Yesterday was Apple's annual WWDC, during which they announced details of upcoming features of the iOS for all their devices.
The thing went on for nearly two hours. The focus of the last hour was what Apple called Apple Intelligence.
They banged on the entire time, trying to convince its users that their (the user's) data was safe and would not be taken or shared on Apple's servers and beyond.
It was a very clever bit of marketing to effectively highjack artificial intelligence and not once did they ever refer to it as such. I wish I'd kept count of the number of times they used the term 'Apple Intelligence". It was a lot.
I wasn't taken in by a single word of it. If data can be gathered then it can be sold or stolen - regardless of their promises.
Mark my words. AI will, over the coming years, take over the world. It really scares me. It's already taken over creativity. AI is writing novels, it's rewriting history and making serious decisions that affect everyone.
You can no longer believe a word anyone tells you or an image you see. People are now receiving phone calls believing they are talking to a real person when they're not. It's a scammers paradise.
So if Apple want to this closely associate themselves with ARTIFICIAL intelligence and call it theirs they must be prepared to accept the consequences.
Just for a second it has questioned my decision to get myself a new, fully up to date, device. I'll try and live with it :-/

Apple M4 Chip and iOS 18: A Look at Next-Level Performance
Tumblr media
Apple M4 Chip Rumors Apple M4 Chip Features
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says Apple will add M4 Chips to its Macs in late 2024. Artificial intelligence performance will be improved by the Apple M4 Chip. Apple intends to launch its first Macs equipped with the Apple M4 Chip family of CPUs in that time frame.
M4 Chip Release date Since Apple unveiled the M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max CPUs all at once in October of last year, it’s probable the Apple M4 Chip range may be shown around the same time. Gurman said the M4 will be arriving in late 2024 and early 2025 for all Macs.
The first to get Apple M4 Chips are the iMac, low-level 14-inch MacBook Pro, elite 14-inch MacBook Pro, 16-inch MacBook Pro, and Mac mini. The 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models will get them in springtime 2025, the Mac Studio’s in mid-2025, and the Mac Pro later in.
Apple is approaching manufacture of the Apple M4 Chip, which will come in at least three flavours. Donan, Brava, and Hidra are the codenames for the entry-level, mid-range, and top-tier chips, respectively. The low-end Mac mini, MacBook Air, and entry-level MacBook Pro will all utilise the Donan chip, while the higher-end MacBook Pro and MacBook mini will use the Brava chip.
Since the Hidra chip is made for the Mac Pro, it is likely a “Ultra” or “Extreme” category processor. With regard to the Mac Studio, Apple is testing variants that include an M4 Brava CPU variant that is likely of a better calibre than the M4 Pro and M4 Max “Brava” chips, as well as an unpublished M3-era chip.
The maximum amount of Unified Memory that M4 models of Mac desktop computers might handle is 512GB, a significant increase above the present cap of 192GB.
Although TSMC, an Apple supplier, is expected to use an enhanced version of the 3nm process for increased performance and power efficiency, the M4 chips will be constructed using the same 3-nanometer technology as the M3 processors. Apple also intends to include a much enhanced Neural Engine with more cores for AI applications.
This week brought news of Apple’s hardware roadmap. They plan to release a complete portfolio of M4-based Macs later this year, along with various iPad models, and should solidify plans for the introduction of newer iPad Pro and iPad Air models next month.
As they examined how things are going with the iPhone 15 Pro now that it is halfway through its flagship lifetime, they also heard some new rumours regarding iOS 18, which is scheduled to be introduced at WWDC in a few months. Continue reading below for all the information on these tales and more!
As to the source, the M4 series of CPUs will be rolled out later this year to the MacBook Pro and iMac lines, and during 2025, additional models like as the MacBook Air, Mac mini, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro are anticipated to get updates as well.
According to a recent report by Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, other models with M4 series CPUs would be introduced in the next year, after the initial release of the first ones later this year. Gurman provided a more detailed plan for these Macs in his Power On email today.
Gurman reaffirmed that the Mac Studio and Mac Pro would be compatible with Apple’s internally tested M3 Ultra processor, but he added that it is “all but assured that at least some of Apple’s high-end desktops” would forego the M3 chip series.
Gurman said that Apple would highlight the M4 processor series’ artificial intelligence capabilities.
iOS 18 iOS 18 Features
According to reports, Cloud Servers Won’t Be Used for Apple’s First AI Features in iOS 18
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple’s initial round of new AI capabilities for iOS 18 won’t depend on cloud servers at all.
In the Q&A part of his Power On email today, Gurman said, “It appears that that the first set of features will work entirely on device as the world watches Apple’s big AI unveiling on June 10.” “That indicates that there is not a cloud computing element to the organization’s large language model, the application that enables the new capabilities.”
iOS 18 update Gurman predicts that Apple will likely continue to provide certain cloud-based AI capabilities powered by Gemini from Google or another supplier. Regarding possible collaborations in generative AI, Apple is said to have spoken with businesses including China’s Baidu, OpenAI, and Google. Although it is uncertain whether Gemini or another chatbot will be directly incorporated into iOS 18, it is not anticipated that Apple’s ChatGPT like chatbot would be included in iOS 18.
Given that Apple supply chain experts, like Ming-Chi Kuo and Jeff Pu, have said that the business is aggressively buying AI servers, it is plausible that Apple may eventually provide some of its own cloud-based generative AI capabilities.
New generative AI capabilities for the iPhone’s Spotlight search function, the Siri, Safari, Shortcuts, Apple Music, Messages, Health, Numbers, Pages, Keynote, and other apps are reportedly coming with iOS 18. Previously, Gurman stated that generative AI would let Siri answer more difficult inquiries and auto-complete phrases in Messages.
iOS 18 release date At WWDC, which runs from June 10 to 14, Apple is likely to reveal iOS 18 and other software improvements.

