Industry and Grandeur - Chapter 8
England’s brass timepiece ticks softly, and yet, the page before him is still bare.
By now, a report to Queen Victoria detailing the day’s events should have been completed, or at least drafted. Instead, the pen and inkwell sit untouched.
Darkness hangs gently around the soft edges of the apartment’s lamps. They hiss quietly, expending their gas for pale, sleepy light. England’s head rests upon the writing desk. Its mahogany wood has grown warm against his temple, so he shifts, rolling his head to the other side and finding a cooler spot to soothe his skull. His eyes scan the room in a vain attempt at distraction.
Crown moulding and embellished panels decorate the walls, accented by long, flowing drapes and elegant, upholstered furniture. This hotel room is much more luxurious than the coaching inns and taverns which once populated the city. Dwindling family-run businesses cannot compete with four-storeyed arcade towers, private bathrooms, high windows, and elaborate carpets. This, too, is another sign of progress – an exemplar of the ever-changing future.
England grimaces.
A vision of that blasted lipstick smudge appears in his mind’s eye. Must they discuss it? Canada has been alive for centuries and based on tonight’s events, he obviously knows how courtship works. If England broached the subject, what would they possibly talk about? Christ, he would rather not. It would save them both the embarrassment. And were things to progress towards their... natural conclusion... there would be no consequences beyond a petty scandal anyway. Besides, with their kind, fathering children is impossible. No, damn the lipstick; that is not the real concern!
The crux of the matter is... adulthood.
England shuts his eyes. Head throbbing, his mind drifts to the early months of 1813, when American raids harassed communities along the St. Lawrence River. It was just after a war meeting; while the men filed out into the cold, Canada lingered behind, wearing a sour expression on his pimpled, boyish face. England was prepared for another mild disagreement, because he had initially forbidden the boy from fighting. Their quarrel happened as expected, but instead of backing down, Canada insisted, saying: ‘This is my home. These are my people. Let me defend them.’
Noticeably, he did not say ‘our people’, and that simple change made all the difference in the world. A rare spark of something burst from behind Canada’s passive demeanour that day. He stood, straight-backed with a steady fire behind his young eyes and England could not find the words to make that spirit disappear. So, he relented, putting one of his spare uniforms on the boy’s shoulders and a rifle in his hands.
As Canada was an inch or two shorter than England then, the jacket hung loose on his smaller frame, but even so, he gave his thanks. England should have recognised those actions for what they were, but he did not. Maybe it was the plethora of stressors plaguing his mind at the time, from Napoleon to America, or some other unconscious snare. Regardless of what ailed him, he later dismissed Canada’s attitude as a rare ill temper, when of course, it was not.
It was a declaration of identity, maturity, and self-reliance. Underneath his kindly demeanour, Canada was already a grown man.
“Your people,” England murmurs to the empty room. He sits up, joints creaking from the erosion of centuries, and sighs, dragging his hands over his face.
Presently, it is the spring of 1844 – just shy of seventy-one years since everything fell apart with his former ward, America. England registers a familiar cramp in his stomach and fails to shut it out of his mind.
Through the gaps in his fingers, his eyes drift to the page. Never mind the Queen; he will write to her later. Firstly, he must sort out this neglected thing with Canada, because England cannot get anything else done until he does. What to say, though? Every book that covers respectable letter-writing offers similar advice: to speak from the heart and with only the best intentions. But what the best intentions are, England cannot often deduce, and from the twisting knot in his abdomen, he can almost feel any good will being strangled by apprehension. What if Canada turns out the same as his brother? What if everything crumbles all over again?
England has no idea how others do it. How on earth can one be laissez-faire about such things? Recalling Prussia, England remembers his words:
‘I haven’t made any plans at all!’ he declared today, followed by: ‘This is different from a campaign. I’m raising a young man!’
Is it not better to have a strict plan? One that instils good morals, loyalty, and obedience? But... if that were the proper method, England would still be on speaking terms with America. Proper speaking terms, and not the low-contact charade they have going, where discussions are sapped of emotion and only occur out of necessity. Their last correspondence involved settling a trade dispute, and letters were addressed with cold formality. ‘To whom it concerns’ is how America begins most messages he now sends across the Atlantic.
No, the old methods will only yield old results. England sighs. He takes his pen, dips it in the inkwell, and brings it to the paper.
With no memories of his mother and paltry examples from his brothers, how can he be a proper guardian without any role models to imitate? Only briefly did he ever catch snippets of family life from the humans he knew. The parents and keepers were never perfect, but plenty far exceeded others. Successful households seemed happy, close-knit, and loyal to one another.
‘I suppose... I’m striving to let him grow up – to keep him happy and healthy.’ Prussia was beaming when he said that.
England hesitates, heart wavering behind his ribs. Then, he starts writing. The words come slowly at first, trickling out of him like a thawing river on the edge of spring. Then they build momentum, flowing steadily; he writes and the pen scratches away. His brass timepiece ticks, interrupted occasionally by whispers of the world around him. Low murmurs of conversation in the room below. A footstep or two from the apartment above.
Beyond that, there is little else. Outside, the world has begun to quiet and his hotel windows that overlook the Tuileries Garden vanish. The universe shrinks down to his singular hotel room and the ink characters that carve emotion out of pulp.
It is near midnight when he finishes the statement and checks it over. It reads less like a speech and more like a letter. Perhaps that is preferable. With a flick of his wrist, he signs it as such and considers slipping it under Canada’s door. However, that would be quite cowardly.
