Re-watching Amphibia, I find it weird that people say TBoTE revealed Marcy was "the third wheel" of the friend group, when it seems the other girls had no problem doing what she wanted, just not with the same interest or enthusiasm. If anything, I thought the show was indicating Anne was "the third wheel" most of the time. Also, I personally feel like TNN does a better job transitioning from TC's tone to S3A than people say, and it does a better job than CA did in transitioning into 3B's tone.

I only finished rewatching S1 so I can’t comment on a (re)rewatch perspective, but I’m not sure any of the girls were a third wheel, exactly.

I do think Marcy internalized a lot of her problems and feelings, instead of sharing them, out of fear of being rejected. At the same time, she was also somewhat careless in her interactions with others. I’m not saying it’s a bad trait, just something to recognize. I’m not going to get into that any deeper because I’ll fall into a hole of “who has to manage relationship dynamics when someone doesn’t intuitively recognize certain dynamics” and I’m own uh life experiences. As for Anne, I do think she was the most likely to do things whether she was comfortable doing them or not.

Overall though, I think each of the girls was projecting a certain way “she had to be” for the others to continuing being her friends. These projections led to a lot of problems in the plot of Amphibia which was resolved by the end (and talking and growing separately from each other).

I don’t recall thinking Commander Anne was a bad transition, but I do remember thinking that The New Normal flowed a lot better for me than it seemed to for others when it aired.

Someone far taller than her had taken the boxes of instant mix profiteroles and hadn’t brought the ones behind said packets closer to the edge of the shelf so people shorter could have instant mix profiteroles. Worse still, Aoi could have sworn they were on the mid to bottom shelves the last time she had gotten a hankering for those little chocolate and cream pastries, but clearly someone had shuffled things up since then.

   Aoi returned to the flat of her feet and sighed. She perked up when she heard the trundle of trolley wheels and when her head lifted, so did her hopes. She was hoping, praying, that the person nearby was taller than her.

   The good news, he was. 

   Her eyes widened as her jaw slackened. Now that she was closer to the inner circles of Team Playmaker than before, she would know that face anywhere. That person was Ryoken.

   “Hi, Aoi.” he said, awkwardly.

   “Hello, Ryoken.” she replied. 

   She licked her lips and her eyes scanned over his trolley without thinking. He wsd buying a lot of non-perishable goods, such as canned foods and instant ramen among other things such as toilet paper and hand sanitiser and other body care items. It seemed that he was intending on returning to sea as a fugitive from the law. She didn’t blame him, to be honest.

   He hovered awkwardly as he felt scrutinised by her glare. “Did you want something?” he asked.

   “Yes. I want profiteroles.” she replied, far too blunt.

   “What?” Ryoken made a funny face over this as that had not been the answer that he had been expecting.

  "I’m... too short.” she said. 

   “Oh! Oh, okay. Sure.” Ryoken shrugged.

   Aoi stepped aside and his trolley began to roll away. It seemed like it had a funny wheel so whilst Ryoken passed in front of her, she ducked behind him and grabbed onto the handle of the trolley so his groceries didn’t continue to roll down the aisle.

   Ryoken reached up and he deftly grabbed the packet mix for her. He looked over it and sighed. He grabbed another packet for himself. A twinge of a smile graced Aoi’s lips as she watched that. It seemed even super villains were tempted by sweets once in a while.

   “Here you go, Aoi.” he replied.

   Aoi reached across the trolley. “Thank you.” she said, her fingers brushing over Ryoken’s. His fingers were tougher-feeling than she thought they would be.

   As such a scene unfolded, an elderly couple walked past. The woman swatted the man she was clutching onto.

   “Why don’t you do cute things like that for me?” she asked.

   “Because you never asked.” he playfully huffed.

   Aoi’s shoulders prickled. She turned around, unthinking, and found herself blustering “We’re not-”

   Ryoken sighed. “No, let them believe it. It’s useless to correct people like that.”

   “...True.” Aoi admitted as she let go of the trolley. “But, um, thank you, Ryoken. For everything. Enjoy your profiteroles.”

   “Yeah, sure.” Ryoken shrugged as he put his box into his trolley.

   “Well, see you around. Hopefully not when everything is going to hell in a handbasket again.” Aoi said.

   “Yeah, see you around, Blue Maiden.” Ryoken replied.

   And with that, they split off from each other, rather embarrassed from the little encounter.

Really? I recall blood spraying out of Zoro when Mihawk slices him and Nami's arm nearly covered in blood after stabbing her Arlong tattoo. Also recall significant blood dripping down Zoro's chest after Arlong rips the temporary bandages off. Not to mention Luffy's arms and fists covered in blood from Krieg's spikes.

Regardless, I still think the manga is certainly more violent in certain places. Ex. Belle-mere's crushed arm and seeing much more of her when she's shot by Arlong.

Basically, I think if OPLA matched the degree of visual harm depicted in the manga it would be quite brutal to watch, but at the same time, treats the world as a much more serious place to live in.

What are your ideas on Amphibia’s idea of self-love and how it’s tackled?

I’m afraid I don’t have very in-depth thoughts (or more precisely I hadn’t thought about this idea until asked*). But from my few days brewing on it my answer is: I think it’s idea of self-love is something I would have been grateful for when I was Anne’s age and I think it’s tackled pretty well.

As an addendum, I felt only Anne really had an arc defined by discovering self-love. To me, Marcy’s arc was about coming to term with facing unpleasant things, and Sasha’s was recognizing how she wanted to be a better person/grow. I also don’t see any of the Plantars needing to learn self-love. Sprig might come closest but to me, his arc is more about finding a friend, someone who will actually like him/spend time with him, and it’s less him learning to love himself but finding the friend who will love the himself he already is pretty open about expressing/seems to like.

