HC that the Fairy Council all have painted nails with their colors + their partner or close friend's color. Xanthous and Elrik (and/or Emerelda!) having matching colors, Brystal and Lucy matching, and Skylene and Tangerina matching with orange and blue colored nails especiallyy.

And Mrs. Vee and Madame Weatherberry having colors for the six Fairy Council members in ATOM.

moral of the story is TLoS Xanthous constantly acts like he has a stick up his ass because he cant see his boyfriend and if i had known that i wouldn’t have hated on him when i read TLoS (i haven’t read a tale of sorcery yet the books were still coming out when i read them and i decided to start reading from TLoS again and realised why Xanthous was like that)

these are some edits i made for the fairy council from the land of stories. all moodboards were made by me and contain my watermark on them. all images used were found on pinterest and edited on picsart. while i own the edits, i DO NOT own the individual pictures used ^^

i plan to make more edits whenever i can during study breaks (because exams are so annoying <3) but yea! pretty proud of how these turned out, hopefully the people in the tlos fandom agree and i’ve done the characters justice. some of the characters have lil backstory references in their moodboards which was fun to add in ^^

i am..a little annoyed now that i put ‘mother goose’ instead of just like ‘lucy goose’ or smth cause now it looks a little odd but oh well- what’s done is done. anyways, till the next post (which…might be soon who knows lol <33)

How each of the fair council members test their pens:

Brystal: Flips the corner of the page and draws in circles till the ink starts flowing.

Skylene: tests it on the palm of her hand.

Emerelda: draws up and down in a straight line then turns the line into a word so you can’t tell.

tangerina: draws a circle on the top corner of the paper.

Lucy: she either doesn’t do it or scribbles all over the place till the pen starts working.

Xanthous: Also draws on the back till the pen starts working.

WHY XANTHOUS SO NEGLECTED

I'm not saying that Chris Colfer is a bad writer by any means, but the fact that the first time we meet Xanthous in ATOM he's on his way to kill himself after being physically and mentally abused his entire life, and attempted again in the third book is completely brushed over and reduced too a game of skeleton in the closet or a small "I think I'm gay and I just didn't know cus my dads a bich" moment in the motel is a crime.

Also him and Elrick's relationship. So rushed, no depth whatsoever, terrible. I love the ship with all my heart and the two hold a special place in my mind 24/7, but the way they were played out in the book sucked ass. They way they meet is super cute, but right of the bat Elrick and Xanthous skip any sort of awkwardness and Elrick starts calling him cute, in a very straightforward gay way, despite the previous chapter featuring Xanthous being about how careful "people like him" have too be because of the homophobia that exist in the current world. Elrick seemed too not think of that at all despite his own father being homophobic.

And their ending is just a lame "let leave together even though I've barely just met you I'll go too literal hell with you" trope. Not like earlier in the book with the "Lets run away together just for sillies" which was great. Their kiss was also so unsatisfying, no development into the moment they just kiss. From them meeting to kissing to leaving for the pits of hell to live happily ever after and have biologically impossible children all happen within a day and a couple of after hours. Like ??? I don't mind the love at first site trope but WHAT WAS THAT??

Brystal and Seven got more depth the Elrick and Xanthous did, like WHYY.

In conclusion, we need a fourth book that focuses more on Xanthous, and a lil more on Tangerina and Skylene because they're also neglected after Madame Weatherberry kicks the bucket and becomes spirited emo elsa. But not nearly as much as Xanthous. Even if they all go Emeralda treatment that would've been fine. Lucy carried the entire book no questions though but I don't need everyone too have that level of swag.

Now, these are the only ones I'll be sharing because yk so enjoy:

Brystal Evergreen

– She's bisexual :))

– Her wand reminds her a lot of Madame Weatherberry. (Don't tell me Brystal didn't see her as a mother figure.)

– Bubbles are very connected to her childhood, it's like an important symbol to her.

– She’s a sentimental person. The small little gifts her friends make for her are kept in a special area and she makes sure they're kept safe.

(A couple of these headcannons are from other folks but yk.)

Lucy Goose

– She definitely likes theatre and musicals. She's memorized the entire lyrics to all of her favorite musicals.

– She just yells extremely random words (or just screams) whenever she feels like it (which is a lot) because it's funny to her.

– She’s a heavy sleeper. If by any chance her friends were unfortunate enough to sleep next to her, they’d either fall off the bed or get their blanket yanked away from them.

– She’s also the type of person to fall off her bed (or hammock) and still be asleep, maybe even the person who sleeps through earthquakes and stuff.

–Occasionally, she bonks people in the head with a tuba to "knock some sense into them". Her friends may be against it, but according to her, it works.

Emerelda Stone

– She’s nearsighted and actually has a pair of emerald framed glasses with her, though most of the time she wears contacts instead.

Xanthous Hayfield (can't find yellow 😭)

– Whenever he's lost in thought, he'll pace around.

– He has a pet cat! Lucy is the one who gave it to him.

– He likes flowers too! He often gives little flower crowns and metal dolls as gifts to his friends because he’s wholesome, except they aren’t that well-made at all. They’d have to put an enchantment on it to keep it from breaking. (They still appreciate the gesture though.)

– He really likes small critters like squirrels, frogs, lizards, bunnies, and mice.

Tangerina Turkin

– If angered (and she can get angered very easily), she will do absolutely anything to show her anger to them. She’s a very petty person.