WWDC (Worldwide Developer’s Conference - the time of the year Apple announces the new things in their OSes) is next week, so good luck on Tim Cook if he’s not gonna announce the spin-off during that week.
Craig Federighi on the other hand, can announce the upgrades and invite James Lance for a Perfect Hair Off.

Apple Search Engine in the works, with a reveal coming at Apple’s WWDC event on 6th June (5 days from now), it is rumoured. Apple SEO about to become the next big thing in website optimisation? or will this be more of an iDevice-centric search engine that exists behind the walled garden? Apple Search News-breaker... Apple Search Engine in the works, with a reveal coming at Apple's WWDC event on 6th June (5 days from now), it is rumoured. Apple SEO about to become the next big thing in website optimisation? or will this be more of an iDevice-centric search engine that exists behind the walled garden? Apple Search News-breaker Barry Barry Schwartz of Search Engine Roundtable broke the news on his website and then shared the revelation on Twitter, where it has gained traction and begun a discussion about the ifs, buts, pros and cons of Apple Search entering the online search market... What we think about Apple Search It would make sense if Apple Search became a worldwide web product, if you think about it. Millions of people use Apple devices daily and search - particularly web search where Google are so dominant - would give the company a new area to exploit and masses of growth opportunity for ad revenue, product sales and new user acquisition. Apple Search Engine Confirmed* According to an Apple insider, Apple Search is definitely coming: https://twitter.com/Scobleizer/status/1530606446009733121 Of course, Apple already has a few options when it comes to search, so Apple Search may not be an announcement of a public search engine, it may just be advancements in the Apple search functionality that already exists. Apple Search: iPhone/iPad/etc. A search engine is the software used to help people find information. Apple’s search engine is called "Apple Search" on the iPhone and iPad. You can access this engine by searching for a term on your device. It presents you with a list of relevant results. You can tap on a result to open it. In addition to the standard search results that Apple provides, you can also search the App Store or iTunes. You can also access the "News" search option to get the latest headlines on the topics you’re interested in. You can also search Wikipedia articles on your iPhone or iPad. The search engine helps you find information by providing a list of suggested results based on your search terms, similar to Google, Bing, or DuckDuckGo to find information or use Apple’s iCloud Search to find content stored in iCloud. Siri Siri is another form of Apple Search that exists on every Apple device, which spans desktops, handhelds, wearables and TV. Siri works like a normal search engine in many ways, just by using your voice instead of typing. The AI behind Siri is pretty advanced and it allows you to make common tasks quicker and hands-free. How will the new Apple Search involve Siri? Will it enable global search using Siri commands to all, even non iDevice customers? First things first, it’s important to note that Apple has not yet confirmed that it is working on a search engine. However, we do know that Apple is working on an update that will be delivered sometime this year. If you search online for “Apple search engine”, you will find a lot of speculation about it. There are also some who have even said that they have heard it will launch at WWDC. Yet, there is also speculation that it won’t come this year at all. This is an important question because if and when it does launch, it will have a tough time competing with Google and even Microsoft, who have both received major boosts in their web search functionality in the past year. We also know that Apple has been mum about the fact that it is working on a new search engine, so be sure to keep an eye out for any official announcements in the coming days! Conclusion The Apple Search engine, if it is in fact coming, will be an interesting development. Many believe that search is where Google and the likes are going to make most inroads. Google may not be as dominant as they once were, but they still have a strong position.
Apple Search engine seems like a battle between Google and Apple, where Google will be fighting hard to claim the top spot. It’s worth noting that Google is not the only search engine out there and there are many more. Apple might also use other search engines, like DuckDuckGo, to boost its search rankings. That said, the fact that Apple has its own search engine, even if it is in an early stage, will give it an edge over its competitors. Apple Search may also be used to enhance some of the other iApps that you already use. The new search engine would give Apple another way to engage with its customers and drive them towards their products. It may also be used to help people find lost items or get directions (and, of course, help you find your iPhone). Apple Search is a win-win-win proposition for Apple, its customers and consumers. The new search engine, even if it is still in the early stages of development, will become the go-to search engine for many people because it is easy to use and does most of the work for you. No controllers. •Apps can react to the world around you •Look at search fields and you can just start talking to fill it out •Also the front of the device shows your eyes… its… weird…  •Calling it “Eyesight” •Supposed to make it easier for people to see where you’re paying attention
Tumblr media
•Again, this is such a weird new dynamic that its hard to describe here without seeing the visuals •Works as a 3D Camera  •Turn any space into a 3D IMAX theater
OH BOB IGER IS HERE
Tumblr media
• Ok actually watch this Disney demo. Wild stuff. But also consider of it half of it is probably fake.
•New R1 chip in addition to the M2 chip for the device. •runs “virtually silent” so it makes some noise lol •Device makes a 3D avatar of you for FaceTime calls. Like a lifelike avatar. Very different from how Meta does their calls •New images streamed to the displays in 12 milliseconds
Tumblr media
•visionOS is the name of the operating system here. The assumed name was realityOS. •Lots of developers, including Adobe & Microsoft, building support for launch •New app store for the device as well •Unlocks via Optic ID, which uses your Iris and stores information encrypted on the device •Device does not share data with developers about where you look on the screen •Over 5000 patents went into this thing
Tumblr media
•$3499  •Available early next year •that’s both more expensive and later than what as expected
And that's a wrap. Some real interesting stuff shown today. Public Betas of the software updates should be available in about a month. And if you're looking for the new iPhones or watches, you're about three months too early. Check back in September for more on that!
You can view the whole keynote from today below or a quick video recap from Apple as well.

