Lottie Matthews x F!reader
Summary: After Jackie passes the lead to Lottie for a few weeks, the rest of the team isn't so happy
Tumblr media
It felt more like a nightmare to be honest
while the girls were spending the last of their energy every day training all day and arriving at their respective homes only in the early hours of the morning, some getting scolded by their parents but in the end it would pay off, it probably couldn't get any worse
Jackie Taylor was in charge of being the leader this year, but she didn't have the golden patience to be the leader, you and Shauna had a little fight a while ago for a silly reason, and in training you had to train together forcibly, and Jackie didn't know deal with that
" Don't you look where you are, you idiot?" Shauna shouts from the other side of the lawn, attracting the attention of Laura Lee and Natalie who sighs "Fuck you shauna" you retaliate rolling your eyes" Are you too busy looking at your girlfriend or some shit?" "Stop!" Jackie screams when she sees how close you and Shauna are, her screams making no difference
"Maybe you should go and have sex with the boys your best friend looks for you, that way your mouth will be too busy for you to talk shit" you retort "Randy, his name isn't he?" You step back when you see Jackie running to at least try to alleviate the situation that seemed like it couldn't get any worse
Shauna approaches you and for a second it looks like she's going to hit you, then dramatically Jackie jumps in front of you and lands embarrassingly on the ground before Shauna can take it out on you, a loud scream echoing out and making everyone on the lawn look at Jackie, damn it. she looked destroyed there
"You are an idiot Jackie?" natalie screams
and this caused a lot of problems, since the beginning of the year, the team wouldn't stop fighting, every time they got together and it became a law, not to put you or taissa with shauna, or it could turn into a murder, and jackie was the only person who put order there
Jackie's leg seemed to be twisted, it was a real horror, on one side Laura Lee was praying, on the other Misty was trying to touch Jackie's leg and the coach was roughly pushing her away, the rest of the girls looked like statues as they looked at you and Shauna
Jackie made all the girls gather at her hospital bed, receiving sighs and low curses over her, it looked like a wake and no one even knew what they were doing there
And it was worse than some thought, she started giving a speech about you and shauna having to be friends and some shit like that, and started saying that she would probably never walk again that it showed she cared about the team "That doesn't even make sense" Taissa says and is interrupted "Please let me finish"
"I'm going to choose someone to be the leader" "For just a while of course, no one can replace me" Mari closes her eyes and rubs her temples when she sees laura lee raise her hand
"And the chosen person is the most trustworthy here, I would choose Laura Lee but...I think she is too good for that?" Jackie gives Laura Lee a smile when she sees her frown with a disappointed expression
"Lottie"
" You have got to be kidding"
𐂂
"Mari, you're not catching the ball, try again now with Gen"
That was the phrase that Lottie kept repeating over and over for the last 2 hours of training that seemed to turn into 10 hours, the team formation being extremely confused without Jackie, which was to be expected.
"I swear if I hear that word again I'll have wished I was Jackie" Van says, leaning on the goal rail
"We can't go on like this, I know Jackie was too important to lead us, but nationals are coming up" Lottie murmurs breathlessly "I'm going to have to be tough with you guys"
"What the fuck is this lottie?" nat starts to protest running over to lottie and rolling her eyes " You think you're fucking Tommy Shelby?" Natalie says raising an eyebrow
"Who is this" "It doesn't matter"
" The next person who loses the ball will have to walk the length of the pitch 3 times" Lottie says firmly
All the girls sigh but Lottie is unfazed by the curses, insults and even things almost being thrown in her face directly by Van "Are you kidding me?" Taissa snorts and looks at you "Your girlfriend is crazy! We should do some ritual to get Jackie back"
"Nothing to complain about, let's see if Mari doesn't lose the ball now" lottie and mari exchange looks and mari gives an arrogant smile and rolls her eyes, positioning herself while lottie returns to her seat
Training continues and the ball passes from Natalie to Mari, for the first time in the game, and Lottie raises an eyebrow, analyzing
You run to the other side and try to pull the ball from mari, who was already close to your goal, putting strength in your legs that you swear are going to roll over. Now you get closer to mari's legs and are about to turn the ball over when mari gives you One final push and the ball lands in the goal easily, damn it.
The whistle blows and you whimper looking at the girls running to the water fountain, you run to Lottie "I don't want to do this shit" you mumble, shaking your head in denial repeatedly "You are not going" Your eyes widen in genuine surprise and you raise an eyebrow
While the rest of the girls enter, some talking and others panting drinking water, Laura Lee is the first to arrive and sits on the floor "Why isn't she running yet" Shauna's voice resonates "She doesn't need to run" silence
"What!" Mari shouts entering "But would I have to run?" she snorts, crossing her arms "I changed my mind, let's start with who lost the ball for the first time" Lottie says firmly
"If that's so then, she should start in the last training she let Laura Lee fall" they all nod and look at you "It's been a long time, just accept it, besides, Laura Lee is always in the front getting in the way"
Laura Lee widens her eyes and looks away "No offense" she looks at Laura Lee and raises her thumb which is ignored
" That was 4 days ago" Taisa argues to Lottie and she just denies it "That doesn't justify it"
"You're only doing this because she's your girlfriend"
"No, she has this privilege because she's my girlfriend, it's different" Lottie says bluntly
"lottie!"

a few yellowjackets relationships i feel are underrated
shauna and javi. i wish we got more of that before things went to shit :(
adult timeline misty and tai. like... guys. adult! misty knows what she’s about (at least pre season 2 finale). she’s brutal and efficient and cheerful about it. and tai is also brutal and trying to remain cheerful about it, both consciously and unconsciously. misty is actually the one of the group who had her shit together best despite it looking like it was tai. and that is something i would LOVE more of :)
sammy and simone and existing within the narrative! i miss them :(
teen van and travis. like i’m sorry, you expect me NOT to be obsessed with the idea of a weird friendship between the team lesbian and the very awkward straight guy who both make awful jokes and also at different points were drinking ALL the cult flavoraid? not a chance
i really hope we get to see teen! shauna being very visibly jealous and bitchy to nat about being the antler queen and nat bringing out some of her Worst Fights With Jackie energy :3
coach ben and javi! i know it’s not super plausible because of how ben spent a lot of season 1 bedridden from Misty Poisoning Him All the Time, but i want to see ben trying hard for this awkward little guy whose older brother is trying his best but really is not in a state to help much.
teen shauna and travis because, like, i’m sorry. the bond of Taking the First Bite Out of Your Loved One runs strong
adult misty and jeff. jeff’s like “i don’t think shauna even likes me that much” and misty’s like “lol yeah. no one ever liked me much, but they NEEDED me. that’s what you’re going for, jeffy boy”
lisa and callie! like... please. for the love of god, let callie have some influences in her life that aren’t just her family and her clueless friend and that pedo cop. lisa would be a really good influence on her and it might help lisa deal with her loss
there are many reasons we can’t have this, but i wish that crystal got to hang out with van. they would have had fun, i think
all of the ghosts with more screen time! give me ghost crystal and ghost nat and ghost javi and ghost travis and MORE ghost laura lee and ghost jackie. love me some ghosts :D

Chapter 1 // Chapter 3
Tumblr media
3 Years Later
After moving a whole county away, Highland Ohio to be exact, you stayed for quite some time. Your aunt was amazing and the sweetest woman you’d ever known, and living with her was a breeze. She’d even gotten you a job at the auto shop her recently deceased husband left to her, which you loved. Life was good, for a while. You never had a reason to come home until your momma got sick.
For the past year you watched as your momma slowly faded away until the last week of April when she finally passed in her sleep. You were devastated, of course, but not only because of her death. She didn’t have much to her name besides a couple thousand in the bank and the house you’d left so long ago, which she left all to you.
The house was old. White paneling a faint tint of brown, grey shutters that were almost all off their hinges and rust anywhere you looked. It was a fixer upper and there’s no way you could sell it in its current condition. So, you decided to move back to Knockemstiff, just for the time being.
In all honesty, you’d grown to hate that town. Nothing but bad memories and any good memories you’d had were tarnished completely. So, once the house was decent enough to sell, you were out of there and back to the life you’d created in Highland.
Your aunt and you drove together in her pick up truck back to the house after your momma passed. She helped you unload your stuff and take things to the necessary rooms.
“Are you sure you don’t want me to stay? I can make my famous pancakes. I know you love’em.” She grinned.
“As tempting as that sounds, I’m fine. Please, I insist you go now before it gets dark.” You pull your aunt into a hug, a tight hug.
“I’m gonna miss havin’ you around, kiddo.” She sighed, her breath fanning over your neck.
“It’s only for a few months. I’ll be back to annoying you in no time, oldie.”
“Hey, I’m not old.” She laughed and pointed her finger at you sternly but still in a lighthearted way.
“And I’m not a kid.”
She laughed a little more then sighed, “Well, I guess I’ll head out. Call me if you need anything and don’t forget to go down to Billy’s tomorrow. He’s excited to bring you in.”
You smiled, “How could I forget? I need some sort of income to fix this craphole up.”
You walked your aunt to her car and waved her goodbye as she drove way. Your eyes welled up but you made sure not to cry in front of her or she’d never leave.
Once you went back in, you immediately got to work. Starting in the kitchen, you didn’t have much but a few coffee cups. The house was still occupied with your momma’s things and you were already dreading having to go through it all.
Things started to come together room by room as you worked most of the day away. You cleaned and rearranged things to your liking now that it was your house. It felt almost empowering to do what you want. You’d never lived alone so, in a way, this was an adventure as well.
You took your old room instead of the master, since that’s where your momma passed. It gave you goosebumps just thinking about and you knew you’d never get any sleep if you stayed in there. Your room wasn’t big but it was good enough for now and much better than sleeping in your momma’s death bed, hard pass.
You’d taken a seat on the couch with some tea you’d brewed up earlier that morning. This was the first time you sat down since arriving, and of course there’s a knock at the door.