– She's that person who's like "oh, you made that? 😒" then proceed to treasure it forever.

Skylene Lavenders

– Her favorite animal is a duck. I’m not going to explain. It’s just duck.

– The floor/pool in her room is decorated to look like a really nice aquarium. She has plenty of small fishes who live there that she keeps as pets. They all have names and stories too.

– She has a “little” pet shark that also lives in her room and it’s surprisingly very friendly. She just hangs out with him whenever she’s bored.

– She’s a crafty person, not the most skilled, but it’s something. She likes messing around with glue, colors, sticks, strings, and glitter, making a DIY craft for each of her friends and fishes.

– She has a large stuffed animal collection that she and Xanthous are building together.

– She usually goes and excitedly talks or rants about something to (mainly) Tangerina even though she knows or has heard about it already.

Elrik Elderwood

– He likes to carry Xanthous for fun sometimes, akin to how he did when they first met. He goes into the room and just picks him up because he can.

– He does some trolling with Lucy from time to time, mainly to the demons and the Fairy Council.

General

– They made little rainbow friendship bracelets for all of them to wear. Even during and after the events of The Land of Stories series, they still have those bracelets and wear them all the time.

– They all have a book-reading sleepover in Brystal’s room every weekend.

– The Fairy Council have a special little place in the woods somewhere near the academy where they unwind and de-stress whenever they're overwhelmed. (They still do this in TLOS.)

i'm curious - when and why did xanthous become your favorite character?

for me it was chapter 8 of atom lol

Oh boy, alright this is where I really start to show my age haha. The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell came out when I was in middle school. One of my friends recommended it to me and I decided to read it because escapism was my only way to cope (😭). Well, when I got to the chapter where it showed the Fairy Council, I immediately was hooked on Xanthous. Solely for the fact that he was the only guy there. It kind of stood out to me because I was also the only guy in a friend group full of girls. Obviously it was because I was gay but that was back when I was still in denial and didn’t understand myself fully.

Well, I hyperfixated on this guy since it just reflected my own kind of situation. Literally like 2012-2013. Back then. Boy howdy, you wouldn’t even believe how I felt when I realized this guy was gay too. Anyway, as the books kept coming out, I kept requesting them from the library, and boom. Xanthous kept showing up. In book 2 he was there. In book 3 he was there. In 4 too for a bit, and then 5 rolled around and we got Conner’s off-brand, straight-coded, adrenaline junkie version (Blaze), and he came back for a bit in book 6. It was crazy. He had been my favorite character since The Wishing Spell. I thought he was going to die in book 6, but he made it out. When I tell you my heart was beating out of my chest you better believe it.

But, then. Then. A Tale of Magic came out. I was in college by then, going through the motions while having thought The Land of Stories was done until the sequel. When I tell you the amount of excitement I got when I saw my favorite character was getting an origin story sent me through the roof, I mean it. By then, Xanthous was a household name. My sister also loves the series and we had collaborated on a piece for the Book Hugger’s Guide—and it got in! (I tell this to everyone since they all get confused, but the name on it is hers because she’s older than me and if you were of a certain age when submitting it then you didn’t have to get parental permission, so she submitted it and you could only get one name on it so here we are. But you might recognize a bit of the anime/manga style that I’ve now expanded upon and improved. That was a reeeeeally long time ago anyway haha. I also did one for the A Tale of Sorcery Zoom Webinar and got it in there too, and I asked my sister if she wanted to help on it a bit, but all she really did was add some sparkles to what I had already done. Nonetheless, she still contributed a bit like she had the first time around. She doesn’t do much with the series anymore these days—but she and I were always kind of a team when it came to art back then.)

Also when I say that Xanthous is a household name, I mean that literally. Anyone who knows me irl knows Xanthous—especially because he now physically exists in my life. When I tell you this man has been the Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime password star I mean it. Literally. It’s always his name prefaced or followed by some random string of numbers and symbols. It’ll always have Xanthous in there somewhere. My whole entire family knows about this guy—that’s how much of my favorite character he is.

When I realized Xanthous was gay and basically had a version of the childhood I did…my world was flipped upside-down. Suddenly I knew wayyy too much about this man. Suddenly his experiences were my own and I felt kind of weird about it, not going to lie. I think it’s cool though how Chris Colfer actually came out and said he was gay and gave him a boyfriend (we also love Elrik in this house). A part of me always kind of…knew? That he was gay?? Like I could sense it with my gaydar through the books and their pages. You can smell it on this guy. You won’t believe how funny it was when I saw he had that crisis in the antique store scene in A Tale of Sorcery. Ah, that brought back memories for me personally. Except I wasn’t in an antique store, I was sitting down with friends at a get together and someone clocked me as gay and I panicked.

Anyway, Xanthous has been my favorite character for many, many, many years. I’ve got old art of him too, but I’m definitely not going to show it because it’s also art I made back when I was in the closet and trying to not let anyone realize I was a boy who liked to kiss boys lol. It’s a bit embarrassing haha.

But yeah! Xanthous’s character has always been a source of…comfort for me. I think he’s super neat and his character has such a wide arc of growth it’s insane. He’s also more complex than the others—not adhering to a specific style of character between the prequel and the main series. He feels more real. More human. More like how I do kind of haha. At first I liked him because I liked the idea that he was kind of like me.

And then he REALLY became kind of like me.

And the rest is history 😁