Will Apple's headset enhance productivity?
I’ve written several times about mixed reality experiences over the last 6 or 7 years here on my blog. I recently went back and looked at some of those posts and so I thought I’d sum up my thinking as it stands today, as well as detail what I hope to see from Apple’s headset.
For quick context, VR means that you can only see the virtual world, AR means that you can see some amount of the real world in addition to virtual elements, and MR refers to the broader landscape of experiences that blend any amount of those two.
My main interest has been in seeing a well executed AR experience primarily because I haven’t seen a great VR one yet. Some VR experiences are fun but none of them are very productive.
What do I mean by productive?
Using a Mac on a large screen with a good keyboard and mouse is arguably the most productive set of tools ever devised for the human mind. Information and creation I/O out the wazoo. For the last several decades no one, including Apple, has made a more productive platform. While the iPhone and iPad are very useful platforms that I use every single day, they simply are no where near as productive (yet?) as the desktop computer paradigm. So far my use of any MR experience has felt super unproductive. Doing something as simple as browsing the web in a VR experience has been a slow and clunky experience.
In my personal life experience, here are my most productive platforms in order of how much I can get done while using them:
A Mac laptop plugged into a large screen with a good keyboard and mouse
iPad with a keyboard
iPhone (especially with voice recording, camera’s ability to scan documents, etc.)
A good notebook and pen
Of course, this list needs a big “it depends on what I’m doing” asterisk. There are some tasks, like scanning in handwritten notes, that the iPhone has jumped way way ahead on over the last few years. Or other tasks, like sketching out ideas for my garden, that pen and paper are simply far better suited for. But overall, for the work that I do the Mac reigns supreme.
For my use, I’d love an augmented experience that enhances my productivity not one that encumbers it. I have no interest in using a platform that makes me less productive simply because it looks cool.
OK, so that is where my thoughts are today on MR.
On the cusp of Apple’s headset, which seems very likely to be previewed at this year’s WWDC, I’m looking forward to where they’ve settled on this. Will it be a platform built for fully immersed fun experiences like Ready Player One? Or, will it be a productive augmented version of what we have now like Minority Report?
It is my hope that within 3 or 4 versions of Apple’s headset - say, by 2026 or so - that using an Apple headset for productive work will be as good or better than using an iPad with a keyboard. If they've somehow figured out how to be more productive than using a Mac then they've shot the stars.
If those are my hopes what are my worries?
Apple hasn’t shown itself to be good at creating a virtual assistant and I think the headset would likely require one. Siri is the worst virtual assistant currently on the market. Last night, I asked Siri “How many inches is 500 millimeters of rain?” and it replied with a link to the web to figure it out on my own. I rephrased my question “How many inches is 500 millimeters?” and it replied accurately. I confused it because I said the word rain? Using Siri today while at the same time using ChatGPT or Bard or the like really shows the gap Apple has to make up.
But perhaps they’ve been working as hard on Siri as they have on the headset and they’ve waited to debut the two together? An all new Siri 2.0 that is available on all devices including Apple’s new headset? Given Siri’s reputation in the market I imagine they will have to touch on how they’ve improved it dramatically for this new device.
Another worry I have is how uncomfortable and draining using most headsets are. Use any MR device on the market for a few hours and you’ll see what I mean. The devices themselves feel like a lunchbox on your face and your eyes, ears, neck, etc. are all knackered when you’re done.
One last note regarding price: I think the first version being $3,000 is totally plausible. Perhaps Apple will have a $3,000 build just for developers that they can then return for Apple credit like they did with the Apple silicon transition. If the device is great and makes me as productive as using an iPad or better than $3,000 sounds good to me. I'm sure the price could come down slightly over time.
I'm very hyped that Apple is entering this market. I genuinely hope they have something special to offer. If the headset isn't meant for me but is more geared towards people that play games or will watch movies on the device that is fine too. But I'll be looking for something that enhances my productivity.

The Crafting of Craft.
🖇️ Talking about knowing what you’re talking about - nobody who knows what they are talking about would confuse me with a real programmer.
That said, I just read 🔗 Going the Extra Mile — Beyond CSS, most of which is well above my technical pay grade - but still I was fascinated by the attention to detail around ‘crafting Craft’.
Consider - a whole post (well 75%) devoted to the process behind getting a check box ‘just right’ and the remaining 25% explaining ‘push way’, which I knew had to be coded in some way - but who knew there is a phrase for it?
Great read - even if you aren’t technical you get the idea of their focus on good design - Steve would have been proud of them
“When you’re a carpenter making a beautiful chest of drawers, you’re not going to use a piece of plywood on the back, even though it faces the wall and nobody will ever see it. You’ll know it’s there, so you’re going to use a beautiful piece of wood on the back. For you to sleep well at night, the aesthetic, the quality, has to be carried all the way through.”
💬 Steve Jobs
… which probably explains why they won app of the year and were name called (not once - but twice) in this year’s WWDC.
The article ends with …
All of this for what? Will all users see the difference? — Probably not. Was it worth it? — Absolutely. These are the minor details that often go unnoticed when present, but become conspicuous when missing. We strive for having as many of those details as possible, making the experience great but at the same time — seamless.
Kudos to Craft - a Great App.

