hi!!!! this one might be too big of suggestion to compare but i’d love to hear your thoughts on lip’s whole time in college and/or ian’s journey of becoming an EMT

These are two really interesting plot lines to compare simply because both of them explore advancement opportunities that Lip and Ian both self sabotaged. Lip’s whole time in college spans from s4-s7 and Ian’s EMT journey was from s6-kinda to s11. Honestly just for that alone, I’d have to say that I enjoy Lips’s college arc better.

First we have the whole s4 plot where Lip is so out of place when he first gets there and that develops into him trying to balance “Gallagher life at home” with his studies. Then in s5 we see Lip being thrust into the Southside for the summer and missing the college experience. Plus he develops a nice relationship with Amanda’s father that could have helped him. I also really liked the whole credit card thing, when he didn’t fill out his grant papers, because that comes back in s10 when he tried to buy flowers for Tami and his pay is garnished!!

S6 is when Lip’s college storyline gets to be at it’s best in my opinion, and this is all happening at the same time as Ian’s “new self purpose” discovery plot line. Just to compare them in s6, I’d say that this is Ian’s strongest point in the EMT plot as well, and I really really love it for a number of reasons. But just to reaffirm my answer, in s6 Lip’s alcohol addiction mixes in with his college plot (Helene) and then we have the wonderful introduction to one of my favorite characters: Professor Youens! I’ve never been a fan of Caleb, but if someone did like him, you really cannot compare him to Youens I’m sorry. By the time s6b rolls around, Lip is a mess and, in my opinion, this showcases some of JAW’s best work on the show. He is still the arrogant Lip we knew and loved, but now he’s a drunk, and I think the way the writers explore his character is super fascinating (at The Alibi when he is kicked out of college, all of the argument scenes with Youens, his daddy issues, Helene’s picture, the sorority, etc.). Ian on the other hand is coming to terms with his diagnosis, finding a purpose besides being a janitor at Lip’s college (which is a whole other interesting point where these two plots intercept. Ian feels worthless and by the end of the season he is the one with a promising future where Lip is now the one with his future in the “gutter”), and Ian has found something he is really passionate about. I loved the EMT career path for him a lot, and I always felt that Ian always had a subtle “hero complex” and it was amazing to see him helping people because he really loved doing it. In s7 I also love the blend between Ian’s bipolar and how it effects his work, (plus Sue lol) and then when that woman dies Ian having to cope with it. Lip in s7 tries to get back into college and it is heart breaking when he is not allowed back, that is a far more intense story point to me and it causes Lip to spiral. Gay Jesus is what ultimately causes Ian’s EMT career to end and that was extremely unsatisfying (though it was compelling that his bipolar was his downfall because that was the initial issue with becoming an EMT in the first place). After Lip is officially done with college, we see how that permanently changes his life path throughout the rest of the series. Technically Lip’s college plot starts in s3 when Mandy is applying to colleges for him and we see how it could benefit him when he doesn’t. Now he understands.

In s10, Paula prevents Ian from helping people in the ambulance and that is hard to watch, but brilliant. Then in s11 Ian “took an oath” (“what oath says you can’t dump a body in a dumpster”? LMFAO) and while having the ambulance be his and Mickey’s vehicle was ridiculous, it was a nice nod to what could have been. I could definitely go into more specific details for each of these plots but this is my long winded answer of saying I enjoyed Lip’s whole time in college better than Ian’s journey of becoming an EMT. Even if Lip was separated from the Gallaghers during this time, he had good characters who popped in and out of his life unlike Ian.

You had honestly been feeling miserable lately. Not like yourself at all. Normally you were in your element at college, but lately, it was making you feel worse. You had been diagnosed with depression and it was a lot worse lately.

You had been trying your best to put on a happy face for your boyfriend and your students, but when you were alone, you would break down sobbing. You were a TA just like your boyfriend Lip. You had both had Professor Youens class which is where the two of you met what seemed like forever ago.

It had been a few months of dating and you didn’t want to burden Lip with all of your mental health issues. So, you opted to crying alone at night and taking your medicine, hoping it would pass. 

Since Lip was an RA, he had a key to the dorms, which meant yours. One night, it was bad. You had stayed in your room all day, not answering Lip’s texts, getting someone to cover your class you were supposed to teach. Lip had used his key to come in before and you didn’t mind. 

You hadn’t even thought of it being a possibility. You had let your phone die because you didn’t want to deal with it. You were on your ball, sobbing, trying to push through all the negative thoughts that rolled around in your head. It had just been a bad day. 

The door unlocked and you swore under your breathe. You tried to wipe your tears away before he came in, but it would be obvious no matter what. You had been crying all day. “Baby? What’s wrong?” He said, immediately closing and locking the door.

“Nothing. I’m okay.” You lied and shook your head, embarrassed for him to see you like this.

“No, scoot over.” He said, motioning. You did and he sat in your bed, kicking his shoes off. “Your phones dead. I’ve been texting you all day. I had to deal with fucking Carol.” He smiled, trying to make a joke of the TA that you both didn’t like.

“I’m sorry.” You whimpered, your voice trailing off. 

He pulled you into his arms, “Hey none of that.” That’s when you broke. “Don’t be sorry. Tell me what’s wrong. You can always tell me, baby. Did I do something?”

You shook your head, “That’s the thing, it’s nothing. I’m just stupid. I hate when I get like this. I can’t make myself feel better. I shut down. I’m useless. I’m a failure.”

Lip frowned, “Sweetheart, you aren’t any of those things. I know it may feel like that.” He rubbed your back in small circles.

“I have depression. I hate telling people. I feel weak. I feel flawed. I know it’s okay. I just...” Your voice broke again, “I’m insecure. I don’t know why you’re here. I don’t know why you stick around.”

“I stick around because I love you. I’m not just saying that to make you feel better. I really do. You make me so happy. You’re like this fucking angel I found who helped get my ass in gear. You give me purpose. I want to bring you around my crazy ass family...”

His words made your heart lift. You smiled a little and hugged him, “I love you, Lip.” You said softly, “I do. So much. You make me happy, on my worse days. And I want to meet your crazy family too.”

“Let’s do it then. This weekend. Get your mind off shit here. We can go to mine and stay for the weekend. It’ll be a huge distraction.”

You smiled widely, it wasn’t an empty promise. He did mean all the things he said. You didn’t doubt them because of him, you doubted them because of yourself. “Okay, lets do it.”
