as well as the reason why he looked at him with such pitying eyes. “It would be cruel to tell you it is best for you to never know. But I trust you, ▇▇▇. With the way you are now, your prophecy will never come to fruition.”

What is he now?

“Is there anything funny in what I said? Or are the consequences of summoning me finally sinking into you?”

In the end, he had never known himself at all. Names? What use are the names he hadn’t chosen for himself? Did it truly reflect who he really is? Was he even himself at all? 

“They were everything to me.”

His loyal spouse. The only person who saw him for who he truly is—an empty shell, barely even resembling humanity, embellished in pretentious titles and monikers to hide the hollowness within; and despite it all…they loved him. Believed in him. Died for him.

“Be it so, it matters not. You are wasting your time summoning me.

…the only peace he had left is the name that he had in the aftermath. 

In his best days, he could actually feel nothing when he smiles at them back—a them he could never have. A them who will remain blissfully ignorant of the cruel fate they had.

“Simeon was looking for you. Hm? Is there something on my face?”

…and a them whose happiness he was determined to protect, even if it meant they will never cross paths again.

“Mhm. It’s nothing. I can say the same to you. The brothers wouldn’t be pleased to see you wandering alone this late at night.”

“Oh shoot—”

But even so, in the small amount of happiness he could grasp with his hands…

“I’ll walk you home.”

“Really? But you’re going the other way.”

…in stolen moments, without anyone else’s prying eyes…

“If it’s for you, I’m willing to do anything.”

One Brain Cell Theories: Chapter 17 & 18

There are a few things that may confirm my suspicions and the new chapters have reinforced it. 

SPOILERS AHEAD, please click at your own risk and any input/more theories are welcome! I’m going to try and make this a series. 

This is also a relatively long read so grab some snacks! We diving in boys!!

(This is one of my many theories. One day, I’ll be able to write down what’s happening in my head.) 

TLDR; HUNNY we have to talk about the other human 

A few things to remember before I dive in: 

Solomon has a pact with Barbatos. Solomon has a ring of wisdom and is known to make a pact with larger and more powerful demons. We all know he lowkey wants a pact with Lucifer. 

Lucifer told us not to trust Solomon in Chapter 2 

There’s a possibility Barbatos has tried to poison us with tea, a Mandragora blend. Mandragora has the potential to be fatal, one of the most notable symptoms are hyperactivity and hallucinations. 

When Barbatos sent us back in time, we found out he is extremely OP. He even has the power to look into the past and future. 

Okay now onwards to the only viable explanation I can think of: Barbatos and Solomon are scheming a takeover. (or this really is a messed up “prove yourself” challenge from Diavolo) 

Let’s begin to when shit started to get real. 

A sorta shortened (?) recap of everything that has happened thus far, please feel free to skip if you don’t need it:  

After almost confessing your love to Lucifer and dying in the process Belphie comes down the stairs and its the big reveal, everyone essentially gasps in shock. Beel, Belph, and MC run away to Luke’s joint only to get busted by Dia & Barbatos and they drag away Belphie to throw him in jail for treason (and its implied he gon’ die). Lost and afraid, Beel and MC run back to the House of Lamentation. There we have a really heartfelt scene with all the demon boys and we are determined to storm into Dia’s castle and solve the situation. 

Arriving at Dia’s castle, the pair say they were expecting us. Lucifer stood up to Diavolo & he says please, LOUD AUDIENCE GASP. No matter how much we try to reason, the only way Belphie will be released is if MC goes back into the past alone and figure out who actually opening Belphie’s door. No reason is truly given to this. Diavolo explains that Barbatos has multiple abilities, some of this includes viewing the past & future and, most importantly, time travel. 

As we continue to Barbatos’ room, he is super happy (and creepy) but gives us a very dire warning - do not interact with the past in any way or it will alternate the current timeline. This includes speaking to anyone or being involved in any type of action. If we want to come back to the present, we have to go through the same door that we end up entering through. Then off we go and we land in the middle of Mammon’s room with ALL OF THE BROTHERS sans Lucifer and Belphie. And things go haywire.

As we are running to go up to the attic, we are forced to hide in Lilith’s room, where we have a flashback (or hallucination) of playing hide and seek. Flashback Levi reminds us to go find Belphie. During this time, it is revealed that MC may have been the one to open Belphie’s door and tldr; Belphie kills MC. 

As we lay dying, we are somehow saved by Lilith (our long lost aunt twice removed apparently) and we are outside of our own body...in another one. Dia and Barbatos stroll in saying they knew this would happen & Barbatos did us a favor and revived us using an alternate timeline MC (what). Everyone is pumped we have like 1/10,000,000 genes related to human Lillith and this is their closure. 

Everything seems to be looking up and MC patches things up between Belphie and the other brothers. They throw her a joint party with Diavolo’s birthday party & give her the sweetest gifts. At the end of Chapter 18, Belphie creates a pact with MC. 

This is all fine and dandy but...is it really? 

A few things really popped out during these two recent chapters: 

Belphie is by our side the entire two chapters. Whether this is supposed to signify a new start or something else, it isn’t entirely clear.

Beel and Belph are the only ones that text us during this time. Belphie texts us after every chapter moment. 

Solomon runs into Belph and MC while shopping, randomly asking Belph if he plans on making a pact with MC. Then brazenly offers to make a pact with him instead. Belph refuses vehemently but looks at MC for a reaction. Solomon notices this.��

As Belph gives us a gift of himself (lol same), he mentions how he’s doing this for us and not because of Lilith. 

In the game itself, there’s a completely different game style. MC has more options to speak and the dialogue options have become more brazen. Almost as if...this is a different personality (or could signify MC is more comfortable with them in general). It felt off playing the last two chapters though, for me at least. 

Now onwards to the theory: Solomon is our main antagonist.

In Chapter 2, we are formally introduced to Solomon, the other exchange student. Although the interaction is rushed, we can sense out two things: he’s insanely smart and he’s already comfortable around demons. As he runs off to class, MC runs into Lucifer and we learn a bit more about this mystery boy. 

Apparently, Solomon is a wizard and has a ring of wisdom, which makes him incredibly dangerous. He has pacts with more than 70 demons (I think the exact number was 78 but I might be wrong). Among these demons are Asmodeus and Barbatos. At the end of Lucifer’s explanation, he adds that MC shouldn’t trust Solomon. 

Historically and culturally, Solomon is most known as the “Wise King.” He is also regarded as a fantastical figure, someone who is known to have powers over both angels and demons. 

“According to the Rabbinical literature, on account of his modest request for wisdom only, Solomon was rewarded with riches and an unprecedented glorious realm, which extended over the upper world inhabited by the angels and over the whole of the terrestrial globe with all its inhabitants, including all the beasts, fowl, and reptiles, as well as the demons and spirits. His control over the demons, spirits, and animals augmented his splendor, the demons bringing him precious stones, besides water from distant countries to irrigate his exotic plants. The beasts and fowl of their own accord entered the kitchen of Solomon's palace, so that they might be used as food for him, and extravagant meals for him were prepared daily by each of his 700 wives and 300 concubines, with the thought that perhaps the king would feast that day in her house.” 

Additionally, he was given a ring, known as the “Seal of Solomon,” which gave him the ability to trap demons under his control. 

A magic ring called the "Seal of Solomon" was supposedly given to Solomon and gave him power over demons or Jinn. The magical symbol said to have been on the Seal of Solomon which made it efficacious is often considered to be the Star of David. Asmodeus, king of demons, was one day, according to the classical Rabbis, captured by Benaiah (my note: Benaiah is a human, he was a soldier that helped Solomon rise to power) using the ring, and was forced to remain in Solomon's service. The Seal of Solomon, in some legends known as the Ring of Aandaleeb, was a highly sought after symbol of power. In several legends, different groups or individuals attempted to steal it or attain it in some manner.

