Happy 20th anniversary to Yoshi Touch & Go!

Released on the original Nintendo DS in 2005, this was my first endless runner type game and my first introduction to the Yoshi universe, meeting characters like Baby Mario and Luigi, Kamek, and many (now familiar) enemies.

In my opinion, the soundtrack is the MVP. Comprised of arrangements of past tunes as well as original compositions, the OST perfectly captures the sense of joviality and adventure the Yoshi series is known for!

game nights with your boyfriend and his friends might not happen often; but once they all come together and get the event date set?

oh, a (good) chaos will definitely ensue.

“goddamit—chan hyung! get your eyes on the game!”

“yeah! go get it, seungmin!”

“felix you bronze—step on it! catch up!”

a collective of cheers and disappointed groans were imminent as soon as yoshi, seungmin’s character of the night, crosses the finish line; leaving dry bowser and baby mario—which respectively belongs to han and chan, in second and third place. If you didn’t know any better, you would have thought the boys were just competing in some major mario kart competition.

“­wah chan hyung—you’re seriously so bad at this!” changbin loudly protests—to which you genuinely thank yourself for pushing through with the rented villa agenda—while throwing his head back against the sofa in desperation. lee know, their other unfortunate teammate on the other hand, is busy pretending to box against your cackling boyfriend, having a string of ‘sorry’s falling from his lips.

“argh!” switching his target in desperation, changbin immediately puts his hands together and faces you with his attempt of salvation. “please switch teams with me! i can’t do this any longer! he’s so bad!” he pleaded, nearly earning himself a thrown nintendo controller on the head from chan if it wasn’t for your swift hands, snatching the heavy plastic from your pouting boyfriend. Well, not that you mind though, considering how adorable your boyfriend looked while he sulks.

“yah yah yah—changbin hyung!” seungmin intercepted—and if you know something about the kim seungmin, then his iconic multiple-hit comment is about to pop off. “no one told you to be so bad with rock paper scissors anyway!” the younger pointed out, a smug grin etched across the span of his face, “that’s why you ended up with chan hyung!”

“hey!” your boyfriend was the first to react, pointing at the smug younger one—and of course, it’s not changbin if he didn’t follow suit.

“yah! you prick!” huffing and puffing, changbin was quick on his feet as soon as seungmin stuck out his tongue, further provoking the curly haired male while he ran away—only to fish more of changbin’s loud shouts after the younger. “yah kim seungmin! come back here!”

series of laughter follows the disappearance of the two; to which everyone know by heart now, is also the best time for the rest of the kids to take their water and bathroom break—and alongside that, also became the best time for chan to finally take a proper look at you.

“you’re still good, baby?” the switch in his demeanor made you giggle as you lean into chan’s warm touch on your cheek. despite having witnessed the shift countless of times, the way chan’s voice became very soft when he spoke with you never fails to make your heart flutter. “it’s almost 1 am, aren’t you sleepy yet?”

“i’m good,” a smile follows your simple answer whilst your arms found their home around your boyfriend’s waist, snuggling closer to his warmth while chan lifts your legs to cross over his lap. “can last at least 2 more games, i think. besides, i drank some of the coffee jeongin brewed earlier, remember?”

chan’s exaggerated sigh along with his usual disapproving head shake ignites another set of laugh within you, fishing another pout to appear on his plump lips. “knew i shouldn’t have trusted jeongin,” he dramatically piched his nose bridge, trying to look as disappointed as he could. “he’s part of the bad peaches club after all.”

“i heard that!”

jeongin’s resounding shout from the kitchen startles both you and chan—causing your laughter and chan’s to grow in volume. “not sorry!” chan’s reply simply earned a grunt from the younger, not wanting to further continue the discourse while he’s busy arguing with hyunjin about who can get their hands on the last can of beer in the fridge.

“but anyway,” chan’s gaze softened as they returned to you, running his fingers mindlessly in your soft hair, “tell me whenever you feel sleepy, okay? we’ll go to bed right away.”

