Adriel and Elon musk are lowkey the same but neither of them would have the self awareness to realize that, and would so thus completely loathe each other

Turns out I still have a lot more thoughts on an Innocent XIV papacy in the world of Warrior Nuns (i.e put everyone in Conclave (2024) into Situations) beyond the sister warriors debating the political climate of the papal election as if it was US presidential election (or that I just want to see Camilla having violent, murderous thoughts against Tedesco)
But let’s backtrack a bit first to the Pope before this Conclave, especially for those not familiar with the Warrior Nun universe. First just for clarity’s sake, the late pope here refers to the movie’s dead pope and Duretti refers to the character in Warrior Nun that I will put as the supreme pontiff after him and before Vincent Benitez (neither of them has their papal name stated and it’s driving me up the wall). I find out it is also impossible to first talk about the POV of Lawrence as the events unfold in WN s2. (...this is part 1, I have abandoned the idea of writing everything out in one post and even this is long)
Imagine Thomas Lawrence, still recovering from his treatment and surgery prostate cancer, has to hear from the nurses that the Pope has passed away peacefully in his sleep. The man, who refused his resignation and told him that he was not done as the manager, didn’t even give him enough time to get well enough before shuffling off this mortal coil. Lawrence is angry at himself for being so weak and disappointing, then angry at the late pope for saddling him with this responsibility that he couldn’t even perform, then angry at himself again for being angry at a dead man. He prayed, and nothing answered back. The head nurse tutted at him the next morning when she saw the enormous dark circles under his eyes and informed him he has a visitor.
Cardinal Francesco Duretti. His smile was condescending and his words of asking after his health empty, almost talking too fast as if he wanted to get to the point and be done with it, which was Lawrence was still too weak for the arduous proceeding that would be the Conclave. He knew that of course and maintaining the stiff upper lip the English was renowned for, suggested that Aldo Bellini would be a good person to take charge of organising the Conclave. Duretti didn’t say anything and Lawrence only realised then that he was being excluded from the entire election. By the time he had recovered from the shock, Duretti was already gone, leaving behind the ghost of his hand on Lawrence’s shoulders and that vague promise that ‘we will take care of everything, don’t worry Thomas’. Insufferable, the man and the situation.
A month and a day later, they have a new Pope. By then, Lawrence had already been discharged and can walk around unassisted so he chose to slum in his apartment in Rome, at the edge of the Vatican — so close to the action yet so far away— watching the TV in horror as Duretti walked out the Apostolic Palace in papal vestments. Look what happened when you are not there, he muttered to himself. He turned off the TV in a fit of spite and the whole room suddenly shook. Earthquake? Or God’s punishment for his self-centred thoughts. He turned the TV back on hastily and it was an explosion, right next to the St Peter's Basilica. The live TV stream cut off then.
He heard from Ray later, explained in hushed tone and hurried words, that the explosion was from beneath the Vatican and that a being, Adriel, emerged to declare himself an angel to save mankind. Before Ray hung up, he urged Lawrence to stay away from the Vatican until the situation clears up. Lawrence wondered if it was an order from Duretti.
He found out the next day Ray was transferred to Poland.
Still, an angel? He was a religious man but everything had to have a limit.
Prayers had been difficult ever since his diagnosis but two months later, being alone with little human interaction, it had been even more of a labour. He might as well been yelling at the sky like the old man he was and yielded approximately the same result. Which was none whatsoever. He dared not call anyone least they followed Ray’s footstep in exile. The news provided no insight except for the manifesto of the so-called Firstborn Children, claiming to be the bearers of Adriel’s miracles and coverting any living soul that would hear them. He stopped wearing his clerical collar when he went out for groceries, he will not be identified as the likes of them. He also didn’t know how much longer he could take this…limbo. No dismissal, but also no call for action.
(He really hoped his actual retirement would not be this way.)
He didn’t pray on it but it was answered anyway, in the most violent way possible. Aldo, appearing in his doorway, covered head to toe with blood, the rusty scent knocked Lawrence sideways. A heavily-sugared tea later and Lawrence carefully wiping away the crusting fluid from his friend’s face, he heard how Duretti has called for a meeting among the Cardinal Bishops and explained to them the danger Adriel posed to the whole world, how it immediately went to hell: brothers turning on each other, a blood bath which saw the loss of ten of their brothers and betrayal of more. Duretti escaped by the skin of his teeth (saved by a…nun with a sword as a cane? Aldo’s mind must be addled by the shock) and Wozniak pulled Bellini out of the room before someone noticed one of the side doors were never locked. He has gone back to his homeland of Poland to shake off anyone who might be coming after them.
