i think yellowjackets is fun because the two timelines allows the show to recontextualize itself constantly. like how adult misty’s devotion to adult natalie in s1 feels a bit misplaced especially considering adult nat acts like she can’t stand misty. misplaced, until you see teen misty save teen natalie from death in 2x08. until you see misty’s face the moment it became clear it wasn’t going to be nat, but javi. until you see that the wilderness didn’t choose in the middle of that lake. misty did. she always picks the choice that will save natalie in s1 because she chose natalie in 2x08 and paid the price of a life for it. and i just think that’s neat.

I’ll never be over how Shauna sees the group’s faces in her dream after they’ve eaten the baby. It’s such a fascinating insight into Shauna’s mind to me. Lottie looks practically childlike. She makes an attempt to wipe her face but not in an ashamed way, it’s simply a casual motion to wipe her lip, as if the actual amount of blood on her face doesn’t exist to her and it’s simply a crumb that rests on her lip. It seems like she has orchestrated this, but she’s unaware what they are really doing, as if she doesn’t understand this is Shauna’s BABY.

Akilah looks terrified, she’s sorry she’s doing this but she can’t help it. She’s almost about to throw up thinking about what she’s doing but she’s just so hungry she can’t help but eat what’s been given.

Van nearly snarls like a fucking wolf which I find FASCINATING. Van has never been aggressive toward Shauna, but she IS a strong ally to Lottie, and that seems to be enough of a threat to Shauna.

Taissa is very clearly being seen as her sleepwalking self, with the quick movements, sloppy chewing, and animalistic stare. Natalie is desperately ashamed of what she has done, trying to wipe away the evidence and so sorry that she has betrayed Shauna in such a way but she just couldn’t stop herself. It’s as if Shauna knows neither of them could be consciously capable of this, even in her dream. These two have been her strongest allies and Shauna doesn’t believe they would willingly hurt her in this way, but it could still happen somehow. Natalie also has the least amount of blood on her, like she was the last to dig in, or ate the least and most carefully. Being as respectful as possible until the last second.

And Misty. Misty looks at Shauna as if she wants to worship her. She looks for a moment like “ah shit, listen Shauna I know this looks bad” but the most prominent message from her expression is as if she is grateful to Shauna for feeding them again. Shauna has been the one keeping them fed for so long. First with Jackie, and now her baby.

not to be a soccer nerd but thinking about team dynamics and uniform numbers and how jackie wears a 9 bc she’s a striker - obvs that’s the striker’s number. and shauna has the 6 which is (narratively a foil to jackie) and also defending midfielder. tai is the 8 which is ur classic box to box midfielder like jus well rounded support… nat is 7 a winger/backup striker. lottie is 5, centre back sweeper…. the implications. van as the goalie….. should i write thr whole post bc like i’m going insane and i don’t think ppl talk about their team positions enough

i’m still thinking about callie sadecki. i just love her so much. i’m thinking about her overwhelming empathy for her mom and how it’s always been there—the little tremor in her voice and the way she glances away when she asks “is dad working late again? ...i’m sorry” in the pilot. she bitches at her mom plenty but the second she gets high in blood hive she’s literally crying in the club because she recognizes at this core level that her mom, too, was just a girl once, and she lost people, and she didn’t start out as a bad person, and this isn’t who she would have been otherwise. 

callie begins season 2 by calling her mom selfish, saying shauna doesn’t care about her, and callie’s so horrified over what shauna did to adam, but by the finale, callie has shot lottie to protect her mom. “get away from my mom” and callie doesn’t sound powerful or in control or badass, she sounds so so scared, it’s all but a sob, no “get the fuck away from my mom,” she sounds like a kid. still holding the gun pointed at lottie, she says, “mom?” waiting for shauna to tell her what to do. waiting to hear that it’s okay. 

am i like mom? retaking her trig test, solving the crossword without so much as thinking about it, conjuring fake tears at the same time as her mom with a single police station wall between them because she’s that intent on sticking by her mom’s side, even though they’d been arguing walking in minutes before. am i like mom? holding the gun that shauna stole, shaking, she just shot a stranger and she’s maybe going to again, they were going to kill you, and the unspoken implication that if callie has to kill them instead to keep that from happening, then maybe she will. 

shauna, who never let herself get truly close to callie for fear that callie might die. shauna, who would be dead right now if it weren’t for her kid.

Anyway I love when things are narratively unsatisfying. I love when people are characterized well and interesting and die for stupid reasons without finishing their arc. I love tragedy I love when none of it mattered I love surviving a plane crash and finally making someone see how fucked up the thing they did is and then falling off the toilet cliff with the shit bucket I love friendship ending pregnancy that results in a stillbirth I love unkillable teenage lesbians who get cancer in their forties I love surviving a plane crash but not surviving girlhood I love tragedy

pouring one out for jackie taylor tonight. these first two seasons, it has been her that moved the story along. they would have never made it to nationals or gotten on that plane without her scoring that goal in s1, her death started the cannibalism in s2. hard to see how that trend can continue in s3 now that she’s super mega dead. she’ll continue to haunt the narrative, but we’re officially at the end of a girlfail era 😔✊