“Whatever you’re selling, I promise you, I ain’t interested.” You shout, too exhausted to even attempt getting up.
The knocking continued, “Oh, for fucks sake.” You groaned under your breath and stood on your aching feet to tell them to fuck off in person. You opened the door, “did you not hear me the first time. I said-“
“Hi, Y/n” Lee greeted as he removed his hat.
You scoffed, “Can I help you with somethin’, Sheriff?”
Lee stood there, fiddling with the bill of his hat. His belly had gotten a little bigger and his cheeks had gotten a little chubbier, but you couldn’t help the hitch in your throat when his wedding ring caught your eye. Just a basic silver band, nothing special. But it still left a hollow pit in your stomach.
“I-“ he cleared his suddenly dry throat. “I heard you was back in town. Thought I’d come see for ma self if the rumors were true.”
“Welp, here I am. You can go now.”
“Y/n, I-“
“No, Lee, please. I’ve had a long day and I honestly don’t feel like talking to you right now. No, I take that back. I don’t feel like talking to you at all.”
“That’s a bit harsh, don’t you think, doll.” He grins.
“Goodbye, Sheriff.” You shut the door only to hear him holler at you from the other side.
“Still can’t say my name, huh, Doll? Boy, I really did a number on you, didn’t I?” Your heart sank at his words. It seemed your pain was a joke to him this whole time. You’d always pictured him crying alone like you were but clearly that was never the case. Y’all’s relationship didn’t seem one sided until you were the only one hurt by the fall out.
“Welcome home, Y/n.” He said before you heard his boots click against the porch as he left.
You took a deep breath as you backed away from the door. Tears rimmed your eyes and you scoffed aloud to yourself. After three years you still weren’t over him and you knew that. You didn’t know, however, that he’d still have such a hold on you. And by the way he reacted to how sensitive you were towards the situation still didn’t help the ever growing void that ran through your entire loveless body. The only man you ever loved looked at you as if you were a quick fuck and a punchline.
A tear burned against your cheek and you were quick to wipe it away. You swore to yourself that you’d never cry over that man again and you won’t, instead you decided it was time for a much needed bath.
The bath was scolding hot, just how you liked it, and you opened up a bottle of wine as a sort of reward for the work you’d done today. Once the water got cold and the wine ran out, you brushed your hand and teeth and went to bed.
//
The sun beamed down against your skin as you walked to the local auto shop where your aunt had set you up with another job. You were always good with numbers and they desperately needed someone on the books. Your job would be to look at their spending over the last few months and figure out some sort of budget. You did that for your aunt at her shop, so this didn’t worry you at all.
“Hi, you must be Billy.” You greet the owner, “I’m
y/n, Peggy’s niece.”
“Oh, yes. I’m glad you finally made it down.” He beamed, shaking your hand, “How long will you be here for?”
“I’m not sure, actually. Just until I get my house fixed up enough to sell.” You say, retracting your hand from his sweaty one.
“Ah, well as luck would have it, our secretary just quit on us last week, so there’s a position you’ll adjust to right fine.”
You scoffed, “Wait a minute. Did you say secretary?”
“Yeah. You need to get your hearing checked, Honey?” He grinned. What is it with the men in this town?!
“No, I heard you just fine. My problem is that I was supposed to be your Budget Holder, not a damn secretary.” Your face was turning a touch of pink as you became increasingly annoyed.
“That’s a man's job, sweetie. We don’t you blown a fuse tryin’ ta add up all them numbers, now do we?”
“You can’t be serious.” You say flatly.
“Look, it’s the only position we got. Take it or leave it.”
Everything in you wanted to March out of that shop and never go back again. A secretary's position is nothing to frown upon, but to only be offered it because you’re a woman was despicable. Sadly, you needed this job and it would only be for a few months. So, when you told him you’d take the job you swallowed every ounce of respect you had for yourself. Knockemstiff was truly the worst town in America.
“Sounds great. We’ll see you tomorrow for training. There’s no dress code but there are a few things you’ll need to know before starting. I’ll fill you in once we start your training tomorrow.” He shook your hand again, completely ignoring the furious grimace on your face.
“Great. See you tomorrow.” You mumbled, walking away so you didn’t ‘accidentally’ hit your new boss.
//
Before heading home you decided to stop and grab some things for the house. Being sick, your momma didn’t eat much besides soup, and there was an over abundance of vanilla flavored Ovaltine cans littering the kitchen counters, which you hated.
The second the doors opened, all eyes were on you. You even heard a faint gasp coming from the woman at the register. A smirk crept upon your face. These people's lives were so boring that they still aren’t over your breakup that happened so long ago. Rolling your eyes, you grabbed a cart and headed down the produce aisle.
Once you grabbed the vegetables you’d need for a stew, you headed towards the baking aisle. You need the ingredients for an upside down pineapple cake your momma used to make for you as a kid. Your aunt was coming into town on Saturday to lend a hand and celebrate her birthday. You told her to go have fun, but she insisted on spending her special day with you.
As you searched for the baking soda, you heard your name.
“Did you see Y/n’s back in town?” A lady with a high pitched voice whispered.
“I did. I just saw her. Poor thing. She’s probably still caught up on the sheriff. Prolly wish it was her that was on his arm instead of Laura-Jean.”
You rolled your eyes.
“I know it. Wouldn’t you, though? He’s so handsome.” The lady with the high patched voice giggled.
“Oh, hush! Don’t say things like that.” The other lady joined the high pitched one in whispered giggles. “Oh my goodness, here he comes.” She cleared her throat, “Afternoon, Sheriff.”
“Evenin’,Ladies. Y’all behavin’ yourselves?” You could hear the smirk in his voice.
They both giggled and in unison said, “Yes, Sheriff.”
“Oh give me a break.” You grimaced to yourself.
“Heard Y/n’s back in town.” The high pitched one spoke up. Your face burned. Why would they bring you up to him so bluntly like that? Everyone in this town was so unbelievably nosy.
“I- I heard. Actually just went to see her yesterday.” He said, clearing his throat.
“Uh-oh, the misses didn’t like that, I’m sure.” They giggled.
“Oh, no. She didn’t mind. I was just droppin’ by to give her my condolences about her momma dyin’. Then, she slammed the door in my face. I guess she’s still pretty upset with me.” He was pouting, trying to get some sort of sympathy. If you rolled your eyes any harder you thought they’d pop out of your head.
“Oh, you poor thing. Is there anything we can-“
Suddenly the baking soda slipped from your hand and scattered all other the floor in a puff of dust. “Shit, shit, shit.” You whispered to yourself.
“What was that?” One of the ladies asked.
“Excuse me, ladies.” Lee said. You could hear his boots clacking against the floor on there way over to you.
Shit.
You desperately wanted to run away but leaving this mess for someone to clean up wasn’t right, not even with the predicament you found yourself in. “Well, well, well,” Lee mocked as he rounded the corner. “Only here for less than a day and you’re already causin’ trouble.”
“Stay out of this, Bodecker.” You huff, trying to scoop the baking soda back into the card box it spilled from.
“Was you eavesdroppin’, girl?” He asked, kicking the soul of your shoe.
You scoffed, “Oh, please. I could give two shits what you say about me, Bodecker.”
He leaned in close, hovering over your left side. You heard him chuckle which startled you. He was so close. You could feel the familiar heat radiating from his body and smell that familiar cologne. His lips came down close to your ear. He licked them and then whispered, “If ya weren’t eavesdroppin’, how’d ya know I was talkin’ bout you, hm?”
Your eyes shuttered closed as he spoke, feeling his hot breath against your cheek. His deep southern drawl always made you weak. It took you back to those times in the back of the cruiser. He whispered such dirty praises in your ear when you would ride his cock. Those dirty words that could make you cum in seconds.
“You still with me, doll?” You felt him tuck a strand of your hair behind your ear.
You flitched and stood up, “I- don’t touch me and stop calling me doll, alright? I really don’t have time for your games today, sheriff, and I’m not even really sure what you’re playin’ at in the first place.”
He smirked, running a thumb across his lip, “Darlin, I think the only thing I ever played was you..”
“I-“ your breath hitched in the back of your throat, “I have to go.” You turned to walk away, leaving the mess you’d made and your cart behind. Your eyes welled up with tears again. You didn’t know the man that stood in front of you. Lee was nothing but good to you when you dated and now he’s the most hateful man you’d ever met. The man you loved had disappeared and there’s nothing you could do to bring him back, no matter how bad you wanted to. A tear stained your cheek as you sped through the aisle. You could hear Lee hollering for you to stop but you wouldn’t this time.
All the heartbreak and sorrow that you’d left behind was creeping its way back in. The sooner you sold the house and got the hell out of there, the better.

Excuse me pls rank the yellowjackets from most favorite to least favorite
Oh my gosh, yes, okay okay okay, in reverse order:
13 & 12. Akilah & Mari
It's not that they're my least favourites exactly, they're just the least fleshed out as characters. I hope they both get more to do in s2, because I especially liked the little bit more we got of them during Taissa's failed expedition to find a town. Would love to see them fight off more wolves.
11. Travis
This boy has i s s u e s, which should be fun (I love issues!) but he just falls a little flat for me. I wish we'd gotten more meaningful interactions between him and Javi in particular, as I felt the few we got were so brief we didn't really get to feel their connection or their distance as brothers. Plus he really does treat Natalie like shit.
10. Lottie
I think this is probably a controversial opinion, and I'm delighted for this ranking to change in s2, but she didn't do a lot for me this season. I thought her visions were really well portrayed and I liked seeing her uncertain of where the lines were between reality, spirituality and insanity, but I didn't feel grounded in her character really, or like I could tell you much about her beyond her spirituality.
9. Van
A cutie patootie! I loved her being pissed at Jackie for abandoning her on the plane, and her relationship with Taissa's cute as hell. I'm curious about her burgeoning faith, and even more curious to know if she makes it out.
