Must Be Love on the Brain
Xiao x GN!Reader Word Count: 1.8k+
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I woke up at 2am to write down some notes. And here we are. I just think Xiao is cute, that's all. And apparently it's his birthday today!
SUMMARY:
Why was it always you who came to mind? Why was it always you who came to check on him? To bring him his favorite treat? ... Are you mocking him? Xiao decides he no longer wants you around. He doesn't like you. But Zhongli thinks otherwise.

The sun was finally starting to set over the horizon. The sky was bleeding away from its radiant blue into a bright hibiscus orange. Warm and welcoming before the freezing and unforgiving black night ruled over the world of Teyvat. Xiao sat atop a hill, surrounded by a plethora of silk flowers. They danced in the breeze as the Adeptus furrowed his brows in thought.
You had come to see him again at the Wangshu Inn, bringing him a strange arrangement of flowers you had collected from the sands of Sumeru. Your visits were not rare nor did they bring Xiao any form of surprise when he heard your familiar footsteps creeping up the stairs of the Wangshu Inn. So why did his chest ache when you appeared only to leave so soon to carry out commissions or requests? When your skin would meet his with a faint touch, it lingered and burned into his memory. It left him far more hollow than he had ever felt when you pulled away.  When you called his name, he would always appear with no need for hesitation. His polearm in hand, ready for battle… But you never called him for that purpose.
It was always something stupid.
With a cheerful smile, you would hand him a plate of almond tofu. With crossed arms, you would scold him for working too hard. With wet skin and clothes, you would show Xiao the amount of Hydro Slimes you defeated all on your own. With bubbling tears in your eyes, you would sob over how your weapon had broken and your lack of funds would be a troubling hurdle to overcome.
Xiao was shown a wide range of emotions. A spectrum of colors that could pour out of you. To your face burning with anger after fighting with Paimon, to the blue it would turn when he found you on Dragonspine shivering from the cold. It was strange. Why did you call him for so many reasons, none of them deemed important nor life-threatening? But even though Xiao felt this way, he never expressed to you that he disliked being called on for no particular reason. But he wasn’t sure what the emotion was that he was feeling when you did so. Xiao was annoyed by your behavior. How you brought up this burning sensation in his soul. How his ribcage felt like crushing the soft organs within when he saw you speaking with others instead of him. How he lacked even more words than usual when you were close enough for your breath to ghost his skin. How you walked through his mind with a hop in your step and a smile on your face.
You, were annoying.
Xiao looked around the grassy plains one final time before squeezing his hands into tight fists. He could not feel you in the wind, so you must’ve retreated to your teapot for the evening. The ache in his chest returned, knowing he couldn’t feel you. He knew where you were, or at least should be. But the feeling left him with a pit of discomfort. And Xiao couldn’t take it much longer. You once told him that talking about how he felt can help with sorting out intense emotions he did not understand. And with a deep inhale, and slow exhale, Xiao made a decision. He would ask for help. Moreso, request advice from someone he knew would have something worth listening to.
-xXx-
“Oh, what a nice surprise. It has been quite some time since we’ve seen one another Xiao. How are you faring? I heard that a certain Traveler has been visiting you recently.” The smile was gentle, the voice soft like the feathers of a white crane. Amber colored eyes were warm and familiar to Xiao who stood in the doorway silent. He had prepared himself mentally to seek aid from the God, but now he was left with a dry throat and clenched fists pooling with sweat. How did Zhongli know about your unreasonable visits? Have you resorted to gossiping? What else does he already know? “Please come in. There is no need for you to stand in the entrance. Follow me,” Zhongli gently waved his hand for Xiao to come closer. His much longer legs now striding further into the large structure. The scent of incense was thick in the air as Xiao watched Zhongli’s long ponytail sway with each elegant stride. “Would you like some tea? I made it right as you arrived so it’s still warm.”
