Common Issues and Solutions with Honda XR650L Battery Placement
The Honda XR650L is a powerhouse on and off the road, renowned for its durability and versatility. However, like any motorcycle, riders may encounter challenges with the stock battery placement. In this blog, we'll delve into common issues associated with honda xr650l battery relocation kit placement and explore effective solutions to enhance your riding experience.
1. Limited Access for Maintenance:
Issue: The XR650L's stock battery location can make routine maintenance tasks, such as checking battery terminals and fluid levels, a bit cumbersome.
Solution: Consider a battery relocation kit that repositions the battery for easier access. This not only simplifies maintenance but also allows for quick troubleshooting if issues arise.
2. Weight Distribution Concerns:
Issue: The XR650L, designed for both on and off-road adventures, benefits from optimal weight distribution. The stock battery placement might contribute to imbalance issues.
Solution: A battery relocation kit strategically redistributes weight, improving the bike's overall balance. This modification can enhance stability, especially during off-road escapades.
3. Exposure to Elements:
Issue: The standard battery placement leaves it vulnerable to the elements, particularly water and mud, increasing the risk of corrosion and electrical issues.
Solution: Invest in a battery relocation kit with protective casing or choose a kit that relocates the battery to a more sheltered area. This helps shield the battery from adverse weather conditions, extending its lifespan.
4. Aesthetic Preferences:
Issue: Some XR650L riders may find the stock battery placement visually unappealing, especially if they are pursuing a customized look for their bikes.
Solution: Opt for a relocation kit that not only resolves functional issues but also aligns with your aesthetic preferences. Many kits are designed to complement the bike's overall appearance, adding a touch of customization.
5. Limited Compatibility for Additional Accessories:
Issue: Adding accessories like aftermarket exhaust systems or larger fuel tanks can be challenging with the stock battery placement.
Solution: A battery relocation kit often creates additional space, allowing for more customization options. This flexibility can be crucial for riders who wish to personalize their XR650L with various add-ons.
6. Starting Issues in Extreme Conditions:
Issue: In extremely cold or hot conditions, the stock battery placement might contribute to starting issues due to temperature sensitivity.
Solution: Some relocation kits provide options for using larger batteries with higher cold cranking amps (CCA), ensuring reliable starts even in challenging weather conditions.
In conclusion, addressing common issues with Honda XR650L battery placement involves considering a battery relocation kit tailored to your specific needs. Whether it's improving access for maintenance, achieving better weight distribution, or enhancing the bike's aesthetics, these solutions contribute to an overall optimized riding experience. Explore the options available and find the battery placement solution that aligns with your XR650L adventure goals. Your bike will thank you with improved performance and reliability on every journey.

Ride Red: The Bulletproof Honda XR650L Turns 30
The year is 1993, and your brand new Honda XR650 is just about the most capable thing on two wheels. Twist the waffle grip and you’ve got nearly 40 hp on tap from the carbureted 644 cc thumper, and the speedometer needle will tickle 100 mph if you’re brave enough. Weaving through the masses of Pontiac Bonnevilles and Chrysler Lebarons, you make your way to the gravel, where the XR will take you…

Azusa canyon- ORV area open but closes at 4:30. My beloved Rincon shortcut trail was closed due to landslides according to the ranger I spoke to. Bummer. That trail and my old XR650L stoked my love of adventure rides, except that ride also included a lot of freeway back home my current enduro conversions are not so fond of.

The Tennessee Vally Authority was created as part of the New Deal in 1933 to help control flooding, improve navigation and provide electricity. In 1936 the TVA began construction of the Chickamauga dam. They had to purchase 61,350 askers of land and relocate 903 families to make way for the new reservoir. As a kid I remember hearing stories of ppl sitting on their front porch with guns refusing to leave. There are still roads in the area that end at the lake shore. The dam was completed in 1940 and stands 129ft tall and 5,800ft long. The name came from the Cherokee people and is also shared by a couple local creeks, a nearby civil war battle and the island the dam was built on.

The Owens Valley in Eastern California contains a perplexing diversity of terrain. Crammed between two mountain ranges — both possessing 14,000-foot peaks that shoot up into the sky almost vertically — the entire region is an off-road riding dreamscape. Here's a quick glimpse of some of the fantastic terrain and incredible landscapes we encountered astride the legendary ‘86 Honda XR600R, on our ride through the Owens Valley.

Maintenance Tips for Your XR650L Oil Filter Cover
The XR650L is a legendary dual-sport motorcycle known for its rugged performance and versatility. If you're a proud owner of this off-road beast, you know that proper maintenance is crucial to keep it running smoothly. One often-overlooked component is the oil filter cover. In this blog, we'll explore some essential maintenance tips to ensure your XR650L oil filter cover serves you well for years to come.
Why is the Oil Filter Cover Important?
Before delving into maintenance tips, let's understand the significance of the XR650L Oil Filter Cover. This cover protects your bike's oil filter, which plays a critical role in maintaining the engine's health. It keeps contaminants and debris out of the oil, ensuring that the engine receives clean lubrication. A well-maintained oil filter cover ensures the filter stays in optimal condition.
Maintenance Tips:
1. Regular Inspection: Start by inspecting the oil filter cover regularly. Look for any visible signs of damage, such as cracks, dents, or loose bolts. Even minor damage can compromise its functionality.
2. Cleaning: Dirt and grime can accumulate on the oil filter cover, especially if you're into off-roading. Clean it with a mild detergent and a soft brush or cloth. Pay attention to the areas around the oil filter housing and the attachment points.
3. Bolt Tightness: Ensure that the bolts securing the oil filter cover are tightened to the manufacturer's specifications. Loose bolts can lead to oil leaks, which could be disastrous for your engine.
4. Gasket Inspection: Many oil filter covers come with gaskets that create a tight seal. Check the gasket's condition for signs of wear, tears, or damage. Replace it if necessary to prevent oil leaks.
5. Replace If Necessary: Over time, the oil filter cover may wear out or sustain damage that can't be repaired. If you notice significant cracks, warping, or other issues, it's best to replace it with a new one. Fortunately, replacement covers are readily available.
6. Use High-Quality Covers: When replacing your oil filter cover, consider investing in high-quality aftermarket options. Aftermarket covers often provide better durability and improved cooling for the engine. Products from reputable manufacturers can be a wise choice.
7. Torque Specifications: When installing a new oil filter cover or reassembling the existing one, adhere to the recommended torque specifications. This ensures that the cover is properly secured without over-tightening, which can cause damage.
8. Oil Change Routine: Incorporate oil filter cover inspection into your routine oil change procedure. This way, you can address any issues promptly and avoid potential engine damage due to oil leaks or contamination.
9. Off-Road Considerations: If you frequently ride your XR650L off-road, you may want to invest in additional protective accessories, such as skid plates or guards, to shield the oil filter cover from rocks and debris.
10. Consult Your Manual: Always refer to your XR650L's owner's manual for specific maintenance guidelines and intervals. Following the manufacturer's recommendations is crucial to keeping your bike in top shape.
In conclusion, the XR650L oil filter cover might seem like a small component, but it plays a vital role in your motorcycle's performance and longevity. By following these maintenance tips and staying vigilant, you can ensure that your oil filter cover continues to protect your engine and keep your XR650L running smoothly on and off the road. Regular care and attention to detail are key to getting the most out of your bike and enjoying many memorable rides ahead.