And this is a potential plot in our story.

MC is, of course, the main protagonist of the story. We typically are. But there was never a clear antagonist. Or maybe he was playing along with our situation, a wolf in sheep's clothing? 

We all know Levi’s strangely long anime names are a strange foreshadowing of the future. We have: 

Though all titles seem to have a connection with our current plot, I’m going to focus on the first one, which seems to have the most implications regarding our current situation. I also have a sneaking suspicion that the second image with the two titles might be a backstory for Barbatos but that’s another story that I cannot fully prove yet. The third title also refers to a legend regarding Asmo and Solomon.

The first title seems...has quite obvious implications when recounting the events of chapters 15 - 18. Halfway through our journey, here we are, thrust into an alternate timeline, alone and scared but we end up making a pact with...our sixth demon? And this isn’t just a regular demon, this is one of the deadly sins. So now we have 6/7 demon brothers under our power, some of the most powerful demons in Devildom. It’s alarming how quickly MC is able to gain the trust of these demons, effectively creating pacts in the course of...maybe a few months? 

What alarms me the most is how fast Belphie turned from, quite literally, killing us to making a pact with us in a course of 3 chapters. This brings me to my first suspicion in SoloBarb’s plot: This timeline is the only timeline where MC is able to make a pact with Belphie. All other timelines do not reflect this. This placement was 100% intentional from the start. 

It is a known fact that Barbatos is able to view time and its events. It’s revealed this extends to alternate timelines when saving MC. If he is this powerful, wouldn’t he be able to simply look back in the past and find out who opened Belph’s door without the need for MC? This would be the easiest and most direct solution. 

SIDENOTE: Keep in mind, part of the reason Barbatos could not stop the Belphie situation from happening is due to Diavolo’s restriction. Barbatos states that “Diavolo has forbidden him from using his powers freely.” HOWEVER, it then leads to the question: who really has the most control over Barbatos, Diavolo or Solomon? Traditionally, when pacts are made, it means that the demon is completely under the control of the individual but does it outweigh an authority figure? In my opinion, Solomon technically has the most power fo Barbatos. Solomon’s pact with Barbatos = a magically restrictive bond while Diavolo’s rule over Barbatos = a matter of respect of authority. There is no physically restrictive bond Diavolo has on Barbatos.

Also considering how cunning Solomon is, he could have easily manipulated Diavolo into this entire plan as well.

In addition, Solomon’s strangely direct question, asking Belphie if he was going to make a pact with MC, was alarming. It was as if he was proving his own theory: the demon brothers will make a pact with MC and never him. He seemed almost satisfied with this answer and didn’t seem to protest against it too much. Couple this with Solomon’s constant approval when MC makes pacts with the demon brothers during her stay, its...disconcerting. 

Omg he even says “If you change your mind” what kind of creepy

If we consider all of this, it truly does seem as if Solomon is our potential antagonist. It seems to me that everything is pointing at him. He’s quiet enough for us to overlook and disregard as a side character, though he seems to have a certain unnerving edge to him. My god, the demons are even wary of him. If that wasn’t the biggest tip-off, idk what is. 

Also physically, we have yet to hear his entire backstory in the game or have a chapter dedicated to him. So far, in terms of side characters, we have ample interaction with Diavolo and Luke (still waiting on Simeon) but no deep dives into Solomon and Barbatos. (Which means >.> we’ll get them in later chapters) 

This brings me to the next question: so how is MC a chess piece in his plot? 

Hey, remember that RANDOM moment Solomon lent out his power during Diavolo’s house party. AND NO ONE QUESTIONED IT. Honestly, what the hell was that all about?

In regards to this, why did he do this? Some answers include: he did it for shits and giggles, he wanted to test out the theory of us having powerful magic in our bloodline, or he wanted a test run. Yeah. You heard me. A test run. 

Prior to this, MC was unable to truly summon a demon on their own. The most she could do was give out a pretty strong verbal command and the demon (Mammon lol) must carry it out. However, MC cannot fully utilize the pact’s potential due to her lack of innate magic ability. 

This is both an affirmation and leverage for Solomon’s situation. On one end, it’s confirmed that MC has huge magic potential and can properly use it when needed. On the other end, this can be a bargaining tool for the future...

Which could lead to a large plot development: Once MC gains all seven pacts (c’mon, it is going to be impossible to not make a pact with Lucifer), what will they use it for? 

MY PREDICTION: Solomon will attempt to manipulate MC into his control. Magic is powerful in this game but so are humans. A human was the reason Lilith was going to be punished by God. Solomon, a human, has power and control over 70+ demons. Belphegor was set on destroying only the human world. MC has pacts with the, arguably, the strongest demons in Devildom who are also formerly fallen angels. 

From what I’ve seen so far, nothing is more powerful than a pact. And nothing is more powerful than human manipulation. 

What will he use MC’s powers for? ...I have a sneaking feeling it might be to overthrow Diavolo based on Solomon’s cultural legend. Solomon famously has power over Asmo, the king of demons. Of course, we know the Asmo in our game is not the king but Diavolo is. Obey me! has a funny way of interpreting these legends in a unique way. Who knows if they split up Asmo into two different entities. 

but who tf really knows what’s going on

BUT

I guess we’ll have to see what happens in later chapters. Of course, this is all really a far fetch theory but there seem to be so many underlying connections to Solomon in the game. I mean ffs, he’s the only other human here and he’s SOLOMON. The very character itself is so suspicious. 

THIS ENTIRE THING COULD ALSO BE A MESSED UP CHALLENGE FROM DIAVOLO 

OR SOME CRAZY HALLUCINATION CAUSED BY BARBATOS GIVING US THAT SUS TEA BLEND

But tbh who really knows what’s happening. The only confirmed thing is that we’re still on this alternate timeline (that MC totally messed up) and we haven’t returned to our OG timeline. lucifer please pick me up I’m scared

“Solomon the Wise, the heir of King David of Israel, was renowned for his probity, honor, and good sense in adjudicating other people’s disputes (sadly his wisdom abandoned him in his own family affairs, which were a mess, but we can talk about that later if at all). Anyway, two women came to Kind Solomon with a seemingly insoluble dispute about an infant...

The real mother was the woman who actually cared about the child and would rather see him given to a lying stranger than be destroyed. Again and again this year, similar choices have been put before America’s two different parties and their answers have revealed exactly which party is concerned with the national well-being and which party does not care if the nation is destroyed so long as they can cling to power and appoint incompetent judges (no matter how little of a national mandate they have).

The most telling of these incidents involved the second round of stimulus money, which is necessary to forestall a ruinous recession on Main Street. The Democratic House passed a generous second stimulus bill back at the end of spring. The Republican senate keeps tearing it to pieces and filling it with poisonous pills so that it cannot pass. Even if the stimulus money would help the entire nation (and help Donald Trump get re-elected) it is unacceptable to Mitch McConnell if it gives anything to needy Americans or gives the Democrats the appearance of a win. A truly cynical (but probably correct) interpretation is that McConnell has decided that Biden will win the election and he wants the nation to fail as precipitously and absolutely as possible during a Biden administration. (McConnell, one of American history’s greatest villains, is like the harlot who does not care if the child is killed…if that harlot were 300 million times more vindictive, spiteful, & murderous and somehow also looked like a melted turtle).

