something i found interesting while rewatching su is how disconnected the gems were from humanity despite existing on earth for thousands of years and communicating with humans. with modern stuff it's understandable bc human societies are constantly changing all the time and as an immortal being who's been around for a while you probably cant keep up with new inventions that pop up every half decade or so, but even with basic stuff like babies; they didn't seem to realize that they're too young to be aware of stuff (pearl giving baby steven a dictionary) or that they're extremely fragile and really shouldn't be put up high on a ferris wheel by themselves.

even though they've existed alongside a good chunk of history and watched humanity develop and fought for it, they didn't take the time to KNOW humans up until steven and greg. like they had a barbed wire fence around the temple to keep anyone out. when they met greg that divide eased a bit, but it wasn't until steven came and they had to take care of him where they had to get in touch with humanity. and it's so interesting to seem it develop through the show, how they interact with more humans and get to know them.

Yeah it is so fun omggggg. I have been waiting for someone to ask about itttt. So imma go into detail about this so prepare for a long ass rant. So in this dr I added another diamond called black diamond (like i couldn't get any more gothic-) but she disguised herself as an onyx just like Pink/Rose did because they basically shared earth but didn't like that the diamonds wanted them to destroy it because they fell in love with the planet. Well fast foward a lot of years later and Black/Onyx found a human that she like really liked and at this time Rose and Greg were just starting to be a thing when my mother decided with my bio father that they wanted to have moi. So long story short she got pregnant with me and after I was born he fuckin left. Like I'm talking went to go buy cigarettes and milk and never came back leaving me with Pearl, Black Diamonds Peral (who we call BP to avoid confusion), Garnet, Amythest, and Rose. At this point Rose and Greg had been dating for like a year I think? so greg was around a lot when I was young and kinda helped the gems take care of me to an extent since he barely knew what to do but more so than the gems. Well Rose and Greg decided to have Steven when I was 3 years old and afterwards Greg kinda decided that he would basically be an adoptive father like figure to me since my dad left but I still lived with the gems after he and Steven started to live with Vidalia until they agreed to have steven live with the gems and Greg came around for visits a lot. Steven is basically my little brother because we grew up with each other. At the moment we don't know that are parents are diamonds but it shouldn't be long before we find out. The gems are basically my moms although BP takes the crown (forcfully) as my primary caregiver. I had heard her and Pearl talking a while ago about why she decided to and BP basically said "My diamond is who I am loyal to and even though Black isn't here anymore Zipper is hers and I will be whatever they need me to be and at the moment they need me to be their caregiver" Also yes I have shifted here and honestly it is so healing to be able to go somewhere where they are concerned about your mental health as well as your physical health. I love talking about this dr but I don't get to often so if you have any other questions feel free to ask

i know im not a steven universe blog but youtube knows i used to be a mentally ill middle schooler so i got recommended a bunch of SU songs and now i've binged the show again + movie + future and idk here r some of my SU opinions/hc bc fuck it why not.

opinions/thoughts

i totally think the Diamonds were redeemed way too quickly, and rewatching season 5 made me realize how god awful the pacing of that season was. they really needed a season 6 or like, split 5 in half idfk

obviously theres a difference between redemption and forgiveness, but I really wish that SU:F focused on that more bc it would've been a great internal conflict for steven but we only get like an 11 minute episode based on it (and yeah u could say that steven having mommy issues in Future is basically that but imo mommy issues r different than diamond issues)

pearl has the patience of a saint bc if my magical girl literal goddess of a gf/situationship left me for the 90's equivalent of a soundcloud rapper id never stop raging (yes this is partially a copypasta of that one tweet but they hit the nail on the head fr)

rewatching the series i love pearl so much i really see my younger self in her, especially w/ how autistic coded she is in regards to her feelings/emotions

i love seeing the different classic manga/anime artist styles reflected in each of the diamonds, like pinks design is so sailor moon vibes

steven shouldve flipped his shit before Future like, at least 6 times

i like to think after SU:F and he's had time to heal, steven tries to connect with the diamonds and not run from/suppress that part of his family, like he's not gonna be 100% w/ them but he tries to at least accept it

steven also connects with greg's side of the family! idk I like to imagine he spends a lot of holidays with them to catch up on all the ones he missed