8. Javi
Baby boy. Him taking the knife to make a little beastie for Shauna got me right in the heart.
7. Jackie
Her arc didn't go the way I was expecting at all, and I was glad the show humanised her by making her leadership in town completely deteriorate in the wild. Coach was right, her power was in her influence, but she doesn't have any influence out there, especially when she won't hunt or learn the survival skills like the others. It made her so frustrating, but also really interesting and unexpected too.
6. Laura Lee
The first real hero of the series, and I love that we got to know her so well in the brief amount of screentime she had. Her taking her teddy bear with her on what amounted to a suicide mission just really beautifully encapsulated that these girls are still children, and idek, I just liked her a lot. She really did just want to get everyone out, and the fact that what propelled her forwards was Van's injury and Shauna's pregnancy when she wasn't especially close with either of them was a little magic.
Also I laughed a lot in this show, but her thinking she'd doomed them all because she'd called her piano teacher a cunt in her head killed me.
5. Natalie
Her flashback ep was one of my faves. I love the way the show circles themes of responsibility and accountability, and I thought it was handled best with the death of Natalie's father. She's been backed into a corner her entire life and the fact that the show let her be mean and ugly and self-sabotaging as a result of that and didn't ever try to make her likeable was magic to me. She's a scrappy little dumpster dog who's been kicked too many times, and I love her.
4. Misty
Honestly no words.
She's an absolute psycho, and I love her too.
3. Coach Ben
Genuinely was not expecting to love him to the extent that I do at the start of the series. I love love love that the show didn't go the route of making him a creep, and instead decided to make him a closeted gay dad suddenly dumped with one million children in the middle of the wilderness. He's trying his best, okay!!
2. Taissa
Tough to a fault and a survivor because she has no other choice but to be is 10000% one of my favourite character tropes, and Taissa embodies it SO WELL, both as kid and as an adult. I love the way she hides herself and her needs behind so many layers that it's just leaking out the sides of her in ways that are increasingly ugly and raw and I have no idea where her arc is going, but I can't wait to find out.
1. Shauna
*Marie Kondo gif* I love mess.
My number one disaster girl (at least on this show, haha), I just love everything about her, and I especially love Melanie Lynskey.

I Rate The TTRPG Shows I’ve Watched
Critical Role (53/114 cr1 & 97/99 cr2)
8/10
The og show. I love cr so very much. The pcs are always so wonderful and the crew plays them so convincingly. I wish I could DM like Matt Mercer my god. Genuinely such an entertaining show with a lovely cast. Also Laura Bailey exists so
-2 points for 4 hour episodes. -1 point for being PURE dnd with less overarching narrative. +1 point for a podcast option
Dimension 20 (all caught up on every season)
9.5/10
I’m gonna fight Brennan Lee Mulligan in a Denny’s parking lot. FUCK. This show is so good, it’s had me go from bawling my eyes out one second to hysterically laughing the next. The role-playing is excellent, the episodes are a more manageable length (1-2hours), and Brennan is also such an excellent DM. The cast is great, Ally, Lou, and Zac are so fucking funny, Emily is chaos in human form, Siobhan could murder me and I’d thank her, Murph SAYS he’s a good lawful boy but I see him play he can’t fool me.
-1 point for emotional damages. -.5 points for not being able to talk abt it with my friends bc you have to pay for dropout. +1 point for free trials and the amount of free content on YouTube.
NADDPod (100/100 main campaign 7/16 Trinyvale)
12/10
Genuinely I think this is my favorite dnd podcast. It’s truly so good. Murph is an excellent DM, his NPCs are amazing, his narrative is beautiful, it’s impossible not to fall in love with this campaign. It’s so funny while still having an ongoing theme of love, forgiveness, and mercy and it just makes you feel better after listening. The cast is also wonderful. Emily Axford exists and my heart goes 🥰🥰🥰. Jake is so funny and his portrayal of Hardwon was so GOOD. Caldwell is amazing and it’s real nice to see him get more comfortable dming trinyvale and see him live out his anime boy dreams through Beverly.
-3 points for dragon pussy. +5 points for moonshine cybin existing
The Adventure Zone (12/16 graduation caught up on everything else)
7.5/10
This and critical role seems to be everyone’s baby’s first dnd podcast. Balance was what got my into ttrpg shows in the first place so TAZ will always have a special place in my heart. That being said, I’ve sort of lost interest in graduation, Travis is a wonderful dm don’t get me wrong but I’m just not ~into~ it anymore. Still, Balance and Amnesty are wonderful, I adore those campaigns and I hope Graduation will grow on me too. I’m not giving up on this podcast yet!!
-5 points for Garfield related crimes. +1 point for the PCs. +1 point for Clint
Rusty Quill Gaming (all caught up)
9/10
Fuck me guys. This podcast has really done me a new one recently. The story is really wonderful, the PCs have my whole heart, and the cast is just really really great. There have been such wonderful portrayals of mental health struggles, the loss of a loved one, and just being real people who are complicated and trying their best. And STILL the podcast is really really funny!! They also do a bunch of specials using other systems (they do a bunch by Grant Howitt with Grant Howitt!). It’s just a good time all around. Rusty Quill is also the company that makes TMA so if you’re into horror you’d probably like it? Idk I don’t do spooks.
-3 points for Ben Meredith and his Grizzop related crimes -1 point for Pathfinder and it’s stupid rules -2 points for all the TMA crossovers +2 points because Alex is a monster (but we respect his craft) +3 points for Sasha, Azu, and Cel
Dungeons and Daddies (14/35)
8/10
I’m only partway through but I’m loving this show so far!! The cast is so funny and the premise in general is fucking genius. I can’t wait to see how these characters grow and become actually good fathers (god Ron and Henry are s o c l o s e). I’m in love with their kids and wives (blows a kiss to Samantha and Mercedes). I’m just super pumped to keep listening.
-3 points for child murder. -1 point for poor parenting. +2 points for Beth May

things you miss: Being a student, many parts of the past, and deceased family members.
names your mom considered when naming you: Ariel, Kathleen, Katrina.
things people call you: Robyn, Byn, Bynbyn.
*Bonus*: what is your name? (first and middle)? I always feel like just sharing Robyn.

Beyond the Black Door
Tumblr media
The book read a bit like early 2010’s YA (which isn’t a bad thing, I was fine with it. But some people don’t enjoy it). While I enjoyed the general plot, I wish some parts of the book were left out so that Kamai—the main character—could get the ball rolling sooner. I feel like it would have made for more interesting situations. I really enjoyed reading all the characters—especially Vehyn and all his villainous ways! The diversity in sexuality was beautiful and I am so glad that people are finding themselves in these characters. I think it was done beautifully, and will hopefully open the door for more books like this. Overall, I felt like the conflict was resolved very well and realistically for the book—aka no, “everything happened because I say.” 3 out of 5 stars!
Scammed
Tumblr media
I enjoyed the first book, but this book? LOVED. The writing is great and the twists and turns? Did not see a lot of it coming! I’ve been conned! I LOVED that we got to see more of the secondary characters (Henry and especially Charlotte who I love x3 now) and I hope even more of the other students get some screen time in the third book. Beyond Charlotte, I was surprised to see how attached I got to Moore! More Moore! Lol Some of my only problems with Scammed were that a lot of the events that happened could have easily been solved with honesty (but then...no drama!) and that Brynn—our main character—was an easy pawn. For someone who’s good at what she does, she sure got played. I’m still spinning at all the twists that happened, trying to piece things from the first book. Seeing if maybe I missed clues, suspecting everyone, questioning who the real villains are and their true motives. That makes for a good book. @ Kristen Simmons/ Tor Teen, please send me the third book today, I am ready for third book, today. I will eagerly be waiting the third book, which I am ready for today. 4 out of 5 stars!
The Kingdom of Back
Tumblr media
Marie has once again written a beautiful book with emotion and grace. As a pianist, I’ve been obsessed with many composers, Mozart being one of them. I knew he had a sister but didn’t know how she too was just as talented as Wolfgang. This books scratched the surface of her talent and used their imagination to write a different world. While I enjoyed the writing itself, I did feel like the otherworldness was a bit confusing and for me, didn’t make a lot of sense some of the time. I had to ignore things or add my own things in order to make more sense of it. Some times I was a bit bored due to the plot slowing down. Beyond that, I was filled with rage at the real life injustice portrayed in the story that Nannerl had to face. Not only from society/the world, but from her own father. I wanted SOMEONE to shout at him. It truly is a sadness and loss to the world that her compositions were lost to the world and she didn’t get her chance to be just as great as her brother. Marie Lu talked about how she believes her music lives on through Wolfgang, I believe so too.
Chain of Gold
Tumblr media
Normally with so many characters, I mostly enjoy them but really only care for a few. With Chain of Gold, I LOVED every single character. They all stole my heart in different ways. Though, Matthew is my favorite by far. I have a soft spot for sassy men who like clothes.
I absolutely loved all the minor plot lines; I can clearly see how they’re going to develop into bigger plot lines. Though since there were so many small ones, it made for the overall plot to be...lacking? Not that it wasn’t good, but I just felt like I wasn’t at the edge of my seat. But given everything that happened, I know it’s only going to give me more anxiety as the books continue. I also had to pull up a family tree to see who’s kid was who’s because there are so many Lightwoods. They’ve kept busy haha
I loved seeing all of our characters from TID and I LOVE how much EVERYONE knows Tessa and Will love each other. Makes me feel even more lonely lmao.
And the ending with some of the main characters...it’s a troupe I haven’t read in a while but I’m so excited.
4 out of 5 stars!
Ember Queen
Tumblr media
I’ve finally read this! I didn’t get to it because I travelled for a signed copy and then school but finally!!
