What about Ice and Mav whose first several meetings happened a couple years before Top Gun at a random bar in Tennessee, where Ice was the god of the karaoke machine and Mav was the master of the mechanical bull.

Maybe Mav is staying at Goose's place and Ice is visiting his grandparents, and the locals are all absolutely delighted when they show up on the same night. They don't know each other at first, but they get to talking eventually, buying each other drinks, fucking. They switch stetsons a couple times, just for the thrill of it, throwing looks at each other across the bar.

The last time they see each other, Mav has to leave the bed early in the morning because he was so caught up in Ice that he forgot he and Goose are leaving. He grabs Ice's stetson by an accident and doesn't realize until he's packing his things.

He carries it with him everywhere he travels for years, just on the off change that he'll get to return it, but Top Gun is the last place where he'd expect it to happen.

That first night, he comes to the O club wearing it. He catches Ice's eyes across the room and there's not a hint of doubt in them. He's on Ice's radar, he's just waiting for him to fire.

And Ice does just that when he follows him to the bathroom with a smirk. "You know what they say, Mitchell? Wear the hat, ride the cowboy."

+ Some facts about him

He is their biological son. Cookie explanation is Fire Spirit's dough mixed with a vial of Pitaya Dragon's blood/strawberry jam. Human explanation is... some kind of magic idk lol

He is younger than Snapdragon (born post-canon) but will one day be the taller sibling despite the age difference

Many of his clothes are gifts from the Mala Tribe, tailor-made just for him. They're already used to making offerings to Pitaya and Fire Spirit, adding Lava to their habits of worship is no trouble

He has little dragon scales littering his body; a lesser (but still noticeable) amount than Pitaya. A sprinkling on his shoulders, on the back of his hands, a long, thin streak creeping along the length of his spine. As he ages, more will appear. By the time he's an adult, he won't look too different from Pitaya

He inherited the majority of his powers from Fire Spirit, namely his pyrokinesis*. But he also got Pitaya's fire breath

He got the best (worst) personality traits from both parents, thus making him perhaps the most obnoxious little delinquent to ever walk the earth lol

Lava Smoothie and Pepper Jack are lifelong best friends (they're even the same age!). Burning Spice and Pitaya Dragon are buddies and wanted/hoped their sons would develop a similar connection. Their dream came true; Jack and Lava get along like a house on fire and are practically inseparable

He calls Fire Spirit "Dad" and Pitaya Dragon "Pops" (teasing, but light and born from genuine affection. Pitaya acts annoyed by it, but would be genuinely upset if he stopped)

He seeks to one day out-smartass Fire Spirit. He has yet to succeed but refuses to quit

He can touch water without being harmed, but it feels... strange to him. Uncomfortable. It makes him itch. So he'd rather avoid it when possible

He is secretly very, very insecure about his lineage. He fears that Pitaya loves him less than he loves Snapdragon because he's a half-breed. It doesn't help that he primarily takes after Fire Spirit (esp in appearance) and didn't inherit many draconic features (he is most notably missing wings and a tail*. It's a very sore spot for him)

* In both a more general desire to become stronger plus his desperation be more like a dragon, Lava has taught himself to "mold" his flames into a (mostly) functional, makeshift pair of wings and tail. So long as he concentrates, they will maintain their shape and functionality; break his focus and they'll disappear. (With time and practice, he'll eventually learn to create and maintain them with but a flick of his wrist, and they will exist as long as he's conscious, no focus necessary)

