There's some TV show filming on campus right now that is, according to my students, a "period piece set in 2007" and my students were complaining because the crew kept telling them to put their iPhones away.
student: "It's not like iPhones hadn't been invented in 2007!"
me: "As someone who was around in 2007, I assure you that no one on a college campus in 2007 had an iPhone."
students: "...we thought you were like twenty-five."
(I am not 25. also the idea of 2007 being a period setting fills me with horror.)
then I gave them the story about being in class the day the first iPad came out in 2010, which, because I went to a ritzy private university, a student bought and brought to class the day it was released, then had to explain to the baffled archaeology professor what it was.
