The Islet of Asperger Type VI - oil on resin - 35 x 92 x 57cm - 2009
Islets of Aspergers — a solo exhibition of twenty-six sculptures in which he seeks to express Aspergers, which is a type of autism, also known as Asperger’s syndrome. People with Asperger’s Syndrome have no difficulty with language, but show extreme ability and interest on one or two particular limited subjects while repeatedly talking about them. This causes social difficulties communicating with people. This interest expands to conceal a portion of the body, and it becomes exaggerated. In the end, Islets of Aspergers reveals these hidden desires and shows the reason of the individual’s isolation as a ’islet.’ With each piece in the exhibition, Choi contrasts the roughness of desire in the simplified human body with only portions of the body emphasized in a highly realistic manner.
