DAY 2. NOON.
Blood splotches decorate the cobblestone floor, already drying into maroon against the wood planks of the train cars. The droplets lighten in shade the deeper into the train you go, and eventually, you find crimson. Pure cherry ink on dark wood. Cherry rots into a blackened smudge once again on the wheel of Olivia’s wheelchair. One hand settled over the thin black rim on her right, and the other twisting a roll of bandages around her fingers. She blinks up at you, bottom lip tucked so tight between her teeth that the rosy flesh is blistering white.
“I’m really sorry,” she sighs, abandoning the spool of cloth in her lap to push up her wiry glasses, “Terribly, I am, but I don’t- “ she pauses, “I’m worried that the others would be… biased in their care…”
Your gaze flits up from Olivia’s pensive face to the blonde man spread across the train’s cushy two-seater. His midsection is wrapped with reddish blooms vining all down the white crossings, arm bound in a sling over his chest. His eyes are scrunched up, brows furrowed towards the middle of his forehead; a fitful, delirious limbo overtaking him. Occasionally, he jerks himself awake in a wide-eyed panic before the pain knocks his brain topside again.
The Bremen lieutenant would hardly be a challenge to put down in his current state. You are one of few from the contestants that Olivia feels can be trusted not to undo her hard work of keeping the soldier alive. Combine your level-headedness with your lackadaisical attitude in searching Prehevil, and you make the perfect candidate to watch over Olivia’s patient.
Unfortunately.
“If he annoys me, can I press on his wounds?”
A wild grimace overtakes Olivia’s face, “No! No, please, please do not do that.”
“Fine,” you waltz past Olivia and study the blonde’s pinched face, “Go, go. I’ll watch the traitor.”
“Thank you!” she sighs in relief before exiting the train car, calling back hurriedly, “I’ll try to come with more bandages before sundown!”
When the lieutenant is not trapped under the rolling, ruthless waves of agony, you could almost mistake him for any other man. Maybe even a handsome one: with a strong nose and symmetrical bone structure. His lips are faintly the color of roses, too. Pale and pink. Dry, though. Not nearly as luscious as pretty petals.
Golden tresses, which you are mature enough to admit are alluring. His hat was off and his hair ruffled and fanning out over the magenta seat. Skin frail and pale - you could crush his ribs if you tried. Charming in a way you’ve only known real men to be.
Certainly, though, as soon as the pig squeals - the illusion of perky flowers and honey will melt away. Scorched by the moon as the villagers outside.
Foolishly, you agree to sit around waiting for the swine to be well enough to squeal. A smarter woman would’ve put it down (especially when it's previously shown a taste for blood), but you like Olivia and her tender heart so you do no such thing.
DAY 2. NIGHT.
As thanks for not murdering Pavel as soon as she’d turned her back, Olivia brought you fresh water and dried meats from scavenged homes alongside the fresh bandages. She left again soon after swapping the bloodied cloth for fresh ones.
“Do tell me when he wakes up,” she grins up at you. As if apologetic for having you carry out a duty you’d already agreed to, “I’m sure this isn’t an easy ask. I’m sorry.”
“If I wanted to make you feel bad for asking, I wouldn’t have said yes,” you wave off the concern, “Don’t die out there, Olivia. I’d miss you too much to do my job,” you gesture vaguely towards the immobile lieutenant.
She chuckles quietly before nodding, “I’ll do my best.”
Pavel’s groans are increasing both in frequency and throatiness - he’ll wake soon, you’re sure of it. He even turns onto his side, exhaling thickly - so harsh and ragged he actually coughs up bubbles of spit. Jittering with alert, he gasps sharply and rockets upward. Snapping at his waist and swiping out wildly with his unbound arm, clawing at the musty air directly in front of him; even attempting to swing out the arm wrapped and tied around his neck.
As soon as the hair-splittingly thin burst of adrenaline fades, he hisses in pain. Cupping the covered gash in his chest before curling his uninjured arm around the other, he throws his head back and gasps again. Suffocating under the re-stretching of closing wounds and fragile muscle.
Despite his uniform, you find yourself at Pavel’s side. You brush a hand down the length of his spine before patting between his shoulder blades, your other hand soothing down his navel to press him down into the cushions. Swiping aside curls of gold, you shush his groaning and search the care bag Olivia left behind. In your palm comes a bind of tobacco and a pipe that is smooth and cold against your skin.
“Quiet, quiet,” you coo, stuffing the chamber of the pipe with the almost sickly sweet, nutty-scented tobacco before raising Pavel’s head and sitting the lip into his mouth.
His eyes are still wrinkled shut, chest beginning to sporadically pop and shrink in a struggle to suck wind through his throat.
Part of you wants to tug his hair and call him stupid, but a larger part of you is consumed with pity. Pity for a creature so entrapped with torment that he cannot remember the second most basic function of his body.
“Breathe through your nose,” you continue to run your fingers through his sweat-matted hair while striking a match against the train’s floorboards and lighting the tobacco, “Smoke slow. It will ease you.”
Pavel’s neck cranes upward and remains there, head pushing against your stroking hand as he (rather noisily) inhales through his nostrils. Then, he fills his lungs with the sting of tobacco, blowing it back out through the pursed corner of his mouth.
Once you’re confident Pavel can breathe and smoke without choking himself to death, you turn again to rattle through Olivia’s care bag for herbs. Anything to aid the physical pain before the distraction of tobacco wears off.
Eyes fluttering open, Pavel stares down at you as he lifts an arm to pull the pipe from his mouth - blowing smoke down into your face. You pinch the exposed skin of his side harshly, only letting go when he jerkily arches his back to escape your cruel fingers.
“Unbelievable,” you shake your head, “No. A Bremen pig would, of course, disrespect someone trying to heal them.”
“If you wanted me dead, I already would be.”
“I still have time.”
You unplug a glass vial the shade of elderberries and press it to Pavel’s closed lips. When he stubbornly fastens his lips tighter, you glare directly into his eyes.
“Open. Or it’s being poured over your neck.”
Pavel groans in protest, but finally opens his mouth and allows you to dump the blue liquid into his throat. He gags at the bitterness of raw, untempered pressed herbs, almost gagging until he realizes you have no intention of stopping your pour. So he chooses to swallow down the vial as quickly as it comes instead of drowning to a mere glass of blue.
When you’re tucking the emptied glass away, Pavel replaces the pipe and huffs down at you, “You’re not a very courteous nurse.”
Instead of dignifying the jab with a response, you sit up fully on your knees to scour over the lieutenant below. From his tousled hair to his bloodied and wretched uniform to his muddied boots.
You reach up and contemplate digging a thumb somewhere in the center of his bandages before thinking better of it and snatching the pipe from his lips, “You should put away your breasts.”
Inhaling the smoke, you blow it down in Pavel’s annoyed face and grin when he coughs.
He glares up at you somehow harsher than before, “I could shoot you for that. I should shoot you for that.”
“Then who would protect you from all the other people that want you dead?”
Silently, he mulls over the question. If he reaches some sort of logical conclusion, he refuses to share. Most likely, though, you’re assuming he has no such answer. Aside from you, there is Olivia, but even she could not be swayed into staying on this train longer than necessary. It could drive one mad, bound inside this narrow tube of car after car after car with the same seats and floorboards and rolling rug. So she very politely requested you to stay behind instead.
You sit down on the hard floor below you, pulling your knees to your chest and winding both arms around your legs. Pavel turns his head to the side, lips in a pout. Drinking the blue liquid earlier has revived them, at least somewhat, they are even pinker. More full. Smoother. When you’ve had enough staring there, you stare at his eyes: so gray they shine like gun metal in the flitting moonlight.
Maybe Pavel would notice you examining him if he could tear his own eyes away from where they’re lingering by the sliver of exposed skin by your ankle. Classic: boarish pig lives up to his name. His gaze crawls up your shin to your bent knees, then a little lower as if to catch a glimpse of where your thighs and rear are squished against your chest and the floor (respectively). At least you have the decency to not objectify him during your observation - not that you even could. The lieutenant is leagues more off-putting than handsome.
Once he’s gathered the guts to bore his steely gaze into your face, he grins with a half-hearted shrug, “I haven’t seen a beautiful woman not kissing the piss lord’s ass in ages.”
You ignore the pass completely, “So, the temple square?”
Pavel sighs and extends a hand, palm up and fingers splayed wide in front of your face, “A failure.”
“You don’t say,” you bypass his hand and feed the lip of the pipe directly into his mouth, pressing it against his tongue and watching him firmly tuck it between his lips before letting go, “Why try?”
Puffing from the pipe, Pavel only shakes his head while exhaling thick plumes of slate-hued smoke. He swipes his tongue over his bottom lip and cradles the pipe in his hand, turning it delicately to inspect the body, “Why not?”
You make a show of looking from his face to his bandaged torso before snickering, “Serious question?”
Pavel takes one final draw of the pipe before balancing it atop the wooden frame of the seat. He lays his uninjured hand gently over his torso, blinking up at the ceiling with tired, wet eyes.
“You are cruel, you know this?”
“It’s a good defense,” you grin at the man innocently, “Especially against brutalist pigwhores.”
“Targeted,” again, he pouts, “Mean. You are a mean girl.”
“Maybe that’s what you need. I think Mama was too nice to you.”
Pavel withholds the wince at your words, merely pressing his tongue to the roof of his mouth and inhaling through his nose sharply. He shrugs when he really wants to bite, “You think so?”
Hopefully, he muses, he can rip out your throat when he finally snaps back.
“I do.”
“You know what I think?” you merely fold your arms, so he continues, “Nobody put the spoiled girl in her place. Now she’s a confident woman full of hot air,” he smiles, “I don’t do well with confident women like that. Make me jumpy.”