Other similar “Go ahead and cut him in half” moments include the Trumpist stance in the national argument over face masks & lockdowns, the acquittal of Donald Trump in the Senate despite overwhelming evidence of guilt, the grotesque mischaracterization of the Muller report, the abandonment of longstanding national allies, the jettisoning of the emoluments clause etc etc etc…

So, to be nakedly blunt about my political endorsements, every Republican other than Mitt Romney should be voted out of office as quickly as possible (if you are in Utah, Massachusetts, Michigan or France…or wherever it is the plutocratic-yet-honest Romney calls home these days, you can judge him on his own merits). The GOP is now a party of Quislings, liars, extortionists, criminals, and outright white supremacists who are not worthy of holding public office. When Solomon said “cut the United States of America in half” Republicans happily got out their saws, scalpels, lasers, calipers, and scales to ensure that they have exactly enough of the corpse to claim complete control in accordance with the rigged anti-Democratic rules they have been foisting upon us. The health of the child in this endeavor has never entered GOP calculations at all.

I have traditionally been in sympathy with Republican’s stated platform of strong national defense and sufficient R&D to keep the nation competitive in the future (and you know…find solve problems and make life better). Their actions have revealed that their true motivation is naked love of power and all other items are pretexts which will be abandoned.

Of course intelligent people will recognize there is a problem for all of us within the parameters of my metaphor. The Republicans do not care in any way about the nation but are happy to threaten our collective well-being in order to take what they and their billionaire masters want. Our current crisis arguably stems from past episodes where Democrats sighed heavily and let the Republicans walk away with the living child instead of cutting him in half (the controversial Bush/Gore election of 2000, the terms of the financial bailout of 2008, and the Obama administration’s capitulation to government shutdown theatrics all spring to mind). What if there were no Solomon? What if the loud and aggressive bad harlot had walked off with the baby because its true mother was afraid of hurting it by fighting? How can we save a hostage which the Republican party is perfectly happy to kill?”

Responding to the Same Old Nonsense about the Identity of the Serpent in Genesis 3

That the identification of the Serpent of Genesis 3 with Satan in Revelation 12 is "curious" to the author should be an indication that she is missing something- not that the authors of the New Testament were liable to inexplicable curiosities. Paul in Romans says, for example, that "the God of peace shall crush Satan under your feet shortly", a reference to Genesis 3. And the vision of Revelation 12 does not merely link Satan with the serpent in passing, but is itself an explication of the prophecy of Genesis 3- we see a Woman, a Dragon, and the Seed- each of them subjects of Genesis 3. "Satan" is not, of course, a personal name. It is a title meaning "Accuser" as the author points out. But the mistake is in seeing "Satan" as a name more ultimate than the other names we read about in the Hebrew Bible and New Testament. There is a single figure- a heavenly being who leads a cosmic war against the Creator- who is variously identified as "the Accuser", "Leviathan", "Dragon", "Serpent", and "Baal/Bel." The New Testament states in multiple texts that idolatry is fundamentally the worship of devils- we read this in 1 Corinthians 10, where the sacrificial altar of the pagan deities is the "table of demons."

The one who understands the Hebrew Bible will hardly be surprised by this, for he or she will know how Moses stated precisely this in Deuteronomy 32:17- "they sacrificed to demons that were no-gods, to gods they had never known." It should be no surprise that we go on to read of these demonic forces that "their wine is the poison of serpents, and the cruel venom of asps." (32:33) When we do encounter the figure identified as "the Satan", we find him given this name in the Heavenly Court. The Divine Council is identical with the Heavenly Court, and understanding that these two concepts are one and the same is essential to a proper reading of the Hebrew Bible's teaching on this subject. When the Lord pronounces His curse on Adam and Eve, He speaks by addressing His council- in seizing the fruit, the man has become "as one of us" in robing himself in the authority to reign as a member of God's council. The "knowledge of good and evil" refers, as it does in 1 Kings 3, to a position of royal authority. The temple is the Palace of the Divine King, who is surrounded by His celestial counselors. "As one of us" refers to those who are members of that Heavenly Council, Palace, and Court.

It is in that Court that we find the "Nachash", as he is called in Genesis 3. As a noun, this indeed means "serpent." But the same is true of the word "seraph" which means nominally "serpent" and adjectivally "burning." So we should already know that heavenly beings are associated with a serpentine appearance. As an adjective, "Nachash" means "Bright", and there are a number of references in the prophetic writings to the "Bright One" who is the enemy of God and man alike. Here, I will mention only Job 41, where we meet "Leviathan", who has eyes bright "as the dawn" and who rounds out a book whose narrative arc began with none other than "the Satan" in the Heavenly Court/Divine Council. I was perplexed that the author even mentioned one of the texts which uses the word "Nachash" to describe a heavenly being whose defeat entails blessing for all nations- the Lord strikes him down with His sword, after which Israel takes root and "fills the whole world with fruit."

It is of course true that "satan" can be used to refer to persons other than the one who by custom has been called by "Satan" as if it were his proper name. But it is analogous to the title "Christ", which is used as a Name by millions of Christians even as its most precise- and biblical- use is as a title meaning "the Messiah/Anointed One." Rather than asking about what the Hebrew Bible means by this particular word, we ought to ask whether the Hebrew Bible conceives of the existence of a heavenly being who is the chief enemy of mankind- whose war against the creation began in the garden of Eden, and whose defeat constitutes a major subject of the prophetic hope. I think that the evidence for this is quite robust and extensive, particularly when one recognizes the connection between "Baal" and this being. Jesus, of course, following Jewish tradition, calls Satan "Baal-Zebub."

This clues us in- the countless references to the "Seed of Belial" are rooted in the prophetic curse in Genesis 3 on the "seed of the Serpent." The curse on the Serpent to "eat dust" is no mundane etiology about how snakes lost their legs, but a prophetic word about the expulsion of this heavenly being from the Council of God- and this is how the text is read by the prophets and New Testament authors who make reference to it. We read of the casting out of Satan from the Heavenly Court in the vision of Revelation 12. Isaiah 14, which is a literary partner to Isaiah 53 (in addition to their holding matched places in the book's chiastic arrangement, they follow precisely opposite narrative-arcs and share a number of close phrases and key words), describes the fall of the "Day Star, Son of the Dawn" by referring to his attempt to exalt himself above all members of the Council of God: "above the stars." He is then cursed to go below the earth- to "eat dust" as it were, where he meets the Rephaim and Nephilim locked away in Sheol. Some object that the figure is identified as "king of Babylon", but I would say a number of things.

First, there is no historical information indicative of a specific king. Second, the "BBL" described is the "Tower of Babylon", which takes on the symbolic role of being the paradigmatic bloody "great city" of man, and whose literary position in Genesis connects it with the cosmic sin of the rebellious heavenly beings in Genesis 6- which is why, after all, the king of Isaiah 14 ends up meeting those who were cursed after their escapade in Genesis 6. Third, he is identified as king of Babylon because his conqueror and opposite- Israel's Messiah- is the king of Zion, whose story is described in Isaiah 53. While the king of Babylon exalted himself above the stars only to be placed in the grave, the Servant of Isaiah 53 freely went to the grave, only to be "high and lifted up, and exalted." If the royal, messianic identity of the Servant in Isaiah 53 were in doubt, one only need look at what happens to those corporately identified with His pattern of life in partaking of the heritage of the plural "Servants of the Lord"- they are the "seed" of Isaiah 53:10, born from the marriage of the Servant and Bridal Zion. Isaiah 55 tells us plainly that this is in fulfillment of the covenant to David's family- one could hardly be more direct about the messianic nature of the work just described.

