I've always been kind of meh about the whole thing of using kintsugi as a metaphor, but you add in some metal staples and I am all in on that.

Remembering Jiro Taniguchi
Since Jiro Taniguchi’s death last week, writers across the globe have paid tribute to his artistry and storytelling skills. Some authors have been reverential, demonstrating a thoughtful engagement with Tanguchi’s legacy; others have seemed more intent on rehearsing old stereotypes about manga than in recognizing Taniguchi’s real contributions to the medium. Nonetheless, the sheer range of publications covering the story is astonishing, from Variety to Yahoo! News.
Not surprisingly, comics journalists have posted some of the most detailed, thoughtful assessments of Taniguchi’s work. Readers looking for more information about Taniguchi’s career will find Zach Davisson‘s biography of Taniguchi enlightening, while readers looking for recommendations may find Brigid Alverson‘s “best of” list a helpful place to start. Heidi MacDonald‘s paean to Kodoku no Gourmet (The Lonely Gourmet) and Joe McCulloch‘s page-page analysis of Hotel Harbour View are also worth a look.
In other news…
Kodansha Comics’ General Manager Alvin Lu explains why the company finally licensed fan-favorite Chihayafuru. [The OASG]
Brigid Alverson writes a funny, thoughtful essay explaining why Fruits Basket was her daughters’ “gateway drug” to manga. As she observes, “Fruits Basket is a teenage girl’s dream: The world is full of hot guys who think about you all the time. They argue about you, they defend you to each other, they elbow aside bullies, and when you’re not around, they talk constantly about how awesome you are.” [B&N Sci-Fi & Fantasy Blog]
Curious about sports manga? For a limited time, VIZ is offering a free preview of four titles: Cross Manage, Kuroko’s Basketball, The Prince of Tennis, and Haikyu!! [ComiXology]
In case you missed it: L.M. Zoller writes a thoughtful appreciation of Shuna no tabi, a watercolor manga by Hayao Miyazaki. Hey, VIZ, why isn’t this available in English?? [Contemporary Japanese Literature]
Mikhail Koulikov compiles his annual list of scholarly publications about anime and manga. [Anime and Manga Studies]
VIZ’s SuBLime imprint just announced three new acquisitions: Tsuta Suzuki’s A Strange and Mystifying Story, Scarlet Beriko’s Jackass!, and Akabe Abe’s Am I in Love or Am I Just Hungry?, a contender for Best Manga Title of 2017. [Anime News Network]
In his latest Screen & Page column, Tom Speelman critiques the manga adaptation of Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt. [Comics Alliance]
Jason Thompson takes a gander at Yuji Iwahara’s latest effort, Dimension W. [Otaku USA]
Scarlett Johansson still doesn’t get it. [Playboy]
If you thought The Rose of Versailles would be even more awesome with zombies, Jocelyn Allen has the manga for you: Kumiko Suekane’s Versailles of the Dead. The cover is swoon-worthy; the concept is killer. [Brain vs. Book]

Quote
Yokai almost disappeared following the Edo period, when Japan was swept up in a mania for modernization. When meeting with the Western powers, the country was embarrassed of its provincial passion for the supernatural. The government tried to sweep yokai under the carpet in favor of rational thinking and scientific advancement. As the military took over and Japan plunged into the darkness of WWII, the yokai were forgotten. But one young man remembered. Comic artist Mizuki Shigeru (水木しげる; 1922 – Present) was raised on yokai stories told by his village wise woman. When he came home from the war, he started working in the new manga industry, drawing the stories he had heard as a boy. His comic Ge ge ge no Kitaro (ゲゲゲの鬼太郎) became one of Japan’s most popular comics, and Mizuki taught all of the children of Japan about the country’s mythical past.
A Brief History of Yokai by Zach Davisson