Aldo was now officially in hiding and Lawrence, realised way too late, that he was too, had been in this state since Duretti’s election. He went out less, bought more supplies every time, and tried his very best to care for his oldest friend while he was turning into a shadow of himself in fear and self-hatred. Lawrence had no time for prayer.
Duretti died. They didn’t hear it from an acquaintance or on the news. They watched it happen, on a livestream available to the entire world. The Pope stood bravely against the heretic and was struck down by an actual bolt of lightning. Lawrence gasped out loud and Aldo squeezed his hand so hard that he didn’t feel like it belong to him anymore. He might not like Duretti but no one deserved a gruesome and public death like that. Part of him was still thinking about procedures, about the next conclave [no seriously, how does one announce sede vacante when the body is doing a great impression of the bottom of a charcoal grill?] and he was disgusted with himself.
After that night, the sky turned golden and the light outside burns. Neither of them can go out (not that Aldo had even stepped out of his room after that night) and Lawrence feared that this was going to be the end but something in him told him to try anyway, to stretch his hand out towards the window, even if it felt like he was plunging his hand into scalding water every morning he tried. Hope and despair all mixed into one, alive, but in so much pain.
Then a week later, the sky cleared up and he could go out without every synapse in him light up in agony. His phone rang for the first time in months. Adriel had disappeared, the Dean of the College of Cardinals and the Secretary of State were needed. If they weren’t already in those position during the late Pope’s tenure, the massacre that Aldo escaped had ensured that they were now the two most senior cardinals in the world.
They went to the Vatican City (no one mentioned it took Lawrence almost a day to convinced Aldo it's safe to be out) and the hostility was thick in the air, no one can be trusted and everyone was suspicious of everyone else but themselves. Lawrence had never been so happy and relieved to see Ray and Wozniak waiting for them in the foyer of Casa Santa Marta. So relieved that his first reaction was to hug Ray but he was hugged back just as fiercely so no one said anything. He had to thank Janusz for saving Aldo when he had the chance, he reminded himself.
They retreated to the Late Pope’s room to discuss. No one had bothered to unseal the room after Duretti was elected (he lived at the Apostolic Palace so he didn’t need the room, big surprise) and with everything that followed, it’s not like anyone was staying at the Vatican. Turned out Ray and Janusz had found each other in Warsaw and they tried to gather as many information they could under the circumstances. Actual demon possession was a thing now and there was no way of knowing who was possessed until they showed their true colour and by then it’d too late.
The public and gruesome of Duretti had caused the global crisis of faith, all dioceses were haemorrhaging believers and priests alike, some churches were abandoned outright. The UK was in complete disarray, no least because the Archbishop of Cantebury had ‘vanished’ after a meeting that Duretti called. One look at Aldo’s shudder and the knowing look shared between Aldo and Janusz at the mention of his name and everyone knew of his fate. There were faint noise of the IRA planning a come back and Lawrence already had the first few lines of the press release drafted in his head before shaking them off.
There were a power vacuum in the Universal Church, not just the Vatican and they need a new leader like, yesterday.
So Thomas Lawrence, Dean of the College of Cardinals, had a Conclave to organise.

I have assigned the WN girls Lightsaber colors!
Ps. I am not old, but all the stuff I was into when I was younger is, so all my knowledge is like pre-disney + Ahsoka, the character, not the show. Some of these are more thought out than others.
Ava: Blue - it closely resembles the Divinium sword, and it is most associated with Anakins chosen one deal.
Beatrice: Yellow - Beatrice looks good with yellow. Also usually used by guards and sentinels.
Lilith: Dark Orange - dark orange lightsabers are frequently used to indicate someone who exists in close connection to the dark side, but does not necessarily practice dark side.
Camila: Purple - purple coloration usually denotes someone with a unique specific ability, like Mace Windu's shatterpoint vision. Camila has her connection to Adriel.
Yasmine: Green - to symbolize her newness to the order.
Mother Superion: Yellow - yellow sabers are generally used by guards and caretakers.