You ‘hmph’, but respond with nothing new before rising from the floor and snatching the care bag to squeeze against your chest like a child would their stuffed bear. Laying across the unoccupied, opposite seat, you turn so that you're faced away from the lieutenant.
Pavel stares at your back. He hadn’t been entirely teasing earlier - he truly hadn’t found a woman beautiful in a long while. Not that it was a problem to admit a girl was pretty, but there was always some dull ache to accompany the thought. Women riveted by his status in the Bremen army disgusted him, and women disgusted by him and his status were usually unwilling to bend to his charms. Even then, if he met a woman who was nurturing and sweet, undeterred by his enlistment, he was consumed with revenge.
Now that he’s officially gone and tried and horrendously failed, he can at least swim in the delusion that there is a chance for romance. Besides, he is in his thirties, that’s about the time when people begin settling down, right?
He reaches up for the pipe but finds that it’s gone out. No more vermillion embers to offer comfort.
“Oi,” he calls into the night. Not even crickets sing back. He shifts as if to sit up, but his entire waist flares with pain and sends him crashing back into the velvet cushions. So, he settles on raising his voice, “Hey!”
“Sleep, pig.”
“Pav.”
“Hm?”
“My name. My name is Pav,” he considers throwing the pipe at you altogether, but if the gold-encrusted bowl actually hits your skull then you’d likely leave and never return, “Call me by it.”
“Why should I?” you twist, scowling over your shoulder, “You signed up for the Bremen army, now take what comes with that in Prehevil.”
“You don’t strike me as a dull girl,” he grumbles, “So don’t pretend to be one.”
Suddenly, you’re sitting up again, the bag still clenched between both of your arms, “Do you know what the Bremen army has done to people? Has done to me?” you spit on the floor, right below where Pav rests, “Pigs! Horrible, wretched, rotten pigs!”
Pavel allows you to scream, allows you to finish, before returning, “Do you know what the Bremen army has done to me?”
He’s so quiet, he’s downright whispering. Voice husky and layered with years of buried terror and bloodlust.
“How should I care? You enlisted! Whatever they made you- !”
Now he cuts you off.
“They razed my home during the First Great War,” that once blinding sheen in gunmetal eyes is dark like obsidian, “My family. My mama,” he mocks you, “Dead. I joined to kill the Kaiser, I never wanted to be a Bremen pig. I never asked for this.”
“You came to kill the Kaiser as a lieutenant?”
“I did.”
“You must’ve known…” you swallow your words. A lieutenant to kill the commander? Even without the Kaiser’s other soldiers, Pavel wouldn’t possibly have been able to do that and get away with it. Not unless he wanted to hide out in Prehevil for the rest of his days.
“At least I will never die knowing I didn’t try,” he cackles sickly, “Great leader Kaiser spat the bullet out like it was nothing… Maybe he is some God sent back to torture us.”
“Maybe you missed,” you slump forward, elbows digging into your knees, “Couldn’t that be more likely?”
“No,” he looks at you with widened eyes, “No, no,” he shakes his head, “I don’t miss my shots.”
“If you’re sure,” you smile suddenly, shaking loose the stiffness in Pavel’s shoulders, “When you’re healed, we can try again, hm?”
“Really?” he’s shocked by the madness of your suggestion, “Did you miss the part where I said he took a bullet to the head and walked it off?”
“Apparently, we’ll die here anyway,” you shrug, yawning and fluttering back down onto the seat, “So, why not try again, Pav?”
A girl that nurtures despite his bloody uniform, and now despite his terrible need for revenge. You are as cruel as you are doting. Fiery and unfair and oh, he thinks he wants you to card your fingers in his hair again. Gentle only to him.
“As long as you don’t abandon me once you see for yourself,” Pavel can feel less burning in his chest when he breathes now, “Spat the bullet right out, I tell you.”
You shrug, “I guess I’ll die one way or another here.”
Pavel shakes his head, not bothering to tilt his head away from you as he drifts off.
DAY 3. MORNING.
He awakes to a great pressure around his throat. Snapping into consciousness, he finds you standing over him with shaking arms, and when he’s brave enough to follow the branches to where they’re stemmed - your hands are around his neck. Your breathing is shaky, and there’s wetness reflecting off your cheeks. Pavel claws at your wrists with his hand, twisting his body so his bottom half is hanging off the seat. Ignoring the scorching rage that sears over the fresh gash in his stomach, Pavel kicks out at you. His heeled boots dig into your gut, squishing intestines and fat and blood as he pushes you away.
Loudly, his boots thunk back against the floorboard when you’ve fallen away, throwing yourself dramatically across the opposite seat. Like a sick Europian lady from the Gilded Age, you drape over the frame with sniveling wails.
Pavel skims his fingers over where your own were clamping his throat shut as he shudders for breath. Ignoring your sobs, he shouts, “Did you hit your head or what?! Heal me, talk to me, just to end my life?! Are you- ?!”
“Enough!” you scream, voice snapping raw in the middle, completely fizzled out at the end. Wiping at the ceaseless tears gushing over your face, you scream again, “She should’ve gotten out of here! She should’ve gotten out and ran instead of… Instead of…” you cough out phlegm and despair trapped in your throat, “Instead of…”
Marina’s downcast face, moles decorating her frown as she twisted a cracked pair of Windsor glasses between her hands. She could barely look at you when she said it before handing over the glasses. I’m sorry, Marina whispered, Olivia… I just thought, maybe, you should know…
Pavel remains as he is, lumped against the back of the seat with both legs dangling onto the floor. Dried blood scraped up under his heels. He heaves for breath, watching as you cradle yourself in your arms and rock. You wither before him, babbling and wheezing and shrouded in shadow.
“What are you going on about?”
“Be quiet,” you snap, louring through puffy, red eyes and wobbly lips, “Be mournful. The woman that saved your life has died,” before Pavel can squeeze anything out from his gaping mouth, you stand and point down at him to command again, “Be nice. The war is over, and you’re not even a real lieutenant, you can show kindness when a person has died.”
He shuts his mouth. Opens it again. Shuts it. Then, finally,
“I didn’t know her.”
From the way you cross your arms and turn away, he can gather that that was the wrong thing to say.
“And yet she saved you,” your arms tighten around yourself, “She saved you, Pav… Be nice.”
You’re a sweet thing, Pavel thinks. You clearly hate him for not displaying the tenderness that you are around the woman’s death. At least at this moment, you hate him.
“I’m taking a walk,” you announce, flinging open the cabin door and slamming it behind you.
Pavel contemplates calling after you, but figures the sound of his voice could only make you stay away longer.
You’re a cruel, sweet thing.
Not even leaving the care bag closer for him to reach in and take from.
DAY 3. NOON.
When you return, the train car is silent sans the gentle hum of Pavel’s breathing. Almost reminiscent of clockwork, a well-oiled machine, his broad chest rises and falls smoothly as he’s rearranged himself sideways on the seat. With his slung arm over his chest and spare one tucked under his head as a makeshift pillow.
Having Pavel stretched out before you gives ample time for you to more thoroughly judge his physique - if you’d be able to strangle him while he’s awake. If he could fight back. If he could lift you with his pure muscle and restrain you with a single hand while the other…
Maybe, you think.
His arms are large, but not obnoxiously terrifying like the boxer. His waist is slim despite the broadness of his shoulders and chest.
Suddenly, he groans, nose twitching in his slumber. It draws your gaze up to his face. That unsettlingly symmetrical face with the strong nose bridge and soft, rosy lips.
Not to mention his flaxen hair - curled and tousled and forcefully in your sights with that Bremen hat off. And with his Bremen uniform (seemingly always) unbuttoned to his stomach, you make out his pectorals past his bandages. You make out two indentations over his heart: silvery scars.
He could almost be handsome. If he were more emotionally attuned.
You kneel by his side, swinging the care bag across the aisle and into your lap. His bleeding has visibly lessened, as only the lightest shade of pink has spread over the pale cloth. Sneaking scissors up by his soft skin, you avoid slicing him as you snip the bandages and begin unwinding them. Pulling gently so as to avoid waking the man, you successfully clear him from the restrictive cloth and assess his healing wound.
More coral pink than crimson red, now. You assume the mass improvement is thanks to the blue vial Olivia had provided. Even as the gnarly cut expands under Pavel’s breathing, it fails to start bleeding again. Which you’re grateful for since, as a precarious glance into the bag confirms, you have freshly run out of bandages. And you fear that snagging any old cloth from any old barrel could give Pavel an infection.
“What was it Alll-mer said? Pluck out your eyes if you cannot respect modesty?”
“I’m checking your wound,” you pinch his side. The skin is warm and fleshy and so, so soft between your fingertips. He whimpers and tries to evade your hand by squirming higher on the seat, “When did you wake up?”
“Not long ago,” he watches you reach into the bag and pull free another glass vial of blue liquid, “Only to see you ogling my body.”
“It’s a hideous one. Hard to look away.”
“You love to lie, mean girl?” he ‘tsk’s, “Shame. Lies are so ugly from a pretty mouth.”
“As if you would know.”
“Confident woman,” he sings to himself, grinning, “Confident, confident woman.”
Shoving the blue vial towards Pavel’s face, you square your shoulders and settle your face sternly, “Drink.”
“I liked it when you did it for me,” he opens his mouth then, refusing to break eye contact.
You comply, shifting onto your knees and pressing the chilled glass against Pavel’s lower lip; tipping it to flow into his warm mouth. He gulps down what you graciously offer, bringing his uninjured arm out from under his head and settling it over your hand around the vial. His thumb presses against your knuckles. You tangle your other hand into his hair and let the golden curls thread over your fingers. Once the vial is finished, you can’t explain it but there’s a sudden thundering in your chest. So vivid and hard in your ribs that it makes you nauseous.