As to what I mean in more specifics (because of course), I’m having a hard time arranging it my head coherently. But essentially: I felt Anne’s arc to self-love was handled very gradually.

She’s starts out (Best Fronds) as very concerned with what her friends will think if she isn’t agreeable to what they say; she has to be likable, she has to be what others want her to be. But then she meets Sprig (and family) and live in Wartwood, where she has to make decisions on her own/withiut her usual friends. Wartwood is disturbed & distrustful but she earns their trust & respect (Toad Tax). Then later there’s Wally’s bit of “you can be whoever you want to be here” advice and her becoming less worried about whether she’s the “town weirdo” (Wally and Anne). Then there’s the whole Reunion bit with Sprig defending her and saying she’s a good person & brave & not going to be pushed around; she’s someone—as she has presented herself in Wartwood—of value and love (at least in the eyes of this pink frog boy. See this is why I get so emotional about these two?)

I’d say there’s less direct instances in S2a (at least nothing immediately jumps to mind), but by the time she’s there she has had some growth. I think this is most evident in her relationship with Marcy. By the end of her stay in Newtopia, she’s opened up to Sprig (and vice versus) (Hopping Mall). She’s learning to express how she feels and be okay with that. So by the time the show gets to Bessie and Microangelo (I love that ep), she’s happy with herself. (Oh, Tritonio helped, less in his ultimate goal reveal but in instilling in Anne an actually desire to work at something and see herself as worthy as be capable of working at something. Oh, and Stumpy’s statement that her parents would proud of what she did feels like it boosted some kind of ‘You’re ideas may be over the top but they come from a good place.”)

Like omg! To 13 yr old me those kinds subtle and but very clear & audial expressions of my value and worth would have been amazing. Maybe it’s okay to just be the weirdo you are. Maybe others *will* like you. Maybe someone will be your friend even if you share your weird and sentimental feelings. Aaaah! (Heck, I’m in my 30s and I’d still love this).

In that sense, to me, Anne’s self-love grew very much from the space where others (frogs) allowed her to be who she was and as she grew more expressive, she became more sure of herself and the more sure she became the more self-love was genuine. Anyway, I think it’s beautiful.

Also, one person having worked at WB wouldn't be enough to copy its house style, nor necessitate that Toei would use that house style.

One complaint I’ve seen about Amphibia S3 are claims that it ignored Anne’s trauma after the events of True Colors. What are your thoughts on this?

I personally felt it worked okay? Because Anne was so focused on getting back that she didn’t have a lot of time to “freak out” or “be upset” and then this was interposed with “Don’t work yourself into a frenzy/sleep deprived state”.

Whenever I try to imagine what a better presented reaction to trauma would be, I’m left unsure how it would work? Because Amphibia is not trying to tell a trauma story, but one about growth and change.

More specifically, there were certain narrative parallels that happened when Anne returned to earth (e.g. a reverse of her situation but with the Plantars, since the story is about Anne and Plantars), plus important cultural details.

Additionally, I thought Anne’s response as a 13 yr old made sense to me reflecting back on being 13 yrs old. Admittedly the latter is my biased recollection and there may be 13 yrs old who feel it wouldn’t. I felt that if I’d been that age, my approach to the situation would just be to focus on what was happening right in front of me and making sure I didn’t lose any of the family I’d found, rather than being upset.

On top of that, by the S2a rolled around, Anne was not the same person she was at the beginning. She has stronger sense of responsibility and, in S3a specifically, a need not to rely on anyone else. I mean, that hasn’t worked out great for her up to that point; Marcy helped and looked what happened to her. So I can understand why she’d be very focused but also tightly wound up.

But the way I see it, fairy tales, despite obviously being a big thing that RGU draws from, aren't the only type of story they're critiquing. imo, "The Tale of the Rose" resembles religious myths more than anything else, namely Pandora's Box & The Garden or Eden. It's a common archetype; that the world was pure & perfect until Woman was introduced to it.

From her ignorant disobedience (Pandora opening the box despite being instructed not to, Eve eating the fruit of Knowledge of Good & Evil & convincing Adam to do the same,) all pain & strife in the world springs. With Pandora & Eve both being the first human women created in their respective mythos, these stories have an inherently misogynistic quality to them. The same is true with The Tale of the Rose; Anthy, seemingly the only girl in the world who cannot be made a — princess (so in some way echoing the "first woman" thing,) is blamed for plunging the world into pain & suffering by disobeying. And is literally crucified for it.

First: That’s a solid argument and I can see it’s applicability to ‘The Tale of the Rose’.

It brings to mind (α) Bluebeard - where a wife’s curiosity gets her into trouble but she triumphs, and (β) the deconstruction of said myths & fairytales cf. Bluebeard. Basically one of the “morals” at the end of Perrault’s Bluebeard critiques the wife’s being curiosity. I feel that falls into similar ground as Eve and Pandora. This has been pointed out and reimagined in retellings and reinterpretations.

Second: The comparison brings out what makes Anthy’s situation different (to me) is the cause of her “causing harm to the world” and being crucified for it — from what we can glean, she’s acting out of love, though the story presents it as jeslousy (she is the only girl who can never be a princess).

I feel like there’s a lot to dissect in (1) the rewriting & reimagining of religious myths (Eve as a positive force willing to learn & live) via whose telling the story and (2) the witch/princess dichotomy. And I still think it’s very interesting to discuss, so yeah, fun times, good analytic point.

My general point, I believe, was: this is what fairy tales mean to me and that is not what’s presented in “The Tale of the Rose’ so from a exclusive fairy tale analysis/archivist perspective, I wouldn’t include it in a fairy tale collection, nor assign it an ATU classification. Which, I think, I still broadly adhere to. But which isn’t related to your point, which was more an additional analysis.