steven spends his summers in beach city and every other part of the year he dedicates to travel (idk he never seemed the type to settle down anywhere for long, and i fw the wandering nomad type)

steven grows his hair out as he gets older, like young-greg length (long haired men > literally any other hairstyle), despite the length it stays curly

once steven begins to accept/cope w/ being part diamond, he lets his hair go pink (either by dyeing it or magic, take ur pick) with the mentality of "im reclaiming this color from my mommy issues, also i look cool af" (this hc is mainly based off of how I like steven's pink hair in Future. style was first, lore was second lol)

post-Future steven is 1000% more willing to throw hands and lose his shit but in like a coping way bc he knows if he keeps it pent up it'll be 10x worse

steven definitely starts one of those van life style tiktok accounts and has a bunch of cats as his van pets

Steven Universe songs as the Moomins because the two surprisingly coincide

On the Run- Little My decides to run away from home after she overhears Mama and Papa seemingly talking about giving her back to Mymble (she misunderstood). Little My is Amethyst, and pretty cross with the Moomin parents. Moomintroll is Steven, and just going along with Little My because "running away from home" for a day seemed fun. He just vibing-

Love like you - Snufkin thinking about Moonmintroll. It's just a very Snufkin song, imo. "When I see the way you act, wondering when I'm coming back or When I see the way you look, shaken by how long it took/I could do about anything/I could even learn how to love like you" COME ONNNN ITS SO THEEM

Peace and Love on Planet Earth - Snufkin or Moomintroll (or both) trying to teach Stinky the value of Nature and their precious planet. I love to imagine the song's ending as every member of the Moomin clan repeating the title lyrics.

Jam Song - Moomintroll and Snorkmaiden are on a picnic. They make up the song while eating the food Moominmama prepared for them. Little My is in a bush audibly gagging and Sniff is trying to find a way to steal their plan. Maybe Snufkin's there too providing the melody.

Be Wherever You Are - Snufkin shows someone the beauty of traveling and camping. That someone could be the Moomin gang (the kids), Ms. Fillyjonk, the Woodies, etc. Pick your favorite, basically.

I'd Rather Be Me (With You) - Moomintroll opening his heart to his sweetheart... I can really imagine Moomin in this song, idk. Now who he's singing it to? Snufkin? Snorkmaiden? You choose :]

Don't Cost Nothing - is it a stretch to imagine The Joxter singing this to a baby Snufkin? The idea that they don't need any big riches, or material possessions because they have each other and that's all he needs? I find the idea cute, at least.

Here Comes A Thought - Little My does something that makes her feel really guilty. Moominmama guides My through her emotions, teaching her how to deal with the situation. This is one of my favorite ideas from this list. And listening to the song, I can imagine it fitting so well.

Both of You - I'm going deep into shipping territory with this one, but I imagine Snorkmaiden and Snufkin as Pearl and Greg. Their friendship is torn apart because they both love Moomin, but Moomin chooses Snufkin at the end. And just like Pearl, Snorkmaiden was the 1st choice, eventually "replaced" by Snufkin. Moomin could be Steven, trying to get them to make up. He can't stand 2 of the most important people in his life to be upset at each other over him.

Comet - Young Moominpapa. Young Moominpapa. Young Moominpapa. I can just imagine a young Papa in this song, with all his dreams of grandeur and adventure!

Haven't You Noticed (I'm a Star) - I think Snorkmaiden would love this song. It would be her self-confidence anthem!

I Could Never Be (Ready) - another Papa Joxter idea. It's a lot of fun to imagine The Joxter struggling to learn how to take care of a baby Snufkin in the Mymble's house.

True Kinda Love - Estelle's voice gives me Moominmama vibes. And so does this song. It's just the right amount of comfort and softness and good advice.

Independent Together - just overall Snufkin vibes all around. Which might sound weird because of the "together" part. But idk. Vibes are vibes. And I sense his in this song.

Some of these seem like a stretch, but idc. Moomins and SU seem like such an obvious connection now.

Alright SU progress report 1 (spoilers ahead)

Got through episodes 1-29

Overall experience?: I’m having fun, it’s alright, I like it. It’s keeping my attention enough for me to be able to solidly binge it.

Favorite character so far?: Uuuuuhhhh Idk probably Amethyst.