He gets up and drags the chair aside, wood scraping against wood, and winces at the sound. Then he exits his hotel room to invade the narrow hallway space in front of Canada’s door, pausing before it. Deliberately, England smooths his frown into something normal and placid, clamping down on his final doubts. When ready, he finally knocks and waits for an answer.
For a while, there is nothing.
England’s loose fist hesitates in mid-air. Should he knock again? Perhaps Canada is asleep. Yes, that is probably a reasonable assumption. Throat dry, England swallows. It would not be terrible to have this discussion another time; after all, he has written down his thoughts, so the hardest work is done. Still....
Then, the creaking floorboards come to life, and a latch clicks open.
“Um... hello,” Canada mumbles, peeking his blonde head through the door.
England coughs. “Canada, I was hoping... erm.... Might I have a word?”
Canada slouches and his gaze slips to the ground. Silently, he steps aside and opens the door further. England enters, fingers fidgeting with the pages and pointedly avoiding eye contact.
“Um,” Canada says. “Are you upset with me?”
England halts. Then, he turns and gapes at his ward.
“Whatever for?”
Canada shrugs. “For trying to hide the truth? About the actress?”
“Ah, right. That.” England sighs. “No, I’m not cross.”
“Really?”
“Really. Just don’t let it happen again.”
Canada's neck droops lower, making him look very much like a scolded dog. England blinks, realising his awful phrasing. “Omitting the truth, I mean! Not the other thing. Don’t tell half-lies, of course. Be sure you don’t do that. But as for meeting with the actress, that’s... well, it doesn’t need to be explained in detail. Just be sure you.... Erm.”
He stops talking. Screwing his eyes shut, England mentally curses himself with every colourful phrase he can imagine. Which, after centuries of living with his brothers, is quite a multitude. He takes a steady breath, exhaling slowly, and opens his eyes. “It’s fine.”
Canada is staring, wide-eyed and owlish. “Okay.”
“Shall we have a seat?” England strains, gesturing to the small yet posh sitting area.
They shuffle to the sofas and sit opposite one another, and England finds the patterned cushions to be much stiffer than they appear. He thumbs through the pages in his lap. “You’re not in any trouble,” he manages, “but I’ve written something down that I think you should hear. And after I’ve read it, we can... have a chat about it. Is that all right?”
Canada arches an eyebrow, but he leans in, the tension melting from his frame. He nods.
“Okay.”
England sighs and glances over his handwriting once more. Iron weights burden his shoulders and lead settles in his shoes. This is about as comfortable an atmosphere as he can hope for. All that is left is to push through to the end, come what may.
He clears his throat and silently promises himself that he will not murmur or mumble his next words.

Author’s Notes
Before modern hotels, it was common for travellers to stay at coaching inns. These were small establishments with fewer rooms where you could sleep overnight while lodging your horses. They fell out of style in the 1800’s as the luxurious yet accessible hotels replaced them. Our characters are meant to be staying at Le Meurice, a hotel built in 1835 which overlooked the Tuileries Garden.
During the War of 1812, Britain’s attention was divided between fighting Napoleon’s armies in Europe and defending its North American territories.
As mentioned in my notes on Chapter 2, the War of 1812 was very important in forming the Canadian identity, including the idea that civilian soldiers were largely responsible for repelling the American invaders.
While it’s true that trade resumed between the USA and Britain after the American Revolution, the relationship was rocky for a long time, flipping between tepid and disruptive depending on numerous factors. Examples include: The Jay Treaty (1793), the War of 1812, the Caroline affair (1837), and several territorial disputes.
Many guides about proper letter writing were published in Victorian times. Often, they’d simultaneously advise to write with absolute feeling and be cautious about saying too much, or saying the wrong things. It was a difficult balancing act, to be sure.

Damascus and Silver Koftgari Indian Saber with Hand design – Universal Swords
This ornate and entirely handcrafted saber from India with its damascus blade and koftgari-inlay embellishment is in itself a display of the traditional swordsmithing arts of India. The damascus steel blade features panels of silver inlay on both sides of the blade. The blade tang is secured by filling the hollow hilt and grip with a hardened resin to solidly anchor it into the hilt. This method of sword construction is a traditional technique in India.
The sword is paired with a wood-core scabbard overlaid in vibrant velvet. Its steel components were decorated with silver koftgari to match the sword. The Damascus steel blade is crafted from the melding of two different steels into a single billet from which the smith forges the blade; the mixed steel leaves a vibrantly visible rippled patterning on the blade surface. Traditionally this was a technique done to merge harder and softer steels into a single blade to impart it with both a hardness for durability and edge retention and a degree of flexibility to prevent the blade from becoming brittle.
This was done to get good results from the quality of iron available for smithing. Damascus is now technically inferior to pure steel made from modern industrial-scale methods, but it is still desired as the beauty of Damascus is instantly notable and is a testament to the skill of the smith who forged it with the traditional methods and the blade was further embellished with silver inlay at the base of the blade. The elegant and intricate design and patterning on the hilt was created with the laborious Koftgari technique; a traditional process exemplified by Indian smiths whereby a design is etched and chiseled and then strands of silver wire is carefully hammered into the etched design. The hilt is then heated in a kiln and the silver wire is then permanently annealed into a permanent design.
The patterning of the damascus blade varies with each blade in much the same manner as all fingerprints differ. Also the Koftgari designs are made to the individual design and artistry of the smith. Therefore every one of the swords of this type are uniquely crafted and are a testament to the traditional swordsmithing techniques of India.