“i know,” an exaggerated sigh left your lips as you immitate your boyfriend’s previous antics, “this isn’t my first rodeo, you know?” you snickered as you playfully stuck out your tongue—which in turn only further cause the adoration in his chest to bubble.

oh, how he wish you’re all alone right now. he’d immediately tackle you into a cuddle and plant several dozens of light kisses across your face and neck—but he must resist. after all, he wouldn’t want the kids to tease you over something like that.

“gosh, you’re so annoying,” he hummed, lips betraying him as it formed into a massive grin across his lightly flushed cheeks, “think you’ve been hanging around the kids too much. i should keep a schedule for your visits from now on.”

“nooo!”

4 round of games and 20 minutes later, another wave of commotion returns as the race for second place—since first place has again been coveted by the representative agent of chaos, the kim seungmin—ensues between lee know and han.

“han jisung! step on it step on it!”

“lee know hyung! shi—why are you getting as bad as chan hyung!”

“yah! baby, tell—“

chan’s words immediately died down in his throat as soon as his gaze landed on your peacefully sleeping face—plea to defend himself from his kids vaporized and replaced with a soft thump in his chest. You looked so peaceful with your head resting against his shoulder—a massive contrast to the chaos surrounding you—and chan could feel his heart swell. you looked so cute; especially with your fingers wrapped tightly around the controller seungmin had just handed you a few moments prior.

had you been fighting off the drowsiness all along?

carefully pulling you into his lap, chan smiled as he gently peeled the controller off of your hand before dropping it directly onto hyunjin’s unsuspecting lap, startling the younger.

“ya—“

“shut it,” chan hissed between gritted teeth, easily pulling hyunjin’s focus from the chaos happening on screen and to you—who immediately nodded his head knowingly when he realized what’s happening.

“yah lee min—ow! what was th—oh.”

chan’s next target was changbin—who immediately received a slap on the back instead of chan’s quiet warning. it’s rather effective, however, considering outside of the two current players, everyone now has their eyes on you.

“keep it quiet—if my baby wakes up because of any of you,” chan eyed every single one of his kids, not even caring how severe the teasing he’ll receive by the daylight will be for whatever he’ll be saying next,

“i’m not gonna let it slide.”

Name: Mad

Debut: Wario's Woods (NES)

Whoa! This mermaid is Pissed! Though I guess "Mad" could just be a shortening for something beautiful and elegant like "Madeline" or "Maddison" or perhaps "Madwoman". Either way, she is one of seven bosses that Toad can fight in Wario's Woods, a drop-down puzzle game for the NES (and SNES, but we'll get to that in a minute) most notable for being the last officially-licensed game released on the console, a whole four years into the lifespan of the SNES! We've already gone over most of the Wario's Woods denizens in a couple of posts, but with the exception of the NES bosses!

The bosses in this game all play pretty much identically, summoning enemies and occasionally teleporting around. To damage them, you line up the thingies of the same color next to them, as you can see in the gif above. Yuppppp. She also appeared in Super Mario-Kun, where she is shown to be a shapeshifter!

I searched everywhere for more, but since Super Mario-Kun is apparently both very poorly archived and approximately three infinities long, here's some highlights courtesy of her Super Mario Wiki page! Wario has enthralled her by poisoning the lake she resides in, and after a fight, Mario and co. cure her by....... having Yoshi drink and subsequently urinate her out. Turns out this mermaid really was Pissed after all I guess.

Anyway, after that, her true form is revealed: a big fat anthropomorphic fish in a dress. If you don't think she's just as beautiful, get out of my sight. That's where I’d leave off the post normally, but as you may have noticed, we haven't yet touched on the SNES release of Wario's Woods. This brings us to the second half of the post...

Debut: Wario's Woods (SNES)

Finally, someone calls Toad out on his trademark foolhardiness! Yes, Wario's Woods (SNES) includes a mermaid boss just like its NES counterpart. The odd thing here to me is not just that they went to the trouble of making a unique character that still sticks so close to Mad's design rather than outright cutting and pasting her into WW(SNES); but that of WW(SNES)'s seventeen non-Wario bosses, only one of them seems to bear any similarity to WW(NES)'s six.