Lots of moving parts to this book, which make sense considering they’re in the middle of a war. A lot seemed a little too easy, and while many were lost on the pages, it wasn’t anyone we really knew. Thus, the feeling of it being too easy.
The big heart ache towards the end of the book, I knew was going to happen. It no longer had a plot or arc to move the story forward unlike everyone and everything else so it was made clear to me. Regardless, I was still incredibly sad as it was one of my favorite things. (Trying to be vague and avoid spoilers lol)
I LOVED that after everything Theo has gone through, even all the growth she has had, she still remained a soft hearted person, unafraid of her emotions. Embracing her tears and everything she felt. I love a strong willed woman, but we need more soft hearted women. Both are equally strong and Laura did an amazing job at capturing that.
The ending was great, I think. It took something Theo often thought about and was a big thorn to her plan and made her embrace it. It was fitting.
I was fortunate enough to start this trilogy early via an arc, and I’m so glad I got to see it to the end.
4 out of 5 stars.
The Beautiful
Tumblr media
Right from the start, I fell in love with Celine. I love everything about her but especially that she wasn’t afraid to want power AND love. The setting and time that this beautiful (haha get it?) book was written was a time where POCs were still treated badly. I liked the fact that Celine—and others—acknowledge this as well as enjoy that all people from everywhere could have a place where they could work side by side. There wasn’t a character I did not like or love. I enjoyed them all, even when they annoyed me or broke my heart. Even the potential lives interests (plural). I love both though I have my heart set on one boy. I didn’t like that even though a lot of things were revealed, those things were still vague. I have to think it’s because grander things will be revealed in the next book, but for now, it’s left me a little confused. This would have made this a 4 star read for me. But I just loved Celine SO MUCH that I have no choice but to make this a 5 star read. She literally made this whole book for me. 5 out of 5 stars.
Steel Crow Saga
Tumblr media
Listen...it’s an Asian inspired book filled with LGBTQ+ INCREDIBLE characters, found family, POKEMON-ESQUE things? Just buy the book already. Don’t even finish my review.
This book was great. Every character in this book was amazing in one way or another. Lee warmed my heart (we love a sarcastic thief) but Tala owns it. She was by far my favorite character. Everything she went through, has done...she’s amazing and her growth through the book speaks loudly. She fought a lot of inner turmoil (NO ONE WOULD BLAME HER IF SHE PICKED DIFFERENTLY THAN WHAT SHE DID IN THE BOOK...but I’m glad she didn’t) and all the emotions she felt? I felt them too. I just want to wrap her in a hug and make sure nothing bad ever happens to her again. I did find one of the characters, Jimuro, annoying up until the end, where his growth was finally tangible. He was big talk but finally led with actions. Good job, dude. Still want to mildly slap you, but it’s all good. The pacing of the book was perfect and I want to live in this world where I basically can get my own Pokemon. Or metal bend. I do wish some smaller details were talked about more, as it left me with a couple questions, but overall I enjoyed it. And I hope one day there’s a sequel. :(
4.5 out of 5 stars!
Tithe
Tumblr media
Story wise, I felt it was rushed and definitely could have been longer for the pace. But I liked it for the most part. Beyond the pace, everything felt a little too easy. If that’s the case, I can make it in the Unseelie court too lol The main character, Kaye, was something. While I generally liked her, she’s very selfish and unaware of the emotions or well being of her friends and family. Possibly it could be because of what she truly is...but still. And while she apologized for some of her actions, it seemed very surface based and it just rubbed me the wrong way. Her one real friend, Corny? LOVE him. Felt for him too. I hope if he pops up again that he gets nothing but happiness because poor king. Roiben? He was cool. I generally liked him! He was kind of the calm to Kaye’s chaos. He didn’t have much character to him but I know the later story revolves around him more so I’m excited to see his development. 3 out of 5 stars.

Twin Peaks Recap, Special Edition: “...Fire Walk With Me“
Greetings, friends, and welcome to a special one-off edition of my ongoing Twin Peaks recaps. This will cover the events of the 1992 film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, in its original theatrical cut. I wrote two pages’ worth of notes for this; I’m not going to copy everything here because, even though this is largely a self-indulgent project, I do want to make it at least somewhat intelligible. For those who haven’t been following along, here’s a link to my recaps for Season 2 of the original series. I will be continuing in the same format for The Return. I’m not overly concerned with “solving” anything, necessarily, but there are certain patterns I want to follow, and one or two theories I’m developing, which should play out over the course of all of this. I’ll place a general spoiler warning here-- if you’re new to the series, I highly, highly recommend watching Seasons 1 & 2 of the show first, with Fire Walk With Me serving as a bridge between those and The Return. I think that covers it; now, to the business at hand...
Part One: “Are you talking about that little girl who got murdered?”
-The film opens with a TV set falling to the floor and breaking- this calls to mind the mysterious ‘black box’ in The Return
-Gordon Cole calls FBI Agents Chet Desmond (Chris Isaak) and Sam Stanley (Kiefer Sutherland) to Deer Meadow, Oregon, to investigate the murder of Teresa Banks, and via the coded instructions of Lil the Dancer, we learn that they won’t have much help once they get there. Unlike the relative efficiency and civic-mindedness of the Twin Peaks Sheriff’s Department, the Deer Meadow office is under an almost impenetrable malaise- the deputy, the receptionist, & the sheriff all being in cahoots.
-Desmond & Stanley conduct Teresa’s autopsy themselves, discovering her now-missing ring and the scrap of paper under her fingernail. Off to Hap’s Diner, again, a kind of “dark mirror” to the cozy RR. In the entryway, under a flashing striplight, we can see the figures of two Woodsmen. They do get a few answers about Teresa- she had a cocaine habit, and before her death, complained of numbness in her left arm.
-Off to the Fat Trout Trailer Park, with its exasperated owner Carl Rodd (Harry Dean Stanton, my one true love). He shows them Teresa’s trailer, seeming more nervous and upset by the minute. “I’ve already gone places. I just wanna stay where I am.” Later, Desmond returns, and finds Teresa’s ring under her trailer. He reaches for it, and disappears.
Part Two: “We’re not gonna talk about Judy at all.”
-At the FBI office in Philadelphia, it’s 10:10 a.m. on February 16th, and Special Agent Dale Cooper is worried. “It’s about that dream I had,” he explains to Gordon.
-Enter Philip Jeffries (David Bowie), an agent who has been MIA for some time. He indicates Cooper- “Who do you think this is, there?” and we are taken into a vision: a room “above the store” populated by familiar figures-- old Mrs. Tremond and her grandson, the Man from Another Place, Mike, the Woodsmen, and BOB. Then, we see the red-curtained “waiting room” of the Black Lodge. Somehow, Jeffries passed through both of these places. He, too, vanishes.
-Cole sends Coop to Deer Meadow, to track down the missing Agent Desmond. Cooper has a bit of an easier time with Carl-- he knows how to appreciate a cup of “Good mornin’ America”. They find Desmond’s car, with “Let’s Rock” scrawled on the windshield. Coop is curious about a nearby empty lot-- “An old woman and her grandson,” Carl tells him. “Chalfont.” (Side note: for a while, there was a band in my hometown called The Chalfonts; I didn’t know the reference then, but I wish I had.)
-And with that, suddenly, we’re in Twin Peaks, WA, one year later, and somehow, in this part of the Pacific Northwest in the middle of February, the deciduous trees have all their leaves and the grass is green...
-Donna Heyward is played here by Moira Kelly, replacing Lara Flynn Boyle. She does a great job, and is arguably more believable as a high-school student, but I kinda miss Boyle’s icy edge. I do love the way she talks about James Hurley, wistfully saying how true his love for Laura is...
-Key moments: 1) Laura giving the diary, and trying to explain BOB, to poor Harold Smith, who isn’t equipped to handle any of this. 2) Cooper, in conversation with Albert Rosenfield, theorizing that Teresa Banks’ killer will strike again, and describing his next potential victim in ways that parallel Laura’s situation. (Albert: “You’re describing half the teenage girls in America.”) 3) Laura meeting Mrs. Tremond/Chalfont and her grandson, which leads her to the discovery that BOB is possessing her father Leland.
Part Three: “The football is empty.”
-Laura’s dream: On the table in the Red Room, she sees Teresa Banks’ jade ring. The Man from Another Place is there, and so is Agent Cooper. Coop warns her, “Don’t take the ring, Laura.” Then she finds herself back in her own bed, with Annie Blackburn laying next to her, covered in blood but alive. Annie explains that “the good Dale” is trapped in the Lodge, telling Laura to write it in her diary. Just before Laura wakes up, she sees herself in the doorway of the room “above the store”, shown in the photograph Mrs. Tremond gave her.
-Bobby Briggs sets up his next score, calling Leo Johnson and Jacques Renault.
-Laura is off to drown her sorrows at the Roadhouse/Bang Bang Bar, where she meets the Log Lady. (I love that Margaret is apparently a regular at the Roadhouse.) Log Lady places her hand on Laura’s forehead, and tells her: “When this kind of fire starts, it is very hard to put out. The tender boughs of innocence burn first, and the wind rises, and then all goodness is in jeopardy.” Inside, Laura weeps as Julee Cruise sings.
-Donna, angry at being shut out, has followed her here. I noticed, standing next to her at the bar, James Hurley’s biker friend Joey Paulsen, who makes a few appearances in the series.
-Jacques Renault sends two punters to Laura’s table, and Donna follows. Laura tries to get rid of her, but then lets her join in. All four, plus Jacques, leave the Roadhouse for a place across the Canadian border. Ronette Pulaski is here, and the link is established between Laura, Ronette, and Teresa Banks. Ronette laughingly points out poor Donna, who has picked up Laura’s jacket, laying over a table as one of Laura’s “customers” has his way with her. Laura immediately rushes to her rescue, screaming, “Don’t ever wear my stuff!” (If only Donna had stayed with the nice biker boy...) As they leave, there is a shot of cigarette butts and empty bottles piled all over the floor.