The older God opened a door to a small room that appeared to be some sort of leisure lounge. A small table was in the center with a window opposite to the door. The orange colored sky was even more radiant as the bright orange painted everything in the room with its intense shade. Xiao eyed an expensive looking couch pressed against the wall beneath the window. Zhongli sat at the table and as his gloved hand motioned to a teapot on the table. “It’s dandelion tea. I assure you it’s wonderful.” The teapot was made of clear glass, completely see-through with water stilled inside and yellow flowers floating within. The Adeptus stared hard at the teapot before snatching his gaze free from the sight. “No thank you.” His tone was firm as he walked towards the couch pushed against the wall. “You are free to sit at the table Xiao.” Zhongli spoke up as Xiao quickly sat on the wine colored cushions. A scowl wiped over his features as he stared at the ground. “It’s a quick visit. There is no need.” His tone was short as Zhongli frowned, pouring the liquid into two crystal glasses. “I see. Then may I ask what brings you here? I cannot remember the last time you had come to speak with me of your own volition.” Zhongli was curious to know why Xiao would willingly come all the way from his usual place in the Guili Plains to Liyue Harbor.
Xiao sat with his back pressed firmly against the couch. His body was straight and stiff, a serious and unmoving expression on his face. Carrying this deadpan demeanor, he finally spoke. “I wish to ask you something. Advice if possible.” Xiao clenched his hands  into round fists atop the rounded bones of his knees. There was the feeling of burning in his chest. Much harsher than before. Zhongli was silent, picking up one of the glasses as Xiao’s eyes lifted from the floor to meet the God’s amber eyed gaze.
Zhongli appeared shocked. An emotion Xiao had seen from you, but not someone like Morax. “That was unexpected. You never ask for advice. Or, any form of help for that matter.” His tone was still gentle but now laced with amusement from the Adeptus making such a request. “It’s not that alarming.” Xiao breathed out, feeling a weight press on his body. It slowly became heavier and heavier the longer Zhongli took to respond. “I suppose I can offer some help. What is it that you need advice with? Perhaps it’s something to do with…” He trailed off as Xiao broke his gaze to eyeball the floor. “A person?” The God suggested softly as Xiao was silent. The lack of response caused Zhongli to raise the glass to his lips. “I see.” The older being hid his grin behind his glass. “Why don’t you explain to me what happened then?”
Xiao struggled to find the words he needed to say, his jaw clenching as the space between his eyes became burnt with fury. Zhongli sipped his tea in silence as Xiao released a frustrated sound. “I have never encountered someone more insufferable than the Traveler.” Xiao began, the memories he shared with you flooded his brain with a severity that felt as though he had been hit with a rock. “Calling on me for no reason, interrogating me with useless questions, bringing me things I don’t care about,” His hands unfolded from fists and grabbed onto his dark colored hair. “The sound of their steps is too familiar for my liking. The sound of their voice… I hear it everywhere…” Xiao trailed off as agitation was replaced with the burning sensation within his chest. “I don’t understand this emotion.” He grumbled with his eyes lowered to the floor. This feeling that makes his heart pump with adrenaline. That makes his palms sweat. That makes him forget what to say, resulting in grunting a response. “Although you describe the Traveler as ‘insufferable’, do you dislike them?” Zhongli asked and set his glass aside. Xiao’s eyes widened and he lifted his head, his expression looked betrayed. “No.” Was all he could say, and he spoke without hesitation. “Do you like when the Traveler calls for you? To ask you useless questions,” Zhongli pushed the glass across the table towards Xiao. “To show you things you don’t care about?” He asked next as Xiao reached out to collect the drink in his sweating palms. “I am unsure what you’re trying to say.” Xiao mumbled and held the small glass tightly in his grip. “I am only seeking transparency from you, that way I may aid you to the best of my ability.” Transparent. See-through like the glass teapot, filled with clear water and delicate yellow dandelions. “... I do not mind it.” Xiao breathed out as he took a small sip from the glass, the floral water soaked into his tongue and lingered there. It was as though you had turned yourself into the tea in his glass. Unsatisfied with wrapping yourself around his brain like billowing smoke. You wanted to infiltrate every part of him. Every part of his being. “How does the Traveler make you feel? Physically I mean.” Zhongli asked one final question as Xiao’s lips curled into a scowl. “Ill.” Was all he could say as the God nodded. He was satisfied with all of Xiao’s answers. “I see, that all makes sense. I know what troubles you. But, there is nothing I can do personally for you other than tell you what this ailment is.” Zhongli’s smile looked to be even bigger, his eyes glittering with excitement that confused the Adeptus. What was that face for? What did Zhongli know?
“What is it?” He asked as he started to feel a headache coming on. “Did the Traveler poison me?!” Xiao was starting to feel fury once more as Zhongli shook his head, a soft laugh filled the room like irontrunk incense, and curled around Xiao’s aching heart. “It must be ‘love’ on the brain.” He whispered with a playful expression as Xiao’s eyes widened, his face pale with shock.
The glass then fell from his trembling fingers, and shattered against the floor below. The strong scent of dandelion tea lingered, just as you did through Xiao’s soul.