Why go to the trouble of designing unique boss casts across both releases? Why not just distribute WW(NES)'s comparatively scanty lineup into WW(SNES)'s, which is almost three times as large? I mean, as a writer for a blog which hinges around novel and bizarre designs in the Mario franchise, I should really be thankful, but from a development standpoint it is just so odd! Especially considering both versions were designed and released concurrently! I think the most likely explanation here is poor coordination between design teams, though they did still have one member in common, so who's to say?

Anyway, all of that is to say that the circumstances surrounding Aqualea's conception are kind of infinitely more interesting than her design itself. Sorry, Aqualea! Although my sapphic sensibilities make it pretty hard to write you off completely, your cute-girl-ness can only get you so far, and novelty is unfortunately very much not on your side here.

Above, you can see how the boss gameplay differs from WW(NES). Instead of taking place on a single field, it now takes place across two, as is more traditional for competitive drop-down puzzle games. I really enjoy the unique SMB2(USA)-style sprite sets every boss has for this purpose. Seems like a good opportunity for a very niche ROM hack, if you ask me!

Every boss is also given a unique "lose" sprite for when you've defeated them. These are usually just a given boss's face in a distraught expression, but Aqualea is exceptional in that regard. I will now leave you with what is, in my opinion, the single most charming lose sprite of any boss in Wario's Woods (SNES):

Baking a Cake With The 64 Fighters(+ Unlockables)

Mario:

Baking a cake with Mario is an absolute joy ride. His enthusiasm is infectious as he hums Italian tunes and expertly guides you through the recipe. He’s a natural in the kitchen, treating it like an art form(From Princess Peach's Influence), but also leaving room for fun. He’s constantly taste-testing the batter and frosting with a wink, saying it’s "important to get it just-a right!" You both work seamlessly, though sometimes he gets a bit distracted when he starts tossing dough in the air like he’s flipping a pizza. In the end, the cake is flawless, and Mario proudly presents it as if you’ve both created a masterpiece together.

Yoshi:

Yoshi is incredibly eager to help, though a little clumsy in the kitchen. He loves tasting everything as you go along, sometimes sticking his tongue out too far and accidentally eating part of the ingredients. Despite this, his positive energy keeps you both laughing the entire time. You’ll have to keep an eye on him, though—leave the sugar alone for too long, and Yoshi will have eaten half of it. But once the cake is baked, Yoshi is so excited that he does a little happy dance, making the entire experience heartwarming and full of smiles.

Donkey Kong(DK):

Donkey Kong is surprisingly gentle in the kitchen despite his large frame, rowdyness and strength. He’s determined to help, though you’ll notice he can’t resist tossing bananas into the mix, even if it’s not a banana cake. You work together to mix the ingredients, with DK carefully following your instructions while occasionally sneaking bites of bananas and batter. His favorite part is the decorating—he insists on using extra bananas on top as garnish. In the end, the cake might not be traditional, but it’s definitely delicious and full of DK’s quirky charm.

Link:

Baking with Link is a quiet but calming experience. He’s not too much of a talker, but he follows your instructions with sharp precision, taking everything seriously. He might be a bit unsure about how to bake at first, but once he gets the hang of it, he’s fully focused. You share peaceful moments while mixing the batter and frosting, occasionally exchanging soft smiles. He takes care in every step, as if baking the cake is a mission. When it’s time to decorate, you both enjoy adding personal touches, making the final product as charming as it is delicious.

Samus:

Baking with Samus is efficient and organized(plus you get to see her out of her suit for a while...or at least her beautiful blonde hair as she doesn't have her helmet on). She’s precise with every measurement and action, turning the cake-baking process into a well-structured mission. While she’s not particularly emotional about the process, she surprises you with little moments of fun, like using her arm cannon to quickly whisk the batter or heat the oven. The end result is a cake that’s not only delicious but also expertly crafted. Samus might not be super expressive, but the small smile she gives when she sees the finished cake tells you she enjoyed the experience more than she lets on.

Fox:

Fox is all about teamwork in the kitchen. He takes charge but lets you take the lead where you want. You’ll notice him frequently checking the time and trying to make sure everything is on schedule, like a mission briefing. He’s fast but careful, and his competitive nature shows when he tries to perfect every step. Fox is also surprisingly playful, teasing you about your frosting skills or sneaking a bit of the cake mix while grinning. The cake turns out perfect, and he’s happy to share it with you, giving you a playful nudge, “We make a great team, huh?”