What Makes Apple’s Marketing Strategy So Unbeatable?
The Power of Simplicity in Apple’s Marketing
Apple’s marketing is simple, clear, and bold. It focuses on one main idea: less is more. The company knows people want products that are easy to use. Apple’s ads and branding are clean and minimal. For example, look at their iPhone ads. They usually have a single product image with a catchy tagline like “Think Different.” This simple message stands out. Apple avoids cluttered designs or too much information. Instead, they highlight one key feature. This approach grabs attention and makes their message memorable. Customers see the product and know exactly what it offers. That clarity is a huge strength.
Emotional Appeal and Strong Storytelling
Apple connects emotionally with its audience. The brand makes users feel special, creative, and part of something bigger. For instance, their “Shot on iPhone” campaign is a perfect example. They use real photos from users, showcasing creativity. This kind of content resonates deeply with people. Apple also tells compelling stories. In product launches, they focus less on technical details. Instead, they share how the product improves life. They show real-life use cases. Steve Jobs’ product launches often felt more like storytelling sessions than sales pitches. These stories create strong emotional bonds between users and the brand. When customers feel a connection, they’re more loyal.
Building a Community and Ecosystem
Apple is more than a brand; it’s a community. Their products work perfectly together. If you own an iPhone, you might also want a MacBook or Apple Watch. Why? Because they integrate smoothly. Features like AirDrop or iCloud make life easier. Once you’re in the Apple ecosystem, it’s hard to leave. Apple also holds events like WWDC, which build excitement. People feel they’re part of an exclusive club. This creates brand loyalty. Customers become lifelong Apple users. Their marketing isn’t just about selling products. It’s about building a loyal, tight-knit community that grows stronger over time.

Saturday Morning Coffee
Good morning from Charlottesville, Virginia! ☕️

I still get a bit lost in my new gig — at WillowTree — as a React Native/TypeScript dev. The syntax is making more sense and getting easier to follow, but, I do have a difficult time understanding the errors produced by yarn ts:check. It’s the same each time I learn a new language.
I’m also developing an interest in Rust. That’ll have to be a part time interest for a long time I suppose. I have more important business to attend to. 😃
Onward!

Shareshot is an iOS app that transforms how you share iPhone and iPad screenshots
A friend of mine, Marc Palmer, is part of the duo who created Shareshot! It is, as always, absolutely beautiful, full featured, and stable.
If I’m not too lazy moving forward I should use it to make screenshots for Stream blog posts and the like.
Congratulations, Marc! 🥳

Mobile app interactivity, multimodal voice technology, and AI are all converging with Apple Intelligence — Apple’s new artificial intelligence feature set announced at this year’s WWDC, coming soon with iOS 18 (maybe in October). And the secret sauce powering those awesome interactions is something called App Intents.
Andrew is pretty legendary in the halls of WillowTree. So damned smart and witty, and he plays a mean fiddle and banjo.
Anywho, go give his piece on App Intents a gander, you might learn a thing or two.

Austin Dillon has been stripped of the NASCAR Cup Series playoff eligibility that came with his victory at Richmond Raceway.
Austin Dillion looked great all night. I don’t recall how many laps he lead but it was a lot. He was two laps short of victory when a late caution came out.
On the restart he was beat off the line by Joey Lagano and fell into second place.
I wanted to see Mr. Dillion win so badly. He hasn’t had a win in a couple years and Richard Childress Racing needed one but the way he did it was not great.
He kept the win but was stripped of his points and playoff berth. They should’ve disqualified him and given the win to Legano, if I’m being honest about my feelings.