I could go on. I found it rather silly that the author says that the concept of the devil "begins to appear" in texts like 1 Enoch and the Wisdom of Solomon. Well, this is some of the earlier literature of intertestamental Judaism, so what this ends up meaning is "as soon as a robust literary portrait of Jewish theology becomes available from the postbiblical period, there is a concept of the devil." But this would demonstrate a conclusion quite unlike the conclusion presented above. Besides arguing that the Christian idea of Satan and his supernatural allies (our supernatural enemies) is firmly rooted not only in the New Testament, but in the Torah and Prophets, I have a larger point. That larger point is that the readers of Scripture in Jewish antiquity are far cleverer than contemporary biblical scholars give them credit for. I believe that contemporary biblical scholars- as reflected by the original article- very often prove themselves to be readers of great incompetence, flatly unable to see some of the most basic elements of the authorial portrait, and dismissively waving off traditional exegesis as "midrashic" and "creative" as if those who composed midrash thought that they were doing anything other than drawing out the deep truths in Torah and Prophets. It is tiring to find patronizing and condescending remarks about rabbinic and apostolic "creativity" disguised as praise. I persist in holding that they were exponentially more capable of reading their Scriptures than most modern scholars are.

things left behind and the things that are ahead, ch. 24

On Sunday, as they are preparing to eat breakfast, Rose calls and tells them without fanfare that the double mastectomy she’d had two years ago might have held things at bay, but the cancer is back.

“It’ll be worse this time,” she says over speakerphone as Peggy’s toast burns and the kettle whistles without answer. “No more body parts I’m not using to offer up instead. They’re saying it’ll be chemo now, and pretty aggressive.”

(Last time, Rose had decided on mastectomy without much fuss, got through the recovery as quickly as possible, and got back to work. The only real sign of change was that her repertoire of tops and suit jackets, fitted to her sturdy, busty figure, had to be replaced.)

On Monday, before sunset, they arrive in New York. Rose said that her oncologist wanted to get her started very soon, which scared Steve more than anything. Last time the wisdom had been to wait and see, the doctor advising more tests, careful consideration, avoiding jumping into anything, before Rose’s tough and unsentimental practicality had steamrolled that plan. Now they are moving forward with barely enough time for him to process things. Cancer has always been serious, even now, but this seems to be an emergency.

(His kids might have been grown, Steve was always reminding them all to have regular checkups, to make sure to get their kids vaccinated on time, to get a flu shot each fall. It’s how they caught it so early on Rosie’s annual mammogram the first time. It’s how they found it again now, and Steve is so glad, so glad, so awfully glad.)

Rose greets them in socks, her hair fluffy around her shoulders, wearing her glasses instead of her contacts: nighttime Rosie.

“I told you that you didn’t have to come,” she says, hugging them each anyway.

“Don’t be absurd.” Peggy carries her suitcase through the doorway and back to the guest bedroom. “We’re your parents.”

“She’s right,” Steve tells Rose, who wraps her arms around him again and says, “Thanks, Daddy,” before reaching up to kiss his cheek.

That just terrifies him more.

It has been a long while since they had a quiet evening alone, but with Rose sleeping at a friend’s, they take full advantage.

“Pass the ice cream, would you please?” Peggy licks some of the blueberry filling off the side of her finger as she waits for Steve to slide the container across the table. She scoops a healthy amount onto her pie and observes it with satisfaction before digging in. Her bare legs are crossed politely at the ankle although she’s wearing only one of the button-up pajama tops that Steve refuses to.

“You should have let me warm the pie first,” Steve says. Disapproval doesn’t quite come out the right way when he is licking ice cream off of his own spoon and can’t stop himself smiling as he does.

“You’re becoming quite the perfectionist,” she teases. “Are you concerned that Irma Rombauer is peering through our front window?”

“I hope not. She’ll spot in a second that I didn’t homemake the ice cream.” He is lifting another spoonful of the local dairy’s excellent product to his mouth when the phone rings. There is a standoff where neither of them moves, unwilling to disrupt the moment, but then Steve sighs and answers.

Three minutes later, he is fully dressed again, back in the kitchen to find his keys.

“And Mrs. Solomon didn’t specify when was wrong?” Peggy asks. She’s returned the ice cream to the freezer while he was gone and is sitting in her chair again, the pie untouched on her plate. “Rose was fine this morning.”

“As if she would have mentioned if she wasn’t. And risk missing the big sleepover?” Steve finds his keys beneath the mail on the kitchen counter.

“Well, then, I’m afraid she might be dying.” Despite the attempted sarcasm, Steve can hear the worry beneath her tone. She looks up at him and takes his hand as he walks past. “We did have a good reason for deciding to become parents, didn’t we? Because I’m finding this sort of constant concern quite unpleasant.”

Steve kisses her upturned mouth. “Comes with the territory, I think,” he says. “But so do the good parts.”

Rose comes home, sleepy and exasperated and a little teary from the pain that Steve has expertly diagnosed as a common ear infection, held in her father’s arms. Her mother, clad now in her sensible dressing gown (though her hair is still strewn about her shoulders), prescribes a hot bath and some late night blueberry pie. By the time she has finished her portion, Rosie is laughing.

She falls asleep in her parents’ bed, snug between them. Peggy strokes her hair.

“Oh, yes,” she says fondly. “The good parts.”

The first few sessions are not as bad as he had feared. Rose feels fine after the first, tired after the second, a little under the weather after the third.

The fourth is like a truck hit her.

Peggy holds her hair back as Rose kneels in front of the toilet, smoothing a palm over her forehead. She cannot keep her hand steady enough to shave the hair off with the electric razor that Rose insistently sent Steve to pick up at Duane Reade. She blames her age. Steve catches a breath beneath the buzz of the razor because for Peggy to claim such a thing, her fear must be worse than he had ever considered.

Steve makes soup endlessly. His mother’s recipe is not so much that as it is instructions consisting of “Put whatever you have that seems appropriate in the pot, add water, don’t be afraid of salt, keep it on the flame until it smells good.” But he always admired her transformation of what were essentially bones and scraps into something that did smell good. He’d found comfort in it, in the way she’d come home tired and still try to fill up the house with warmth for him. He knows he’s trying to do the same for Rose, even as she asks for smaller and smaller portions.

They don’t spend all of their time in the apartment, going together for Rose’s appointments and treatments whenever they’re scheduled. The hospital is better than Steve remembered, better than he thought it would be: plastic has replaced creaky and unwelcoming metal, nurses walk the halls in their scrubs and tired smiles rather than walling themselves in starch and impatience. People so often walk out healthy. Rose has a comfortable armchair and popsicles from the freezer nearby when she wants them.

He sits there, beside that comfortable chair, watching his daughter being filled up with poison that is meant to save her.

Science has given him his life so many times over. It gave him this life. He tries to trust it. He can’t stand what it is doing to her.

The worst part is watching her get fuzzy and unfocused. “Chemo brain,” the nurses tell them. “It’s normal.” But this isn’t normal for Rose, who was so obviously smart even in those furious months right after she’d come home to them, who takes such pride in a case well-argued and a strategy well-built. She takes leave from work when it is obvious that she won’t be able to manage much for now.

“I think this is the longest vacation I’ve had in years,” she tries to joke as she puts on her headphones and starts a new romance audiobook. She’s found a series that she can enjoy even if she tunes in and out.

Peggy is the one who keeps track of the appointments and medications, who consults with the doctors and then consults with them again, with slow and charming menace, when she thinks that she might not have gotten the full story. Steve is the one who holds Peggy at night as she readies herself for another day.

“I thought we had passed the difficult parts of parenting,” she says against his shoulder one night. She is not crying, but her breath shudders in and out.

“I think we got the difficult parts forever when we signed up.” He looks up at the ceiling, knowing how the streetlights will peek through the blinds. This room might be theirs at this point.

“If I could--” he starts quietly. He doesn’t know how to continue: if he could trade places with Rose? If he could transfer some sort of healing ability to her instead? If he could give up anything to make her well? But he knows that it’s all true.

Peggy nods against him. “I would as well.”

They see other parents at the hospital, oftentimes with patients younger than Rose. It is not arrogance to say that none of them have had the life experience that Steve and Peggy have. Their eyes still look the same.

Rose comes home from her first semester at Smith and gets the flu immediately. All her vacation plans are put on hold as she lies in bed, first groggy, then grumpy.

