2022 Lexember: Tradespeak + Volition

Let’s take a break from Tepat and its writing system for me to work out and illustrate a feature of another language, spoken east of Tepat - Tradespeak.

What’s this “East Coast”?

Tepat sits on the continent Tiptum, and over the cordillera of eastern mountains is a long, irregular coastline. This the “East Coast,” or Amtom (which means basically the same thing). Languages

The East Coast is diverse, including members of 4 of the 5 large language families of Tiptum. However, centuries of mutual influence have formed a Sprachbund - or linguistic area - with all of them sharing certain similarities.

What is “Tradespeak”?

Because the East Coast contains many small states with their own languages, but closely linked by trade, they have developed their own lingua franca known as “Tradespeak,” which probably originated from pidginization of the central languages and grew out of control, absorbing everything it touched like the Blob. Aside from picking up bits and pieces everywhere, most languages have in turn borrowed words from each other through Tradespeak as well as directly from each other, resulting in lots of words that are similar in many languages but not in any consistent way, making this place hell for historical linguists trying to tease out the relationship of the languages. Furthermore, each state has its own dialect of the universal pidgin, which makes this all even more gooey and sticky, like linguistic monkey puzzle bread or whatever it’s called.

Volition

One of the characteristics of East Coast langs is what I call “volitionality.” (*I use this term with the caution that although I know some natlangs distinguish this, I don’t know what, or if there is, a standard term for it, and also I know some langs use “volitional form” to refer to something different.) What I mean is that these languages distinguish inflectionally right on the verb, whether the agent did the action purposely or not. In many languages this feature is fused with another verbal category, but since Tradespeak grammar is generally simpler and more transparent it is a good example to illustrate it. In Tradespeak, volition is optionally marked.

Tradespeak affixes:

kɬ- voluntary subject

tə- involuntary subject

Example:

tə-pixc 'He falls.'

kɬ-pixc 'He gets down.'

Another one:

tə-pt’at 'He dies.'

kɬ-əpt’at 'He commits suicide.'

(These verbs are not marked for person, and assumed to be third-person.)

As a result some meanings which might have 2 completely English verbs are expressed by one verb, with different conjugation - when they are distinguished primarily by the subject’s degree of control of the situation.

🐝Is it cuter if someone is openly complaining about how full they are or trying to hide it? - with tim he likes it better if hes open about his discomfort bc then its easier to know when he needs something

oh thats a hard question as i have a number of little freakies who i would consider to be some combination of Soft Warm Cute & Huggable but im gonna go with my man tim bc hes all of those things in equal parts [pictured right]