Sonos is laying off about 100 people, the company confirmed on Wednesday. The news comes as Sonos is expecting to spend $20 to $30 million in the short term to repair the damage from its poorly received app update.
It’s incredible how much an app redesign can make or break an application or company.
Another critically acclaimed podcasting app called Overcast was also redesigned and released recently. It too has had a very difficult time with its subscribers. Lots of one star reviews and hate.
Rewrites can kill companies. Don’t do it. Evolve your code over time. Think of it as a Ship of Theseus.

In a throwback to the past, this blog post takes us on a journey back to a time when eBPF was a focal point in the realm of kernel security research. In this update, we recount the discovery of CVE-2023-2163, a vulnerability within the eBPF verifier, what our root-cause analysis process looked like, and what we did to fix the issue.
Fresh off the heels of the Crowdstrike fiasco we get a story of how Google engineers found vulnerabilities in a Linux technology that allows for similar extensions to the OS. Similar in desired outcome, not in implementation.

Quite a few websites are unusable by now because they got “optimized for Chrome.” Microsoft Teams, for example, and the list is long. These websites fail for no good reason.
Chrome has definitely become the new Internet Explorer in a way. Devs have become lazy and don’t code for the open web, they’re coding against a specific browser. Not good. 🤦🏻‍♂️

How Spotify started — and killed — Latin America’s podcast boom
What Spotify has done is not podcasting if it doesn’t allow any podcast player to subscribe to a feed. That’s part of what makes a podcast a podcast. What they’ve done is something that needs a new name.
Lately I’ve heard some podcasts announce ad free versions available on Apple Podcasts, which is also just as bad as Spotify’s locked up audio thing.
Please, don’t do this, keep your podcast a podcast and find a better way to create subscriptions. Others have done it. You can too.
Patreon
Apple is requiring that Patreon switch to their iOS in-app purchase system starting this November, or risk being removed from the App Store. Here’s what’s coming, and what you can do about it.
My opinion on this is simple.
If they really believe in creators Patreon should abandon their iOS App in favor of a really great mobile experience on their website.