“Dad!” Steve hears her call from where he is in the kitchen, having remembered to put together a lunch tray for her. Rose’s semester might have ended, but he is still in the midst of final papers and exams. Now that he is in his master’s program, he somehow doesn’t quite have the confidence he gained over the past four years as an undergraduate. He’s trying to do everything exactly right, and keeps having to unbury himself from his work to check on Rosie.

“Can you please sit with me?” she begs as soon as he comes into the room. He sets the tray on her lap and leans to feel her forehead. Still cool, though her voice sounds raspy and there are tissues scattered around her nightstand.

“Do you need something?” he asks.

“Someone to talk to, please,” she says fervently. “I’m not going to try to pretend I’m ready to leave the house, but I’m absolutely bored to death.”

Steve spots the novel she’s tossed to the end of the bed in agitation, its pages fallen pathetically open. “I can see that,” he says wryly. He thinks of the pile of work downstairs, his notes and textbooks and the essay half finished in the typewriter. He thinks of himself bed during all those long hours when Bucky and his mother were busy, when he had finished all of his library books and hadn’t gotten a new batch, when even his careful conservation efforts had left him without art supplies and there wasn’t quite enough stretch to his mother’s paycheck for anything new. He remembers watching out of the window during all those hours, listening to the games down on the street and imagining the taste of the blue of the sky.

“I certainly know what that’s like,” he tells Rose, at which she snorts and says, “Okay, Dad, as if you ever get sick.”

How strange it is, to hear her say that. “Let me get a deck of cards,” he says hastily.

Between bites of her grilled cheese, Rose beats him at several hands of gin rummy, then they switch to War and she tells him what college has been like behind her excitement and the confidence she shows her sisters and brother: that she sat through her first real lecture and found that everyone else was already giving answers before she even thought of the questions, the time she attended a formal dinner with the faculty and nearly knocked a candlestick over onto the beautifully set table, how she had only managed to get a chorus part in the play but the other girls there ended up becoming her best friends. After enough stories and a few games of War, she is even willing to play chess with him, something she swore years ago that she would never do again. But he catches sight of the clock as he goes to get the board and realizes that it’s time to go pick up Emma from school. When they get back, Nate and Drea are home, curled up beside the bed talking to Rosie, and Emma races up to join them. He watches her with a bit of longing before he goes to the kitchen to start dinner.

He has to stay up late that night to finish his own work, but it’s all worth it.

There are plenty of visitors. The Barneses and the Starks are local, and so call asking if they can drop by often. (There’s a week where Tony shows up nearly every day, apparently having decided that “visiting a cancer patient” is some sort of excuse for procrastination. He gets back to it, pouting, when he realizes that Pepper has been handling things entirely fine without him and has barely even noticed that he wasn’t showing up.

Drea and her family come from Boston every other weekend if they can, and Emma and Nate usually trade off coming up on the alternate weeks. When Rose is at her worst, Steve and Peggy ask whether it’s a good idea to allow their grandchildren to see her that way. Despite choosing not to have children of her own (she claimed she was “too busy and too selfish” for it), she has always been an excellent aunt, treating her nephews and nieces to Broadway shows, shopping sprees, and meals out whenever they made it to New York, always available for catching up over the phone or convincing a parent of some scheme when asked. As difficult as it is to realize, though, even the grandchildren are all grown or nearly there. Tess will turn 16 in just a couple of months, and although they still think of Julie as the baby, she will follow suit before the end of the year. And even if they weren’t, would it really be healthier to quarantine them from her as if she was dying?

Besides, it is clearly good for Rose to be surrounded by the people who love her. She might let comments fly by without a smart retort or drift off to sleep if a treatment’s taken a lot out of her, but she always smiles when she wakes up and finds her family talking over one another and chattering about every possible topic.

It isn’t just family, either. When people show up at Rose’s place or the hospital, Steve recognizes some of them, like Rose’s old secretary. Others are strangers, though they go out of their way to introduce themselves to him.

“She came to speak to my class in law school,” one of the associates from Rose’s firm tells him. “Just leaned back on the desk, crossed her arms, and said, ‘So, human rights,’ and I knew immediately that I needed to work with her.”

There’s the middle aged woman and her teenaged daughter who seem to have a million private jokes with Rose although they apparently met when they spent three nights in Rose’s guest bedroom on an emergency referral from the domestic violence organization she’s been working with since after college. There’s another woman, a friend of a friend, who stayed three months after she lost her job and was evicted from her former apartment. One of Rosie’s college friends comes by at least once a week.

“She was there for me when I was going through the same thing,” she says when Peggy asks delicately whether they’re keeping her from something else. “My kids had dinner that I didn’t have to cook practically every night of my treatment because she was there organizing it.” She laughs. “Not doing the actual cooking, though, thank goodness.”

On the cab ride back one evening - just the two of them; Peggy is already back at the apartment - Rose leans herself drowsily on Steve’s shoulder. He runs a hand over her hair, which has grown back down around her ears by now. (She thinks it makes her look like an awkward thirteen-year-old, but is persevering until it’s at a more flattering length.)

“I’m so proud of you,” he says, very quietly, although he isn’t certain she’s awake enough to hear him. “What you’ve built for yourself here...It’s so special.”

“Well, I learned it from you,” she murmurs.

“Hmm?”

“You remember that time--I must have been with you and Mom for four, five months. I woke up in the night and I knew that I was going to throw up. And I just lay there, hoping that if I didn’t move, it wouldn’t happen.

“I’m still not sure how you realized - I was so careful not to move or make any noise - but you came into the room, this big shadow in the darkness, and asked if I was okay. And I started to cry a little, so you picked me up, and I absolutely--I hadn’t known I could puke so much. It was all over you. And you just went, “Oh,” and then you asked me if I was feeling better. You got everything cleaned up - bath, teeth brushed, new pajamas and sheets, big bowl next to the bed just in case - and after you went to change, you gave me some seltzer and rubbed my back until I fell asleep. And when I woke up, you were still sitting right where you had been. It was the first time I could remember that kind of love being given to me, that support of just being there.”

Steve swallows. He racks his memory and can think of a million little examples of Rose having been sick - the summer cold that kept her trapped inside instead of playing, the stomach virus that she passed on to the rest of the kids - but he can’t seem to grasp onto that one. It’s escaping him, this first moment of his daughter knowing that he loved her.

“Your friends,” he says, “are so lucky to have you. Everyone is. And I’m so lucky to have played any part in it.”

When Steve and Peggy finally go home, the house is cold and smells unfamiliar. It hasn’t been entirely untouched while they’ve been in New York - they’ve been back for brief visits, and Emma and Eric, and Nate and Eleanor, all live close enough to have checked on things occasionally - but it’s like stepping into a pair of shoes unworn for a long while. They turn on more lights than necessary, and Steve makes an aromatic stew and fresh bread for dinner.

Rose’s oncologist is incredibly pleased with her progress. The chemo seems to be doing its job, and with time and medication to help manage them, her side effects have, blessedly, lessened. She’s gained back a significant amount of energy, started working again - mostly behind the scenes and sometimes from home, but building up to the number of hours she puts in each week - and is on track to finish her chemo in a few more months.

They had almost decided to stay for the duration, but Rose’s network of friends had assured them that they could keep things covered for the next while until she is - please, please - allowed to stop regular treatment.

Peggy sits, stirring her bowl of stew and looking around at the kitchen. It’s changed since they first moved in, appliances obviously updated, but the paint and wallpaper and tile refreshed too.

One day, when it is someone else’s, they won’t know about the places where Emma and Nate colored on the walls, or about the burn on the counter from when Drea put down the Thanksgiving turkey directly out of the oven. They won’t see the traces of Rose’s dubious kitchen experimentation, won’t know about all of the family dinners and the laughter and the squabbling.