Part Four: “You always hurt the ones you love.”
-Leland picks Laura up from Donna’s house, and Mike the One-Armed Man nearly crashes into their car on the highway, shouting at Laura. On his hand is the jade ring. Leland flashes back to his meetings with Teresa Banks, his discovery that Laura and Ronette were her ‘friends’, and his subsequent slaying of Teresa.
-Bobby and Laura, drunk and high in the woods, are met by none other than the deputy from Deer Meadow. He reaches into his jacket and Bobby panics and shoots him. Laura, completely out of it, keeps repeating, “You killed Mike!”
-That night, Sarah Palmer has a vision of a white horse. She knows something is wrong, but she has been powerless to stop it.
-At school, Laura is utterly miserable; by the end of the afternoon, she is sobbing quietly at her desk. When she gets up to leave, the camera lingers on the empty seat.
-That night, James takes Laura into the woods. She tries to push him away, to break everything off, but he keeps coming back. This is the heart of it: Laura believes that she is evil, that she is unworthy of love, but James, solid-gold sweet James, loves her anyway, even as he watches her run away into the trees.
-A few notable things about the final sequence: Leo refusing to untie either girl as he leaves; the One-Armed Man prowling around the train car; and Ronette Pulaski seeing the vision of the angel from the painting in Laura’s room. Also interesting in that it’s much more “abstract” than, for example, Maddy Ferguson’s murder in S2:E8. I’m not sure which is worse.
-And we end with Laura in the Lodge, in her beautiful black gown, with Agent Dale Cooper comforting her as the angel hovers above. Sheryl Lee’s face is absolutely heartbreaking--’ecstasy’ not in the popular sense of ‘extreme happiness’, but actual catharsis, as she passes from one world to the next.

WCTH rewatch - New Year's Wish -
It was great that we actually got the continuation of the season 2 finale.
"I never gave him any reason to believe that?"  Sure, Elizabeth.  I guess we're supposed to forget about the entirety of last season but okay.
It's already after Christmas which surely was months after the finale.  I'm confused.  There's no making sense of it.
I forgot Cody was introduced in this movie.
You gotta love Rosemary and her grand ideas... and Lee for making them happen.
Laura is so little!
Oh and Jesse's here too!
Unlike the Christmas movies, this movie is more like an actual start to the season and not just fluff.
And Bill's escaped.  I don't care about this plot at all but of course Bill is the good guy and his name is cleared.
Frank and Abigail were sweet together.
Lee and Rosemary during the interview... so funny.
I love how no one is wearing coats.  Must be a warm winter in the Northern Territories.
Look at Henry being all cute with Nora.  He smiled a lot in this movie.
This movie was pretty enjoyable.  It wasn't really very festive but it had a lot of content which is nice to see.
(I won't be doing gifs of the movies.)

MONTHLY MEDIA: November 2019
Whoa November is over! So I didn’t see any movies this month but there are so many I want to check out. Parasite! Knives Out! Jojo Rabbit! Maybe December.
……….TELEVISION……….
Tumblr media
Daybreak (Episode 1.01 to 1.03) This seems like fun so far! Characters are great, the world seems well-established and feels like it’s been lived in for a while, and it’s really just the plot that I’m not clicking with. Most of the stuff works until it goes back to “gotta find dream girl!” It just feels...dull. Especially when compared to all the other far more interesting stuff going on. Gonna keep watching but hot dang I hope they move on from the “where’s Sam?” stuff soon.
The Good Place (Episode 4.01 to 4.05) I’m not ready for this series to end but hot dang does it feel like it knows where it’s going and how it’s going to get there. I’m just happy to be along for the ride.
Queer Eye: We’re In Japan! (Episode 1.01 to 1.04) I appreciate that they addressed the magic of translators at the end of the first ep and I wish they would’ve gone into more of it. Their “guide” was likely a choice based on social media influence and bilingualism, but it seemed like a missed opportunity to have a gay Japanese man introduce the Fab 5 to the culture. Even the comedian from Episode 3 seemed like a better fit. I just don’t know if I got the right introduction into various nuances of the culture, you know? Also this article says a lot more and in a much clearer way.
……….READING……….
Tumblr media
Emperor Mollusk Versus the Sinister Brain by A. Lee Martinez (Page 191 of 293) Very breezy and easy read but for an interplanetary romp with a hyper-smart squid as the protagonist, it isn’t quite connecting. The book is full of alien tropes and the premise is fun, but the lead character doesn’t really get challenged and there’s little impact from events as they happen. It feels pulpy but doesn’t seem to have the melodrama that makes it read like the author couldn’t commit to the bit.
A Spell for Chameleon by Piers Anthony (Complete) I have a vivid memory of seeing this cover when I was a child and really wanting to read it. So when I saw it at a thrift store I immediately picked it up. There were some fun magical ideas in here but it is dripping with so much 70s sexism that I can’t, in good faith, recommend this to anyone. If it was maybe one or two moments then you could maybe give some leniency to the era, but every chapter has at least one moment where the author takes a shot at women. It’s real bad.
Tumblr media
Silver Surfer Omnibus by Dan Slott, Michael Allred, Laura Allred, and many many more (9 issues/chapters in...sorry this book doesn’t really have page numbers) Okay I love it. I didn’t know what to expect but you know when you just have a gut feeling that you’ll like something? Exactly this. I knew nothing about Silver Surfer but the book catches you up and then takes you on a fun series of intergalactic adventures. When I realized it was essentially Marvel Doctor Who, I knew this was for me. I’m really taking my time with this cause I think it’s something special.
James Bond Origin by Jeff Parker, Bob Q, Roman Stevens, Jordan Boyd, Jordie Bellaire, and Simon Bowland (Complete) Pinpointing what makes a Bond story a “Bond” story is tricky. This series is a fun and engaging spy narrative, but I think showing the early days of Bond makes it read the same way Young Indiana jones felt: you know where they’re going but they’re not quite there yet. That isn’t to say it’s not great, cause it is. I suppose I’d just recommend this to those who like spy stories, narratives set during the second world war, or a combination of the two. Those are likely the same people as those who like James Bond as a character, but I think it lends itself more to the genre than the character. Great start to the series.
Tumblr media
Delicious in Dungeon: Volume 6 by Ryoko Kui (Complete) Still fantastic. It took a weird turn in the middle and I was worried it was moving away from the characters to focus on big fantastical monsters and melodrama, but it quickly corrected course. I can’t not recommend this to anyone who likes small fantasy with a gimmick.
The Tomb of Black Sand by Jacob Hurst, Gabriel Hernandez, and more! (Complete) This was mostly for research and I love this D&D module. It’s a fun concept with nuance and one of my favourite fundamental details: the characters are doing their own thing with their own goals and have been doing things before the party shows up. If you’re okay with spoilers, check out this review.
Tumblr media
The Wolves in the Walls by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean (Complete) It’s interesting reading a true picture book by Neil Gaiman. I enjoy it as an adult, but I wonder if it connects well with its target audience. With that said, I loved the craftsmanship of the story and seeing Gaiman’s work stripped down to its essentials really helps to understand his approach to writing.
……….AUDIO……….
Tumblr media
The Adventure Zone: Graduation (Podcast) Back to D&D and having Travis DM is a great change up! With that said, I’m having a hard time getting past the first ep. It introduces so many characters and so much world-building that I’m not really getting into it.
……….GAMING……….
Tumblr media
Untitled Goose Game (House House) Fantastic, silly fun. I love the concept and the execution is perfect. I wish the game was maybe...2 levels longer, but what we do have is fantastic. Highly recommend.
Tumblr media
Maze of the Blue Medusa (Satyr Press) The group just sorted out a major threat that has been following them throughout the dungeon. A peek behind the curtain: I’m not sure this module is connecting with the group. I don’t think there’s a clear goal and the party hasn’t really taken the initiative to make their own goals. Maybe that’s my fault and I think part of it has to do with our previous adventure being fairly bespoke and rather on rails. They loved it, but I also think it set a precedent. I need to pull back and chat with the players to see how they’re feeling.
A Red & Pleasant Land (Lamentations of the Flame Princess) We don’t get to play often but when we do, it’s a great time. The party stumbled into a genuine warzone and had their first taste of real danger. But they also landed their first true kill and it really had a lot of impact! Up until now, enemies have been whimsically changing when they “die” so to kill someone really meant something. It was a moment that really stuck with me.
And that’s it! As always, Let me know if you have anything you think I should check out and happy Saturday.

The Big Names on Campus Part 1 - Your Sabbatical Officers
Coming to LSE can be daunting, and we know that you guys may be feeling understandably nervous. One thing that will definitely help you is finding out as much information as you can – that way, you can be as well-informed as you can and jump right into life at LSE!
Speaking of important information…have you heard about your Sabbatical Officers? Your Students’ Union is run by 5 full time sabbatical officers and 12 part time officers. They were elected by the rest of the student body last year, and they are the ones who decide what we do for the next academic year. In other words, they basically call the shots here at LSESU.
For all of you guys, they are very important people to know for two main reasons: No. 1 – they are the ones who can actually DO something about a problem you could be having at LSE, so raise any concerns to them! No. 2 – your sabbatical officers have done the whole student experience from start to finish, so they have a wealth of advice and tips to offer.
So here we go, this is your part 1 of the Big Names on Campus – a quick introduction to your Sabbatical Officers:
Tumblr media
David Gordon, Your General Secretary
Pronouns: He/Him Instagram: @david_gordon24 Facebook: David Gordon Email: [email protected] “Hey everyone! I have no doubt that you are all excited about joining us at LSE. I’m your General Secretary (AKA President) for the next academic year 2020-2021 and served as your Community & Welfare officer last year. LSE has such a diverse and vibrant community, and I can’t wait to meet you all!
