Berceau de la civilisation européenne et lieu de rencontre de diverses cultures, la Crète est une île magique qui se distingue des autres au cœur de la Méditerranée. Sa place prépondérante dans l'histoire mondiale remonte à la mystérieuse et fascinante civilisation de l'âge du bronze des Minoens qui construisaient de somptueux palais en forme de labyrinthe à l'époque où Athènes n'était qu'un village. Dans l'Odyssée, Homère décrit la Crète comme une terre riche, peuplée d'innombrables personnes parlant plusieurs langues. La situation de cette île montagneuse, au carrefour de trois continents, fut un avant-poste naturel pour les envahisseurs successifs, notamment les Grecs, les Romains, les Vénitiens et les Ottomans, qui laissèrent tous leur empreinte sur la culture crétoise.