“They’ve been grown so much longer than they were children--” she says

“But for us they still are. Always will be.” Steve smiles, soft and tired and loving. “Was it worth it? Knowing what you do now about how hard it would be?”

She takes his hand and echoes his own thoughts back at him: “I would do it over again in a heartbeat. All of it. In a heartbeat.”

Planetary Magic 7: Saturn, Karma and Protection

Saturn, the last of the ancient planets, is perhaps the most maligned astrological force at play in our life. The medieval astrologers called it the Greater Malefic. It was known as the planet of death because during the dark ages, the life span of the average person was around 30, close to the twenty-nine and a half year cycle of Saturn moving through the twelve zodiac signs. In actuality, Saturn is the planet of karma, limitations and discipline, now associated with the Saturn return, an approximate thirty year cycle in our life that often forces us to confront our past lessons and gain their wisdom before entering a new cycle. Ever notice how people seem to go a bit crazy around thirty? Culturally we think its about entering a new age bracket, but it has a lot to do with astrology. For those who are aware, it can be a great period of learning and growth. For those who struggle and rage against it, and even those who don’t, it can be a period of trials and frustration. In the astrological cycle, one is not fully an adult until the end of the first Saturn cycle.

The planet is the last of the inner planets, the last traditionally visible planet known to the ancient astrologers. The remaining planets are the modern, outer planets. So Saturn represents the limit, the end of the known realm and the last thing we can see clearly. The rings of Saturn are beautiful, perfectly ordered chunks of ice and rock. Saturn’s gravity maintains the discipline and perfection of the rings. Rings too, represent limits, bindings and boundaries. Initially the ice and ice covered rocks were without order, and Saturn came in during the formation of the solar system to bring order to the chaos of this debris. That is the power and function of Saturn, to bring structure, order and limits.

Like Jupiter, Saturn has an intricate Moon system, with ten Moons in all. It’s largest Moon, Titan, is the size of Mercury. As Jupiter is second only to the Sun in gravitational power, Saturn is second only to Jupiter, making it a “heavy weight” in terms of spiritual power. Like Jupiter, Saturn is a spiritual teacher. Jupiter is expansion to Saturn’s power of contractions. They are the first of the spiritual planets, or the upper octaves of the personal planets. Saturn is considered the upper octave of the Moon, both tied together through the concept of karma. The symbol of Saturn is a cross on top of a crescent Moon.

Spiritually, Saturn is associated with both the root chakra and the crown. As the ruler of the root, Saturn relates the earth element, the physical world and all the trials and limitations that come with being in the world. As the ruler of the crown, Saturn represents the resolution of karma, and the move into higher consciousness. Saturn is the teacher, but unlike Jupiter, it is a taskmaster teacher. My teacher, Jan Brink of Unicorn Books in Arlington Massachusetts describes Saturn in such a wonderfully helpful way. Saturn is like the small still voice within. When you listen to it, everything is fine. When you don’t, Saturn manifests whatever you are ignoring in your life, usually as a challenge that you are forced to face. The metal of Saturn is traditionally lead, because it represents the weight of the responsibilities we carry.

Magically, Saturn is the power of manifestation. It brings things into form, both our karma and our intentions, if they match our spiritual path. Saturn is the master of discipline, named after the Roman version of the Greek Chronos, the Titan associated with the harvest and reaping both rewards and consequences. Saturn is often like our Father Time and Grim Reaper archetype mixed into one. In the Kabalah, Saturn is associated with the sephiroth of Binah, and linked to the divine feminine, cosmic goddess and destroyer. Saturn is the power of the primal and ancient ones in any culture – the first gods, the Ancient Father and Mother.

The sign of Saturn is the earth sign Capricorn, the mountain goat, and because the Sun enters the sign of Capricorn at the Winter Solstice, a time traditionally associated with the birth of the divine child in many cultures, Saturn is also linked with the divine child of life and rebirth. Saturn has many divine faces. It matters not which one we listen to, as long as we listen to that small voice of guidance before it becomes the landslide.

Saturn can be called upon for magic involving protection, since it binds and limits. Use it to bind and limit any harmful energy directed to you. It is not the power of the warrior’s protection, such as Mars. It is the power to simply neutralise, inhibit and banish harm. If harmful energy is like a bullet, Mars protection dodges, deflects and counterattacks. Saturn simply robs the bullet of momentum, grounding it.

Saturn can be called upon in ritual to make your karmic “lessons” more clear to you, to understand the repercussions of your actions. Saturn rituals are great for understanding what is occurring in your life, and why. The sephiroth of Binah translates to understanding. Call on Saturn to understand your current challenges.

Use this planet’s energy when you have chaos in your life, to bring order and structure. Use it to gain discipline to complete a goal or maintain a program. I’ve used Saturn’s energy to keep on exercise and diet routines, when needing discipline. The power of Saturn is well known in the eastern yogic and martial art traditions.

Saturn can be used in any spell requiring a manifestation on the physical plane, in particular this energy resonates with some prosperity magic, if you have earned the boon through hard work and responsibility, and for magic involving getting promotions, climbing a social or corporate structure, using authority and wielding power. Keep in mind Saturn also reminds us of the repercussions of all our actions, so in keeping with the Wiccan Rede and other magical axioms, “do what you will and let it harm none.” Saturn will teach you responsibility if you do not use its powers responsibly.

In particular with Saturn herbs, I highly recommend checking a good medical herbal book before ingesting any. Learn which herbs are poisonous, since one of the magical signatures of Saturn is toxicity. Saturn was known as the planet of death once, so unless you literally want to learn that lesson, don’t ingest any.

The best day to do Saturn rituals is Saturday, which is, of course, Saturn’s day in the magical days of the week. Only fitting that the traditional last day of the week is the day of Saturn. Typically Saturn is a night of fun and partying for many in the western world, before the day of worship on Sunday. This night is reminiscent of the Saturnalia, the Roman festival at the Winter Solstice, in honor of Saturn. As a festival of merriment, things are turned upside down, and slaves were often waited upon by masters. Normal societal rules were reversed.

The yearly Saturn period, at least for those in the Northern Hemisphere is the last 52 days of the Zodiac year, from January 27 to approximately March 21. This timing gives us again the image of Saturn as old man winter. Your personal Saturn period is the 52 days before your birthday, signifying an end to one year, one cycle, before beginning another. This is an important time to reflect spiritually on your life, and release all that doesn’t serve you. Yogis say that it is terribly important to maintain a daily spiritual practice, avoid gossip and live with the highest integrity, but that advice can be given for the entire year.

Try this Saturn ritual when you are confronted with the confusion of life’s problems and seek to know the reasons why. Simply anoint yourself with myrrh oil when standing before your altar or other magical work space. Draw the glyph of Saturn, the cross with a crescent, looking much like the lowercase letters t and h combined, and ask with heartfelt honesty, by the power of Saturn, to have the lessons of the situation revealed to you, with clarity and understanding. Burn or bury the paper with the glyph and then listen. The answer may not be immediate, and may not come through the typical mystical means, but it will come. Listen to your friends and family and seemingly random messages that might have significance. Listen to the small still voice within, and find your answers.

So today's talk was on who we allow to mold our thinking. God, or this world under the rule of Satan? At Romans 12:2, we are counseled: “Stop being molded by this system of things, but be transformed by making your mind over, so that you may prove to yourselves the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Those inspired words show that whatever molded our thinking before we learned about God, it is possible to bring our thoughts into closer harmony with God’s. Does it really matter who molds our thinking? Why is it beneficial that we allow God to mold our thinking? Why do some people refuse to allow God to mold their thinking? And how can we protect ourselves from developing the thinking of this world?