I’m a graduate of BSc Philosophy, Logic & Scientific Method and lived in Carr-Saunders hall in my first year, where I was the Vice-President of the hall’s committee. During my studies, I was a part of the LSESU Men’s Rugby Club and the LSESU Mixed Lacrosse Club, which was fantastic - I loved being part of both clubs, being able to play the sports, to get stuck into the social side that comes with being a part of the Athletics Union, as well as the opportunities to focus on and challenge sports culture at LSE. There was also a lot of activism and campaigning which was great to support and be a part of. Making sure LSE is a safe and welcoming place for everyone is our top priority as officers, with plenty of opportunities to get involved.
Here are the top 2 things that I think you should do in your first year:
Get involved. Whether you want to take part in a new sport, or join a society, make sure you try new things and explore what LSE has to offer. If a new class mate invites you to an event, whether its online or in person, try it out. The best thing about LSE is the people, so connecting with people through the SU and your department is one of the most rewarding things you can do.
Come and say hi to us, your Sabbatical Officers! Our job is to represent you full time, we are here to support you in your time at LSE by lobbying for change and empowering you with opportunities. If you think there’s something we could to do help, don’t hesitate to get in touch!
One service that I think you should really familiarise yourselves with is the LSESU Advice Service. They can help you with a range of issues or can signpost you to the relevant services who can offer further support. The truth is, we can all have problems at LSE, but the important thing is that you use the support services available to you if you need them. Even if you just need to talk it out with someone, go and speak to the Advice Team.
My general advice for all you new students would be to take it at your own pace. I know how quickly everything can go during Welcome and that you are presented with a whirlwind of information; especially as we head into a new and unfamiliar kind of learning environment. And while you’re trying to make the most of this new and exciting experience, remember just to take it easy. And no matter what you want to get out of LSE, there will be people who want the same thing - so go out there, find them and do it together!”
Tumblr media
Ellie Duplock, Your Activities & Development Officer
Pronouns: She/Her Instagram: ellie_activitiesdevelopment Email: [email protected]
“Hey everyone! My name is Ellie and I’m going to be your Activities & Development Officer for the upcoming year. I hope you are excited to start your LSE journey!
I’ve just graduated from LSE with a degree in International Social & Public Policy. I lived in Bankside Halls as well as in Camden and Holloway during my time here. Sports played a big part in me LSE experience. I was the Vice Captain of the AU Waterpolo Womens’ Team in my second year, then was a member of the Athletics Union (AU) Executive Team and AU Boxing Secretary in my third year, as well as playing in the fifth team of AU Netball! Taking part in the AU Fight Night in my second year and then running the event in my third year were the highlights of my time at university!
My favourite thing about LSE is probably the location – it’s right in the heart of the city! I'm from North East London originally, but living in central meant I did a lot more exploring this year, and it helped me make the most of being at a university. We’re so lucky that LSE is in such a good location.
The top 2 things I think new students should this year:
Join a club or society – definitely one of the best ways to make the most of your university experience!
Make the most of your contact time / office hours. Starting classes can feel a little overwhelming at first, but your class teachers and lecturers will always be happy to help.
For me, the most important service that I think students should be aware of is the Students’ Union (LSESU)! When I was a student, I didn't really make the most of the support and guidance they offer until I became part of the Athletics Union Executive Team in my third year. The LSE Volunteering Centre is also fantastic and I wish I'd looked more into that when I was a student!
In terms of my priorities for the year, you should definitely keep an eye out for the Visual Art Showcase that I’m planning, in conjunction with the LSESU Creative Network! It aims to highlight the incredible creative work that our students do. There’s lots of other projects in the works right now that I’ll be sharing details of through the year, with potential for one really big change for LSESU aswell, so watch out for these!”
Tumblr media
Bali Birch-Lee, Your Education Officer
Pronouns: They/Them Twitter: @theotherbali Email: [email protected]
“Hello! I hope you are all looking forward to your arrival in September. I’m Bali and I’ll be your Education Officer for the upcoming year. I studied an MSc in Political Sociology here at LSE and actually did my undergraduate degree over at Cambridge, where I studied Education.
I didn’t live in halls, I rented privately with my partner, a 45-minute bus ride from campus. This worked really well for me as it allowed me to keep a distance between my work and chill spaces, plus it gave me a lot of time to read on the bus!
I wasn’t part of any clubs or societies during my Postgraduate study here at LSE, but I did perform in one of the “LSE Chill night” music events and sang with the Philosophy and Logic department band…not sure how this managed to slide seeing as I wasn’t actually a student of their department, but hey ho!
My favourite thing about LSE is the wide array of people you get to meet! It’s such a diverse place. I think there are 2 very important things all new students need to do in their first year:
Find out how you learn best! LSE can be quite a different experience to school or work environments – or even previous universities. Take some time to work out how you want to organise your time and which learning approaches work best for you.
Seek out those interesting discussions! Challenge people, bounce your thoughts off one-another and explore the topics that really tickle your curiosity. If there is someone in a class with you who you have a bit of an academic crush on, talk to them! So much learning and processing can happen in the conversations that you strike up outside of the classrooms.
In my opinion, The LSESU Advice Service is the most important service to know about! I didn’t really understand what it was until I became a Sabbatical Officer and I wish I had taken the time to find out when I was a Postgrad. They do such incredible work supporting students, providing help and guidance whatever issue a student may be facing.
I’m working on a lot of priorities this year, but I would definitely say that our work on Diversification and Decolonisation of the Curriculum is something to watch out for. I’m really looking forward to working to make the curriculum more inclusive! We are looking to holding talks and events to provide extra-curricular opportunities to engage with more diverse and radical topics, as well as addressing courses and departments. If you’re interested, then definitely keep an eye out for ways you can get involved!”
Tumblr media
Laura Goddard, Your Community & Welfare Officer
Pronouns: She/Her Instagram: @laura_communitywelfare Email: [email protected]
“Hi guys! I’m Laura, your Community & Welfare Officer for 2020-2021. Congratulations on securing your place at LSE, I can’t wait to welcome you to LSE in a few weeks time!
I initially started doing a Politics and International Relations here at LSE, but at the end of my first year decided to switch to a straight International Relations course. I’ve just graduated, I lived in Connaught Hall which is an intercollegiate hall right on Tavistock Square – I definitely took for granted the 15/20 min walk onto campus! Personally, I loved my living experience and I got to meet people from KCL and UCL as well as LSE.
When studying, joining AU Mixed Lacrosse club was probably the best decision I made. It was a super sociable club and I learned a new sport completely from scratch. I went on to join the Mixed Lacrosse committee in second year and became club captain in my third!
My favourite thing about LSE, as cliché as it sounds, is the people. Everyone you meet has such impressive life experience and that’s so inspiring for your own future and goals. It’s a really motivating environment to be in!
The top 2 things I think you should do are:
Find a society or sports club that feels right for you – it’s not just about playing the sport, you will form a really strong and tight knit community with other members. They were like a second family to me!
Consider volunteering with the LSE Volunteer Centre – your first year will be a whirlwind, but making time to give back is so important. It also has amazing benefits in terms of your mental health and wellbeing.
I echo what my fellow Sabbatical officers have said - the most important service that I think you need to know about is without a doubt the LSESU Advice Service. You can get free, impartial advice on any issue that you may be facing while you are at LSE, with advisors who are incredibly understanding and have been trained in dealing with a wide range of issues.
This year I am focusing on improving all students’ experience of LSE’s mental health services and sexual violence support because to me; nothing is more important than the wellbeing and the support services available for you at LSE, and they need to reflect the diversity of its student body. I’ll be updating you on the progress of this throughout the year, stay tuned!”
Your Sabbatical Officers work full time for LSE Students’ Union to represent your views and negotiate with the School to improve your student experience. If you have an issue, want to raise a concern or feel like a change needs to happen at LSE – these are the people who can do something about it. They are open to your suggestions and feedback, and welcome your insights on how they can improve your experience at LSE. You can reach out to David, Ellie, Bali and Laura on their respective emails.

2 Samuel 18:1-19:10, John 20:1-31, Psalms 119:153-176, Proverbs 16:14-15
Today is the 1st day of June welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is great to be here with you today. So, yesterday we turned the knob and stepped into a shiny, sparkly new week and now we’re turning the knob and walking into a shiny, sparkly new month that is out in front of us waiting to be lived into, this 6th month of the year. So, by the time we finish this month we will have experienced quite a bit a transition we won’t be reading in the Gospels anymore. That's just…that’s just briefly in front of us. So, we will be moving into new territory in the Bible, but we will also be reaching the center point of the year as…as we end this month. So, wow! And if I'm counting right this is the 153rd day of the year if we’re counting for leap year this year. So, we’ve been at this a while day by day step-by-step, allowing God's word to continue to do what God's word does. Sort of just touches the places in our lives that need to be touched. It just continues to pull us forward. And, so, let's allow that flow. Let's be pulled forward by picking up where we left off yesterday. King David is on the run from his son Absalom who’s trying to take over the kingdom and…and…and in the process trying to do away with his father. So, some family drama to say the least is going on. Today second Samuel chapters 18 verse 1 through 19 verse 10. We’re reading from the God's word translation this week.