Composites: Medium-density fiberboard
Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) is a type of engineered wood composite that combines wood fiber residue with a resin or wax to create a “non-structural panel product” (1). It differs from plywood and particle board in that the former is made from thin sheets of wood and the latter from chips or particles. Within the category of fiberboards, it is distinguished, as the name suggests, by its density, which typically ranges between 400–800 kg/m3.
The final product created usually consists of around 80% wood fibers, with the remaining 20% being a combination of adhesives and other additives (including water). The primary resin used in commercial products is urea-formaldehyde resin, typically combined with wax. MDF was actually first invented as a way to use wood waste products generated by other industries, taking wood residues from other industries that would otherwise be burnt or sent to landfills. Though MDF and other fiberboards are primarily wood products, technically only cellulose-based fibers are required, and other biomaterials could be used in the process.
To make MDF panels, wood residue is first processed to create fiber or fiber bundles, which are then blended with the wax or resin adhesive chosen. These are shaped into mats and cured using pressure and heat. The final product can then be used in a variety of applications, most notably furniture, such as cabinets, tables, and countertops. The homogeneous density of these panels make machining easier, and tight tolerances can be allowed for when using MDF panels in a design.
As a note of caution, the urea-formaldehyde resin can create safety hazards when working with MDF. The finished, sealed product is considered non-hazardous, but anyone working with the material should exercise caution and be aware of potential off-gassing of the formaldehyde.

DIY Cabinet Makeovers
Tumblr media
Project by Max Tielman:
Keeping up with the latest trends in design can often be overwhelming, especially when you’re pinching pennies, your budget too tight for the occasional furniture splurge. Working on a budget, however, doesn’t mean you have to forgo style — especially if you’re feeling crafty. To prove our point, we teamed up with our pals over at Target and completely revamped one of their most simple, flat-packed cabinet designs (retail price: $34.99) in three different popular styles. The best part? Each of these projects are easy enough to be accomplished in less than a day and without breaking the bank. Check out all three styles, plus directions for crafting each look after the jump! —Max

INDUSTRIAL CHIC
Materials
1 Room Essentials 2-Drawer Organizer (White finish)
About 13 feet of copper piping, 3/4 inch diameter (more or less based on desired height)
8 copper 90-degree elbows (3/4 inch diameter)
4 copper T-joints (3/4 inch diameter)
2 2-hole conduit straps (3/4 inch)
8 #10 3/4 inch wood screws (for attaching conduit straps)
Roughly two feet of rope
Power drill with bit to match rope thickness
Painter’s tape
Miter saw with blade made for cutting metal
Phillips screwdriver
1) Assemble cabinet according to manufacturer’s directions. Do not attach drawer pulls.
2) Cut copper piping using miter saw into the following lengths (you may want to adjust these based on the height you need):
8 inches (4 pieces)
21 inches (8 pieces)
19.5 inches (2 pieces)
3) Insert 2 21-inch pipe pieces into the top and bottom of each copper “T” joint.
4) Attach a copper elbow at the end of each 21-inch piece. Connect other side of elbows together with 8-inch pipe pieces. This should leave you with two separate long loop-shaped pieces of piping. These are your table legs.
5) Attach each 19.5 inch piece to the leftover center hold on each “T” joint in order to create a central brace that holds the table legs together (see photograph for reference).
6) Put cabinet on its side (face up) and attach legs to cabinet bottom with metal conduit straps.
7) Cover the screw holes on the drawer fronts with painter’s tape. Drill through each hole using a bit that corresponds with the thickness of your rope. Remove painter’s tape.
8) Cut rope into two evenly-sized pieces. Feed each rope piece into the drilled holes. Adjust size as desired. Affix rope pulls by tying a tight knot on each end on the drawer interior.
9) SAFETY NOTE: Because the cabinets are fairly light weight, you will need to use the wall-mounting attachment that is provided with the cabinet hardware. This prevents the cabinet from tipping over if rattled or opened too quickly. If you’d rather not see this bit of hardware, simply affix it to your cabinet on its underside. Done!

RETRO REVIVAL
Materials
1 Room Essentials 2-Drawer Organizer (White finish)
1 Room Essentials Chesapeake Sketch Window Panel in Yellow
Threshold Jessina Knobs in Aqua
Devine Color Paint in Horizon
4 Waddell Straight Top Plates
4 Waddell 5 1/2 inch Round Tapered Legs
Mod Podge (or similar craft glue, in glossy finish)
Shellac-based primer
Sand Paper
Wood Stain
2 Foam paintbrushes
1 regular paintbrush
X-Acto Knife (or similar craft knife)
Phillips screwdriver
1) Wash and dry curtain panel according to provided washing directions. Iron out any wrinkles with a warm iron.
2) Sand the outward facing surfaces of the cabinet frame (4 sides total).
3) Apply shellac-based primer to outward facing surfaces of cabinet frame and allow to dry. Follow with 2 coats of Devine Color Horizon Paint. Allow to dry.
4) Apply 2 coats of wood stain to tapered legs according to stain manufacturer’s directions. Allow to dry.
5) Sand the front-facing side of the drawer fronts.
6) Lay drawer fronts face-up, parallel to each other.
7) Apply a generous layer of Mod Podge to both drawer fronts.
8) Lay curtain panel fabric face-up on top of drawer fronts. Wipe firmly across drawer surfaces to remove any air bubbles and to secure fabric to drawer fronts.
