So there I finished Joyful Reunion. Good book, I was glad to see Duan Ling back although yeah the epilogue was ykn too quick.

VAGUE SPOILERS BELOW BEWARE XD (also the identity of ML=)

Then again the whole story is soooo long I understand speeding it up when we know Duan Ling wouldn't lose. Besides it was more for the closure with Lang Junxia than anything else!

Much more a coming of age about the lost ruler who his to find his way back to his family and nation than a romance but despite the hard start I liked Wu Du and his romance with Duan Ling. He's very tsuntsun at the start but also sincere. Wasn't anything super revolutionary but they were nice together and it won't cause trouble with DL as Emperor so cheering them on xD

Anyways now I can rest. I felt possessed while reading this lol. Now the image I won't forget from this book will be that tragic final separation between father and son at Shangjing and the end of book 3 (? I think?) with Duan Ling atop the city walls against Batu. I really liked that subplot and its resolution (part of why I wanted the battle in the epilogue to be left to our imagination perhaps).

All the little details between he different characters ad the relationships were pretty good though, I felt that's where the story shines. With these parting and reunions. It's also very much commenting on loyalty to your people/nation and place of birth, of where you make a home. Humming neutrally, I think it worked with Duan Ling who is heir to the Chen. That old notion of the ruler is the people is the ruler.

But also the book is titled by a song about the military defeat and humiliation of Chen by Liao and is also the song that connects Duan Ling to his father, Lang Junxia, the womne who gave their lifes for him (Xunchun and Ding Zhi), and Wu Du. So I think it says it all.