Pavel blinks, lashes fluttering at you as his hand remains over yours.
Sunshine slants across his face. You see him more clearly now than this morning or last night or when he was wrought and warped with pain.
He looks pretty like this. Foul-mouthed and promiscuous and even forthright rude, but undoubtedly pretty.
His hand moves to your cheek, tenderly cupping the flesh with glass still pressed to his lips.
The thunder comes with lightning that strikes blazing fire. Heat fans through your chest and up to your forehead.
“If you want to go after the Kaiser, you should rest,” you whisper, as if speaking any louder could shatter the both of you from this moment, “We both should. Best to gather our strength before searching for him.”
Pavel shakes his head, obsessively smoothing the pad of his thumb over the apple of your cheek, “He will gut us both, cruel girl. I don’t want to see that for you. If I find him it’s alone,” he swallows thickly, “And I’m tired.”
“So,” you realize with a startled tremble that your internal combustion is affection for the former lieutenant, “you’ll stay?”
And with greater terror, you realize that you actually want to stay with him.
“I will die knowing I failed,” he sucks in a sharp breath, pressing his lips firmly before granting you sight of the rosy flesh again, “but I will have you to die with, cruel girl.”
At least even in humiliating defeat, Pavel can be loved.
“Are you scared to die, Pav?”
You’re a sweet one, he fondly recalls. Assuming he had much to live for outside his schlocky revenge scheme.
“Projecting, hm?”
You pinch his side. He lets you.
DAY 3. NIGHT.
“Now, bend it.”
Pavel hisses but manages to fully extend and curl his newly unwound arm with nothing more than a click in his elbow. He lays both hands in his lap as you bunch the bandages and sling into a ball and lay it off to the side.
“Good,” you utter softly, “You’ve healed a lot faster than I would’ve thought.”
“Right?” Pavel turns his head to stare down at you, tilting his head back, “You should sit with me.”
“You’re feeling charitable,” he scoffs at your tease, not moving to accommodate his invite, “Where should I even sit, then? You’re taking the entire seat.”
When he merely smirks, you get the idea.
“You’re gross.”
“Indulge me, cruel girl,” you rise to your feet, gnawing your bottom lip in contemplation, Pavel leans against the armrest and cinches his legs together, “Would you make a man die alone?”
“Yes,” you answer without hesitation.
But would you make Pavel die alone?
You swing a leg over his torso, careful to avoid the healing slash and straddle Pavel’s waist with both hands landing over his exposed chest. He cups your cheek again, now taking pleasure (and slight pain) in cradling your face with both hands. He hasn’t gotten to see a beautiful woman in ages, and he thinks maybe it isn’t so bad to go out staring at one.
Moonlight cascades over the both of you, so bright in the train cabin it almost burns.
“If we could still run, where would you go?” you ask.
“Where would you want me?”
“Flirt,” you’re leaning in, though, trailing a finger over his scarred chest. Your nails bite at the flesh, he grunts in disapproval, “How can I believe anything you say? You betrayed your leader. Would you shoot me, too?”
Pavel is sure you’re anything but serious in asking, but it's dangerous the way he feels compelled to answer genuinely, “Never. I’d miss your… What was it? Brutalism?”
“Enough,” the moonlight sears over where Pavel’s hands are curved around your cheeks. You lean down more until your lips brush his, “You call me rude, but you’re- “
He slices your derision short, pressing his petal soft lips against yours with a quiet, contented sigh.
Moonlight bares witness. And you cannot pull away even as the fire in your heart rages from affection to molten lava. You’re not even entirely sure you would want to.
Karin cannot feel her fingers as she stands in the open train car door. She’s seen many things - many terrible, awful things. Especially so in the past seventy-two hours than her entire career as a war journalist, but this may be what truly drives her mad. She can feel it - the need to retreat inside her mind and shut down completely; the need to give up hope of salvation. Maybe she can suppress it long enough to sit by that seashore, get a good view to wash out the image before her.
Wriggling on the train loveseat is a fleshy creature, almost like mushed peaches. Occasionally, pleased sighs and hums will escape one of its two smiling faces as the lumps slide and shift along the cushion. One face nuzzles closer to the other and the measly bread and meat Karin swiped from deserted kitchens lurches in her stomach.
None of the other monsters she’d encountered had been so undeniable in its previous humanity. It reminds her of the holed, broken, pliant corpses of uniformed soldiers dead in trenches, and it reminds her of the first time she ever saw a real dead body. She puked on its boot, unable to run back and spew bile elsewhere before it was spurting past her lips.
Karin’s stomach is stronger now, though. She has the time to turn and trudge on wobbly knees towards the seaside before she pukes - squirming flesh and smoldered limbs tangling in her mind.
Moonlight burns at the back of her neck as The Lovers moan and coo happily behind her.

"What you're not getting, Matt, is this has nothing to do with Greg Granger. It doesn't even have to do with me. It has to do with the fact that you're still in love with Dawson."
Matt Casey looked back at me wide-eyed; his expression held a storminess to it, the look of a deer caught in headlights. It's not cute or funny; the brutal truth never is when you break it down to its rawness. Deer are skittish, withdrawn animals, antisocial for fear of getting hurt; deer struggle to settle into one place for too long.
Deeply insecure but in a sweet coquettish nature, a deer's life is spent searching for venture traveling most of their lives in the pursuit of a balanced life, one that includes stability and prey and emotional fulfillment. They love to watch and are pros at the art of observance. They know their land every nook and cranny shy creatures as they hide in the elements of nature in the day and come out to explore and play at night.
Nimble yet beautiful creatures they are harmless to people, never confident enough for fear of rejection or being hurt. Being so cautious and skittish, however, can be dangerous, especially in the middle of the night when they are simply playing or following their families across the land; they are often caught off guard when a car comes speeding towards them suddenly they are caught in a situation beyond control they freeze hence the saying caught in headlights.
In those moments, the truth races through their minds they are going to die unless they act fast, most can not; it's simply not in their nature to fight, so used to being the prey they accept it's their fate to die; some have a rare ability to think fast and fight for their lives.
Most freeze.
"I called you out, and you haven't done anything about it. Maybe you should reach out and resolve that so you can go back to being the Matt Casey everyone around here looks up to, not this version."
It's been two weeks since I called Matt out on his refusal to acknowledge his feelings for his ex-wife and his slothful enervate undertaking of his feelings towards his so-called feelings to me.
"My feelings for you are real, Sylvie."
"I want you to know; I really appreciated you saying what you did last shift. You were right; thank you for helping me get my head straight."
Past conversations with Matt burn inside my head as I try to focus on the game I am in; I'm bent down into an athletic position with hands on my knees, ready for play to begin again. I can see Kelly Severide bouncing the basketball down the court. I know I need to focus; Kelly choose Leslie Shay and me to be on his team, and he's a beast on the court; he takes his game seriously. I don't want to look stupid or inexperienced; but I can't seem to get Matt and his words out of my head or my conversation with Stella Kidd.
"I basically just told Casey I'm in love with him."
"You know what? There's no need to panic here, okay. What is so wrong with him knowing how you feel? That is how you feel, right?
"I… I can't feel that way.
"Why not?"
"I just… I just can't. Trust me. I'm just going to pretend I didn't say what I said, and then everything can go back to normal."
"Is that really the healthiest?"
Shake your damn head out, Brett, focus. You need to be focused; you should be up there helping Kelly. Run Brett race towards Kelly, get Matt out of your damn head. My feet listen, forcing me to sprint towards where Kelly and Matt are fighting for dominance over the basketball, which is nothing more than an orange and black blur to my vision. No matter how fast I run, though, I can't escape the voices of my past.
"Hey, I just wanted to tell you, Brett. I'm delighted you're okay."
"It's just the craziest thing climbing out of there and seeing you. How'd you get there so fast?"
"Well, it wasn't just me. We all responded quick, rushed down there together."
"Hmm, funny, I didn't see anyone else at first."
"Yeah, they were there."
"It's always been you. Uh, I just mean, you're always the one who's there for me in a crisis. That's all I mean. I guess I'm just trying to thank you for being such a good friend."
"I don't regret kissing you, Brett."
If those words are all true, why is it taking Matt so damn long to fight for me? All I want is for a guy to love me enough to fight for me to make me his entire world. I'm not clingy or possessive; I don't need him stapled to my hip twenty-four-seven. I want to know that I am the only one whose scent is filling his nostrils. I want my delicate skin to linger on his fingertips the way a slow song is forever dancing on the tips of our memories.
Is it too much to ask? Am I not worthy of a guy to waste his time on? I feel as if I am drowning in an ocean of emotions. I spend so much time on my knees praying for the wisdom to see through this storm some days.
I lose my breath.

April 4th 1617 saw the death of John Napier, the mathematician.
Best known as the inventor of logarithms Napier is also credited to have made the use of the decimal point in arithmetic and mathematics common. In addition to mathematics, he also had deep interests in astronomy and religion. Napier was born at Merchiston Castle in Edinburgh, which is now in the middle the campus bearing his name of Napier University.
Not much is known about his early life except for the fact that he was the son of a Scottish landowner and official and received a privileged upbringing. As a member of the nobility, he was tutored privately at home for a few years before being sent to St Salvator's College, St Andrews. It was here that he first became deeply interested in theology though he did not acquire in-depth knowledge in mathematics until later.
For reasons unknown, he left the college before earning his degree and it is believed that he moved to some other educational institute for his higher studies. Eventually he began managing his estates and pursued mathematics as a hobby. Among his several contributions to the field, his invention of logarithms is regarded as his greatest.