Kirby:

Baking with Kirby is pure chaos in the best way possible. He’s more interested in eating than baking, so you’ll have to keep him from gobbling up the ingredients before they even make it into the bowl. Kirby’s enthusiasm is unmatched, though, and he constantly tries to help—even if it’s just him licking the spoon or cleaning up the leftover frosting. Expect him to inhale bits of the cake as soon as it comes out of the oven, but when he finally settles down to share what’s left, "Poyo!" he’s all smiles and excitement, ready to enjoy your creation together.

Luigi:

Luigi is a little nervous in the kitchen, but he’s incredibly helpful and sweet. He often second-guesses himself, asking, “Is this okay?” or “Are you sure that’s enough?” but he’s so genuine that you can’t help but reassure him. You both share lots of laughter, especially when things go a little off track, like when Luigi accidentally splatters batter everywhere. By the end, the cake might be a little messy, but it’s full of love and care. Luigi is proud of the final product, especially since he got to bake it with you, and he happily shares a piece, blushing a little as he says it turned out great.

Captain Falcon:

Baking with Captain Falcon is intense and high-energy. He approaches the task like a race, moving quickly and shouting things like “Falcon Mix!” as he stirs the batter at lightning speed(whist making a bit of a mess). His enthusiasm is contagious, and you both end up laughing as he tries to make everything as epic as possible, even when it’s something simple like cracking an egg. The cake is finished in record time, and though it may not be the most neatly made, it’s definitely delicious. Falcon pats you on the back, grinning wide, “We totally smashed it!”

🌸 This man is blind and has been for quite a while, so as you aged together, he never actually saw your face for long. But, when he did, you would be surprised when he didn't compliment your face and frame, but rather your traits and how you were with your children

🌸 It was the day that you received a letter from Sora, your mother and your previous Oiran, that your husband finally understood why you preferred to keep your past behind you

"Oyakata-sama, we at the Butterfly Estate have received a letter important to your wife." Shinobu said gently as he handed the paper to your children.

🌸 Hinaki kept her smile as she lightly grasped the written-on note, her short {H/C} hair moving in the wind while her sister, Nichika, stood beside their father, making sure he stayed upright since you were gone for a small training with Zenitsu Agatsuma

"Thank you for showing me this, my child. You are excused."

🌸 Shinobu bowed and wished Kagaya good health before walking away, her hand being laid on her sword's handle bottom. Meanwhile, you landed the final slash against Zenitsu's blade, making it fly into the air and land in your hand

"Ugh! I'm never gonna get better..." The young slayer said, planting his head into the dirt.

"Your swordsmanship is getting better, Agatsuma. Don't beat yourself up about such a minor failure. Remember, I was once a Hashira." You chuckled.

"Yeah, yeah..." He mumbled.

"Lady Ubuyashiki!" You heard a peppy cheer behind you, making you spin around and sheath your sword.

"What is it you need, Mitsuri?" You asked.

"Oyakata-sama wished for your presence back at your estate."

"Oh, well thank goodness we finished our training up now. And Mitsuri, when are you free to cook again?"

"Anytime, my next mission is set to happen in about four days!" She said cheerily with her cute smile on her face.

"Perfect, I shall stop by after tomorrow."

"Okay! See you then, Lady Ubuyashiki!"

🌸 As you jumped from place to place back to your estate, you landed back down on the floor. Taking your old haori off and folding it to have one of your children put it away, you strolled down the halls to you and your husband's room

🌸 You caught sight of your husband sitting down with your four daughters and son in your room, recanting an old story he memorized long ago before their births. And as they announced your presence, he smiled and told them to go outside and play while you both talked

"Make sure you come inside before the sun burns your skin." You said as they walked off to grab their ball to play.

"Y/N... I have obtained a letter from a woman named Sora. She said, by what Hinaki said, she wished to visit you and wished you good luck away from the Entertainment District in Yoshiwara. I meant not to pry into your privacy, but please tell me the truth; did you work in a Oiran house?"