Commentary:
Okay. So, we've…we’ve kind of come to the end of this story where Absalom the son of King David is trying to take over the kingdom of his father because Absalom is dead. And, so…so, he won't be trying to take over the kingdom of his father anymore. And it's really interesting what we observe today. David has run from his own son, fled Jerusalem, the capital city, like fled from his son. His son has disgraced his father in a number of ways publicly and had the intention and sought the advice on how to kill his father. David, of course, does indeed know this story. It was his story when King Saul was pursuing him. So, he is stealthy, he does know what he's doing even though he's got a much larger and different kind of entourage and he's older. So, it works out that there's gonna be a battle and David tells his commanders to go kindly toward Absalom. In other words, try to spare Absalom. In the end though Absalom is killed in battle. And David comes apart at that point. Like he goes into complete grief. He just begins to disintegrate, which certainly causes dissonance, right? Because the armies of…who were loyal to the King, who have basically rescued and saved the king's life and his kingdom now feel bad for what they've done because the king is so distraught. And, so, they don't know how to feel, which is when Joab steps in is like basically, “if you do not go out to your men who have saved you they won't be here tomorrow you won’t have anybody left.” So, what kind of things happen in a person's life that can bring them to this kind of behavior? Like why is David so completely undone? Obviously, he's lost a child. He's lost his son. So, that is completely understandable, but like what is fueling this? Probably regret. Some of you…some of you kind of like know…you’ve been through this to some sort of degree. Others of you may not, but you can go through your life estranged from someone. I have seen this so many times in my life. An offense can happen in your life that estranges you. And it can be a serious offense that should estrange you, but it then goes on and on. Maybe it's between a…a child and a parent, or between siblings or between best of friends. Something happens, something happens that probably shouldn't have happened. It causes a rift, the rift grows into estrangement, separation. And then that can go on for decades until somebody dies. And then all the sudden the time lost, like it...it liquefies basically, and the loss becomes overwhelming because the realization that like, that…that the story is written and there's no modifications that can be done anymore. That reality creates its own kind of dissonance inside of us where we’re realizing and maybe even wishing that we had…that…that we had walked the path differently because we lost something and we didn’t realize how much it meant until it was gone. And, so, that's the kind of reaction that we sort of see in David's behavior. And it would make sense why because he had this son Absalom, a beautiful boy, beautiful young man, a very respectable, very good-looking person. But David kind of undermined himself in his own family by taking another man's wife and…and having that man killed. And then one of David's other sons rapes his daughter Tamar and David basically doesn't really step into that much. And, so, Absalom kills Amnon who raped his sister and he has to go on the run for his life. And he’s estranged with…from his father for years in Geshur. And then when he’s brought back to Jerusalem, he’s not allowed to see his father's face for a couple of years while living in Jerusalem. So, now Absalom's dead and David's realizing that, you know, he had a role to play in the animosity that happened between son and father. And maybe one of the things we can consider in the scene that has played out before us is whether or not it's worth it. I mean we can be right. We can be right for decades. We can be convinced. We can be cemented in for decades that we’re right but when that person that we have some kind of connection to that we’re holding an offense against for so…for a long period of time when they are not in the picture anymore, that disappears. It…it was vapor in the first place. Maybe it's better to say what you need to say now. Maybe it's better to do what you need to do now before the story comes to a conclusion.
Prayer:
Father, we invite You into our regrets. We don't like to often think about them. They usually have a lot of pain associated with them. And once You've kind of wrestled with regret, you come to a realization that You can't win really. And, so, you're gonna wrestle and wrestle and wrestle or you’re gonna decide to just move on because there's no other way. And maybe we've never really invited You into those things. And maybe we have a regrets in the making in our lives right now, things that are gonna really really hurt later because we so desperately needed to be right right now. And, so, we’re inviting You into this because we see a glimpse of it, we see a picture of it, we see hints of it coming out of the pages that we’re reading today. So, we invite You into these areas. Some of the stories can't be rewritten. They can't be modified. They are what they are, and we invite You into that and we release it to You and offer it to You and invite You to lead us on the path that is forward. In other cases, maybe things have just been festering and they've blown up and time has gone by and we’ve just let it go by. And not all these things are entangled with other people. Some of these things are just based on the decisions that we've made, some of the choices that we wish we hadn't made because we made them completely without You and now, we have the scars. We invite You into the places of regret Father and we open ourselves fully to You and we invite You fully into these experiences and we take comfort in knowing that we’re not carrying this alone. You are with us and You will never leave us. Come Holy Spirit into all of these matters that we’re talking about today. Permeate these things. Be in and among us as we consider. We pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:
Hi this is Rachel from Pennsylvania. Would you join me in prayer? Dear Lord, we lift up the family struggling with the pregnancy. Lord You know what’s going on with the baby in the womb and where and how this baby will be best taken care of and what this couple can handle with You to lean on. So, I pray Lord that You ease their pain and that You bless them with the desires of their hearts. I also want to lift up Laura…Laura Lee from Boynton Beach. Please bless her and bless her business and her family and her friends. I thank You for her encouragement. I also…I also want to pray for Rosie and her children and grandchildren as she lifts up our children and grandchildren regularly. I just pray that You bless her and I thank You for her and her prayers and how thoughtful they are and how well put together they are and I just thank You for how she relates them to You and the word of God and it’s just such a blessing. And also, I wanted to say to Valerie, welcome. We’re so happy that you are with us and I pray that you will become best friends with God. Welcome to the family.
Hello DAB my name is Perry Sky I’ve been listening to the broadcast for more than 12 years, but I’ve never called in. I want to wish everyone a happy Pentecost weekend. I’m praying for the power of the Holy Spirit to come upon us this weekend. I’m praying for the salvation of my husband’s soul and the restoration of my family. My family is very broken and has been for some time. My husband had…has issues that have caused alienation in my family and my children have abandoned us. My family is gone. I have no close friends and I have no support system and I’m disabled, and life has become hopeless, but I know that God is the restorer of families and He can restore mine too. So, I need prayer over restoration and hope and inspiration. Thank you for listening.
Hey DAB family this is Abby. I am just calling in tonight because I have just been following the news about the murder of George Floyd and I don’t know what to say. I…I…I don’t know if what I’m gonna say is the right thing to say. I just do know that as a white woman, I can’t keep quiet about this and I cannot just not say anything. I just want to say to all of my black brothers and sisters who are listening right now that I am so sorry that you have to endure the pain and the trauma and everything that you have to endure being a citizen in the United States and even across the world. I’m so ashamed. I’m so ashamed that, you know, if I’ve been part of the problem, I’m so ashamed of what people who look like me have done to you. I just wanted to put that out there and say that because I just…I don’t know what words to say but I’m just so sorry and I love you and I recognize my privilege and I’m doing everything I can to educate myself and to learn to do better and I promise you that I will raise kids who will do better and I just want you to know that I love you and I’m sorry.
Hello, I would like to pray for the lady that called in on April 8th who suffers satanic abuse. Father God please heal my sister in Christ. Minister to her heart in a deep and personal way so that through the word of God she may learn how to be truly intimate so that she may experience healthy relationships. Bring Christian warriors in her life who understand what she’s going through and can walk through the spiritual battlefield alongside her. Break any strongholds. I also pray that this satanic abuse is brought into the light. So many people don’t acknowledge that it exists or turn a blind eye to it and I just pray that we all just wake up and see that this does go on. It went on before and it goes on still now. If we say nothing, do nothing we’re complicit. So, I just pray that we have open…we have eyes to see and ears to hear not only the good that’s going on but also, I just pray that we’re equipped to handle satanic attacks and help our fellow brothers and sisters. Amen.
Good morning family this is Soaring on Eagles Wings from Canada and I’m calling in to lift up a few people to you. Terry from Australia was so transparent about his addiction with pornography. He doesn’t want to be in that space anymore and he’s tried all that he can try with no success. So, Father God I’m asking You now to take over and intervene in his life and remove this…this bondage that’s upon him Lord God. Help him to be the overcomer that You have created him to be. Let truth be poured into his life Father God and send him all the tools that he needs spiritually and in every other way to deliver him from this. Terry we are standing with You and we’re supporting You as You continue to fight the good fight. Shannon from Texas. You had a job offer, You moved, now Your job has been rescinded. What is she to do Father, God? She needs direction and she needs help. So, I’m asking You to guide her steps and show her the path that she should go. May she walk in Your footsteps Lord as You lead her to the right job in the right direction and I thank You. And I continue to lift up my friend Susan whose son has stage IV cancer. And now somebody else in her life as cancer. It’s been such a difficult time for her lately. So, precious Jesus, shine Your light into her life. Lift her up. Plant her feet on solid ground. When she gets anxious or fearful, remind her Lord God of what You have done and what You will continue to be. Surround her and her son in her family in the name of Jesus I pray…

Could you recommend any gay books? I, a well known gay, am running out of gay things to read. Preferable to the guy on guy variety if you could, my good man
(Part 2) Or they could simply be funny. I have recently read P.S Your Cat is Dead and it was quite the delight
Honestly you’ve probably read anything I could recommend because I don’t have much. I’ve been trying to expand my m/m library but every time I look at “queer books!” lists it’s 99% f/f which is getting frustrating (not that there’s anything wrong with f/f but it’s a little tiring seeing ‘queer rep!’ and it JUST being one thing). But I’ll share what I have.
First up is a series that doesn’t focus on the m/m relationship but it is there and holy cow I love them and I ache for them and I cried and I cheered and I screamed and just -whale noises-. I want a series just about them though it’s not gonna happen but that is…
Tumblr media
The Shades of Magic trilogy by V.E. Schwab! This series destroyed me in the best and worst of ways and I’m never going to be over it, and the m/m couple in it just hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I love them so much and as I said I just want a series about them post-Conjuring Of Light SO BAD. This trilogy is one of my all time favorite series. It’s amazing.
Tumblr media
Next up two books I HAVE read. Simon Vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli and Hero by Perry Moore. Simon is pretty much one of the most well known ones so I won’t go into it. Hero was pretty good but I don’t think there was much m/m in it? The main guy is gay and it’s about him being a closest gay superhero (in training? I think?), and it was decently good from what I can remember. I need to reread it tbh.
Unfortunately the rest of the list isn’t so much recommendations as it is “here’s what I own that I haven’t read yet”.
Tumblr media
Some more known books, I have NOT read these yet. What If It’s Us by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera, They Both Die At The End by Adam Silvera, Autoboyography by Christina Lauren, We Contain The Multitudes by Sarah Henstra, Aristotle And Dante Discover The Secrets Of The Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz, and The Infinite Noise by Laura Shippen. I have not read any of these so cannot attest to them.