Apple Search Engine in the works, with a reveal coming at Apple’s WWDC event on 6th June (5 days from now), it is rumoured.
Siqi Chen, Founder & CEO of Runway – Interview Series
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/siqi-chen-founder-ceo-of-runway-interview-series/
Siqi Chen, Founder & CEO of Runway – Interview Series
Siqi Chen is the founder and CEO of Runway, an a16z and Initialized funded startup enabling operators to understand their business without needing a degree in finance. As an operator and founder, he served as the CEO of Sandbox VR (a16z), VP of Product and Growth at Postmates (later acquired by Uber), CEO of Hey, Inc (Google-funded, acquired by Postmates), Head of Product at Zynga (IPO 2011) and CEO of Serious Business (funded by Lightspeed, acquired by Zynga).
In addition to his operational roles, Siqi is an investor in nearly a hundred companies, including notable names like ElevenLabs, Amplitude, Pipe, and Owner.com. Prior to his entrepreneurial ventures, Siqi made significant contributions at NASA JPL, where he achieved the distinction of being the sole recipient of a Congressional Space Act award while still in school. This recognition was a result of his contributions to machine vision technology on the Mars Exploration Rovers.
Can you explain the concept of ‘ambient intelligence’ and how it differentiates Runway from other AI-driven financial platforms?
Ambient Intelligence is a completely new expression of how AI can be used in products. Most products treat AI as a separate creature right now—it’s either an agent working on its own, or a chat interface you have to talk to. Those are the default experiences, but there’s another way to do it: by making the AI invisible.
If you look at how people actually use AI at work, GitHub Copilot is probably the most widely used tool. It isn’t a separate chatbot or agent. It’s more subtle, and so deeply embedded in GitHub’s platform that it just makes what you’re doing faster and more efficient. With the current capabilities of AI models, that kind of seamless integration is a much better expression of AI.
Apple did the same thing with its latest iOS announcement at WWDC. They didn’t add separate agents or chatbots. They just built AI into their workflows, so it can solve math equations as you type them or summarize text in real-time.
That’s how AI should be expressed: as a tool for thought, working quietly in the background. At Runway, we call it Ambient Intelligence.
We agree with Joel Spolsky, who worked on Microsoft Excel, and once said: “Google uses Bayesian filtering the way Microsoft uses the IF statement.” That’s how deeply ingrained technology should be in a workflow.
It’s the same with AI. Four years ago, we thought about calling ourselves “CFO.ai.” We were advised against it because calling our product “AI-powered” would soon sound as dated as labeling it “powered by AJAX” or “powered by AWS.” All technology eventually becomes outdated, so the focus should be on enhancing user experience instead. In Runway, AI is deeply embedded in workflows and doesn’t have to be prompted. It automatically explains what your model does or why your actuals are different from your forecast. That’s what we mean by Ambient Intelligence—an expression of AI that’s a native part of your workflow, so it enhances everything you do and makes you go faster.
What inspired you to create Runway, and what key challenges in financial planning are you aiming to address with this platform? In 2020, when I was the CEO of Sandbox VR, our revenue dropped to zero after the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Nobody knew how long the pandemic would last, so we needed to create multiple contingency plans for emergency funding—ranging from 3 months to 2 years. We had to create those scenarios manually in Google Sheets, using email and Slack to collaborate. It was such a clunky and error-prone process, that I asked my CFO if there was a better tool for this task. He said: “No, this is it.” I couldn’t believe it. We had tools like Notion, Figma, and Airtable, but nothing built specifically for finance. Everyone found finance—and by extension, business—difficult to understand. But no one had solved that problem. So I asked myself a simple question: what if everyone could understand how their business actually works? That’s why I started Runway.
