Honestly my one of my favorite things about Yellowjackets is that it’s like the “high-school-stereotype turns out to be more than that” trope, but turned up to such a grotesque and horrifying degree. Like-

“Turns out the popular girl has her own weaknesses/insecurities!” Yeah and she literally freaking dies for them.

“Wow! The rebellious punk girl we were all afraid of is actually really nice!” So let’s turn her into this borderline divine figure, entrust her with our lives and follow her deep into the wilderness as she’s the last one to hold onto a sliver of humanity and not turn into some primal, depraved animal.

“Oh! So the weird childish kid is actually capable of things!” Mm hmm, capable of MURDER. Capable of holding the cards of life and death itself in her little hands and becoming so needed yet so feared.

“That strange quiet kid finally finds her voice!” AND STARTS A CULT.

I could keep going but just- Y’all that retro 90’s energy of exploring the high school trope coupled with the utter gruesome obscenity that is their situation… It so does it for me. Everyone’s become so suffocated in their little boxes that the only way to break out is in a dramatic frenzy where they start killing each other. Glorious.

i saw this reposted on pinterest last night and no joke have been thinking abt it non-stop since. i think jackie was going to be hurt as long as the person shauna was having sex with wasn't her. she doesn't frame it that way in her mind but their codependency becomes sexual in an inherent way because they literally cannot do anything without the other. shauna tries to break away from this by having sex with jeff but it doesn’t work — because even this rebellion is at its core about jackie. she has sex with jeff to gain some agency, to tell herself jackie doesn't control her life, but she does. and this isn't jackie's fault — jackie controls shauna through shauna's own obsession with and dependency on her. in the end, shauna didn’t have sex without jackie — she was thinking about her the whole time.

“I don’t even like soccer!”

My personal take on this scene is that Shauna is trying to express to Jackie, regardless of if Shauna realizes shes doing it ,

that Jackie is so consumed by her own feelings to ever recognize everything that Shauna has done for her and how much she truly has sacrificed,

while also simultaneously saying “you can’t see how in love with you I am, let alone the true reason why I would ever sleep with Jeff”.

Immediately after Jackie claims that she knows Shauna does not have feelings for Jeff, And Shauna replied, “How would you know?” Shauna goes on to say;

“You tell me what to wear, who to hook up with, I don’t even like soccer!”

… As if to say “you tell me who to hook up with, and I don’t even like boys, I like you.”

Another thing, Shauna only plays soccer because of Jackie? Meaning Shauna would have never been in that plane crash, never would have ended up stranded in the wilderness, and would have never been the reason jackie died.

Jackie is too caught up in her own shit to realize that Shauna does not even like soccer, she likes Jackie.

Shauna has sacrificed herself time and time again for jackie, just to be close to her in any way possible, without ruining their friendship.

And yet even if she hadn’t been on the soccer team, and she hadn’t done everything jackie said at all, she probably would have rather been in the plane crash with her.

Thats how much she loves jackie.