Tumblr media
More books I have not read!
Luck in the Shadows by Lynn Flewelling, Magic’s Pawn by Mercedes Lackey, Carry On by Rainbow Rowell, The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee, and How (Not) To Ask A Boy To The Prom by S. J. Goslee. Again, have not read them so cannot say one way or another.
Tumblr media
Some possibly lesser known books. The entire Underrealm series by Garrett Robinson has a lot of queer characters, I know there’s a few queer men in it but I don’t know if there are m/m relationships in it. I have read the first three books in the Nightblade series and really enjoyed them a lot.
For Ever by Cindy Paul is a collection of short queer fantasy stories, I unfortunately have not read it yet but I am hoping there’s some queer men in there. I know the author is planning on writing a series about gay werewolves soon so that’s exciting!
Darkened Light by Sarina Langer has a gay male in it but I don’t know if he ends up in a relationship or not. I have read other books by Sarina and they are amazing so I am excited to read Darkened Light.
Tumblr media
And finally some graphic novels/comic series! That I have not read yet xD
Check Please by Ngozi Ukazu is about a gay hockey player and I am super excited to get the time to read it sometime soon! I know a couple of my tumblr friends really love it and are probably yelling at me right now for reducing it down to simply ‘gay hockey player’ so I apologize for that xD Heartstopper by Alice Oseman all I know is it’s a boy meets boy story which it says on the cover so lol and Bloom by Kevin Panetta is I think a m/m that involves baking.
Tumblr media
OH I forgot “My Brother’s Husband” by Gengoroh Tagame! I have the first volume and it is SO good! But it’s more about the main character coming to terms with his homophobia. His deceased twin’s husband comes to Japan to learn more and it’s about that, and it’s so good. I HAVE read the first volume and LOVED it, but it’s not really m/m just a story on acceptance, understanding, culture, and family revolving around being gay.
Tumblr media
Also I have just ordered “Cloaked in Shadow” by Ben Alderson the other day but it hasn’t arrived yet, and that is a gay male fantasy series I think.
I’m definitely missing some queer male books I’ve overlooked in my library or simply don’t realize include queer males. I wish my library was bigger and if you’ve got any recommendations feel free to throw them my way. Ditto to my followers. I especially want more m/m in fantasy/sci-fi.

off the rack #1283
Monday, October 14, 2019
Happy Canadian Thanksgiving to one and all. Thank-you for reading this. The Jee Gang gathered for a turkey dinner yesterday with the littlest 2-month-old Ashton being passed around like a hot potato because he was tired and cranky. His mom got him settled but you couldn't hear his tiny cries for the raucous noise from his cousins. The kids took over the larger formal dining room now that they outnumber us old folks. It was a nice big family affair.
Gwenpool Strikes Back #3 - Leah Williams (writer) David Baldeon (art) Jesus Aburtov (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). Gwenpool tries to save herself from cancellation by holding a "Contest of Champions" in this issue. Guest stars galore. This thing is so much fun.
Catwoman #16 - Joelle Jones (story & art) Laura Allred (colours) Saida Temofonte (letters). I'm glad I checked the credits on this issue since I said that I was going to let this cat out after reading last issue. I will always read a book by Joelle Jones even though this one had me befuddled with some jumping back and forth in time and the added "Year of the Villain" thing. I am curious to find out Catwoman's decision.
Loki #4 - Daniel Kibblesmith (writer) Oscar Bazaldua (pencils) Oscar Bazaldua & Victor Olazaba (inks) David Curiel & Carlos Lopez (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). I love a good trickster. Loki uses a good one to defeat Nightmare. I like this Loki.
Detective Comics #1013 - Peter J. Tomasi (writer) Doug Mahnke (pencils) Keith Champagne & Christian Alamy (inks) David Baron (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). It's Batman versus Mister Freeze as the super villain tries to resurrect his dead wife. Batman's flame thrower costume is a cosplayer's wet dream
Doctor Doom #1 - Christopher Cantwell (writer) Salvador Larroca (art) Guru-eFX (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). This was a pleasant surprise. The art caught my eye but the story is really good too. There's no sign of the good guy Sorcerer Supreme from a while ago. Just good old fashioned arrogant Victor. He scoffed at a new technology to reverse global warming and is accused of being jealous of it because it was invented by Reed Richards and Tony Stark. When disaster strikes, Latveria is blamed and Doctor Doom sacrifices himself for his country. The mystery is who framed him and I will keep reading to find out.
Web of the Black Widow #2 - Jody Houser (writer) Stephen Mooney (art) Triona Farrell (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). What the!? Two Black Widows? Doctor Doom isn't the only one being framed for murder. I liked the clever cut-out on Nat's bathing suit.
Miles Morales: Spider-Man #11 - Saladin Ahmed (writer) Ze Carlos (art pages 1-8) Ig Guara (art pages 9-20) Dono Sanchez-Almara with Protobunker (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). Miles must solve the super hero's dilemma of saving a family member or a stranger's life. His decision leads to a confrontation with the Prowler. Is it Uncle Aaron? I can't wait to find out.
White Fox #1 - Alyssa Wong (writer) Kevin Libranda & Geoffo (art) Israel Silva (colours)
VC's Joe Sabino (letters). Another Agent of Atlas super hero gets her origin story told. She's based on Korean folklore. It was very well done and almost makes me want to read the new team book. There's also a peek at the Future Avengers by Alyssa Wong (writer), Ale Garza (art), Dono Sanchez-Almara with Protobunker (colours) and VC's Joe Sabino (letters). They're an Asian version of the Young Avengers but these guys used to be Hydra agents in training. Read on if you're wondering what turned them into good guys.
Age of Conan Valeria #3 - Meredith Finch (writer) Aneke (art) Andy Troy (colours) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). I wish the art inside was a nice as the Jay Anacleto cover.
Marvel Action Spider-Man #9 - Delilah S. Dawson (writer) Fico Ossio (art) Ronda Pattison (colours) Shawn Lee (letters). The Black Cat gets caged as the kids finally work together and start to treat each other with respect. Next, things get even darker as Venom attacks.
Batman 100 Page Giant #1 - There are five superb stories in this $4.99 US one-shot and you'll feel like you just read five $3.99 comic books when you hit the last page. The only story that was disappointing was the Batwoman story mainly because she was fighting a lame villain named Lord Death Man. It was written by Steve Orlando, who has never impressed me. The other four stories more than make up for it though, especially Scott Snyder's lengthy contribution. This book is a steal at twice the price.
The Amazing Spider-Man #31 - Nick Spencer (writer) Ryan Ottley (pencils) Cliff Rathburn (inks) Nathan Fairbairn (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). More hints are given to the secret identity of the super villain Kindred. Definitely related to Norman Osborn. That mystery is the only thing keeping me reading this book. As if the waters weren't muddy enough, the guy in the straight jacket isn't even Norman. I hope we don't get strung along too much longer because there will come a point where I say screw it, I don't care anymore.
Batman Universe #4 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Nick Derington (art) Dave Stewart (colours) Josh Reed & Tom Napolitano (letters). I don't mind this time traveling if it means that we see Batman and Green Lantern team up with Jonah Hex. The chase is on as Vandal Savage gets his hands on his prize. I know I've said that I don't like time travel and Vandal Savage, but this is a Bendis book and I'm a sucker.
Harley Quinn & Poison Ivy #2 - Jody Houser (writer) Adriana Melo (pencils) Mark Morales (inks) Hi-Fi (colours) Gabriela Downie (letters). I think the Floronic Man chowed down on Swampthing and Ivy is next on his menu. Well, it's Harley to the rescue and the girls seek help from a fellow super villain to see what's wrong with Ivy. I'm reading this because it looks so pretty.
Powers of X #6 - Jonathan Hickman (writer) R.B. Silva & Pepe Larraz (art) Marte Gracia & David Curiel (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). The house is built and the power has been connected for a new X-verse. Jonathan Hickman has managed to make mutants relevant again for me. There are a half a dozen new mutant books coming out in the next six weeks starting with X-Men #1 hitting the racks October 16. I'll be reading them all to see how I feel about them but I can't imagine that they'll be all worthwhile.
Event Leviathan #5 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Alex Maleev (art) Josh Reed (letters). I'm curious to find out who Leviathan is but it's not going to have a big impact on me since I'm not a huge DC fan. I'm sure DC fans might be able to suss out the secret given the Manhunter clue in this issue but I'm going to have to wait until next issue when all is revealed.
Joker/Harley: Criminal Sanity #1 - Kami Garcia (writer) Mico Suayan & Mike Mayhew (art) Richard Starkings of Comicraft (letters). I love new and different takes on iconic characters and this one is a killer. Harleen Quinzel is Doctor Harley Quinn, GCPD profiler, who is working a 5-year-old cold case of the murder of a hospital employee. Meanwhile there are other new murders landing on her desk. The writing is tight and the characterisations are vivid, helped by the beautiful art. Mico's black and white art chronicles the present while Mike's gorgeous colour art handles the flashbacks. DC's Black Label imprint is well worth checking out if you're a mature reader. This mystery not only looked good but made me feel good after I finished reading. I can't wait to find out what happens next.
Contagion #2 - Ed Brisson (writer) Stephen Segovia (art) Veronica Gandini (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). I know I said that I wasn't going to read any more of this 5-issue mini but this was on the racks with the awesome Power Man and Iron Fist cover so I snagged one after I finished reading all the others for the week. This issue was better thought out and the story flowed smoothly. Ben takes Sue, Reed and Johnny to Doctor Strange for help and the two of them go back to Yancy Street to contain the infectious bad guy. Danny and Luke are there helping the first responders and a couple of surprise super heroes show up too. The villain is briefly subdued but Doc Strange and Power Man succumb to the disease at the end. Uh-oh. The next issue teaser has Jessica Jones so that's reason enough for me to want to read it.
