“... They had a hi-fi phono, boy, did they let it blast Seven hundred little records, all rock, rhythm and jazz But when the sun went down, the rapid tempo of the music fell "C'est la vie", say the old folks, it goes to show you never can tell...’” #Repost @theartistshag with @get_repost ・・・ I just finished signing and numbering my new print edition “You Never Can Tell.” We’re having a print release and cocktail party at the West Hollywood Shag Store Saturday night, August 25, from 7:00 to 10:00 pm. I’ll be there to share a cocktail and sign things. It’s free and open to the public. @shagstorela @shagstoreps #younevercantell #batusi #shag #pulpfiction #vincentvega
JUNE IS BLACK MUSIC MONTH, #1. Chuck Berry, St. Louis to Liverpool. Recently I learned that in 1979, President Carter declared June to be Black Music Month. As an example of the lifelong learning required to keep up, I did not realize this ‘til mid-June this year. The way I’m posting albums these days is, I listen to them on random evenings for a couple weeks then group them (so they’re not strewn through my daily Covid Journal posts). Before the Floyd protests, I had been listening to African-American artists, of course, because of course; afterward I started focusing even more. Then came the revelation of the 41-year-old presidential decree. Anyway. Seems right to launch this sub-category with Chuck Berry. Until I bought “The Great Twenty-Eight” years ago I’d always lumped him in with “those fifties happy days diner type juke box” artists, but his hyper-literate storytelling and all those famous music bits—the chugging, the wild opening riffs and two-string solos—set him a mile apart from his contemporaries. This album I splurged on when I was mid-spree buying LPs a year or so ago. I just ...wanted it. It has “You Never Can Tell,” maybe his greatest song that isn’t Johnny B. Goose. And it has the colorful, veiled political reference to the Freedom Riders protests-by-bus on “Promised Land.” Also “No Particular Place To Go,” and a bunch of songs I haven’t basically already memorized. I’d say of the songs I didn’t know, the one I can recall best right now is first on the second side, “Go Bobby Soxer,” with an awesome drum fill on the chorus. #chuckberry #stlouistoliverpool #younevercantell #promisedland #noparticularplacetogo #blackmusicmonth #africanamericanmusicmonth (at Noblesville, Indiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/CB7EalQgrik/?igshid=3snxvjpr1c8j