9) Gently apply layers of Mod Podge on top of the portions of fabric that are covering the drawer fronts. Allow to dry thoroughly.
10) Cut excess fabric away from drawer fronts, leaving about an inch around the edges of the drawer fronts.
11) Flip drawer fronts upside down and gently cut away all remaining excess fabric with your X-Acto blade. In order to protect your floors or work surface, use the disassembled box that the cabinet came in as a cutting surface.
12) Attach Threshold knobs to the center of the cabinet, using the two pre-drilled knob holes as a guide. If you have a power drill handy, it’s helpful to drill a pilot hole before you screw the knobs in. Because the cabinet panels are thinner than most wood, use the knob screws provided with the cabinet rather than those provided with the Threshold knobs.
13) Assemble cabinet according to manufacturer’s directions.
14) Place cabinet on its side and drill four top plates into the corners of cabinet underside. Screw in tapered legs. Presto! All done!

VINTAGE GLAM
Materials
1 Room Essentials 2-Drawer Organizer (Espresso finish)
Pack of paper lunch bags
Kiwi Shoe Polish in Brown
4 4-inch Bun-Foot Table Legs
Threshold Vista Square Drawer Pulls in Oil-Rubbed Bronze
Dritz Nailhead Trim in Antique Gold
Mod Podge (or similar craft glue)
Sand paper
Wood Stain
Foam paintbrush
Phillips screwdriver
1) Stain table legs according to stain manufacturer’s directions. Allow to dry.
2) Assemble cabinet frame according to manufacturer’s directions. Leave drawers unassembled at this time.
3) Sand all portions of cabinet that will be visible, including drawer fronts.
3) Decoupage your “faux leather” finish onto all outwardly visible parts of cabinet frame and drawer fronts. To create a distressed leather look, tear brown paper bags into non-uniform pieces, making sure there are no creases or straight lines. Crumple paper in your hands, uncrumple paper, apply a generous amount of Mod Podge to cabinet surface and place paper piece onto primed surface. Secure with a thin layer of Mod Podge. Repeat until entire cabinet frame and drawer fronts are covered.
4) Apply two layers of brown shoe polish to decoupaged surface. Create a uniform look by applying in small, circular strokes. Allow to dry.
5) Apply nailhead trim to the border of each drawer front, following the trim manufacturer’s directions.
6) Attach drawer pulls to drawer fronts using the pre-drilled holes. Because the cabinet material is thinner than most wood panels, use the knob screws that are provided with the cabinet, not the screws provided with the drawer pulls.
7) Assemble cabinet drawers and attach to cabinet frame following manufacturer’s directions.
8) Place cabinet on its side (front up) and screw in top plates at corners. Attach table legs. Done!

The History of Ceramics
Tumblr media
Ceramics have played a key role in architecture throughout the world. They are used in various applications, including tiles, bricks, pots, and pipes. They are also used for creating refrigerator magnets. They are very durable and are often used in industrial facilities. In addition, they can be resistant to stains and wear, making them ideal for high-traffic areas. They are also very affordable.
In the past, ceramics were associated with coldness, however, technological advancements have led to a more diverse definition of the material. Today, it can be found in a variety of colors, finishes, and styles. It can also be used to imitate fabrics, leather, wood, and more. Whether you choose a natural stone look, a classic pattern, or a contemporary design, ceramics can add a sense of style and sophistication to your home.
The earliest examples of ceramics date back to the 17th century. These tiles were used to cover the walls of buildings. They could be in the form of free-form pieces, or they could be cut into small, rectangular shapes. The Timurid Empire of Persia used the moraq technique, which consisted of plaster between tiles to create panels for wall coverings. The technique was also used to cover the interior surfaces of domes. The color schemes used in these tiles ranged from purplish dark brown to dark blue.
The minai technique was introduced in Iran in the 12th-13th centuries, and was used for producing miniature-sized tiles. This technique uses a layer of colored slip or glaze, which is applied over a secondary glaze to achieve a wider palette of colors. It was used for decorative wares in the early Ottoman period.
The سيراميك industry in Kutahya had suffered a significant downturn in the first half of the 19th century, but it slowly began to recover. Tiles from this period were decorated on late-Ottoman buildings and in private collections in Turkey. This period was characterized by the use of blue-and-white wares. The tile on the tomb of Sultan Mehmed Resad V in Eyup is an example. It was made by Hafiz Emin Usta, a Kutahya potter.
While the tiles of the late Ottoman period were based on the traditional techniques of the Seljuks, they also began to use the cuerda seca technique, which involves carving a design into the surface. This prevents the glazes from running into one another. In addition, the technique was less expensive than lead-glaze ware, and allowed the potter to paint directly on the frit body.
The tiles of the Emirate-period, on the other hand, are generally a continuation of the Seljuk techniques. They were used for decorating domestic houses, churches, and other buildings. These wares were also decorated with sgraffito and slip-decorated techniques. These types of wares continued the folk art and tastes of the Seljuks.
The demand for these tiles has increased over the years due to the rise of residential and commercial buildings. Increasing industrialization has led to a booming construction industry. The growth of this industry is expected to continue in the coming years.

Gautier reuses trees blackened by summer fires
Tumblr media
The Vendée-based furniture manufacturer Gautier buys back the burnt trees that it incorporates into its wooden panels at the same price. This is one of the components of Gautier's very technical CSR plan, which also aims to use recycled wood, vegetable glues and a reduction in packaging.