who tf looked at faruzan and thought "She definitely looks like a character who deserves a gut wrenching backstory".
Before this,I barely remember she existed.Wth is that kind of backstory,I'd imagine she'd be in a lot of events or whatnot.
I expected hoyo to give her screentime as to show her arc of gaining new friends and family after that existential horror thing.
I expected a xiao treatment yk?
Idk,I'm over here brainstorming about all the chef kiss found family healing writing potential she can have.

is it just a me thing?

i just want to say something about xiao's eating habits (snow)
xiao does Not eat snow because it tastes like almond tofu, or dreams, or whatever. eating snow in china has a historical context of being a famine passtime, as eating snow simulates eating food. the voiceline about eating snow was meant to make people feel bad for xiao, actually. also with this info we can probably infer that that ancient god that enslaved him starved the shit out of him aside from forcing him to eat dreams, and since he was young when all of this occured, he still thinks snow is food.

Yang Xiao Long (RWBY) Propaganda
“Mommy AND Mommy issues. Her bio mom abandoned her as a baby and her stepmom(who she thought was her bio mom) died when she was little. She only found out that she had a different bio mom after her stepmom died. She considers her stepmom her mother as much as her bio mom. The stepmom haunts the narrative since she’s the main character’s bio mom, and whenever Yang sees her bio mom they bristle at each other like two cowboys in a Wild West movie. She’s got abandonment issues. There is also an argument for Daddy issues because after the stepmom died he shut down emotionally and only took care of their physical needs, Yang had to emotionally raise her younger (step)sister Ruby. She reconnects with her dad in season four, though. There is a song from the soundtrack called “All Our Days” from his perspective that’s about Yang, where he calls her his hero and says he’ll always be around for her(with the unspoken implication that he’s making up for her mom not doing the same). And if you really want a complete picture of her, we also have to talk about UNCLE issues. Ever since finding out about her bio mom(his sister) and him not telling Yang anything about her for years(despite knowing where she was and presumably talking to her somewhat regularly), there was a bit of a disconnect between them. He’s involved enough in his niece’s lives to deserve the title of a parental figure, and therefore qualify for Uncle Issues.”
“Her birth mom abandoned her right after she was born, her second mom went MIA (presumed dead) AFTER which she found out about her birth mom. Became consumed with finding find out why her birth mom left to the point of sneaking out as a small child into dangerous woods. Continued looking for about 10 years (until she finally found her and called her out on her BS)”

hey how are you? did you drink water today, you should. (thought im not one to talk LMAOOO.) i want to know your thoughts on this:
Vampire!Xiao
......
I am good!! I got high and bought a tub of Ben and Jerry's 'Half Baked' (badum-tss) which fun fact: I don't really even like ice cream for real hahah. I did drink water I had like three bottles and I plan to pull an all-nighter tonight to do some writing as I get ready for my sisters birthday tomorrow. She's so big now and I cried today thinking about it... My precious younger sister... Ahhh...
But, my personal thoughts on Vamp!Xiao...
I would like it in like a modern AU! or like... Our world AU? Like, he's the weird, gloomy, emo neighbor that the landlord warns you about. He won't bother you since he works a 3rd shift job. But... Leaving one night for a trip to 7/11 takes a weeeeird turn. I do like the concept as a whole? He would be a great vampire, like, the one who doesn't want to give in and drink blood. But being so close to him. Right on the other side of such thin apartment walls...
One bite won't hurt...

Q: How are you feeling? A: *coughing up blood* Never felt better in my life
Q: Are you dying of a deadly disease and/or are fatally wounded? A: Of course not
Q:Is there a world-shattering secret (about my life) that you aren't telling me? A: Of course not
Q: ...are you lying to me? A: ...
Hello everyone and welcome to the Lying Liar Who Lies Poll! This character would probably claim they were fine while literally on their death bed. Or they might have fun lying to people for fun and profit. Perhaps they just can't help it anymore - if they don't lie at least once a day they go into withdrawal.
Looking at the list of candidates, it might even be all three...
Vote to find out who's the most egregious liar in cdrama (affectionate)! Propaganda, call out posts, and write-in candidates welcome!