Mary: Blaster.
as someone who has watched all the movies and a few of the shows (rip my unproductive ass who cannot find the energy to even start w the clone wars that show has too many seasons + episodes) HELL YEAH

The Book of Josephine - Chapter 10
Hi everyone, I've published the next chapter of my Warrior Nun spin off. I was honestly overwhelmed with the response from the last chapter! thank you for hearing me out on this one haha
Here's an excerpt! From Chapter 10:
Job 12:12, "Is not wisdom found among the aged? Does not long life bring understanding?" [Genesis, Part X]
Correspondence File – I.3.2014-11/SHJ/NE
Dear Father Vincent,
A true miracle has occurred in New Jersey. But first—I must confess something to you.
Our reseArch into demonic possession has continueD beyond what I had previously communicated. The miRacle, however, is as follows. I tasked the Codex (and the Novice, keep in mind) with finding a solution to the increased casualties of our sIsters in recent outbreaks. Scouring our history, they discovered the use of divinium tattoos by sistErs in the time of Wn. Marthe to evade possession by wraith demons (Codex CdA 1798 for reference). This method has been tested using both organic divinium sources and divinium from the armor of AdrieL, and it is effective indeed. This conclusion also requires you to learn of other information I have kept from you—my sincerest apologIes for the deceit, but you will find it justified. LaSt year, we recovered the skeleton of a Tarask—yes, that Tarask—from the site of an outbreak in CoLorado. We have cOnfirmed the skeleton to be composed of divinium, vindicating the old records that speculated the metal comes from an oRganic source. The sisters useD the Tarask fossil for their tAttoos, while I chose to use diviniuM from Adriel’s armor for my own—I dislikEd the risk of demonic contamiNation. I suggest you do the same—use the angel’s armor for your own protection. We have enough of the Tarask’s remains left to send for other sisters, should you find this development useful. Results so far have been incredibly promising, as we have tested the tattoos using a demon in our care. Sisters will continue to report on the effectivity of tattoos on field missions. East Outreach leaves for North Carolina tomorrow morning.
Do this as soon as possible, Vincent—The Lord speaks to me in new ways.
Psalm 85:8
Blessings,
Father Isaac, NE-OCS
In this life or the Next.

Correspondence File – SHJ.17.2014-11/SHJ/NE
Dear Mother Superion,
Suzanne, I hope you are well. I can only imagine how difficult it is to settle into your new responsibilities after the events of last few months. I sympathize with your grief, as I share in my own with the passing of Mother Superion. She was my third Superion, and the most personable I have served. We met many times during her life and wrote to each other several times a year. I want to reassure you that my line is always open—while I cannot speak over the phone, let my voice in writing bring you some comfort should you allow or ask for my guidance or friendship, personally, or if you seek information from the Codex.
Father Isaac has written to Father Vincent of our discoveries. The use of divinium tattoos will be effective in our fight, I believe. May this bring you some security and personal reassurance that you no longer need to feel responsible for putting your sisters in danger—at least that they will be at less risk on field missions. I am confident in the training that you provide them; without the danger of possession, they can rely on your ample guidance to find and defeat Satan in all his hiding places.
I must also inform you that information has been omitted from Isaac’s report, for a reason I cannot determine. When our chapter recovered the Tarask’s skeleton, the Novice discovered that a ring of bone in the eye socket of the demon provides one with the ability to see wraith demons and reveals the presence of Divinium without proximity to the Halo. We have named the ring “Sclera” due to its anatomical position in the Tarask. If you would like to read the reports of our exorcisms using this tool, I would be more than willing to send them to the Cat’s Cradle. If you would like us to send the Sclera itself for examination, I am sure it can be arranged, although Father Isaac was opposed to this idea.
Father Isaac has opened a request thread to all other chapters to send any possible extant uncatalogued records in regard to the death of the Angel Adriel, early OCS history, Areala, and Warrior Nun Cora. As you are aware, the Codex does not contain any of Cora’s records, and it is my belief these records were possibly destroyed by her adversaries. Did this request come from Cat’s Cradle? I can’t find any records of recent correspondence that might require this information. I would be willing to supply what knowledge I can on this subject should Shannon need it. 2 Corinzi 2:11 - ... affinché non siamo raggirati da Satana; infatti non ignoriamo le sue macchinazioni.
