Five years ago I drew the protags Ian and Cortland from BREAKS, which is an acclaimed romance/drama/YA/LGBTQ+ comic by local creator and artist pal Emma Viceli, and author Malin Ryden! Now Orbit Books have picked up the series and are publishing the book trilogy!! Book 1 is out NOW, with books 2 and 3 to follow shortly. I am elated for the creators who have worked EXTREMELY HARD over the past decade to write, draw and publish this comic for us all to read. Close ties of friendship and family are strengthened and celebrated in the fourth comic in the 15-part Seeds of Spring series. As Naguset's brother Mu'in prepares to be deployed, Naguset bonds with Mandy over punk songs from Chris, finding a moment of distraction and hope amidst harmful outside messages. Back in the 1800s, young Peter is reunited with his beloved brother, forges friendships, and defines success for himself in choosing his path after graduation.

Sigh. I was originally pumped when I heard there would be a Clementine graphic novel. I love the Walking Dead games, the stories and characters are excellent. I even got a digital review copy thanks to edelweiss. But then the core premise of these books involves Clementine leaving AJ and she would never. So I knew going in that they couldn't live up to potential. I didn't hate it as much as I could have, but I didn't really like it either. The entire premise was flawed which hurt my opinion of even the things I liked. Some of the new characters were decent though (especially Ricca). The story was decent enough, if I thought of it as an AU. Almost none of it feels that fleshed out, it moves too fast (while also dragging!) to feel like we really explore the characters or story. The art style was cute enough, but parts of it were indecipherable and I struggled to tell what was happening on page. I did love learning what Clementine named her prosthetic, and I actually was pretty okay with how disability was handled in the story. I'm so disappointed though that I couldn't honestly recommend it.
