Many of you know I’ve been working on a comic called Patriot Tales for some time. We’re about to put out our fourth issue we wanted to show our supper to Valley Forge and the Montco community. I am fortunate enough to be working alongside @jasonpiperberg and @radmanrbarr . I crossed paths with both of these creative whirlwinds as an Instructor at UArts. The book layout and T-shirt design (above) are the work of @jaredspackman I met Jared while teaching at Antonelli. He and another student, @kiras.kreations , recommended me for comic gig. We’re looking at the Wissahickon on this #FlashbackFriday! 

Acquired by the Fairmount Park Commission in 1868 in order to preserve the purity of the City’s water supply, Philadelphia’s Wissahickon Valley Park has inspired countless artists, poets, and visitors with its natural beauty.

In 1894, artist Augustus Kollner compiled an album of his prints and drawings, Bits of Nature and Some Art Products, in Fairmount Park, at Philadelphia, Penna, which includes this circa 1878 lithograph of the Wissahickon looking much the same as it does today.

Nature Notes: Black squirrels

I recently moved to Roxborough. One of the first orders of business was to set up some bird feeders. I was thrilled to see a few black squirrels come to feed on the dropped seed. These were some of the first black squirrels I’d seen in Philadelphia. Some of my nearby friends told me there's a good-sized population in our area.

Black squirrels are the same species as the ubiquitous eastern gray squirrels. They are a melanistic form of the species. This means they show more of the black-colored pigment called melanin. In some species, this change helps animals to survive in their environment. It means they are better camouflaged and are harder for predators to see.

The most famous melanistic animals are black panthers. Black panthers are melanistic leopards. The darker pigment allows the leopards to blend in while hunting in the shadows or at night. Black panthers can be the dominant form of leopard in the dense tropical forests of Southeast Asia and Central Africa. Jaguars also have a melanistic form that is more common in the Amazon Rainforest.

On the east coast, the black form of the squirrel may have been more common before Europeans arrived. Black squirrels blended in among dense forests. As settlers cut forests down, the light gray squirrel became dominant.