Ships?: No strong opinions yet

Thoughts on lore/overall show atmosphere?: The show’s gorgeous (at least the environments are) and the lore seems neat even though you’re very… thrown right into it. I don’t think it does a good job establishing the world, episode 1 just kinda happens and you get no context, no explanation, no one’s gonna tell you anything unless you’re watching with someone, and I do not think that is good writing. Pacing seems a bit too fast, I know the show has a shorter individual episode run time but it felt like things really weren’t built up enough. Things often just kinda happen and very few scenes are given the proper weight I think they deserve.

Individual character opinions:

Steven?: He is… something. He becomes way less unbearable, but early on he’s very difficult to watch. I never really hated him as I know he’s a young, inexperienced character and he’s supposed to be a tad annoying, but god the second-hand embarrassment! I also feel like he is dumbed-down way too fucking hard. Like it often feels like the writers have a vendetta against him with how shockingly oblivious and idiotic they make him at times, it is so frustrating. He’s way more likable later on, in exchange for feeling unnoteworthy. He’s the titular character, the generic starry-eyed protagonist, and I don’t really care that much. He bounces off of everyone well, but doesn’t have a lot going for himself individually.

Pearl?: I like Pearl, she’s fun, responsible, and resourceful. A mom friend if I’ve ever seen one and often pretty endearing, if overbearing at times. It’s a very basic archetype but it works.

Amethyst?: I like her a lot. Her attitude is fun, she is VERY pretty, and she’s often funny and interesting. However often she can come across as an asshole and her antics can wind up not fun so- yeah.

Garnet?: Garnet definitely has her moments but I do not like how robotic she acts. She feels like she should talk more and express more, and her only super expressive moment being her lashing out and being cruel to someone/thing who could not hurt her does not sweeten the deal.

Greg?: Massive shrug, has his moments but can also suck.

Lars?: Fun to watch, easy to emphasize with, kind of an asshole though.

Sadie?: (just gonna sum this up in the advice I’d like to give her) Girl I understand your pain and you deserve better so LEAVE HIS ASS.

Connie?: She’s neat. Her getting her eyesight cured did leave a bad taste in my mouth, though. Not her fault, however.

Lapis?: I like her a lot and I wish she stuck around for longer. I feel like enough time wasn’t spent on her story, and the scene of her gem getting healed went by too quickly and happened too suddenly.

After observing how even the normal human world feels like it’s on something in this show and everyone seems like they’ve got something wild going on, I coined the term/saying “on some Beach City shit”, something to refer to when something/someone has the certain brand of weirdness Beach City does.

the character i least understand: Either Ronaldo or Kevin.. why y’all gotta be like that

interactions i enjoyed the most: Lapis and Peridot, Steven and anyone??

the character who scares me the most: Steven. Not because he’s violent or dangerous but because of the way he’s acting makes the audience realize how he’s been hurt so much to the point where he desperately needs help, but since he’s the one who’s been giving help to others from such a young age he doesn’t know how to ask for help.

the character who is mostly like me: Sapphire. I often quietly observe a situation rather than involve myself in it, and that can be either a good thing or a bad thing since I don’t really show my feelings in a way others can easily notice. And I, too, need an eternal flame girl like Ruby who will stay with me. For eternity.

hottest looks character: hard to choose between Garnet, Jasper, and Lapis. The reason I started watching su was that all the gems were so pretty.

one thing i dislike about my fave character: I think Steven should be more selfish. Like he’s so selfless and kind for a kid. He’s a fucking kid let him live a normal life… I mean it’s not really his fault but still

one thing i like about my hated character: Kevin is interesting as a character. I think he’s a really insecure guy who desperately tries to cover it up by acting “cool” and “classy” by his parents’ money. He definitely has his own problems, including sibling issues(which doesn’t excuse his actions). I mean he’s a misogynistic asshole but he’s also a funny asshole.

a quote or scene that haunts me: when Jasper forces Lapis to fuse together… and when Steven finds out about his grandparents(on Greg’s side) like the moment you realize both sides of your family is fucked up… ugh

a character i wish died but didn't: Aquamarine. Didn’t care about her that much and honestly she was pretty annoying :/

my ship that never sailed: I used to ship Jasper x Lapis(when I was like 11, please don’t judge me). This ship sunk when Lapis literally destroyed the ship they were both in.
