Fan trans VS official trans: The Spotted Seal And The Wolf

Sorry it took a while to get back to the comparing of translations.

When an octopus asks Legoshi and Zaguan to help her find her kidnapped daughter, Zaguan says in the fan translation that they are better than the sea police.

But in the official trans, he says that Legoshi is better than the sea police. It actually makes sense for him to say that since Legoshi has experience and training in how to handle this sort of situation due to his training with Gohin and experience hunting Melon with Yafta. Also, he is a wolf, he is pretty great at tracking animals down.

Oh, and not sure I ever pointed it out, but Zaguan's name in the official manga is Sagwan.

When they find the girl octopus... or what is left of her... the goat seller advertise it and says it is served with sweet and spicy sause.

In the official translation, he says "sweet and savory."

The official translation is less harsh. In fan he says a prevert would come dressed to a sea funeral but in official trans he says "weirdo."

Somewhat same sentence, the difference being level of harshness.

The words are more or less the same in both translations, but in the fan trans the letters in the octopus mother's speech balloon are different from the ones normally used to show she doesn't speak the same language as Legoshi. That's a very nice detail, so point to fan trans.

When Zaguan tells Legoshi what the octo-mom said, he says she told them to make themselves at home in the fan trans.

In official trans, he says she hoped they would enjoy the funeral ceremony.

Legoshi says the ceremony doesn't feel like a funeral in the fan trans, but in the official trans he says the ceremony is practical and unsentimental. The latter almost feels judgmental.

This isn't something where I have enough material to write an essay, but it's something where I nonetheless want to make it clear that this is one of the many Beastars-related hills I will gladly die on:

Zaguan is Beastars's Jar-Jar Binks.

He's a character from an underwater world whose primary purpose is to be wacky comic relief due to his strange underwater world customs and his lack of understanding of surface world customs, and it's obvious that somebody in the production chain really fuckin' likes him because suddenly he keeps showing up way more often than he has any right or need to (why is Jar-Jar now the senator from Naboo and the author of Palpatine's Enabling Act? why does Zaguan get a full chapter of denouement where nothing happens PLUS a Beast Complex chapter when much more established characters like Jack & the 701 boys, Gouhin, the Cherryton drama club, and the Shishigumi barely even get a page each?).

I'm sorry, but these are the same character, and they serve about the same level of narrative utility.

Sagwan's and other seafolk's view of life makes so much more sense when you remember orcas terrorize the oceans, smacking seals in the air with such force that when they land their skin tears and the only ones who can do a thing about them are humpback whales.

With that set-up this would be a group made up of random survivors banding together! And now, following horror rules…

Bill is the macho guy who is the first to bite the dust after an uncalled act of bravado.

Agata is the seemingly kind guy who quickly reveals a more violent, arrogant side. By the time his true past as a mobster comes out, he's killed in a jump-scare by the largest monster yet.

Legosi is, naturally, the mild-mannered protagonist who manages to make it all the way to the end, not necessarily in one piece. Ahem.

Gouhin is the actual though guy who knows a thing or two about what they are running away from and how to fight it --he's still offed two-thirds through.

Zaguan is the one who would appear to be the plucky comedic relief. But as this is not a Western Horror Tale he is in fact the true survivalist, who actually does make it to the very end in one piece.

Hello! I have been a big fan of BEASTARS for a while. Purely enjoy it. Something started to notice in Legosi is that he is able to deal with his own problems well (sometimes), but when it comes to Haru or others he is a little on edge or oblivious to everything. To what I believe, I think he doesn’t know how to deal or fix it in a way, so he does his best to try to fix it the way he thinks is the right way. I know he is growing and learning, I find it humorous 😊 what do you think?

Totally–the Legosi the Solipsist post is really all about this exact thing–he thinks a lot, but he’s not good at reading people. When he tries to predict other people’s thoughts or behaviors he tends to fill in his own assumptions and opinions.

I think one reason it’s caused problems for him is that he hasn’t met very many different types of people, especially at Cherryton. His departure from school has really helped him in that respect–he’d never met someone who didn’t appreciate his chivalry before Sebun, he’d never met someone from another culture until Zaguan, he’d never met someone completely malicious until Melon, etc.

He does often get hurt as a result of this, but I think in the long term he benefits from it–this moment in chapter 168 is a great example. His first interactions with Bill were brutal, painful, leaving lasting scars. But he came away understanding Bill, and the knowledge helped protect him.

I think that may be part of why the manga’s constantly featuring weird new characters rather than developing the existing ones–a main theme of the story is how we benefit from building relationships with people who are different from us.

Waezi2′s thoughts on “Beast Complex” chapter 16.

I have to say that this chapter is just good compared to the rest of Beast Complex. I mean, it’s good. But it is only good.

Maybe because it feels like I already read it.

Zaguan and Legosi meets an octopus when they are on their way home from the bathhouse. The octopus asks Zaguan for help since spotted seals are seen as an authority and as sea creatures of great wisdom. Some land creature apparently kidnapped her daughter and she asks Zaguan to look for her. The good natured seal naturally agrees to do so and Legosi offers to help as well.

They manage to find the octopus’ daughter...

But it’s too late.

Remember when the whale told Yafya that land creatures could eat sea animals? I think it is a nice detail that this chapter of Beast Complex shows us that there comes a new problem with it being legal to eat sea creatures.

We COUDL assume this was a black marked thing, but the way this goat just walks around with the food wagon either means that what he does is completely legal or that it is socially accepted to eat fish so no one cares how he got the tasty octopus.

Legosi is horrified by this(and disturbed by how amazing the smell is), but Zaguan is calm and does what he thinks is the most appropriate thing to do.

He buys all of the grilled octopus from the goat and eat the whole lot.

Eating another animal is not just a criminal offence in the world of Beastars, it is also seen as the lowest thing you could possibly do... unless you are a sea creature.

Marine animals are all about naturalism. they don’t use clothes and they eat each other if they are hungry. It’s not seen as something horrifying that a shark eats fish, it is what it is. Death is just an everyday thing in the sea world.

But there are still certain behaviors expected. Like when Legosi was about to get eaten by a shark. When he spoke sea language to the shark, the shark then decided that it would be impolite to let a land animal who knew his tongue suffer more than necessary, so he promised to eat him quickly. and here we see that Zaguan feels like that the right thing to do is to eat the octopus himself. His argument is that the mother will most likely feel better about a seal eating her than some random landlubber. It makes sense since that would mean that the dead octopus was eaten respectfully and not just half eaten and then thrown out. And Zaguan is a seal, so the octopus meat serves as nutrition for an important sage-like creature of the sea.

The octopus mother is grateful, just like Zaguan assumed she would be, and she invites both the seal and the wolf to attend the funeral. We get some more world lore as we see that a funeral for sea animals is held with a lot of lanterns turned on. The funerals at sea are about celebrating the marine food cycle since the death of a marine animal means that it has served as food for someone else. The lanterns are suppose to produce light for planktons that is the start of said food cycle.

So it makes even more sense that the right thing to do was for Zaguan to eat the octopus so she would serve the sea food chain.

So, as I said, this was a good chapter. But my problem with it is that it doesn’t provide me with something new about this world of animals on two legs. But it was very enjoyable nonetheless.