Our goal is to make business accessible and understandable to everyone. Runway shows how all functions, from sales and marketing to product and engineering, fit together. It gives teams a clear, shared understanding of the business, so they can align on strategic decisions and create more impact.
Ambient Intelligence goes further. Because it’s deeply embedded in Runway, it makes your work clearer, better, and faster. It automatically gives helpful context, and surfaces deep insights to help you make better decisions effortlessly.
How does Runway’s Ambient Intelligence proactively support finance teams without being intrusive?
The short answer: by not turning AI into a separate creature—like an agent or a chatbot—that you have to interact with.
Ambient Intelligence is invisible; it’s part of your everyday experience with Runway. It works quietly in the background, without interrupting. It’s built into the platform, so it can anticipate intent and help you without being prompted. In the same way the GitHub Copilot autocompletes your code, or Apple Intelligence solves formulas as you write them, Runway’s Ambient Intelligence makes your work clearer, faster, and more efficient.
What that means is you don’t have to trace a driver through your entire model to understand how it connects with everything else—we just tell you that, in plain English. You don’t have to check if your actuals match your forecast—we highlight deviations and help you understand what happened. All of that happens automatically—Ambient Intelligence doesn’t make any changes to your model or scenarios, and doesn’t have to be told which context or insight is most relevant to you in the moment. It just does the job.
Could you elaborate on the ‘Driver Explanations’ feature and how it enhances understanding across the organization? In any business model, the drivers are interconnected and form a complex network. That means you have to trace a driver through the entire model to understand how it’s calculated and what it impacts. The way people do that today is by digging through spreadsheets and tracing everything manually. Understanding a single formula is not enough; you have to know how one driver impacts others, and how the entire network is structured. That’s how you build deep intuition about the business and identify the levers you can pull.
Runway makes that easier. When you hover over a driver, we show you a clear, concise, automatically-generated explanation that helps you understand how it works. You don’t have to ask a chatbot what ‘Gross Margin’ is and how it fits into your model—we explain everything in plain English. That’s how ‘Driver Explanations’ work—seamlessly, invisibly, and automatically, so everyone at your company can understand your model.
Runway claims to turn hours-long tasks into seconds. Can you share specific examples or metrics that highlight this improvement
This was a quote from one of our customers Andrew Maher, Head of Finance at Superhuman. Read the full story here.
“With Runway, we saw our efficiency skyrocket with a 50X to 100X improvement, turning hours-long tasks into seconds,” said Andrew Maher, Head of Finance, Superhuman. “Complex financial models were distilled into clear, actionable insights, making it easier to respond quickly to key executives. Runway was like adding a touch of magic to our financial strategy, turning data into actionable intelligence—imagine having a co-pilot in finance that brings critical insights alongside number crunching.”
How does Runway’s integration with existing business tools like accounting software and CRM systems enhance its functionality? We give you a holistic understanding of your business by pulling in both data and context. Runway integrates with over 650 of the most common tools, and we go beyond usual integrations like general ledgers and HR systems. We connect with CRMs, databases, spreadsheets, and even project management software like Jira.
We believe that finance isn’t just about finance; it’s about understanding how everything in the company fits and works together. By integrating with project management tools and databases, for example, we connect important context to your business model. This way, different departments work with a single source of truth, and get a shared understanding of your business.
