This reminds me so deeply of me being on needles and pins for five goddamn years if it was six about Western Maryland 1309. I'm so glad there's been a management shakeup there and they actually seem to talk about things more now. But damn was it ever frustrating waiting and waiting for any news at all and when there was news it was always an excuse. "oh we're waiting for the firebricks to come in, it's a supply chain issue now." my father and I drove along the WMSR one day after the restoration was finally completed and were aghast to see a firebrick factory with firebricks piled temptingly, almost coyly, high in the air. admittedly they probably weren't the specific kind of firebrick the railroad needed but if certain facebook foamers had seen that factory before the restoration was complete then damn would we have been inundated with memes and conspiracy theories which is always the result from these endless damn silences.

I just realized I'm a bad person to ask about hot takes because I don't spend enough time talking to other members of most communities to know what is and isn't controversial, so this might be lukewarm at best but I will say: the more I look into certain restoration projects the less I like how much gets obfuscated in the locomotive restoration world. Which is to say, I don't think anyone who goes into restoring a locomotive goes in with bad intentions, but I sense a constant need to present nothing but the best possible version of the project at all times and it ends up meaning that bad news gets delayed and the donors get nothing but radio silence until it's too late and there's no hope of saving the project.

To me, it feels like a culture thing. The guys doing the restoration work want to continue to work on their baby and don't want to seem like they're asking too much or trying to tackle the impossible, but the truth is that bad news is better than no news, and people should be allowed the opportunity to have a realistic version of the hurdles involved, even if it means it's going to cost more or owning up to having made a mistake.

I'm being vague on purpose because I don't want to point fingers and say "I think this project is being mishandled" because the truth is, I don't know if it's being mishandled! There's not enough information to come to any kind of conclusion!

I think a lot of train guys would respond to this by saying 'Well, if you're so worried about it you should get involved directly.' which is the dream for sure, but I'm not really able to pick up my whole life and move to fucking Pottstown to work on the T1, as much as I'd like to! (And this is not to say the T1 Trust is a bad operation, I actually think they're the gold standard that other newbuild and restoration projects should try to emulate, this is just an example.) Realistically, the most people my age and skill level are able to do is donate, but we want to donate intelligently and we want to feel involved even if we can't be physically.

Like I said, part of it is maintaining a certain public image, the other part of it (I think) is cliquey subculture drama bullshit that happens in every hobby, and I think will eventually be the death of these kinds of projects if more isn't done to keep interest in them alive. 🔥

Still working on my next weapon replacer, based on WastelandMelody's Service Rifle. It will replace the vanilla combat rifle and assault rifle. These are some of the basic working combinations available.

The combat rifle replacement features a fully working scope mount like the base mod, and combinations and leveled lists are adjusted to make sure any combat rifle with a scope spawns with one. Otherwise the scope straight up doesn't appear and it would use ironsights.

The assault rifle replacement features BUIS, and all combinations are adjusted to spawn with them. Non-scoped assault rifles spawn with flipped up sights, and scoped ones have them folded. All new parts are new instances using WMSR's unedited meshes, and not instances from the original mod. They also use the vanilla weapons' mod association (ma) keywords.

I had to work on some bugs with the scopes on the combat rifle, but for the most part the mod is done. I should be ready to release it some time next week.

I plan two versions of the mod: one with renamed weapons for the NV purists, and one that preserves the original naming scheme.

No SREP integration, sorry. It's beyond the scope of what I want to accomplish with the mod.

Western Maryland Scenic Railroad just announced a hugely awaited date for the DMV railfans and fans of the WM, the WMSR just announced that C&O #1309 will be up and running by July 1st, 2017 and on the 4th they will have regular train runs, special moves, and celebratory events.

One thing I like about WMSR 734 (aside from all the turntable spins!) is how the 6-axle NYC Mohawk Hudson tender is almost as long as the 2-8-0 is! Kind of an interesting story of how 734 came together; kitbashing—very few parts even came from the actual Western Maryland.