The pines damaged by the summer fires, in Landiras, in the Gironde department close to Bordeaux, or in Beaugé, in the Maine-et-Loire department, are not lost for everyone. Gautier, a furniture manufacturer in the Vendée department[1], decided to integrate them into the manufacture of its panels. "If the bark is burnt, the heart of the logs is still green," explains David Soulard, general manager of the company, that buys the trunks at the same price as its usual wood. "It's also a way to support the wood industry," he says. “And after a fire, the sooner the charred trees are felled, the sooner the forest will grow back. »
Gautier[2] has a debarking drum on its Chantonnay[3] site to remove the blackened part, that can be used as biomass or mulch. "If the heart of the burnt trunk has kept its properties, it must be used more quickly because it does not remain," explains Pierre Grolleau, head of panel activity at Gautier.
Towards 100% recycled
This reuse of burnt wood is part of a broader CSR plan[4] with a high technical content. First and foremost, Gautier wants to go from 50% to 100% recycled wood over the next five years. The company, that works with a network of partners for the collection and sorting of old furniture, has invested 6 million euros in a purification tower that uses filtration, eddy currents and float/sink separation techniques, wind tunnel…
The manufacturer has also set itself the objective of replacing, within the next four years, the glue on the panels with a vegetable glue, without compromising on its 10-year guarantee. "Today, Gautier uses a sticky mixture with a low level of formaldehyde[5]", explains David Soulard, specifying that this effort is not so much linked to the harmlessness of the product as to the carbon footprint. Out of 80,000 tons of C02, the glue accounts for 20,000, this material being produced by cracking the gas.
The company is also working on reducing the weight of packaging and the use of hydrocarbon-based raw materials. It invested 600,000 euros in 2021 in a machine capable of scanning products, "in order to cut and fold the right amount of cardboard needed for packaging". The manufacturer intends to replace the plastic and polystyrene[6] “as soon as possible”. His other major project is the establishment of “lifetime repairability” for his furniture, even the oldest.

[5] Formaldehyde (systematic name methanal) is a naturally occurring organic compound with the formula CH2O and structure H−CHO. The pure compound is a pungent, colourless gas that polymerises spontaneously into paraformaldehyde, hence it is stored as an aqueous solution (formalin), which is also used to store animal specimens. It is the simplest of the aldehydes (R−CHO). The common name of this substance comes from its similarity and relation to formic acid. Formaldehyde is an important precursor to many other materials and chemical compounds.
[6] Polystyrene (PS) is a synthetic polymer made from monomers of the aromatic hydrocarbon styrene. Polystyrene can be solid or foamed. General-purpose polystyrene is clear, hard, and brittle. It is an inexpensive resin per unit weight. It is a poor barrier to oxygen and water vapour and has a relatively low melting point. Polystyrene is one of the most widely used plastics, the scale of its production being several million tonnes per year. Polystyrene can be naturally transparent, but can be coloured with colorants. Uses include protective packaging (such as packing peanuts and in the jewel cases used for storage of optical discs such as CDs and occasionally DVDs), containers, lids, bottles, trays, tumblers, disposable cutlery, in the making of models, and as an alternative material for phonograph records.

How To Break Into The Manga/Light Novel Industry - Notes!
4:30 PM - 5:20 PM (PDT) | Anime Expo 2022 | Friday 1 July 2022
Panel Description: Ever wonder what it takes to work on manga or light novels? Not sure what skills you need in order to go pro? Join us in a cross-publisher roundtable where actual hiring managers...
Tumblr media
Credit: Peggy Sue Wood | @pswediting
Panelists: Jan Cash, J-Novel Club; Kristi Fernandez, J-Novel Club; Ben Applegate, Kodansha; David Goldberg, J18 Publishing + VAST Visual; Payton Cambell, Yen Press
Manga is doing really well in the American market right now. According to Bookscan (NPD.com), manga sold about 26.69 million copies in 2021, with 10.99 million copies having been sold this year (2022) so far (I believe the date this number was pulled was from May or June).
Some of the biggest names in the US-based part of this field right now are VIZ Media, Seven Seas, Yen Press (and their new imprint IZE Press), Kodansha, DENPA, and the like. There are also a lot of other names to consider, like J-Novel Club, VAST Visual & J-18 Publishing, Star Fruit Books, and more.
What are some of the things you need to get into this industry?
Realistically, translating is essential for most of this work. You need to know some part of the language and--if possible--the culture to be in this industry. Not every publisher will require this, but on the editorial side, it is good to have this as a skill set. (J-Novel Club, for example, does not require you to know the Japanese; Kodansha, however, does require you to be able to read full volumes in Japanese.) NOTE: You do not need a JLPT Score. It's nice to have but not necessary to prove skill.
In fact, the majority of the panelists started off in translating and recommended freelance translating as a means to enter the field. Quality Control (or, QC) is also a great point of entry--such as proofreading copy.
Some ways to get started in the industry as freelance translators are to email in (though, always include a resume!).
Some contacts:
[email protected] | @yenpress
[email protected] | @kodanshacomics
Sometimes translators will be asked to provide a portfolio. Portfolios can be sampled from raws (with a note that this was privately used—though please do NOT use scanlations or share work you've done for a scanlation team).
Portfolios are generally a necessity, particularly for translators. You can use raws, or you can even ask the authors directly for permission to translate their work, like on Twitter. If you have author permission and can prove it, this would be a huge boost to your application. Any experience you might have in this regard is also a plus.
Resumes are also necessary (just remember that they should be one page, not more!).
Creative Writing is a plus too.
