Wrote a book

I finished writing a book. I’ve never expected to even try writing a book, but I just did it. It took a long time, and I’m sure it’ll take much longer to even get anyone to read it, but i wrote the damn thing. It’s a zombie novella. It’s a love story. It’s a law and order thriller. It was fun to write. I’ve read it so many times at this point that I fucking hate it, so i can’t really even think of anything nice to say about it. I do believe in it, though. There’s twists, and it’s a zombie story from a different perspective. My friend, Jay, said that the plot was unpredictable and it’s not boring. That was after reading the roughest draft. I’ve rewritten it twice now, and I’m ready to show it to anyone who’s willing to read it. 

Internet advice is a real bore. “So I’ve written a book. Now what?” “here’s the next twelve steps after you’ve written a book.” Everyone has all the advice, as long as you click the link and maybe pay a couple of bucks.  Whatever, I’m not writer. I’m nothing. I manage a bakery. My band isn’t playing anymore, I haven’t painted anything in over a year, and I can’t even remember the last play I did. I just manage a bakery. I guess I’m pretty good at baking.

It’s managing a bakery that’s a huge pain in the ass. Who wants to be a manager? The salary is a living wage, but it’s salary, so whether I work twenty hours a week or sixty hours a week I make the same amount of money with no overtime. Most weeks, I’m averaging about sixty hours a week. Mainly its tough because the employees just don’t give  a fuck. I don’t blame them. who likes their job?  This job is pretty chill, though. I’ve made it a four day work week so people get between 30-40 hours a week, and almost all of them are making $15 an hour. I’m not saying that they’re spoiled, but I’ve done everything I can to make it fair and livable so people can work one job and have time for a life. They still call off all the time. Calling in sick calling in late calling off with no reason even no call no shows. I tend to spend a lot of my time covering people’s shifts as they inevitably call off. then on my days off I have to answer emails, schedule interviews, take inventories, and do all of the other administrative tasks that get pushed aside while I’m covering people’s shifts. 

Some people say “write them up , fire them, and hire new people” Sure that makes sense if you don’t give a fuck about people. “So what they’re ruining your life.” Okay you have a point. Well, it’s not exactly okay to write someone up when they call in sick. After a bunch of missed days, I can possibly have a meeting and ask, “Do you think you’ll be able to work or should you take some time to focus on your health?” Which is management for, “Since you’re super sick I’m gonna fuck you extra bad and get rid of your income at this terrible moment in your life.” I’m not really into that. even if i was, I’m scheduling people to interview every singe day that I’m scheduled to work, and 99% of them don’t even show up. They just don’t show. Out of the 30 that i’ve scheduled this month, I’ve interviewed three. Out of those three, one’s already been hired and quit within a week. I talk to other people, and they say uplifting things like, “Yeah that’s the industry.” It gives me little hope.

I wrote a book, and I want people to read it. I’m sure that it won’t drag me from my misery in the hell of middle management, but if some people get to read it, and enjoy it, I’ll be super happy. It’s a trashy fiction that’s not going to change the world, but I did omit all pronouns as a literary experiment. That was hard, and I’ll never do it again. It was good to try it.
