Guilty Supergirl Pleasures

So, I am at work. Talking to one of the moms I work with. We always talk about mom things, that’s what working moms do, btw, it bonds us and alleviates our #WorkingMomGuilt.  We talk about school trends, our kids’ activities, bitch about our husbands and inevitably talk about what we binge on Netflix once the kids are finally down. 

Last year we would say “Are you watching Supergirl? You need to watch Supergirl!” Usually moms would have already latched on to the show (in Canada we have fewer shows to choose from and therefore have a lot more of these kinds of shared cultural touchstones) .  We would then gush about how good the show is and why, namely that it is “watchable” unlike other crap aimed at kids, and that we appreciate the values and so on. After sufficient joint admiration and light banter about how funny and meta Cat Grant is, we would lean in, lower our voices, and (wait for it.....) confess how our favourite part is really just the Danvers Sisters. “ME TOO !!” we would squeal, and then validate our strange little sisterhood crush by wondering why on earth we were all so damned hooked on this aspect of the show over everything else.

It’s a superhero show based on a cartoon aimed at young people, it’s not meant to be consumed as a study into complicated adult sibling relationship dynamics. But we could not stop watching. We thought that it must be like a food craving being a sign that you are lacking something in your diet (when you crave meat your are likely low iron, salt is usually PMS and so on). We live and die by this sweet and sour relationship because there has been nothing...like...it..on....television - ever - in our lifetime.  This wonderful female to female dynamic which is not sexual or competitive is a fascinating depiction of women supporting and challenging other women, and it is magical. We didn’t realize how much we needed this on our screens until we were gifted with the Danvers Sisters.

Since around Christmas though, the enthusiasm ended with us all describing what the last straw for us was as we stopped letting our kids watch, and warned other moms to “not bother” with the show.

Danvers Sisters please come back.