In 1614 he wrote Mirifici Logarithmorum Canonis Descriptio which contained 90 pages of tables of natural logarithms and also contained theorems in spherical trigonometry known as Napier's Rules of Circular Parts.
Now I can appreciate why these things are necessary in science etc  I have to say, I hate maths, don't mistake that with arithmetic, as I am quite adept at counting, the times table and division etc, trigonometry, algebra, logarithms can quite simple GTF.
Our archives at The National Library of Scotland has the original copies of Napiers memoirs, I will give you an example of his work;
L w~^ i/i*<<y*» & -^ '(^»^i<: ,/^V D< '£ Vo6^k -i—, '.t/<C 1 iU'\,^M,«rT ^Wmfcw ^^.*v- zr fi* y$£/& OtvOT" nd- 6«X*Hv fast t^^^mP^^n& JsX f-K-V- y*$P \>>r~4/-Av-~oA tvc) ^<5~"
I mean come on, what kind of sorcery is this?
Which leads me to the final party of this post, John Napier was seen as a devoted and deeply religious family man, but in fact several members of John Napier’s family – respected and wealthy  participants of Edinburgh society - were commonly known to be wizards or  sorcerers. Their necromantic power was feared by nobles as well as  peasants from far and wide.
This was at a time when James VI was actively attending and persecuting many poor people, mainly women, putting them to death after days and weeks of torture, had Napiers family not been landed gentry, they would have been the ideal candidates for these actions, money eh, changes everything.
Was John Napier involved in this? Well there is no proof of it, he was however a free thinker and thought outside the box, a very clever man, two examples of this here, initially caused the witchcraft tag to be be placed on him......
Rumours spread that he was a warlock after he enlisted the help of the  cockeral to discover which if his servants had been stealing from him. Each servant was ordered to go into a darkened room and stroke the cockeral - the bird would crow, said Napier, when the guilty servant touched it.
The bird remained silent but Napier stunned the household by immediately identifying the culprit. Surely this was sorcery. But all he had done was put soot on the cockerel's feathers - the innocent servants all had black on their hands, while the guilty one's were clean because he was afraid to touch the bird.
At Merchiston, when pigeons belonging to a neighbouring landowner had been eating Napier's grain, he threatened to restrain them. 'Do so, if you can catch them,' scoffed his neighbour. Next morning, Napier's servants could be seen stuffing hundreds of semi-conscious pigeons into sacks. Onlookers were convinced Napier had bewitched them - in fact he had simply scattered succulent peas soaked in wine to get the birds drunk and incapable.
But before his death Napier had left full details of how his logarithms had been calculated, and had left one final invention as a boon to the merchant classes. Napier's Rods, or Napier's Bones as they were called from the material they were made of, were in effect a powerful "pocket calculator", as seen in the second pic.
Napier was twice married; first, in 1571, to Elizabeth, daughter of Sir James Stirling of Keir, by whom he had a son and a daughter; secondly, to Agnes, daughter of James Chisholm of Cromlix, by whom he had ten children. His eldest son, Archibald, who succeeded him, was raised to the rank of a baron by Charles I., in 1627, under the title of lord Napier, which is still borne by his descendants. A very elaborate life of him was published in 1835.
The third pic is Napier family memorial tablet at St. Giles, Edinburgh, although the memorial is said to have been moved from it's original position on the Kirk.
You can read more of the sorcery claims here https://www.scotsman.com/whats-on/arts-and-entertainment/napiers-wizard-roots-2463821

P&P Picks of the Week
Looks like summer decided to stick around for a while longer, and this would be a perfect time to find a bench, a spot by the river, or just bring a blanket to the park and enjoy some time in the sun with a good book by your side. Our booksellers made sure you have a good selection, and just in time—when you’re done with a book you can meet some of the authors we’re hosting at two of our locations. This week choose between a music memoir, a history on piracy off the American coast, a collection of short stories, a novel, and a graphic novel. Enjoy the weather and some good reads!
Night Moves - Jessica Hopper
Upcoming Event Monday, October 8, 2018 - 7 p.m. at 5015 Connecticut Ave
Tumblr media
As a longtime fan of Jessica Hopper’s vigilant, fearless music criticism, Night Moves is the book I’ve been pining for. A series of vignettes about her coming of age in the Chicago music scene, the pieces are as shaky with youth as a Ferlinghetti poem, and they come together to form one jagged love poem to a city and a way of life. There’s something markedly elegiac about the life Hopper describes, a roiling, breathing cityscape where the escape from the robotic crawl of gentrification seemed still possible. Can young adults still live like this in a city? Riding bikes through electric summer nights? God, I hope so. Night Moves made me feel very young and very old at the same time: a painful, singular elation. Liz H.
Black Flags, Blue Waters - Eric Jay Dolin
Upcoming Event Thursday, October 11, 2018 - 7 p.m. at Politics and Prose at the Wharf
Tumblr media
You may be thinking you’ll want to read this book with a ‘Yo Ho Ho! And a Bottle of Rum, for it’s a Pirate’s Life for Me!’ But you’ll reconsider after reading this epic retelling of the Golden Age of American piracy in the late 1600’s and early 1700’s. Black Flags, Blue Waters is a definitive history on piracy off the American coast, as well as by Americans over in the Indian Ocean. Filled with colorful biographies of all the famous pirates, such as Captain Kidd and Blackbeard, this book also examines the social, political and economic reasons so many men turned to piracy in those days. This is a fascinating look at how piracy was encouraged by many Americans, so long as it didn’t affect their pockets, and how the tide then turned against the buccaneers after a prolonged government campaign and crackdown. You’ll never look at Captain Jack Sparrow the same way again. Keith V.
Your Duck is My Duck - Deborah Eisenberg
Tumblr media
With her first new collection in 12 years Your Duck is My Duck, Eisenberg gives us a true, funny, and troubling picture of our world. “Merge” is an indelible close-up of the 1%, focusing on the son of a corporate despot who’s been cut off but gamely follows in dad’s footsteps with impressive displays of self-justification. In the title story art strikes back with a puppeteer’s “simple moral fable” of a grasping monarch oblivious to the fact that “the serfs and donkeys are already inflamed with rage.” Sure enough, the island explodes. In the magnificent “The Third Tower,” a woman prone to spells of “words heating up, expanding, exploding into pictures of things,” is sent to a hospital/prison. Her bad case of imagination can be cured if she learns cooperation. Laurie G.
A Kind of Freedom - Margaret Wilkerson Sexton
Tumblr media
A Kind of Freedom, multi generational story focuses on three generations of family members that come from the first black doctor in Louisiana. We are introduced to Evelyn, her daughter Jaclyn, and Jaclyn’s son, T.C. who all have to find their own kind of freedom. Much changes over the years while other things stay much the same. Some of the topics brought up in this novel include class, colorism, and the toll drugs and addiction can take on one family. Morgan H.
Home After Dark - David Small
Tumblr media
Few can blend lines and words into heartfelt storytelling like David Small. In his latest work Home After Dark readers follow thirteen year old Russell Pruitt as he grows up in the 1950s. Abandoned by his mother, Russell is forced to live with his emotionally abusive father. His circumstances only deteriorate from there for this isn’t a story of a teenager boldly overcoming life’s obstacles. This is a tale of a boy struggling to tread the murky waters of an uncertain and tragic adolescence. Beautifully rendered, masterfully told, this is a book you won’t be able to resist reading when you’re home after dark. Michael T.

Book Of Genesis - From The Latin Vulgate - Chapter 15
INTRODUCTION.
The Hebrews now entitle all the Five Books of Moses, from the initial words, which originally were written like one continued word or verse; but the Sept. have preferred to give the titles the most memorable occurrences of each work. On this occasion, the Creation of all things out of nothing, strikes us with peculiar force. We find a refutation of all the heathenish mythology, and of the world’s eternity, which Aristotle endeavoured to establish. We behold the short reign of innocence, and the origin of sin and misery, the dispersion of nations, and the providence of God watching over his chosen people, till the death of Joseph, about the year 2369 (Usher) 2399 (Sal. and Tirin) B.C. 1631. We shall witness the same care in the other Books of Scripture, and adore his wisdom and goodness in preserving to himself faithful witnesses, and a true Holy Catholic Church, in all ages, even when the greatest corruption seemed to overspread the land. H.
—————————-
This Book is so called from its treating of the Generation, that is, of the Creation and the beginning of the world. The Hebrews call it Bereshith, from the word with which it begins. It contains not only the History of the Creation of the World, but also an account of its progress during the space of 2369 years, that is, until the death of Joseph.
The additional Notes in this Edition of the New Testament will be marked with the letter A. Such as are taken from various Interpreters and Commentators, will be marked as in the Old Testament. B. Bristow, C. Calmet, Ch. Challoner, D. Du Hamel, E. Estius, J. Jansenius, M. Menochius, Po. Polus, P. Pastorini, T. Tirinus, V. Bible de Vence, W. Worthington, Wi. Witham. — The names of other authors, who may be occasionally consulted, will be given at full length.
Verses are in English and Latin. HAYDOCK CATHOLIC BIBLE COMMENTARY
This Catholic commentary on the Old Testament, following the Douay-Rheims Bible text, was originally compiled by Catholic priest and biblical scholar Rev. George Leo Haydock (1774-1849). This transcription is based on Haydock’s notes as they appear in the 1859 edition of Haydock’s Catholic Family Bible and Commentary printed by Edward Dunigan and Brother, New York, New York.