How does Runway position itself against competitors like traditional financial planning tools and other modern AI-driven platforms? Our core belief places us in an entirely different category from other financial solutions.
The main challenge of modern finance is collaboration. But the idea that finance should be collaborative isn’t new; it’s been around forever. And yet, no one has actually built a product that enables real collaboration. Why is that?
Because traditional tools only help you save time or give you more control. That’s where they stop. Our core belief is that these things are table stakes. What modern finance needs is something that helps everyone immediately and intuitively understand how the business works. Real collaboration can only happen once everyone has that shared context. It’s understanding that lies at the center of this problem. That’s what Runway solves for finance, product, sales, marketing, and every other team.
To make business understandable, we start by connecting your data to important business context and your roadmap. We use abstractions that actually map to how people think. And people don’t think of plans in terms of numbers on a spreadsheet—they think of decisions and timelines. So we show plans in a way that’s intuitive, and that everyone can easily play with. Anyone in your team can modify these plans, and see how different decisions would impact your model. That’s how we deliver a shared understanding of how your business works.
Our deep focus on creating clarity sets us apart. Our customers, like Superhuman, AngelList and ConvertKit (soon to be Kit), are already seeing the difference with Runway.
What strategies are you employing to maintain Runway’s competitive edge and continue its rapid growth in the market? We don’t compete with those who build financial products for finance teams.
We have customers in finance, but the core value we deliver is this: real collaboration across the entire organization, driven by true understanding.
We’re uniquely focused on creating deep, intuitive understanding. Our design and engineering efforts are focused on this single goal. No one else in the market shares our level of focus on solving this specific problem.
I don’t think we have any competition at all. We’re playing an entirely different game.
How do you envision the role of AI and ambient intelligence evolving in the finance industry over the next five years? As AI capabilities evolve, I think we’ll see a major shift in how work fundamentally gets done. While I don’t think models are quite there yet, it’ll happen very quickly. When it does, we’ll see a significant increase in the amount of leverage people have—one person will do the work of ten, a hundred, or even a thousand people. Enterprises will leverage AI to get more output with the same headcount, and planning will become exponentially more complex. But people will still need to make strategic decisions and understand how the business works—only much faster, and way more efficiently than ever before. We’re going to need radically better tools for thought just to keep up. Ambient Intelligence can enable that by enhancing human capability effortlessly, without getting in the way.
As a CEO and AI influencer, what are your thoughts on the broader implications of AI in business planning and decision-making? Let’s set aside AGI, ASI, and the idea of technological singularity for a moment—because in that world, where AI does everything and we’re all lounging by a pool, it’s a completely different story.
Before we reach that point, though, I think we’ll see an exponential boost in human capability—where one person can do the work of hundreds. Human output will reach unprecedented levels, making businesses and systems much more complex. We’ll need AI to help us understand what’s happening and to make smarter decisions.
It’ll all go hand-in-hand—AI will drive increased leverage, which in turn will add to the complexity of systems. To manage increased complexity, we’ll need even more advanced tools to further enhance human capability.
Thank you for the great interview, readers who wish to learn more should visit Runway.