Consider the situation between Jesus and Peter. Jesus, the one they expected to restore Israel’s kingdom, said that he would soon suffer and die. It was the apostle Peter who spoke up. “Be kind to yourself, Lord,” he said. “You will not have this happen to you at all.” Jesus countered: “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me, because you think, not God’s thoughts, but those of men.”—Matt. 16:21-23; Acts 1:6. Jesus made a distinction between thoughts that originate with God and thoughts that originate with this world under Satan’s control. (1 John 5:19) Peter echoed the self-sparing attitude of the world. But Jesus knew that his Father’s thinking was different. He knew that God wanted him to brace himself for the suffering and death that awaited him. Jesus' instant reply was a clear rejection of that worldly thinking, in favor of the thinking of his father. It's not always easy to align our thinking or viewpoint to God's. Actually, doing so requires a deliberate effort. On the other hand, it's all too easy to absorb the world’s thinking. That is because the spirit of the world is all around us. (Eph. 2:2) and because it often appeals to self-interest, the world’s way of thinking can be enticing.

Why might some actually resist allowing someone to mold their thinking? It's a growing trend lately, this whole "do what you want", "don't let anyone tell you what to do", “I think for myself,” movement. They want to make their own decisions and that is proper to do so. They do not wish to be controlled, nor do they want to surrender their individuality. But really, even the most independent of thinkers cannot avoid being influenced. Whether contemplating something so profound as the origin of life or simply deciding what to wear, people are to some degree affected by others. We can, however, choose whom we will allow to influence us. We're not giving up our individuality by molding our view point and thinking to that of God's. Much the opposite. 2 Corinthians 3:17 brings out that where the spirit of God is, there is freedom. God allowed us the freedom to develop unique personalities, and interestes. But there are some restrictions. When it comes to issues of right and wrong, God wants us to be guided by his thinking as revealed in his Word. Is this overly restrictive, or is it beneficial?

Considering something everyone of us is familiar with. That of parents and children. Parents set rules, rules to protect and guide their children. They try to instill values in them to be honest, considerate, and kind people. They're not being restrictive, no, they're trying to raise their children to be capable adults. If the children choose to live within the values that they learned from their parents, they will be more likely to make decisions that they will not later regret. As a result, they will be free from many self-induced troubles and anxieties. God is that parent. He is our Father. Like a good parent, God wants his children to have the most fulfilling life possible. He therefore provides basic principles for moral conduct and for behavior toward others. In such matters he invites us to cultivate his very way of thinking and to share his values. It helps us make choices that lead to happiness while still allowing us to blossom as individuals. In the long run, it is beneficial for us.

While the world as tried to offer advice on moral conduct, family relationships, job satisfaction, and other aspects of life. Much of it is out of harmony with godsG thinking. For example, self-promotion is often encouraged. So is tolerance of sexual immorality. Separation and divorce for frivolous reasons are sometimes advised as a means of achieving greater happiness. Not even the growing advancing technology, or higher education (nothing can be as high as learning about God though. Isa. 55:9) but none of it has been able to solve the major problems that stand in the way of happiness, such as war, racism, and crime. Moses, for example, was educated “in all the wisdom of the Egyptians,” he looked to God for “a heart of wisdom.” (Acts 7:22; Ps. 90:12) He also petitioned God: “Make me know your ways.” (Ex. 33:13) The apostle Paul was an intelligent and learned man, yet, when it came to matters of principle, he rejected worldly wisdom. Instead, he based his reasoning on the Scriptures.

So how can we avoid having how thoughts molded to the world? For one, we must stop taking into our minds ideas or viewpoints that are in opposition to God’s. And we need to start taking in God's thoughts, his words through the Bible. We need to dwell and meditate on how He views things. We cant serve two masters. But it's impossible to avoid contact with the world entirely, after all kids need to go to school, and we need to go to work. Some exposure to its ideas is inescapable. However, where contact with ungodly views is unavoidable, we certainly need not entertain them or accept them. Like Jesus, we should be quick to reject thoughts that serve Satan’s purpose.

But we can protect ourselves from unnecessary exposure. One way, is that we should exercise caution when choosing our close friends. The Bible warns that if we keep close company with people who do not worship God, their thinking will rub off on us. Take King Solomon for example. God gave him wisdom. But King Solomon was influenced by his foreign wives and was lead astray from God to worship false ones. Another thing is by being selective when choosing entertainment. By rejecting entertainment that promotes the theory of evolution, violence, or immorality, we avoid poisoning our thinking with ideas that are against the knowledge of God. We need to be very careful. Satan likes to make things appear harmless, sudtle. For example, a news report might be angled in such a way so as to favor certain political opinions. Some movies and books promote the “me first” and “family first” philosophies, making them seem reasonable, appealing, even right. Even some children’s stories, though otherwise unobjectionable, may subtly lay the groundwork for accepting immoral behavior. One of the lady's in my congregation, who has a 5 year old, mentioned that Clifford, you know, the big red dog, well in one of the books recently has mentioned Cliffords dad having a boyfriend. Even directed to little kids now, they're trying to make it all acceptable. The feminist movement, one I'll admit I got caught up in, while the idea is great- considering God had intended women to be respected and treated equal- has a few snares. One is the topic of abortion. They cover it with the saying "Her body, her choice" But that's that same selfish reasoning that Peter had showed.

Remember, there are basically two sources of information—God and the world under Satan’s control. By which source are we being molded? The answer is, the source from which we obtain information. If we take in the world’s ideas, these will mold our thinking, inclining us toward fleshly points of view and behavior. That is why it is vital that we guard what we allow our minds to dwell on.

A line as the closing line from Today’s chapter of the Scriptures from the New Testament Letter of James:

My brothers and sisters, do not encourage a large number of you to become teachers because teachers will be held to a higher standard. We all stumble along the way. If a person never speaks hurtful words or shouts in anger or profanity, then he has achieved perfection. The one who can control his tongue can also control the rest of his body. It’s like when we place a metal bit into a horse’s mouth to ride it; we can control its entire body with the slightest movement of our hands. Have you ever seen a massive ship sailing effortlessly across the water? Despite its immense size and the fact that it is propelled by mighty winds, a small rudder directs the ship in any direction the pilot chooses. It’s just the same with our tongues! It’s a small muscle, capable of marvelous undertakings.

And do you know how many forest fires begin with a single ember from a small campfire? The tongue is a blazing fire seeking to ignite an entire world of vices. The tongue is unique among all parts of the body because it is capable of corrupting the whole body. If that were not enough, it ignites and consumes the course of creation with a fuel that originates in hell itself. Humanity is capable of taming every bird and beast in existence, even reptiles and sea creatures great and small. But no man has ever demonstrated the ability to tame his own tongue! It is a spring of restless evil, brimming with toxic poisons. Ironically this same tongue can be both an instrument of blessing to our Lord and Father and a weapon that hurls curses upon others who are created in God’s own image. One mouth streams forth both blessings and curses. My brothers and sisters, this is not how it should be. Does a spring gush crystal clear freshwater and moments later spurt out bitter salt water? My brothers and sisters, does a fig tree produce olives? Is there a grapevine capable of growing figs? Can salt water give way to freshwater?

Who in your community is understanding and wise? Let his example, which is marked by wisdom and gentleness, blaze a trail for others. If your heart is one that bleeds dark streams of jealousy and selfishness, do not be so proud that you ignore your depraved state. The wisdom of this world should never be mistaken for heavenly wisdom; it originates below in the earthly realms, with the demons. Any place where you find jealousy and selfish ambition, you will discover chaos and evil thriving under its rule. Heavenly wisdom centers on purity, peace, gentleness, deference, mercy, and other good fruits untainted by hypocrisy. The seed that flowers into righteousness will always be planted in peace by those who embrace peace.