TRANSCRIBER’S NOTES
Changes made to the original text for this transcription include the following:
Greek letters. The original text sometimes includes Greek expressions spelled out in Greek letters. In this transcription, those expressions have been transliterated from Greek letters to English letters, put in italics, and underlined. The following substitution scheme has been used: A for Alpha; B for Beta; G for Gamma; D for Delta; E for Epsilon; Z for Zeta; E for Eta; Th for Theta; I for Iota; K for Kappa; L for Lamda; M for Mu; N for Nu; X for Xi; O for Omicron; P for Pi; R for Rho; S for Sigma; T for Tau; U for Upsilon; Ph for Phi; Ch for Chi; Ps for Psi; O for Omega. For example, where the name, Jesus, is spelled out in the original text in Greek letters, Iota-eta-sigma-omicron-upsilon-sigma, it is transliterated in this transcription as, Iesous. Greek diacritical marks have not been represented in this transcription.
Footnotes. The original text indicates footnotes with special characters, including the astrisk (*) and printers’ marks, such as the dagger mark, the double dagger mark, the section mark, the parallels mark, and the paragraph mark. In this transcription all these special characters have been replaced by numbers in square brackets, such as [1], [2], [3], etc.
Accent marks. The original text contains some English letters represented with accent marks. In this transcription, those letters have been rendered in this transcription without their accent marks.
Other special characters.
Solid horizontal lines of various lengths that appear in the original text have been represented as a series of consecutive hyphens of approximately the same length, such as .
Ligatures, single characters containing two letters united, in the original text in some Latin expressions have been represented in this transcription as separate letters. The ligature formed by uniting A and E is represented as Ae, that of a and e as ae, that of O and E as Oe, and that of o and e as oe.
Monetary sums in the original text represented with a preceding British pound sterling symbol (a stylized L, transected by a short horizontal line) are represented in this transcription with a following pound symbol, l.
The half symbol (½) and three-quarters symbol (¾) in the original text have been represented in this transcription with their decimal equivalent, (.5) and (.75) respectively.
Unreadable text. Places where the transcriber’s copy of the original text is unreadable have been indicated in this transcription by an empty set of square brackets, [].
Chapter 15
God promiseth seed to Abram. His faith, sacrifice and vision.
[1] Now when these things were done, the word of the Lord came to Abram by a vision, saying: Fear not, Abram, I am thy protector, and thy reward exceeding great. His itaque transactis, factus est sermo Domini ad Abram per visionem dicens : Noli timere, Abram : ego protector tuus sum, et merces tua magna nimis.
[2] And Abram said: Lord God, what wilt thou give me? I shall go without children: and the son of the steward of my house is this Damascus Eliezer. Dixitque Abram : Domine Deus, quid dabis mihi? ego vadam absque liberis, et filius procuratoris domus meae iste Damascus Eliezer.
[3] And Abram added: But to me thou hast not given seed: and lo my servant, born in my house, shall be my heir. Addiditque Abram : Mihi autem non dedisti semen, et ecce vernaculus meus, haeres meus erit.
[4] And immediately the word of the Lord came to him, saying: He shall not be thy heir: but he that shall come out of thy bowels, him shalt thou have for thy heir. Statimque sermo Domini factus est ad eum, dicens : Non erit hic haeres tuus, sed qui egredietur de utero tuo, ipsum habebis haeredem.
[5] And he brought him forth abroad, and said to him: Look up to heaven and number the stars, if thou canst. And he said to him: So shall thy seed be. Eduxitque eum foras, et ait illi : Suscipe caelum, et numera stellas, si potes. Et dixit ei : Sic erit semen tuum.
[6] Abram believed God, and it was reputed to him unto justice. Credidit Abram Deo, et reputatum est illi ad justitiam.
[7] And he said to him: I am the Lord who brought thee out from Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land, and that thou mightest possess it. Dixitque ad eum : Ego Dominus qui eduxi te de Ur Chaldaeorum ut darem tibi terram istam, et possideres eam.
[8] But he said: Lord God, whereby may I know that I shall possess it? At ille ait : Domine Deus, unde scire possum quod possessurus sim eam?
[9] And the Lord answered, and said: Take me a cow of three years old, and a she goat of three years, and a ram of three years, a turtle also, and a pigeon. Et respondens Dominus : Sume, inquit, mihi vaccam trienem, et capram trimam, et arietem annorum trium, turturem quoque et columbam.
[10] And he took all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid the two pieces of each one against the other; but the birds he divided not. Qui tollens universa haec, divisit ea per medium, et utrasque partes contra se altrinsecus posuit; aves autem non divisit.
[11] And the fowls came down upon the carcasses, and Abram drove them away. Descenderuntque volucres super cadavera, et abigebat eas Abram.
[12] And when the sun was setting, a deep sleep fell upon Abram, and a great and darksome horror seized upon him. Cumque sol occumberet, sopor irruit super Abram, et horror magnus et tenebrosus invasit eum.
[13] And it was said unto him: Know thou beforehand that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land not their own, and they shall bring them under bondage, and afflict them four hundred years. Dictumque est ad eum : Scito praenoscens quod peregrinum futurum sit semen tuum in terra non sua, et subjicient eos servituti, et affligent quadringentis annis.
[14] But I will judge the nation which they shall serve, and after this they shall come out with great substance. Verumtamen gentem, cui servituri sunt, ego judicabo : et post haec egredientur cum magna substantia.
[15] And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace, and be buried in a good old age. Tu autem ibis ad patres tuos in pace, sepultus in senectute bona.
[16] But in the fourth generation they shall return hither: for as yet the iniquities of the Amorrhites are not at the full until this present time. Generatione autem quarta revertentur huc : necdum enim completae sunt iniquitates Amorrhaeorum usque ad praesens tempus.
[17] And when the sun was set, there arose a dark mist, and there appeared a smoking furnace and a lamp of fire passing between those divisions. Cum ergo occubuisset sol, facta est caligo tenebrosa, et apparuit clibanus fumans, et lampas ignis transiens inter divisiones illas.
[18] That day God made a covenant with Abram, saying: To thy seed will I give this land, from the river of Egypt even to the great river Euphrates. In illo die pepigit Dominus foedus cum Abram, dicens : Semini tuo dabo terram hanc a fluvio Aegypti usque ad fluvium magnum Euphraten,
[19] The Cineans and Cenezites, the Cedmonites, Cinaeos, et Cenezaeos, Cedmonaeos,
[20] And the Hethites, and the Pherezites, the Raphaim also, et Hethaeos, et Pherezaeos, Raphaim quoque,
[21] And the Amorrhites, and the Chanaanites, and the Gergesites, and the Jebusites. et Amorrhaeos, et Chananaeos, et Gergesaeos, et Jebusaeos.
Commentary:
Ver. 1. Fear not. He might naturally be under some apprehensions, lest the four kings should attempt to be revenged upon him. --- Reward, since thou hast so generously despised earthly riches. H. --- Abram was not asleep, but saw a vision of exterior objects. v. 5.
Ver. 2. I shall go. To what purpose should I heap up riches, since I have no son to inherit them? Abram knew that God had promised him a numerous posterity; but he was not apprized how this was to be verified, and whether he was to adopt some other for his son and heir. Therefore, he asks modestly, how he out to understand the promise. --- And the son, &c. Heb. is differently rendered, "and the steward of my house, this Eliezer of Damascus." We know not whether Eliezer or Damascus be the proper name. The Sept. have "the son of Mesech, my handmaid, this Eliezer of Damascus." Most people suppose, that Damascus was the son of Eliezer, the steward. The sentence is left unfinished, and must be supplied from the following verse, shall be my heir. The son of the steward, filius procurationis, may mean the steward himself, as the son of perdition denotes the person lost. C.
Ver. 6. Reputed by God, who cannot judge wrong; so that Abram increased in justice by this act of faith, believing that his wife, now advanced in years, would have a child; from whom others should spring, more numerous than the stars of heaven. H. --- This faith was accompanied and followed by many other acts of virtue. S. Jam. ii. 22. W.
Ver. 8. Whereby, &c. Thus the blessed Virgin asked, how shall this be done? Lu. i. 34. without the smallest degree of unbelief. Abram wished to know, by what signs he should be declared the lawful owner of the land. H.
Ver. 9. Three years, when these animals have obtained a perfect age.
Ver. 12. A deep sleep, or ecstasy, like that of Adam. G. ii. 21, wherein God revealed to him the oppression of his posterity in Egypt, which filled him with such horror (M.) as we experience when something frightful comes upon us suddenly in the dark. This darkness represents the dismal situation of Joseph, confined in a dungeon; and of the Hebrews condemned to hard labour, in making bricks, and obliged to hide their male children, for fear of their being discovered, and slain. Before these unhappy days commenced, the posterity of Abram were exposed to great oppression among the Chanaanites, nor could they in any sense be said to possess the land of promise, for above 400 years after this prophetic sleep. H.
Ver. 13. Strangers, and under bondage, &c. This prediction may be dated from the persecution of Isaac by Ismael, A. 2112, till the Jews left Egypt, 2513. In Exodus xii. and S. Paul, 430 years are mentioned; but they probably began when Abram went first into Egypt, 2084. Nicholas Abram and Tournemine say, the Hebrews remained in Egypt full 430 years. from the captivity of Joseph; and reject the addition of the Sept. which adds, "they and their fathers dwelt in Egypt, and in Chanaan." On these points, we may expect to find chronologists at variance.
Ver. 14. Judge and punish the Egyptians, overwhelming them in the Red sea, &c. H.
Ver. 16. Fourth, &c. after the 400 years are finished; during which period of time, God was pleased to bear with those wicked nations; whose iniquity chiefly consisted in idolatry, oppression of the poor and strangers, forbidden marriages of kindred, and abominable lusts. Levit. xviii. Deut. vi. and xii. M.
Ver. 17. A lamp, or symbol of the Divinity, passing, as Abram also did, between the divided beasts, to ratify the covenant. See Jer. xxxiv. 18.