Following-up: If you don't hear anything, you can follow up (really, try to do so only once or twice over the course of a week or two).
If you have questions, ask them. And, if you are rejected for the job, always ask for feedback. Making those improvements before applying again or at another location can help get you into this industry too.
As a final note: it is always better to overmark than undermark and explains editorial decisions made while translating or taking an edit test. Helping the test reviewers understand your thinking and process takes out the guesswork. Though on that note: if something is not there--don't correct it yourself. Note it and tell the editor (this is for letterers, translators, and proofreaders).
——
This is the first note to go up follow AX 2022, with more to follow. Please be on the lookout! - Peggy

Modern Platform Beds in a Changing Mattress Industry
Looking at platform beds today you’ll see that new design elements have made their way into many of the modern, contemporary designs being offered in bedroom click here furniture today. In this article we’ll look at why modern platform beds had to evolve to keep up with a changing mattress industry.
Today’s platform beds incorporate many new design elements into both the construction and style that is found in these modern platform beds. In this article we’ll take a look at some of the new features and designs found in these beds. We’ll also examine why these beds were required to evolve based on the needs of the mattress industry.
Platform beds are considered a sub-category of bedroom furniture and to beds. Just like there are different types of beds like wall beds, day beds, storage beds there are also platform beds. These beds are defined as a bed frame that uses slats or other materials to create a foundation that allows this bed to be able to accommodate a mattress without the need for an additional box spring or foundation unit.
Traditional platform bed designs incorporate wood elements into their design. Wood slat systems are used which provide a foundational strength for the mattress by giving it correct support. Using wood slats has long been the way in which foundations were built for wood platform beds. This design element continues today in many of the modern platform bed styles.
With the introduction of memory foam and visco-elastic style mattresses in the early 1990’s into the mattress industry, new designs would have to be considered in the construction of modern platform beds. These mattresses were different than innerspring models which had a solid steel core to them. Memory foam mattresses used high density foam materials with different layers of air-flow promoting foam and support layers that would require more consideration when being placed on a bed frame.
Memory foam mattresses posed a unique issue for platform bed manufacturers in that traditional wood slat systems with 3-4” spacing between each slat would not be sufficient in supporting mattresses that were for the most part foam. Something else would need to be used or developed to help support these mattresses. Solid panel foundations began to be introduced in modern platform bed systems which would include a steel frame or steel cross bars that could then have solid paneling placed over the top to create a solid foundation for these mattresses.
Other design elements that have made their way into platform beds over the years have been in the way of design elements. Fresh approaches to storage needs have helped to create some very contemporary solutions to platform bed storage. One such system developed by a Canadian manufacturer features a metal platform on steel spring hinges built into the bed system. This platform lifts up on the hinges (including the mattress) revealing storage beneath the mattress. Similar to how a wall bed folds up and back down. By creating a built in storage feature like this it keeps a clean look on the outside without the need for bed drawers and at the same time allows all of the space beneath the mattress to be used for storage.
Another design element is in creating storage built into the footboard and sides of the bed. Although a traditional idea, the modern concept includes having drawers built into the footboard so that they can be pulled out into the room when wall space is limited requiring the bed to be against a wall. Additional design features can be anything from optional lighting features, customizable bed features and storage options.
Modern platform beds have had to be able to change with the times. Part of that change has come about because of the mattress industry and the introduction of new styles of mattress. Changes in how beds must be made to accommodate these types of mattresses would develop including new steel support framework as well as different types of foundations like masonite and wood paneling incorporated into the bed system. Newer design elements like storage lift systems and new types of storage like footboard storage and other features bring a different type of design that traditional designs never could have achieved.

Two-Faced Jewel: Thunderbrush 23-24
Necromancers VS Plumbing
Tumblr media
A conwoman disguised as a noble and the delegation of university students studying her have arrived in the jungle city of Thunderbrush, ruled by ancient dryads and organized crime. Will they manage to stay uninvolved in shady conspiracies? (No.)
Story so far | Session log index | Previous session
Last time, the party subdued a gang of several butts from the Ashtray, who were apparently trying to collect some death goo from the secret chamber under the corpse of Dead Jane. Just as the Ashtray went running, though... "Erin Doe", aka Lydia Glye, one of the corpses they revived on the way down, told them that THERE'S A BOMB WE HAVE TO RUN- and Saelhen saw through this ruse.
There's a bomb, yes. Lydia set it. To blow up her own gang's hideout, for some reason. Weird! What're they going to do about that?
The Ashtray butts take off running before doubts can be voiced, as soon as Looseleaf finishes healing Zeego's spine injury. But the party isn't fooled- they know what she's pulling, if not why.
Oliver goes thermonuclear about this!
Tumblr media
Lydia keeps denying everything, and Oliver keeps shouting at her and keeping her contained while Looseleaf and Saelhen run downstairs to try and disarm the bomb. (Looseleaf first suggests just running and letting the place be destroyed, since it'd foil the conspiracy's plans- buuuuuut, this tree is full of theoretically-recoverable corpses who could be revived, which she'd rather not blow up.)
Tumblr media
Pretty intense! You don't even know why she did that!
Tumblr media
Downstairs, they find an extremely large... it's made out of wood, but it looks like some kind of industrial machine, with pipes going into the ceiling and walls every which way. A large control panel is set in the front. Next to said control panel is a stone object the size of a car, segmented into three sections with powder fuses trailing towards a central mechanism on top. An hourglass is balanced precariously on where the fuses converge.