its just constantly grating how people in fan spaces are uncomfortable engaging with experiences different from their own, especially because a lot of fandoms are made up of queer white young adults that ends up influencing everythinggg. all coworkers are found family now because this is a fandom filled with teenagers who have never worked a job and dont understand what a "coworker" is. there's an epidemic of "x media is ACTUALLY a metaphor about xyz" which sounds fine but it always ends up making everything about the experiences of queer white young adults. you get "your best american girl isnt about race its actually about being nonbinary". or when warriors fans tried to claim brambleclaw's identity struggles were a queer narrative when like, yes the half-clan mixed race metaphor is very clunky and often horribly written but like, come on everything has to cater to peoples exact lived experience. its okay to hate sparkpelt because i hate my mommy and need to project that onto warrior cats. and nightheart is trans because he changed his name and if you try to call out the misogyny in his writing you're transphobic. its like how every character gets headcanoned as having autism or depression or anxiety but never anything cluster-b. characters get reduced to funny incorrect quote tropes and nothing more. look at whats happening in that batman webtoon its dreadful. sometimes things wont be personally relatable the human experince is wide and varied and somethings things will be about experiences you haven't lived and you can just enjoy that without having to force it into a perfect mold so you can easily consume it. not everything is about you. IDK!

I will admit I'm a little salty that people, in an effort to prove that there is no good dialogue in Veilguard at all, keep comparing mission exposition to the high point narrative set pieces of prior games. I agree that some of the writing related to plot mechanics and mission exposition in Veilguard is a little too utilitarian, but that doesn't mean none of the dialogue is good or that prior games didn't also sometimes have this issue here and there.

I also generally dislike when people put the bar for good writing — and all writing too, not even just dialogue writing, ALL writing — at mic-drop sentences that still sound good completely divorced from context, because that really just reduces "good writing" down to like fake-deep philosophizing or witty quips exclusively. sometimes, a really good bit of dialogue sounds like a completely normal sentence out of context.

mmmm musical cultivator shen yuan again. Feng Xuanlu, the Wind Song. He has this well-loved wooden pipe he inherited from is adoptive father that he uses on occasion. When the traveling day gets slow and he doesn't feel like singing, when he's stressed, when night falls and he's sitting around a fire with his troupe and they've all had a little bit to drink.

His hair is long and black, always tied up into a ponytail or a braid of some sort. When he's in camp he loosens it up until its splayed messily over his shoulder. He has crows feet around his eyes that scrunch up when he smiles. His eyes are bamboo green and his hands are rough and callused from years of plucking strings and work. He has scars on his back that he won't explain the origins of.

His voice is low and warm like a fire, it gets raspy in the mornings or when he's been humming or singing for too long. He speaks like there's sunshine dripping off his tongue. He speaks soft, he speaks and his voice takes up the entire room. He's spent over a decade hearing his praises getting sung and he still gets shy over it sometimes.

Whenever he goes into town he has to have at least three other musicians with him at all times -- not his decision of course, but the unanimous choice of his companions. Shen Yuan gathers admirers everywhere he goes, and his companions have long since learned that their dear friend and leader is completely unaware of it. So they have to beat off these suitors with sticks.

okay enough with the ship discourse! let's lighten the mood with some season 10 discussions! I'm really really excited to see the latter half of the story, and I'm super curious how this will going into next months update too! chocolate bark, and whatever second cookie that'll come in july, I cannot wait to see how things play out, the dragons have some of the most interesting lore in all of CR history (second only to the Novas hehehe my awesome space super sentai family 😄)

I actually meant to make a separate post talking about my thoughts on Season 10 of Ovenbreak, but I was always too busy to do so. Your ask gives me an excuse lol

I have LOVED this update so far. It's so great. The story is so great. Longan Dragon being 1000000000000 kilometers long and looking like an eldritch horror? Basically being Jörmungandr from Norse myth? Peak. Longan Dragon trapping everyone in some kind of mind prison and forcing them to endure constant pyschological assault? Peak. More dragon family lore? Peak. Chocolate Bark? Peak, I love him, he's so handsome and perfect, if only he was in Kingdom too

I think what I've enjoyed most so far is:

Dark Choco and Chocolate Bark backstory. I really enjoy their little mentor/student bond. CB is such a fun dude. He's tough but he's lighthearted and has a sense of humor. The way he speaks to DC is so charming, he's like a older brother or uncle almost

I think Dark Choco really needed someone like this in his life, you know? It's a big shame he left, even if it was for an important mission. It makes me wonder how differently things would've turned out if he'd stayed.