Ver. 18. Of Egypt, a branch of the Nile, not far from Pelusium. This was to be the southern limit, and the Euphrates the northern; the two other boundaries are given, Num. xxxiv. --- Perhaps Solomon's empire extended so far. At least, the Jews would have enjoyed these territories, if they had been faithful. M.
Ver. 19. Cineans, in Arabia, of which nation was Jethro. They were permitted to dwell in the tribe of Juda, and served the Hebrews. --- Cenezites, who probably inhabited the mountains of Juda. --- Cedmonites, or eastern people, as their name shews. Cadmus was of this nation, of the race of the Heveans, dwelling in the environs of mount Hermon, whence his wife was called Hermione. He was, perhaps, one of those who fled at the approach of Josue; and was said to have sowed dragons' teeth, to people his city of Thebes in Beotia, from an allusion to the name of the Hevites, which signifies serpents. C. --- The eleven nations here mentioned were not all subdued; on account of the sins of the Hebrews. M.

Book Of Genesis - From The Latin Vulgate - Chapter 7
INTRODUCTION.
The Hebrews now entitle all the Five Books of Moses, from the initial words, which originally were written like one continued word or verse; but the Sept. have preferred to give the titles the most memorable occurrences of each work. On this occasion, the Creation of all things out of nothing, strikes us with peculiar force. We find a refutation of all the heathenish mythology, and of the world's eternity, which Aristotle endeavoured to establish. H.
---------------------------------------
This Book is so called from its treating of the Generation, that is, of the Creation and the beginning of the world.
B. Chapter 7
Noe with his family go into the ark. The deluge overflows the earth.
[1] And the Lord said to him: Go in thou and all thy house into the ark: for thee I have seen just before me in this generation. Dixitque Dominus ad eum : Ingredere tu et omnis domus tua in arcam : te enim vidi justum coram me in generatione hac.
[2] Of all clean beasts take seven and seven, the male and the female. Ex omnibus animantibus mundis tolle septena et septena, masculum et feminam : de animantibus vero immundis duo et duo, masculum et feminam.
[3] But of the beasts that are unclean two and two, the male and the female. Of the fowls also of the air seven and seven, the male and the female: that seed may be saved upon the face of the whole earth. Sed et de volatilibus caeli septena et septena, masculum et feminam : ut salvetur semen super faciem universae terrae.
[4] For yet a while, and after seven days, I will rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and I will destroy every substance that I have made, from the face of the earth. Adhuc enim, et post dies septem ego pluam super terram quadraginta diebus et quadraginta noctibus : et delebo omnem substantiam, quam feci, de superficie terrae.
[5] And Noe did all things which the Lord had commanded him. Fecit ergo Noe omnia quae mandaverat ei Dominus.
[6] And he was six hundred years old, when the waters of the flood overflowed the earth. Eratque sexcentorum annorum quando diluvii aquae inundaverunt super terram.
[7] And Noe went in and his sons, his wife and the wives of his sons with him into the ark, because of the waters of the flood. Et ingressus est Noe et filii ejus, uxor ejus et uxores filiorum ejus cum eo in arcam propter aquas diluvii.
[8] And of beasts clean and unclean, and of fowls, and of every thing that moveth upon the earth, De animantibus quoque mundis et immundis, et de volucribus, et ex omni quod movetur super terram,
[9] Two and two went in to Noe into the ark, male and female, as the Lord had commanded Noe. duo et duo ingressa sunt ad Noe in arcam, masculus et femina, sicut praeceperat Dominus Noe.
[10] And after the seven days were passed, the waters of the flood overflowed the earth. Cumque transissent septem dies, aquae diluvii inundaverunt super terram.
[11] In the six hundredth year of the life of Noe, in the second month, in the seventeenth day of the month, all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the flood gates of heaven were opened: Anno sexcentesimo vitae Noe, mense secundo, septimodecimo die mensis, rupti sunt omnes fontes abyssi magnae, et cataractae caeli apertae sunt :
[12] And the rain fell upon the earth forty days and forty nights. et facta est pluvia super terram quadraginta diebus et quadraginta noctibus.
[13] In the selfsame day Noe, and Sem, and Cham, and Japheth his sons: his wife, and the three wives of his sons with them, went into the ark: In articulo diei illius ingressus est Noe, et Sem, et Cham, et Japheth filii ejus; uxor illius, et tres uxores filiorum ejus cum eis in arcam :
[14] They and every beast according to its kind, and all the cattle in their kind, and every thing that moveth upon the earth according to its kind, and every fowl according to its kind, all birds, and all that fly, ipsi et omne animal secundum genus suum, universaque jumenta in genere suo, et omne quod movetur super terram in genere suo, cunctumque volatile secundum genus suum, universae aves, omnesque volucres,
[15] Went in to Noe into the ark, two and two of all flesh, wherein was the breath of life. ingressae sunt ad Noe in arcam, bina et bina ex omni carne, in qua erat spiritus vitae.
[16] And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him: and the Lord shut him in on the outside. Et quae ingressa sunt, masculus et femina ex omni carne introierunt, sicut praeceperat ei Deus : et inclusit eum Dominus deforis.
[17] And the flood was forty days upon the earth, and the waters increased, and lifted up the ark on high from the earth. Factumque est diluvium quadraginta diebus super terram : et multiplicatae sunt aquae, et elevaverunt arcam in sublime a terra.
[18] For they overflowed exceedingly: and filled all on the face of the earth: and the ark was carried upon the waters. Vehementer enim inundaverunt, et omnia repleverunt in superficie terrae : porro arca ferebatur super aquas.
[19] And the waters prevailed beyond measure upon the earth: and all the high mountains under the whole heaven were covered. Et aquae praevaluerunt nimis super terram : opertique sunt omnes montes excelsi sub universo caelo.
[20] The water was fifteen cubits higher than the mountains which it covered. Quindecim cubitis altior fuit aqua super montes, quos operuerat.
[21] And all flesh was destroyed that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beasts, and of all creeping things that creep upon the earth: and all men. Consumptaque est omnis caro quae movebatur super terram, volucrum, animantium, bestiarum, omniumque reptilium, quae reptant super terram : universi homines,
[22] And all things wherein there is the breath of life on the earth, died. et cuncta, in quibus spiraculum vitae est in terra, mortua sunt.
[23] And he destroyed all the substance that was upon the earth, from man even to beast, and the creeping things and fowls of the air: and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noe only remained, and they that were with him in the ark. Et delevit omnem substantiam quae erat super terram, ab homine usque ad pecus, tam reptile quam volucres caeli : et deleta sunt de terra. Remansit autem solus Noe, et qui cum eo erant in arca.
[24] And the waters prevailed upon the earth a hundred and fifty days. Obtinueruntque aquae terram centum quinquaginta diebus.
Commentary:
Ver. 2. Of all clean. The distinction of clean and unclean beasts, appears to have been made before the law of Moses, which was not promulgated till the year of the world 2514. Ch. --- Clean: not according to the law of Moses, which was not yet given, but such as tradition had described---fit for sacrifice; (M.) though they might be of the same species as were deemed clean in the law, which ratified the ancient institution. --- And seven: (Heb.) simply seven, three couple and an odd female, for sacrifice after the deluge: one couple was to breed, the other two perhaps for food. H. --- Some imagine, that there were fourteen unclean and four clean animals, of every species, in the ark, because the Sam., Sept., and Vulg. read, "seven and seven." Origen, &c. --- But our Saviour, sending the Disciples to preach two and two, did not appoint a company of four to go together, but only of two, as is generally allowed. Mark vi. 7. C.
Ver. 11. Seventeenth day. On the tenth, God had given the last warning to the wretched and obstinate sinners, to whom Noe had been preaching, both by word and by building the ark, for 120 years; all in vain. This second month is, by some, supposed to be the month of May; by others, that of November. Usher makes Noe enter the ark on the 18th Dec. 1656. The waters decreased May 17, mountains appear July 31, he sends out the raven Sept. 8, and leaves the ark Dec. 29, after having remained in it a year and ten days, according to the antediluvian computation, or a full year of 365 days. The systems of those pretended philosophers, who would represent this flood as only partial, affecting the countries which were then inhabited, are all refuted by the plain narration of Moses. What part of the world could have been secure, when the waters prevailed fifteen cubits above the highest mountains? To give a natural cause only for this miraculous effect, would be nugatory: but as waters covered the earth at first, so they surely might again, by the power of God. H. --- Fountains and flood-gates. These are the two natural causes which Moses assigns for the deluge, the waters below, and those above in the sky or firmament. Heaven is said to be shut when it does not rain, (Luc. iv. 25.) so it is here opened, and flood-gates, or torrents of rain, pour down incessantly. But God attributes not the deluge to these causes alone; he sufficiently intimates that it would be miraculous, (v. 4. I will rain,) and still more emphatically, (C. vi. 17.) Behold I. Heb. "I, even I myself, do bring on a flood of waters." The idea which Moses give of the flood, corresponds with that which he before gave of chaos, when earth and water were undistinguished in one confusing mass. c. i. 6. The Hebrews look upon it as a continual miracle, that the earth is not always deluged, being founded, as they represent it, on the waters. Jer. v. 22. Calmet and others have proved, both from Scripture and from philosophical arguments, the universality of the deluge, against Isaac Vossius, &c. H.
Ver. 16. The Lord shut him in, by an angel besmearing the door with pitch, to prevent the waters from penetrating, while Noe did the like in the inside. C. --- Thus God supplies our wants when we are not able to provide for ourselves, and though he could do all by himself, yet he requires us to co-operate with him, and often makes use of secondary causes. W.