The bomb is huge- it's definitely not something Lydia could've just built on the spot. It was already there, sitting in this big machine room for some reason.
Still, it's not too difficult to defuse- the balanced-hourglass lighting mechanism was a pretty crude timer, and Saelhen has no trouble disarming it by just snuffing the candle it's attached to. Seems like Lydia was just hoping no one would call her bluff about it being "impossible to defuse".
Meanwhile, upstairs...
Tumblr media
...they're not really getting along any better. Lydia keeps playing dumb, Oliver keeps excoriating her based on vibes... when Looseleaf and Saelhen get back up, and confirm that she was lying about the difficulty of disarming the fuses, she doubles down and it only gets uglier.
Tumblr media
They take a moment here to discuss their next moves. First- Saelhen managed to convince Red that she's been dead for a hundred years and is only with the party due to coercion, and so she's planning to run after the Ashtray and infiltrate their ranks. To sell the illusion of a violent escape, she has Oliver blast her with one of his pneuma-bombs, scarring her face a bit and ruining her nice kimono. Saelhen, convincingly injured, takes off after the fleeing Ashtray.
They also get Oyobi to pull out some rope and physically tie up Lydia, so Oliver isn't stuck on pneuma-goo duty. She's surprisingly good with ropes!
Tumblr media
The last thing is... how are they going to get a hold of all this black mana to stop the baddies getting it?
First- the reason they're not just letting the bomb go off is because the death field is preserving these corpses, so they roll some necromancy successfully to verify that those necromantic tethers holding their souls aren't going to evaporate instantly if they turn it off. That is the case- but of course, the clock starts ticking on rot once the death field turns off, as bacteria begin to encroach on a formerly sterile area. They'll have a couple days in which to rustle up enough healers to handle the whole place.
Looseleaf's first plan for taking the mana is... to just attach the stuff to themselves in the form of hanging empty tethers, and walk out with the stuff dangling from them in the thanatic dimension. Unfortunately... they discover that turning off the spell would stop the tethers from sticking, since the low-grade death radiation slowly killing them is what makes them count as dead enough for the black mana to stick. If they turned it off, it'd still stick to the corpses, but not to living beings like them.
Which is fine! They can just use rat corpses for that, right? Nice and portable, probably.
Step 2, though, is actually extracting the stuff, and that's harder. Ember, from the Ashtray, brought some sort of chisel-y tool they confiscated from her that seems capable of physically interacting with the death essence, but... siphoning the stuff out from these narrow channels is extremely slow. It's got this sludgy consistency, and sucking it out through a straw would be prohibitively time-consuming.
That said... there's a huge pump machine in the basement that seems designed for filling and emptying this spell array, so if they can figure out how that works, they're golden.
In the meantime... Saelhen finds the Ashtray trapped by the ground-level exit. They can't go upstairs, for some reason! But why?
Tumblr media
Some sick bastard who wants people to trip and fall, no doubt! The next Drop Lord! Certainly not Saelhen, for exactly this reason.
But the blockage... well, Saelhen knows what that is. It's the planter that's been trying to follow them invisibly. The illusory anchor should still be with Orluthe, who was supposed to have left with Curly Fry and Miriko and Vayen earlier. Is he still downstairs somewhere?
...Luckily, Looseleaf has soul links, and can just check. They appear to still be in the root complex, yeah- on the floor with that records room where they rezzed Curly Fry. Wonder what they're doing there!
(In fact, I don't think the party ever inquired about what they were doing there. Whatever it was, they got away with it scot-free!)
Anyway, Saelhen knows that the thing can just be pushed out of the way, so she offers a plan.
Tumblr media
Saelhen successfully escapes with the Ashtray- which leaves Looseleaf and Oliver downstairs to try to figure out this big pump. They try asking Lydia about it first, just in case she knows:
Tumblr media
Looseleaf then... explains the situation, how apparently there's a conspiracy that wants to kill Tonnera and take over the city, and that they want this stuff as part of their plan for some reason.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She's clearly concealing something about her reaction there. No strong feelings about "all her friends" dying? Whether or not she cares about that seems to fluctuate. Hard to get a bead on what her deal is!
They discuss what should be done with Lydia- and I have to clarify a few things about the demographics of the city. About 35% of Thunderbrush's population lives in territory controlled by or influenced by one of the Stumps, and something like a third of those are actively members of a Stump organization (though the criminality of those organizations varies). Very high crime rate in Thunderbrush, though it's mostly concentrated in the south of the city where Tonnera doesn't enforce law and order.
Tumblr media
That one's a doozy. Thunderbrush's jail system is pretty decent if you're not affiliated with a gang and you've just committed some petty crime- the walls are also the prisons and they're worse the further from the coast you get. The city guard is known to put prisoners to work on monster defense, and there's sort of a prison-to-cop pipeline where prisoners receive guardsman training and frequently have a job waiting for them when they get out. Kinda fucked, but not in a really awful way.
The problem is, if you're known to belong to a gang, it's a lot easier for the guard to just hand you over to a rival gang who wants you captured, rather than trying to fit you into an overcrowded prison system. And being a prisoner of a Stump is anecdotally bad, since they can drain you of lifeforce without worrying about keeping your strength up as a tenant or minion.
On top of all that... Lydia seems to think that she'll be just fine if they turn her over to the proper authorities. She's practically begging them to do so. Suspicious.
Tumblr media
They ultimately decide to just try and call Lydia's bluff and hand her over to the guard, and move on to trying to work out the pump. There's a bunch of shelves full of notes and books and stuff in the pump room, which they can briefly peruse, but this thing is... large and complicated. It'll take hours if not days to get things working, and they don't know if they want to stay down here long enough.
