Thinking about name pronunciation discourse. A common line you hear is that "its not that hard to pronounce someone's name correctly" when discussing non English, usually Asian or African, names. A common retort is that actually is kinda is, if the phonemes don't exist in your native tongue then you're almost certainly not actually pronouncing it correctly, even if you look it up and put in some effort; at best you're pronouncing it with a thick accent, and requiring everyone to go through that effort just to mispronounce it any seems kinda silly.

I've realized that, since I did French immersion in Canada, I've actually experienced a form of this. My name was pronounced in both English phonemes and French phonemes ccording to how it's spelled, since the two languages (almost) share an alphabet. My name would often be localized to whatever language we were speaking in, despite everyone involved being entirely able to pronounce English perfectly. It wasn't a case of people having trouble with unusual spelling or phonemes, they could have pronounced my name "correctly" and in other contexts did pronounce my name "correctly", but we were in French class, speaking French, and so sometimes my name was simply pronounced the way it would be in French.

And like, it was fine. I never felt like my name pronounced in French wasn't "my name" or a mispronounciation or whatever. They were pronouncing my name respectfully according to the rules of the language we were speaking.

Now I don't think this is a direct parallel to e.g. Huanhuan being irritated that her name is always pronounced "Wonwon" (rhyming with wonton). I experience complete strangers pronouncing my name correctly all the time without instruction, and no one ever balks at how complicated my name is. I think it's understandable for Huanhuan to be irritated at the situation.

I'm mostly just noting this because of what I mentioned above: my name pronounced in French was still my name, and the idea that localizing it to be pronounced more in line with how the majority are speaking was inherently disrespectful just never occurred to me, growing up.

story coming along nicely but the vibe is of a like slightly differnet flavour which i dont dislike at all if anything its actually perfect for that other story i had in mind but put off cuz i needed more prep and so like its like mmmhmhmh thats part of the prep now, that said i kept being like whats that exactly its a familiar twinge in the character's behaviour and for a sec i was like, kay is it like some sort of tsunderism which id have maybe not vibed with so it was surprising but it wasnt a matter of denial of feelings right or pretense on that denial but rather a clinging to a fake rationale and then it hit me that it was just a lacroix quantity hint of wonwonism there, reuse recycle or smth, its a faint presence in the attempt at justifying things under a logical lense and thus moving the behaviour to fit that idea of No No this is all Rational and Grounded while words and actions clash, but its just in a detail of it all ya get. so it barely is there no one would go and point at it and go ah yes, wonwon essence rather its smth only iiii and my lucky darlings reading this are privy to, but anyway this is all cuz of the leaves of absence