Also...

"My father" this, "my father" that. #SayHisName, Devsis lol

It's cool to get official confirmation that the Dark Cacao Kingdom exists (existed?) in Ovenbreak as well. And by extension, Dark Cacao himself exists (existed?) there too. And... he's not the most affectionate dad still lol. It's ok, he's still my favorite Ancient and Kingdom character. I am begging and pleading Devsis for more lore on this, hell give us a whole update focusing on Dark Choco PLEASE, he's been so neglected in OB and it's been a huge shame because he gets more attention in Kingdom. I love Dark Choco, I love how tragic he is, I love his redemption arc. (It's admittedly... less compelling here than it is in CRK, but that can be fixed with a Dark Choco-focused update imo)

I just really, really adore seeing the dragons interact with each other. I love their dynamic SO much, they're my favorite group in this whole series. I'm nutso about them individually and as a family/clan. It's been awesome learning more about Lychee and Longan especially; I love Lychee's unwilling attachment to Rambutan and her apparent longing for proper attention from/bonding with Longan, I love the way the Pitaya-Ananas-Lotus trio bicker and banter, THE LONGAN CHARACTER STUDY‼️‼️‼️ Pitaya may be my favorite dragon but Longan is the most complex and interesting one by far. The warped affection he feels for his family. The need to protect and govern them. The way he perceives time and the world at large. His sociopathic desire for absolute control and revenge for perceived injustices. The way he tries to manipulate the others into agreeing with him and going along with his plans (those scenes in the Dark Realm are fucking crazy. The way he warps and weaponizes their emotions and memories is actual textbook abuser/cult brainwashing shit)

What the actual fuck dude. Ok, Charles Manson lol. And I thought Shadow Milk was bad. (No lie I find Longan Dragon 10x more intimidating than Shadow Milk. He exudes an aura that SM simply does not. THIS is power. THIS is boundless knowledge sharpened into a blade and held against your throat. Shadow Milk may be a god but Longan Dragon is above even godhood. I'm way more scared of Longan than any of the Beasts)

Biggest scene for me though?

In hindsight... yeah it was kind of obvious something was up with Lotus Dragon lol. The one flower in a group of fruits. Pretty on the nose. But it's still crazy to think about, you know? What happened to the other Flower Dragons? Why is Lotus the only one left? How did the other Fruit Dragons feel about taking her in? How did SHE feel about that, essentially being adopted by a rival clan? What if they had something to do with the Flower Dragons' demise? They better address this in the next half of the story istg. I will lose it. I WILL write a sternly worded email to Devsisters. I WILL cry

What this says about Longan's character is also quite interesting. It appears that his respect and affection for dragons actually does extend beyond his own immediate family. Enough to take in an orphan. This capacity for compassion and generosity is so unlike how Longan normally behaves. It makes for a really fascinating pivot from his usual modus operandi and adds a lot of depth to his thinking and character

(honestly, this makes me want and hope for Longan Dragon's surrender even more. I've always thought that Longan willingly standing down and ceding victory to the other dragons would be more impactful than him simply being beaten the normal way, aka through the Power of Friendship and Punching Stuff. I want Longan's love for his family to win in the end. I want him to come to realize that he really would have no choice but to eradicate his family in order to achieve his goals, and then forfeit because he could never bring himself to do it. They're the reason why he's doing any of this in the first place. I don't want him to change his mind about mortals or anything, he can stay a genocidal race supremacist lol. I just think it would be more interesting if he willingly stopped what he was doing just because he can't let go of his kin. Perhaps he truly is only clinging to an idyllic past long dead. It would hurt. Hurt his pride, his ego. But their preservation would require the destruction of his clan and he cannot stand for that. THEY are his mission. THEY are his dream. Yes, Longan will forever mourn this loss as he shall forever mourn the past itself. But at least he'll still have those four afterwards. Even if they hate him.)