Pax tecum,
Codex Sr. Josephine

Femslash February Unofficial Day 6 (WN)
Prompt: AU
--
Ava had not stolen the godtech herself.  The Halo had been thrust upon her lifeless body.  But now Ava held the godtech, embraced it, traveled the wormholes and conversed with the AI gods themselves.  Ava had fought the ascended Lilith, summoned Tarasks to her side, and defeated the avatar Adriel.
But the godtech had not changed Ava.  Of that, Beatrice was sure.  Ava had deserved the Halo, even before her resurrection.  Something in the Other Realm that had changed Ava, taken her away from Beatrice only to return her transformed, unfeeling.
It was Reya who had stolen Sister Beatrice’s love.
--
(Feel free to follow along on AO3 even though I'll probably post to Tumblr first each day.)
Prompt list is here.

Cannot get over how Adriel really had this big speech prepared for when he first met Ava to get her on his side and then literally as soon as he touches her she gets a vision that reveals exactly what really happened. Like dude had a thousand years to plan for this and accidentally got revealed as the lying dipshit he is literally two seconds after the lie

Think about the ego Adriel has. He’s so sure everyone would be obsessed with him. So sure that he can manipulate everyone.
His reaction when Ava and Duretti rejected him. And the confidence he shows when manipulates Lilith. When Camilla contacts him he’s so sure it means Camilla gonna turn to him.
That ego is huge.
I know lots of us think that is hilarious all his minions’ chanting is nothing but his name. But if we take that as his intention and possibly enjoy it. Combine with how much he enjoys his power over anyone and anything.
That's a super huge ego right there. Disgustingly big. Like probably potentially 10 times bigger than Trump. Bad metaphor but you know what I mean.
By the way, don’t know you guys, but if someone chants my name all day? You bet I’d snap before lunch and kill them.

"Yeah, I don't really have any theories as to the dearth of content about other ships"
Trying to think of some was kind of the point to the post, though ;)
But I do agree with you that it's probably due to more than one single cause at work. If it were simple, we'd just have quickly pointed out a solution to the equation very early on in this conversation, after all, but we know it's more complex than "fans are X, they want Y".
The main character draw certainly must be a factor, at least for some people, although the triad of traits is arguably easily distributed amongst the others as the adjectives "hot" and "badass" are par for the course in this show -- and there is currently nothing in canon that could contradict any other characters' as having a sexuality other than straight (Camila mentions and reacts to a man she thinks attractive and Lilith kisses Adriel, sure, but so did Ava make out with JC and that never stopped her whereas Jillian and Superion haven't even had past relationship histories hinted at. Yasmine is also out in the open. Mary and Shannon have common history constantly alluded to).
But supercorp is an interesting example where a canon f/f pairing gets less attention than the non-canon one -- however, as you say, it involves the main character so that might be a clue. Of course I can't tell for sure and someone from the Supergirl fandom would be more qualified to speak on this, but as someone who has known of Katie McGrath since her Merlin days, well... I think she might just be the answer here, lol.
Back to WN, I wouldn't say AUs are meant to better canon. If anything, they're a sort of concurrent to it, a reimagining of it, a dialogue with it, perhaps, only from another point a view, another setting -- unless we're talking canon divergence, which I tend to think of as something else rather than a full-blown alternate universe. I also wouldn't say the motivation for writing fic in general is bettering canon; maybe it is for some, regarding some stories, in some occasions, for some reasons, but I hesitate to say it's the overall tendency -- first, because there is quite a good deal of fic out there that just makes life even more miserable to the characters, and secondly because we're actually branching out from the subject at hand since the fic stats on AO3 were merely a springboard to ponder on shipping rather than fic writing in itself and shipping isn't necessarily dependent on that (regardless of how central fics usually are to it). It's just that trying to understand fandom behaviour is easier when you have some sort of data to fall back on and that data is more promptly manageable when there is an organised archive the likes of which are unheard of for, say, fanart.
(Even if we must also take into consideration that AO3 isn't the end-all be-all; it's a reflection of those WN fans who use it, numerous as they may be, but not necessarily of the entire WN fanbase. This might not be as crucial to keep in mind as it was for older fandoms which were more widespread in the more "wild" times of fan culture internet, but it's still a variable we shouldn't wholly ignore.)