🌸 Sighing and sitting down in front of your husband, you grasped his hands gently, rubbing your fingers against the dorsal of his hand

"My love, that is true. But to a different degree. My mother was a courtesan in Lady Sora's estate. She had gotten pregnant one night and it resulted in me being born, due to her part in the estate, she had to return with me after a couple years. I grew up there until my former master, Sakonji Urokodaki, took me away with my mother's permission and trained me to become a demon slayer." You said. "But, I don't hate my past. Without that, I wouldn't have met you and had our amazing children. You are the only person I will ever love, I promise."

"I had no doubt in that, Y/N. I just wished to understand the letter more. And I am happy to meet a woman you seemingly look upon highly."

"I love you, Kagaya." You said as you kissed his head.

"And I love you just as much, Y/N."

❤️‍🔥 When you first met Rengoku, you were caught off-guard by how kind and pure of heart he was. He had approached you when you became a pillar with your fellow Sakonji-trained slayer, Tomioka Giyuu

❤️‍🔥 You began to hang around Rengoku whenever you noticed Giyuu was busy or needed some kind of space. And as you two spent more time together, the Water and Love Hashiras began to ask you both on what was going on with you two

"Hey Rengoku! Can I ask you something?" Mitsuri asked. "Go ahead!" "You've been hanging out with L/N a lot more lately. And you seemingly get red in the face when they look at you, do you like them?" "..." "Oh my gosh! You do! How cute! You guys would have the cutest children! I wonder if they're have yours of her hair colors! Or your eyes!" "Mitsuri..."

"Y/N... I noticed you've been around Rengoku a lot more. Is there any specific reason for it?" Giyuu asked you. "Eh- what do you mean, Giyuu?" "Every time you walk away from him, he seems to dim. As if he was sad to see you go. Like a child when their puppy runs away from them." "He may just be sad because his friend had something new to do." "Or he likes you beyond friendship." "...Well that was blatant...and Giyuu! That's highly doubtful. Why would someone as cheery and loving as Rengoku like someone like me..." "Who knows? I'm not Rengoku." "Giyuu!"

❤️‍🔥 Later that week, you and Rengoku were set to go on a mission on what was believed to be a lowermoon's location. And during the entire fight, he seemingly got more aggressive when the demon tried touching you

❤️‍🔥 The demon specifically had wrapped his long and stretchy arms around your waist, making you freeze and go into a survival instinct mode. You grabbed your sword and stabbed his eye, making him flinch away in pain as Rengoku went in for the kill

❤️‍🔥 The Flame Hashira brought you back to the Wisteria Estate and began to speak with you after cleaning up and he asked you why you seemingly froze up and acted on pure instincts as if you have done that before

❤️‍🔥 You sighed and curled into a ball, making Rengoku sit beside you and make a gesture to hug you. And, when you saw him, you jumped into his arms and started crying and telling him about everything

❤️‍🔥 From your mother to your past Oiran to the multiple men who tried to make you into a courtesan despite your younger age -you didn't even reach 18 at that time- to when you left and lost all contact with your mother, which with the touch of the demon making all of those memories flash back

"Oh L/N... I had no idea. I'm so sorry." He said, his voice slightly down from his volume.

"It's alright... it's nice to get that off my chest though. Thank you for listening, Rengoku."

"Kyojuro. You can call me Kyojuro."

"Then you can call me Y/N."

Hi. I just stumbled upon your page and loved the Rise! Turtles x Dark Knight Reader! If possible, is it okay for me to request TMNT2012! X Older Sibling Reader, where during Master Splinter was still taking care of the turtle tots reader was just a quiet kid when he found her in the sewer, took her as part of the family and she also helped took care of the turtles since she was a few years older. The rest continued as usual until the turtles were big enough. Reader being the supportive sibling but still strict when it comes to their safety. Very disciplined when it comes to learning martial arts. The turtles admired her strength and courage. Didn't become a full time kunoichi because she still an online college student. A reliable person to ask for second person advice after Master Splinter. Gentle and caring. A safe person for the turtles to vent and be with when needed. (Spoiler) After Master Splinter died, reader also become a guide for the turtles if they needed another perspective at heavy decision making like a big mission or something.