Ver. 24. Days: counting from the end of the forty days, when the deluge was at its height. C. --- In all the histories of past ages, there is nothing so terrible as this event. What became of all those myriads of human beings who perished on this occasion? We know not. Some have charitably supposed, that, although the far greater part perished everlastingly, a few who had been incredulous while Noe preached, opened their eyes at last, when it was too late to save their bodies, and by sincere repentance rescued their souls from the flames, and were consigned to do penance, for a time, in the other world. These heard the preaching of J. C., or believed in his redemption, while they were yet living, and so deserved to partake of his mercies, and joyfully beheld his sacred person when he came to visit them in their prison of purgatory. 1 Pet. iii. 19. He came and preached to those spirits that were in prison: which had been sometime incredulous, when they waited for the patience of God in the days of Noe, when the ark was a building: wherein a few, that is eight souls, were saved from drowning by water. Whereunto baptism, being of the like form, now saves you also, &c. See F. S. Bellarmine, &c. In these last words of S. Peter, we may also notice, that the ark was a figure of baptism, which is so necessary, that without its reception, or desire of it at least, no man can be saved. It is also a figure of the cross, and of the one true Church, as the Fathers remark, with S. Aug. de C. D. xv. i. M. &c. S. Greg. hom. 12 in Ezech. &c. --- This is so striking that it deserves to be seriously considered. It was only one, though God could have ordered many smaller vessels to be made ready, perhaps with less inconvenience to Noe, that we might reflect, out of the Church the obstinate will surely perish. S. Jer. ep. ad Dam.: In this ark all that were truly holy, and some imperfect, like Cham, were contained, clean beasts and unclean dwelt together, that we need not wonder if some Catholics be a disgrace to their name. The ark had different partitions, to remind us of the various orders of Clergy and Laity in the Church, with one chief governor, the Pope, like Noe in the ark. It was strong, visible, &c. and pitched all over with the durable cement, bitumen, and riding triumphant amid the storms, the envy of all who were out of it, till at last it settled upon a rock. So the Church is built on a rock, against which the gates of hell shall not prevail: she is not less obvious to the sincere seeker, than a city built on the top of the highest mountain, &c. We might here take a retrospective view of the chief occurrences and personages of the former world; we should observe the same order of the things from the beginning,---the conflict of virtue and vice, the preservation of the true faith and worship of God among a few chosen souls, who preferred to be persecuted by worldlings, rather than to offend God. They contended earnestly for the fiath once delivered to the Saints, to Adam and Eve, once innocent, and afterwards penitent. We behold original sin, and the promised remedy for mankind; while the rebel angels are abandoned, without redress. There was kept up a communion of saints: sacrifice to the one God was performed generally by the heads of families, who were priests in the law of nature. Even Cain, though a bad man, through hypocrisy, chose to offer sacrifice before he had quite broken off from the society of the faithful, and resolved to become the father of all excommunicated persons, and of all seceders. C. iv. 16. He was admonished by God that he had free will, and might merit a reward by a different conduct. His sentence, as well as that pronounced upon Adam, and upon all mankind, before the flood, reminds us of the particular and general judgment; as the translation of Henoch sets before us the happy state of the blessed, and the immortality, of which it was an earnest. See Douay Bible, where the chief mysteries of faith are pointed out as the creed of the Antediluvians. Even the B. Trinity was insinuated, or shewn to them, at a distance, in various texts: the unity and indissolubility of marriage were clearly expressed; the true Church continued in Noe, while the chain of schismatics and heretics was broken, and Cain's progeny destroyed. In this period of time, we may discover what the ancients so often describe respecting the four ages: --- the golden age is most perfectly found in Paradise; but only for a few days, or perhaps only a few hours, during which our first parents preserved their innocence. The silver age may have lasted rather longer, till the murder of Abel, or 128 years, when Cain began to disturb the peace of the world. From that time, till the giants make their appearance, we may reckon the age of brass. But that of iron had continued for may years before the flood. The like deterioration of morals we may discover after the deluge, and again after the renovation of the world, by the preaching of the gospel. For some time after these two great events, things bore a pleasing aspect; Noe was busy in offering sacrifice to God, Christians wee all one heart and one soul, enjoying all things in common, and God gave a blessing to the earth, and confirmed his covenant with men. Then Cham, Nemrod, and Babel appear, heresies in the new law break forth, and disturb the lovely harmony of mankind: but still a sufficient number preserve their integrity, till about the days of Abraham and Arius, in their respective periods, and may be said to have lived in the silver age, when compared with the brazen insolence of the great majority of those who came after. The iron age of these two periods, may be dated from the persecution of Epiphanes against the Jews, when so may apostatized from the faith, and from that much more terrible persecution which will be raised against Christians by Antichrist, the man of sin, (of which the former was a type) when the charity of many shall grow cold, and Christ will hardly find faith upon the earth. To that age may just be applied, those strong expressions of disapprobation which God made use of before the flood. G. vi. 3. 6. 12. He will punish the crimes of that age with a deluge of fire, and say, The end of all flesh is come before me, &c. v. 13. Time shall be no longer. Apoc. x. 6. H.

Here’s my mid-year list for 2017 hip hop releases. did a top 42 instead of a top 100 since that would mean i’d have to pad the list with a bunch of albums i don’t really love. i’ll definitely a top 100 at the end of the year though. i probably should have posted this back at the end of june but i forgot to. it ended up working out though, since a few of these albums just dropped within the last few weeks. i don’t know if i’d say this year is better than 2016, but there’s definitely been a wide variety of quality releases that stand out. hopefully the second half of the year is just as good, definitely looking forward to new milo, Dälek, armand hammer, ivan ave, and that planet asia/apollo brown collab. Graduate position: UBath.SexRoleEvolution
PROJECT TITLE: Sex role evolution: phylogenetic analyses of mating and parenting in vertebrates Main Supervisor: Professor Tamás Székely, University of Bath, UK Co-Supervisor: Dr Daniel J Field, University of Bath, UK Co-Supervisor: Prof Innes Cuthill, University of Bristol. UK Project Enquiries: [email protected] Project Background Sex roles (e.g. courtship, mate choice, pair bonding and parenting) are immensely diverse social behaviours. Recent research has uncovered key elements of sex role variation, but significant uncertainties remain. Appropriate sexual behaviour in nature is essential for reproduction, and thus understanding sex roles is critical for evolutionary biology and population biology. Understanding sex roles is also important for biodiversity conservation since disruptions to normal sexual behaviour due to environmental changes may reduce population viability. A general trend in social behaviour is that females tend to be the caring sex, whereas males focus more on mating; however there are illuminating exceptions. This division of sex roles has far-reaching effects on ecology, physiology and life histories of males and females. The causes, however, of sex role differentiation have remained controversial. This PhD project is focused on understanding the causes of sex role evolution in vertebrates using phylogenetic approaches. Project Aims and Methods This PhD project will focus on vertebrates (i.e. fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals) that exhibit particularly well-studied sex role behaviour. The PhD project has three objectives: 1. to investigate the association between key components of sex roles: courtship, competition for mates, pair bonding and parental care; 2. to examine the influence of variation in ecology, life- history and social environment on sex roles; 3. to investigate the multi-way feedbacks between sex roles, environment, life histories and the social environment using phylogenetic tools. These objectives will be addressed using (i) detailed information on courtship, pair bonding and parental behavior collected by Prof Szekely’s team from multiple bird populations, and (ii) across vertebrates based on published data in the literature. This will be a challenging and stimulating project that can potentially produce cutting edge results. The student will not only benefit from the excellent facilities at Bath and Bristol, but also from interacting with top international scientists involved in the project. Fieldwork in exotic locations can be negotiated. Candidate The ideal candidate has a strong interest in evolution, phylogenetic methods and behaviour, and direct experience working with any vertebrate taxon. Excellent quantitative skills are required to perform phylogenetic comparative analyses and run mathematical simulations. Innovative thinking will be necessary to draw links between disparate sources of data. Training The training will focus on three major skills: 1. Phylogenetic analyses: this includes inferring phylogenies and using trees in a comparative framework for testing macroevolutionary hypotheses. Training in computational and advanced statistical methods will be a focus of this PhD; 2. Fieldwork including experimental design, behavioural observations, estimating ecological and life-history variables in the field; 3. Transferable skills including research planning, statistical analyses, paper writing, presentation and communication skills. References / Background reading list 1. Remeš, V., R. P. Freckleton, J. and now… the best contestshipping episode of them all!!! yell it loud and clear (even though your parents will think you are weird)
WHO WHAT WHEN WHERE WYNAUT!!!
Link to episode can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbLuBt3YaKQ
whenever I say Why not I say it like a wynuat. This is the best episode.

1:37 Well May will win the contest you two will battle for the 4th time!
1:42 Fancy words will only give May more determination to win… Drew knows this.
1:57 Okay so we have Mr.Perfect, Mr.Know-it-all, and Mr.Rose. Wonderful.
I REMEMBER THIS THEME SONG! I REMEMBER EARLY 2016! MUST SING! gha
3:08 Ash saying the titles sometimes makes me laugh. “MAY WE HARLEY DREW’D YA!” Imagine him saying that. ya.
3:11 Narrator, she is working hard at her skill because Drew convinced her too in his own way.  ADVANCED SHIPPERS HE WAS NOT BEING MEAN AND THAT IS WHY SHE IS TRYING, SHE IS TRYING BECUASE DREW TOLD HER TO AND MADE HER WANT TO IN HIS OWN WAY.
3:23 Masquain flap your wings not your legs
3:26 Flirting!
3:35 Drew is teaching May some tactics :3
Also, May has really improved! Character development and attack skills, and based off these episodes it was mainly because of Drew!