The Letter of James, Chapter 3 (The Voice)

Today’s paired chapter of the Testaments is chapter 22 of First Chronicles where King David speaks to his son Solomon about building the Temple in Jerusalem and bringing the sacred Ark of the Covenant into the heart of its inner room, which also represents the way we invite the Spirit of our Creator to reside within our own in the True illumination of the Son:

David ordered all the resident aliens in the land to come together; he sent them to the stone quarries to cut dressed stone to build The Temple of God. He also stockpiled a huge quantity of iron for nails and bracings for the doors of the gates, more bronze than could be weighed, and cedar logs past counting (the Sidonians and Tyrians shipped in huge loads of cedar logs for David).

David was thinking, “My son Solomon is too young to plan ahead for this. But the sanctuary that is to be built for God has to be the greatest, the talk of all the nations; so I’ll get the construction materials together.” That’s why David prepared this huge stockpile of building materials before he died. Then he called in Solomon his son and commanded him to build a sanctuary for the God of Israel.

David said to Solomon, “I wanted in the worst way to build a sanctuary to honor my God. But God prevented me, saying, ‘You’ve killed too many people, fought too many wars. You are not the one to honor me by building a sanctuary—you’ve been responsible for too much killing, too much bloodshed. But you are going to have a son and he will be a quiet and peaceful man, and I will calm his enemies down on all sides. His very name will speak peace—that is, Solomon, which means Peace—and I’ll give peace and rest under his rule. He will be the one to build a sanctuary in my honor. He’ll be my royal adopted son and I’ll be his father; and I’ll make sure that the authority of his kingdom over Israel lasts forever.’

“So now, son, God be with you. God-speed as you build the sanctuary for your God, the job God has given you. And may God also give you discernment and understanding when he puts you in charge of Israel so that you will rule in reverent obedience under God’s Revelation. That’s what will make you successful, following the directions and doing the things that God commanded Moses for Israel. Courage! Take charge! Don’t be timid; don’t hold back. Look at this—I’ve gone to a lot of trouble to stockpile materials for the sanctuary of God: a hundred thousand talents (3,775 tons) of gold, a million talents (37,750 tons) of silver, tons of bronze and iron—too much to weigh—and all this timber and stone. And you’re free to add more. And workers both plentiful and prepared: stonecutters, masons, carpenters, artisans in gold and silver, bronze and iron. You’re all set—get to work! And God-speed!”

David gave orders to all of Israel’s leaders to help his son Solomon, saying, “Isn’t it obvious that your God is present with you; that he has given you peaceful relations with everyone around? My part in this was to put down the enemies, subdue the land to God and his people; your part is to give yourselves, heart and soul, to praying to your God. So get moving—build the sacred house of worship to God! Then bring the Chest of the Covenant of God and all the holy furnishings for the worship of God into the sanctuary built in honor of God.”

my personal reading of the Scriptures for Thursday, january 21 of 2021 with a paired chapter from each Testament of the Bible, along with Today’s Psalms and Proverbs

In our Torah portion this week (i.e., parashat Bo) we read about the institution of the Passover and the final terrible plague that was to befall the Egyptians on the Passover night. When we think of this time, we may imagine God “passing over” those houses that had the blood of the lamb smeared on their doorposts, though it might better be said that God passed into the homes of those who trusted him, while he withdrew His Presence from those that did not...

To see this note that two different words are used that can be translated as “pass over.” First, God said, "I will pass over (i.e., avar: עֲבַר) the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments; I am the LORD" (Exod. 12:12). But directly after saying this, God promised to “pass over” (i.e., pasach: פָּסַח) the homes of those who trusted in him to impart his protection from the plague of death: "The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over to you (lit. עֲלֵכֶם, ‘upon you’), and no plague will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt" (Exod. 12:13). In other words, when God would see the blood of the Passover lamb, he would pass over to enter the house and “cover” its occupants from the judgment of death.

The blood of the Passover lamb sheltered people from the plague of death by atoning for their sin by means of a substitutionary sacrifice. The Torah states that “the life (i.e., nefesh: נֶפֶשׁ, or ‘soul’) of the flesh is in the blood” (Lev. 17:11), and therefore death represents the separation of the soul from the body. The life blood of a sacrificial lamb was therefore offered in exchange for the death and destruction of others. Eating the lamb “roasted by fire” meant identifying with the death offered in exchange for your own; eating matzah, or unleavened bread, signified being delivered in haste, apart from the “rise of the flesh” or human design; and eating maror, or bitter herbs, recalled the bitterness of our slavery...

The first time the word “blood” (דָם) occurs in the Scriptures concerns the death of Abel, the son of Adam and Eve who was murdered by his brother Cain. After Abel’s blood was shed, the LORD confronted Cain and said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying to me from the ground” (Gen. 4:10). Since blood is the carrier of life, it bears the energy and vitality of life: it has its own spiritual “voice.” Likewise, the blood of Yeshua, the true Lamb of God who died upon the cross, speaks on our behalf, and reverses the power of death by creating a barrier that death can no longer cross, since the death of the sacrificial victim “exchanges” the merit and power of life. Unlike the blood of Abel that “cries out” for justice, the blood of Yeshua cries out for mercy (Heb. 12:24). Putting our trust in the provision of God’s sacrifice causes His wrath (or righteous judgment) to pass over while simultaneously extending love to the sinner.... This is the essential message of the gospel itself, that we have atonement through the sacrificial death, burial, and resurrection of Yeshua our Savior, the great Lamb of God (שׂה האלהים). As Yeshua said, "I tell you the solemn truth, the one who hears my message and believes the One who sent me has eternal life (חַיֵּי עוֹלָם) and will not be condemned, but has passed over (i.e., μετά + βαίνω, lit., "crossed over" [עָבַר]) from death to life" (John 5:24). It was in the midst of the “dark cloud” that Yeshua made intercession for us (Matt. 27:45). The idea of substitutionary atonement is surely mysterious, but ultimately the message is simple: God loves you and has made a way for you to be eternally accepted -- despite your sin... That’s the “good news” of the cross, after all. That’s what Yeshua meant when he said, "Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life (חַיֵּי עוֹלָם). For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him" (John 3:14-17). Humanity as a whole has been "bitten by the snake" and needs to be delivered from its deadly venom. Just as the image made in the likeness of the destroying snake was lifted up for Israel's healing, so the One made in the likeness of sinful flesh was to be lifted up as the Healer of the world (Rom. 8:3). The Prayer of Moses

“O satisfy us early with thy mercy; that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.” (Psalm 90:14)

This majestic yet reflective psalm is the oldest of all psalms. The superscript of the psalm identifies it as “a prayer of Moses, the man of God.” While we are not directly told to do so, it is helpful to consider this psalm as the dying song of this man of God as he reflected back on his long life, including the 40 years in Egypt, the 40 years in Midian, and most importantly the recent 40 years of wilderness wanderings. As we survey this psalm, think of Moses pondering his life’s work shortly before he died.

The first stanza of the psalm (vv. 1-2) contrasts the unchanging eternity of the Lord, “even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God” (v. 2), with the perpetual changes of the recent wilderness wandering in which the people had no “dwelling place” (v. 1). The next stanza (vv. 3-6) notes the frailty of man and the death of a whole generation. But God is the ever-living One; His years do not fail (v. 4). God is also a holy God, justly exercising righteous wrath. The open iniquities and secret sins of all mankind, particularly the people of God, merit His judgment (vv. 7-8).

In verses 9-12 we see the transient, carnal experiences of man contrasted with the permanent, spiritual nature of God. We need to recognize the intensity of His anger (v. 11) and govern our lives accordingly. “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom” (v. 12).

Perhaps the climax of this psalm is reflected in verses 13-15, where we see the beauty of the Lord our God described as the crowning adornment of human character. The only assurance of the permanent establishment of the work of a man is in its identity with the work of God. Our request of God should be: “Establish thou the work of our hands upon us” (v. 17).