As for CamLil being "popular" but not being as present all by itself, that's also part of the issue I'm trying to get at. I'm not sure it is all that popular -- one would have to sift through the fics tagged with it to see if they really feature the ship or not, especially those where there is avatrice too. That's why I talked about "spam" in my initial post and what I also developed a bit more in the reply to the anon ask I received because of it, because there have been instances where a pairing is marked down as being a part of the story and yet having no real space in it whatsoever, only mentioned as a footnote to the monolith of avatrice. That hardly qualifies as being popular, surely.
As for a necessary quantity of fans to get a ship going, yes, I do agree although, on the other hand, those are things that feed into one another. Excitement might spread because of some group of enthusiastic/talented/popular fans proposing a pairing and creating works for it even if the ship is small. That can be a matter of chance, too.
Popularity does seems to be a concern. There has been quite a conversation on the topic in general terms here, which I think is worth taking a peek at. It's disheartening to think some people would go through the trouble of writing something for numbers rather than for themselves, but then I can't speak on that as I am literally the person who writes shit she knows few people will enjoy without caring a fig for that. I'm a bit too old to worry about being ~popular (on the internet of all places...), though I can see there might be a large portion of fans who feel differently. It's a pity, but alas.
Not to mention the other side of being involved in rarepair fandom business, which is that the community that forms around it might be smaller, but it will likely also be more passionate and faithful -- the big ship people can come and go through hundreds or thousands of fics, but the rareship people pretty much only have you and a handful of other creators (if they're lucky) and they will probably hover around you for longer and support you in ways that those who can lose count of how many authors they follow won't.
To end this at last, I'm also rather picky about ships, despite it all, but those I like I really like. I'm just not opposed to visit some other playgrounds from time to time, also as a way to challenge myself as a writer, to write something fresh and new. I just probably won't ever do that for the Very Big Ships to which I end up overexposed thanks to fandom, regardless of my careful curation -- and that includes the one whose hegemony more or less sparked this whole discussion to begin with :)
You know, for a show with so many female characters that so many of us love given how they all get time in the spotlight one way or another and they fill that time up rather wonderfully since they are deeper and more developed than what we're used to seeing in general media, it is peculiar (to say the least) to see so few "alternative" ships to the main one.
I'm not saying the canon ship doesn't deserve its attention -- I'm wondering instead why the canon ship and it alone seem to guide the WN fans who just so happen to enjoy writing/reading fic or fanart or whatever.
You'd think all these cool women would inspire more ships or combinations thereof, but those of us who aren't invested in avatrice just... Float along, around one another, ignored (and, yes, mostly undisturbed too; being unpopular does have its advantages and that includes a lot less weirdos leaving you strange or awkward messages -- it does not, however, shield us from people flooding our goddamn tags on AO3 with fic that has nothing to do with our little ships and I do wish such negligence of the pairing itself meant we didn't have to deal with this spam...)
I am also not saying that fandom activity should be based solely on shipping (and recently someone on Reddit was rather confused by the fact that a lot of it is, which is quite an interesting topic to discuss in itself -- after all, there is more to fan creativity than shippy fic... Or there used to be), merely that, here, it appears that a canon relationship can outshine interest in the other, non-canon ones. It's already there and it was doubtless well-done by the show, so it's natural that it should claim people's attention, sure. It's just that being canon was never the parameter for whether people were interested in these or those two (or more) characters maybe being involved and trying to explore what that could mean through fanwork.
There has always been a complaint haunting fandom spaces concerning the minuscule amounts of f/f fic, art, discussion, w/e based on how few (interesting or sympathetic or relatable) female characters there are in media at large. So what I'm curious about is why fan creations made around WN -- a show that finally gives us a whole cast of female characters that are what we have been craving for decades -- don't also reflect its diversity.
There are alternative ships (I'm here, all happy in my tiny Doctor Superion bubble, and I know there are Camila/Lilith, Ava/Lilith, Mary/Shannon, Mary/Lilith shippers out there, so a warm hello to you if you're reading this), but go on AO3 and compare the numbers of things tagged with these proper pairings to the grand total of WN stories. Better (or worse) still, do so with the "otp: true" trick or simply by excluding avatrice from the search to see how many are left.
It's... A considerable difference. And a mystery, at least to me.