So... Looseleaf calls in some help! Specifically, she tells Zzaiya everything (and everything is a lot of crazy shit she didn't know they were doing!! what the hell!!!) and asks her to ask her fellow Artificing department students to send some enterprising engineers their way, in exchange for some nebulous reward to be determined later. Money, maybe? They did recently grave-rob a bunch of that.
Meanwhile... Saelhen follows the Ashtray out of Dead Jane's radius, and can finally breathe without taking a constant -1, -1, -1 of slowly dying from magic. They're pretty impressed she toughed it out that long without a blessing from Eman like they got!
Tumblr media
They lead her into Ashtray territory- which, contrary to expectations, is actually pretty nice. It's open, sunny farmland, dotted with ramshackle farmhouses and occasional acacia trees for the giraffes.
They take her to an unusually tall Stump. It seems like the trunk wasn't taken away like the rest were, but it's in rough shape. It's kept erect by a huge metal spike, and the whole thing is full of holes and burnt black, except where platforms and buildings of fresh wood have been bolted on. Will-O is absolutely covered in graffiti in varying styles, and the stump itself is surrounded by a bunch of new construction that's likewise done up in graffiti.
It's mostly kids around here. A teen anarchist commune, about as well-organized and stable as you might imagine.
Tumblr media
This guy, full of holes, comes out to greet the Ashtray and Saelhen. He's curious about their failure to come back with boxes full of black mana, but not really angry. Saelhen introduces herself, and explains the situation.
Tumblr media
This is a pretty serious situation, but he doesn't panic or get angry. He immediately starts asking his people questions, trying to figure out a new approach to stopping the evil moth necromancer and her zombie army. He's going to put together a powwow of the Ashtray's brains to work out a new strategy.
In the meantime, though, "Sumiko Doe" is welcomed into the Ashtray with open arms. He anoints her forehead with soot, drawing some sort of sign there and then wiping it away, which appears to have no effect.
Tumblr media
Next time: Saelhen continues her infiltration of this extremely-easily-infiltrated anarchist commune, and Looseleaf and Oliver work out Big Necromancy logistics!

Analyzing the Global Methyl Methacrylate Market: Trends, Growth Drivers, and Industry Insights
Tumblr media
Methyl Methacrylate: Properties, Synthesis and Industrial Uses of Methacrylate Chemical Properties Methyl methacrylate, commonly known as MMA, is an organic compound with the formula C5H8O2. It is a colorless, volatile liquid with an acrid odor. MMA is moderately soluble in water but highly soluble in most organic solvents such as alcohol, ether, acetone and dichloromethane. The primary property of MMA is that it undergoes free radical polymerization, which leads to the formation of PMMA. During polymerization, the carbon double bonds in MMA monomers react to form long chains or polymers. This conversion of a low-molecular-weight liquid to a high-molecular-weight solid plastic through polymerization is the reason why MMA finds numerous industrial applications. MMA polymerizes via a free radical mechanism initiated by heat, light or chemicals like peroxides. The polymerization is exothermic and needs to be controlled carefully. During industrial production of PMMA, monomers, polymers and residual reactants must be kept separate to avoid premature or uncontrolled polymerization. Synthesis of MMA Commercially, MMA is produced through the acetone cyanohydrin process, which involves the reaction of acetone and hydrogen cyanide to form acetone cyanohydrin. This intermediate is then reacted with methanol in the presence of an acid catalyst to yield MMA. CH3COCH3 + HCN → CH3C(OH)CN + H2O CH3C(OH)CN + CH3OH → CH2=C(CH3)COOCH3 + H2O The overall reaction involves the replacement of the nitrile group in acetone cyanohydrin by a methoxy carbonyl group through acid-catalyzed esterification. Major process parameters are the selection of acid catalyst, temperature control and recovery of byproducts. MMA can also be synthesized through the methacrylic acid process, which involves the carbonylation of acetylene to methacrylic acid, followed by esterification with methanol. However, the acetone cyanohydrin process is preferred industrially due to lower costs. Industrial Uses of MMA Some of the major industrial applications of MMA and PMMA are: Plexiglas and Optical Materials - PMMA in the form of Plexiglas sheets finds widespread use as an alternative to glass in lighting fixtures, transport equipment, window panes and optical instruments. It offers advantages of lighter weight, thermal insulation and durability. Automotive and Aircraft Industries - MMA is used to manufacture canopies, light covers, glazing panels and translucent roof panels for aircraft, vehicles, trains and boats. PMMA offers crash resistance, high optical clarity and weatherability. Paints and Coatings - MMA or blends of MMA and styrene are used as monomers in paints and coatings for their resistance to solvents, weathering and aging. Applications include automotive finishes and industrial flooring. Adhesives - MMA based adhesives bond plastics, metals, wood, ceramics and composites. They offer high adhesion strengths along with heat, chemical and water resistance. Acrylic Fibers - Polymerization of MMA leads to acrylic fibers used in textiles and apparels. They mimic the feel and appearance of wool but are cheaper and easier to maintain. Medical Devices - PMMA is approved by FDA for applications such as bone cement, breast implants and contact lenses due to its biocompatibility and durability. In summary, methyl methacrylate serves as a vital building block monomer in the synthesis of PMMA, which then finds diverse industrial applications leveraging its outstanding material properties. Strict process control during MMA production and polymerization is needed for safety and maximal output.