3:51 … that was not somersault. Translations…
3:57 MAGICARP. this is just the best team rocket entrance. Ever. Just imagine a big magicarp jumped into the beach and said “MAGICARP" I laughed at this the first time I saw it~

Tumblr media
4:42 silly max! You pressed the hypo turbo engine switch! You should’ve known :P
4:56 they are now standing next to each other even though last time they were almost across the room, they walked next to each other and called their pokemon at the same time. This is what writers do when they foreshadow.
Tumblr media
5:00 I dunno :Looks up I am going to on google: I am going to die. Jessie you are going to die!
5:15 and then you hear wabbafet
Hi team Rocket!
5:25 Imma look that on google… You are at my house.

5:40 but James was trying to cheer you up by being Wabbafet :P
5:49 Thank you Wabaf- I mean Meowth
5:54 Don’t worry, they’re having fun Max.
6:08 People might say that Drew is being mean here and that Drew doesn’t like May but this has a second meaning and May didn’t get it (just like how she never noticed him flirting)
6:19 :Screenshots:
Tumblr media
I cursed myself with faceswap
Tumblr media
6:25 So ye ol’ pirate likes eh story o’ contest shipp'n?
6:30 :Looks up mirage: mi·rage m?'räZH/ noun noun: mirage; plural noun: mirages
an optical illusion caused by atmospheric conditions, especially the appearance of a sheet of water in a desert or on a hot road caused by the refraction of light from the sky by heated air.
okay I get it now! The wynuat!!!
6:42 Leechy berry?
6:50 Teaching May about Leechy berries in his own way.
6:58 I find it amazing that May says she knows everything about them, proceeds to pronounce it wrong, and then Drew point that out. I didn’t expect him to.
7:03 :Takes screenshot
Tumblr media
7:05 great! I BET THAT IT IS WYNUAT
7:19 ShuuHaru
I told you I love this episode AND WE AREN’T EVEN HALFWAY DONE MWA HA HA AH AHA HA
7:36 Swellow did you find contestshipping
7:43 Don’t worry Max!
7:52 wynuat? Also while listening to this I heard Max say "Ya! They might’ve decided to-” finish this sentence please :3
8:21 Mudkip: points with fin
8:23 “You don’t get out much do you…”  "Well you just don’t know how to have fun!“ -Contestshipping
8:33 you know what I want this man to be a chaperone at a school field trip.
8:48 in the time you were gone, James, Jessie and Meowth turned into wabaffets! :D
9:00 WYNUAT WYNUAT REGRET IT? WHY SHOULD I REGRET IT?
9:03 No james. did you hear it say Wabafett? No. It said wynuat.
9:08 at least Meowth knows!
9:12 let me tell ya’ lads ye ol’ story of how I got ‘ere
9:58 People say Drew never gets exited.
10:08 DON’T DIE GUYS YOU ARE MY LIFE
10:20 HOLDING HANDS OMG LIFE SAVER SHIPPING BULBAPEDIA!!!
One scene includes a closeup of May and Drew holding hands while falling down a cliff and into a river.
… I’m disappointed in you Bulbapedia
10:27 YOU CAN MAKE IT!!!
10:34 NOT THE WATERFALL FROM ALL OF THE MOVIES!!!
10:45 NOT DREW!!! (MAY GOT DREW SHE WANTS TO HELP HIM D:)
10:49 Bulbapedia: Then May sees that Drew has been knocked out from the impact of the waterfall, she becomes extremely concerned and tries to keep Drew’s head above the water while telling him not to worry because she’s got him.
You missed something, when somebody passes out they stop holding their own weight, meaning that Drew is actually way heavier than if he were conscious, let’s see an average 10-year-old boy weighs about 90 pounds… May is carrying an almost 100 pound weight, above water, while also trying to keep herself over water
THE THINGS ADRENALIN CAN DO MAN.
10:58 WYNUAT!!! HELP!!!
11:03 the mirage island.
11:15 SAVE THE CHILDREN
11:24 Hopefully safe with the wynuat!
11:34 AHOY MATES I 'AVE FOUN’ 'UR FRIEN’!
11:46 You did as much as you could…
11:54: "Drew… are you okay? Say something please!” May said in a destressed tone of voice
12:02 omg I ship it so much Bulbapedia? how about you?
After being pulled out of the river by the Wynaut, May is seen begging a still unconscious Drew to say something. When he finally wakes up, she is visibly relieved.
12:06 No May… you don’t have to be so modest. If it weren’t for you he would be dead. he would have drowned.
May is too modest.
12:10 Well the wynuat… OMG I WANT ONE NOW! I WANT TO TRAVEL WITH ALL OF THEM! THE WYNUAT REPRESENT CONTESTSHIPPERS!
12:22 Wynuat is a light pokemon, so is there body an illusion? I saw somewhere a theory that their tails are the pokemon and their blue body is a shield… so the blue part is an illusion?
“They travel in herds and at night sleep together in groups”
all of the contestshippers are wynuats. We stick together.
12:30 Drew is happy :D
12:33 omg the wynuat are so nice!!! “Are these for us?” “Wynuat!” Omgggg I love them so much
12:39 I love Drew in this pic I dunno why
12:42 Your ship is strong.
12:48 yes. GodI just wanna hug May and Drew. So. Flippin. Much.
12:54 aww poor team rocket

13:34 ye’ ol’ lad ta'tst'a 'tory if I ever said i’
13:58 Imma not mention how his last statement was incorrect because this episode is so great.
14:04 You studied their shoes max?
14:08 actually Drew was unconscious so he didn’t walk, and the wynuats were in the trees and picked up May and Drew. You are wrong guys.
14:16 WYNUAT HAVING A JUNE 10TH PARTY???
14:23 wynuat join us?
14:30 Let’s join the contestshipping celebration!
14:39 wynuat join us too Drew X3
14:47 Bulbapedia? Do you wanna say something?
During the Wynauts’ “party” shortly after, Drew is seen watching May intently.
Watching her intently ya say? He must be happy that she is having fun :D (btw he likes her)
14:53 After a long journey… we have finally found the thing we have been looking for: food. it has been many mins we have walked around this forest, searching and searching while following our mentorour, Wabaffet, but finally…
nvm I’ll stop.
14:58 James is great, so is jessie. Now have sour tastes :3
My shoulders heart from typing so I won’t tag as much… :’(
15:29 Drew is still watching her have fun :3
15:33 wtf is that! D:
15:37 oh no!!!
15:40 Jessie you love romantic stories give them the berries
15:46 Dew: Oh no! The person who I helped grow as a trainer and saved my life is about to be taken away D:
15:47 unless y'know. You sell her as a slave.
15:55 The wynuat our us, the contestshippers, remember that. Also I love the episode and all, but I’m sick of the female being in danger, wynuat it be the male for once???
16:03 you wait for the wynuat of course :3
16:07 great job guys!!! Keep it up and we will help in the advencement of contestshipping!
16:14 DO YOU TRUST ME?
16:27 you said sift her out at the end… why is she on a rope and you are still vacuming?
16:40 Shiiipppiiiinnnnnggggg
16:50 Aye re'ember 'is cave 'iketha back o’ me ol’ 'and
17:13 remember kids, an Arbock turns into a Saviper!
17:23 Death by leaves
17:29 protect our ship!
17:50 ya but Drew didn’t tell rosellia WHERE to shoot it, what do they talk telepathicly now?
17:57 Rip a rope with peatals. Sure I’ll try that.
17:59 LOOK AT ALL OF US WYNUAT
18:07 and then I remembered Advencedshipping and started to cry becuase even though this is the best contestsipping episode people are going to advanced ship becuase of this scene.
and then they beat team rocket :skips to after that:
19:52 Enjoy the rest of the contestshipping in this episode!
19:54 So Rodrick is actually older Pual. Cool.
20:23 And Drew got May to make pokeblock, in his own way :3
The end (that took me 4 hours to make wtf)

Highlights of the new design:
ISL51002 video ADC: * improved sync processing robustness * reduced sampling jitter with DPLL * fine-grained video LPF * automatic sampling phase adjustment
Cyclone V FPGA (5CEFA5F23C8N): * higher performance and more resources * hard memory controller * large number of IOs
Clocking and memory improvements: * Si5351C clock generator for accurate output pixel clock generation (framelock or free-running) * 512MB LPDDR2 RAM and 16MB QSPI flash
New AV inputs: * HDMI * SPDIF (optical)
2×20 pin GPIO connector for future expansion possibilities such as: * composite & s-video input module * secondary video output (e.g. VGA) module * latency tester interface module * game controller port module (for using OSSC Pro as a dedicated FPGA console)
The processing modes enabled by the HW can be split roughly into three types:
1. Pure line multiplier * both active and blanking lines multiplied – basically what original OSSC does * simplest mode with least latency
2. Adaptive line multiplier * visible lines are multiplied but horizontal & vertical total matched to standard timings * high compatibility with minimal latency overhead (1-30 lines typically) * enables some new output configurations such as 4x240p/2x480p in standard 1080p frame
3. Scaler * higher flexibility via LPDDR2 utilization * HQ deinterlacing * non-integer scaling * rotation * refresh rate conversion
It will take time until all the features get implemented, but release can be expected once the HW is complete and a sufficient number of new features are available and verified. As a thanks to community’s support for the first project, upcoming prototypes of the new model will be sent to the guys who have contributed most on the original OSSC firmware. New developers are also welcome as the project is large enough to enable different implementation areas for several people. For DIY-builders and those who can’t wait for the final HW, a small add-on PCB compatible with a couple Terasic FPGA dev boards (DE10-Nano, DE2-115) is in works and available soon. Together with the parent dev board, it can be used to implement a subset of the functionality presented above.
Parece que 2020 será um grande ano para quem gosta de consoles clássicos. O OSSC Pro deve finalmente unir o melhor dos dois mundos: framebuffer e latência baixa, deixando ambos à escolha do usuário conforme o console e a TV.
