As I went on our yearly autumn hike I took Twig with me, the scenery of the place we went to is just perfect for the little woodface.

It was a quite rainy and foggy day, he doesn't really like to get wet, but he met some mushroom friends and was content to get out again.

Weather with You - a twitter rant about its meaning...

This morning's rant is entitled -  It's not about the weather - please dig a bit deeper before you dismiss Weather with you.

What the song is about is all in the verses so I will largely ignore the chorus which is the only part of the song most people take in.

The first clue is in the opening line - "walking round the room singing Stormy Weather.."- Stormy Weather is a jazz standard done by all the greatest artists about depression brought on by a relationship break up.

"the same room but everything's different" suggests the singer's "blues" aren't the result of a relationship split - depression and mental health problems have many root causes.

"you can find the sleep but not the dream" Insomnia? another horrible symptom of depression, or maybe a reference to the fact that Neil Finn had writer's block and was struggling to produce songs for album 3?

"things ain't cooking in my kitchen.." a straight analogy that things are not right with the singers. "Julius Caesar and the Roman empire couldn't conquer the blue sky" how do you fight an invisible illness - all appears great but it isn't.

But the singer has the answer, a choice - do nothing like the "small boat made of china" or the "lounge room lizard" or recognise you have a problem and try to fight it. The chorus IMHO is a defiant acknowledgement that this is with "me" but I am going to deal with it.

So to me this is a deep song speaking openly about an issue that was taboo back then, like Tim's Dirty Creature from Split Enz day, it uses a common metaphor in the weather to raise an issue many even now don't like to face. On top of that it's a mega earworm with a great video clip.

So my plea is please show some new love for Weather with You - I know many think it is over exposed but maybe try to hear it with different ears and recognise that like 4 seasons in one day - a song about "smiling as the shit goes down" Weather with You is deeper than many might first think.

Foremost, Distant Sun is my all time favourite Crowded House song. I adore the lyrics, especially...

Whenever those lyrics play I always choke up. It is also so special to me as I listened to it when I was flying into Wellington to meet my friend that I met through the Enz fan club. Such a sublime song that carries so much weight.

Unlike the Split Enz ranking, I am pretty set on my order for Crowded House.

Woodface (I adore this album sm. Every song on this album is an A+ for me. She Goes On makes me ugly cry.)

Crowded House debut (so nostalgic. I WAS THINKING OF A PADDED CELL! Eddie Rayner on keyboards <3)

Together Alone (a masterpiece both sonically and lyrically. I was feeling pretty brave til the lights went off!!! Exceptional vibes.)

Temple of Low Men (Systematically stepping on my head! Into Temptation makes me feel strange things.)

Afterglow (I Am in Love is an experience. I'm full of your dreams, I let you sleep with the lights on. ehe. Left Hand is underrated.)

Intriguer (I first got into this album when I went to farewell to the world encore concert in Sydney - they performed Either Side of The World and I instantly fell in love. Falling Dove is another fave.)

Time on Earth (Neil's voice in You Are The One To Make Me Cry <3)

Dreamers Are Waiting (I'm not going to lie, I haven't had the time to properly sit down and listen to this album. I like Bad Times Good and Start of Something.)

!!!!! ok so that post was brought to you by me staring out the window on a long car trip listening to crowded house so please forgive me for rambling here lol. (disclaimer: now before any kiwis say anything we ARE allowed to claim crowded house, you guys can have split enz.)

anyway to save answering this with an entire essay i threw together a quick playlist! just off the top of my head so i'm sure i've made some grievous oversights lol. weirdly enough i never got into nick cave or jimmy barnes though? i was pretty much raised on crowded house and paul kelly, so i had to stop myself from adding half their discographies (but paul kelly's songs from the south compilation album and crowded house's woodface are defs my go-tos. paul kelly is australia's springsteen fr fr).

it starts with mostly pretty classic rock, starting with eagle rock just bc it's kind of ubiquitous lol (one of its claims to fame is inspiring elton john's crocodile rock), then goes into some slightly folksier stuff in the middle, then picks back up again and is capped out with a taste of early australian punk, starting with the saints (who were actually hugely influential to the punk genre, up there with the ramones etc)!

Time And Tide

My favourite song: 'Take a Walk'. Such an underrated song!!! This song reminds of summer holidays and discovering old hobbies again. One of my comfort songs for sure.

My favourite lyric:

Time to slip out my back door Sunrise dancing on my wall Heading down off beaten tracks Try to get that feeling back

Amazing. This reminds me of Australian summers and going for morning walks to feel something.

My least favourite song: Literally none, but I don't listen to 'Small World' as much as the others.

A song that makes me cry: 'Haul Away' and 'Make Sense of It'. These aren't necessarily sad songs, but they both have melancholy qualities that I can't explain? Also 'Dirty Creature' makes me sad because it is about Tim's struggle with anxiety/panic attacks.
