to be real with you i honestly hateeee getting into fandoms for media that's still actively coming out (not like, star trek or whatever that doesn't count; long-running stuff with different eras and installments is in a different class than, say, a single book series or netflix show) because i was there gandalf i was in the voltron fandom in 2018 when s8 aired and it felt like the entire fandom collapsed overnight. and it rebounded eventually (or like, i don't really know the extent and activity of the voltron fandom today, okay, it's been a LONG time for me, but i see stuff kicking around occasionally) though never to the same level of engagement and activity, and i hate that. i hate the looming feeling of "if they really drop the ball on this last season or canonize some ship people hate or don't canonize one people love, the entire fandom will just up and leave and chances are i'll be left behind all sad and still attached with no one to talk to." it's a bad feeling!! and it wasn't JUST voltron this happened to either. (not to mention so many shows these days just have like Bad Fuckign Endings man don't get me started on death of the ending in the name of franchise) and it keeps happening also because apparently nowadays a show has to be actively airing to have a fanbase but once it ends and the popular gay ship isn't canon god forbid we ever talk about it again. y'know. i hate the content culture and like planned obsolescence invading fandom these days. it wasn't always this way <- crochety grandma voice but like. it hasn't always been like this! surely not!

it's why i'm so much happier and secure writing for stuff like idk, national treasure. or beyonders which is a wildly niche series that came out over a decade ago and still has a dedicated little fanbase kicking around. or star wars. established franchises or niche media where you don't have to worry about the rug being pulled out from under you (either because of an established, dedicated fanbase, or because the fact that the rug never existed in the first place) are so much easier to hang around in. and i wish more current media could have that kind of fanbase more often. i wish things stayed in the current consciousness more than, like, a year without a new season every year or two to boost them. you know?

Mother & Father's Greatest Sacrifice

Cybele and Mammon were from rival hives. Their hives didn't leave when Mother and Father's ancestral hive fled Silas.

It was by accident that Mother and Father met them. They were trying to find ways to close the border and stop the Zanna raids against their people.

Father met Mammon one day on the border. Mammon held no blessed powers but he was a master of magic. He made money for his hive and regularly brought his hivemates back from death to understand how they died.

He was invaluable to the hive but Adnai and he struck it off immediately. Mammon could taste the distant Chimera ancestry on him and so agreed to help him with his quest.

The friendship turned to romantic love fairly quickly but Mammon put a stop to it. He wasn't the ones his hive agreed to procreate - he couldn't go against his hivemates like that.

Adnai persuaded him join the "hive" he and Namaah were forming of Grisha/Oecrimi. There everyone was allowed to mate and love as they wished.

It took some convincing but Mammon eventually agreed. Adnai was pleased, he had found someone who thought of the greater good like he did. He had found someone who could give him knowledge he didn't already know - a feat that was so rare in those early days.

Cybele was from a different hive, not from the same one as Mammon or Mother & Father. She found Namaah one day deep in her hives territory badly injured.

She healed her and asked of nothing in return. Namaah wasn't used to that, everyone had a price - everyone had something they wanted from another.

Cybele had said she didn't want or need for anything. She had shelter and her hive, there was nothing Namaah could offer her.

Namaah was fascinated by Cybele and her way of thinking. She met her everyday for her patrols, wanting to learn as much as she could of this lifestyle.

Maybe she could replicate it in the hive she and Adnai were building.

It was Cybele who confessed her feelings first. She had been asked to marry into another hive. She had struggled with her feelings but finally decided that wasn't what she wanted for her life.

Her hive was safe, they didn't need her. But Namaah and this hive she was building did. She confessed ok her regular morning patrol her feelings and intentions. She and Namaah crossed the border that evening.

But the Grisha/Oecrimi were not thriving. The land was not conducive to farming and livestock. Mother and Father tried everything as did their mates.

They tried praying to the stars, they tried Rain dances and sacrifices of animals.

But nothing worked. It was as if the land did not wished to be farmed or fed on by livestock.

It was an old book that gave them the horrible answer. A sacrifice of not just animals, but of faith.

If Mother and Father entrusted the land with that which they held most dear - the land would care for them in turn.

Namaah and Adnai both knew what they needed to do - they went to their mates with the question.

Cybele and Mammon readily agreed. This was not as painful a decision for them.They'd been raised that the only thing that mattered was the survival of the hive. Individual lives and goals were meaningless when placed in opposition to or against the Hive.

Once Namaah and Adnai sacrificed their mates the land reciprocated as the books had said. Their people had food and shelter now.

Their people wouldn't starve anymore.

While the story has changed over the eons. The most recent retellings by angels and demons say that Cybele and Mammon didn't wait to be asked and sacrificed themselves without telling Mother and Father.

The practice of giving sacrifices to the land hasn't changed.

Babies born with deformities and other ailments are regularly given to the land as a sacrifice and with the hope of blessings in the future.

I’ve uploaded this one a week ago or something, but I just didn’t have the motivation to write a showcase post. I’ve been terrible in that respect lately.

Anyway, it’s not part of the NRP, mostly because I probably want to use this spot for a community lot and I’m not to convinced about the house’s style. That said, it is pack only, so no pesky stuff pack items that will be replaced if you don’t own it.

It’s an altered version of Zanna’s house from A Vet’s Life and it has yet a different version in Ben the Cat (although in that series I have not posted anything from this house yet). It’s fully furnished and has a kids room, instead of a cat room. The attic is reasonably large so it can be converted to another bedroom - it’s currently an art studio. The house is cat friendly and even has a small yard, with not much in it, but nicely fenced off. It’s available at a reasonable price (under 50 K), so with a bit of effort you won’t have to cheat to have your Sims live here.

Oof. The list has gotten pretty big. One of the big things is that they copied Keiji's design from a contest (which surprise surprise, got her disqualified from said contest), tried claiming she didn't and that she had made the design herself. Also asked about using a Gen 2(?) to design a custom, without showing the design, and threw a fit and said everyone was being cruel to her and tried playing victim when people simply told her that no, it really wouldn't be okay. (I looked at the thread, there were 0 rude comments towards her.) A few different people have her blocked, but she's used things that the block doesn't cover, and told people that she wouldn't stop when they politely asked her to. For one it was, stop throwing snow balls at my mweors, I have you blocked and don't want you interacting with my stuff, and she has bought multiple mweors from Zanna even after Zanna politely asked her to stop, and I don't mean one or two. One of which she bought from Zanna and then turned around a few minutes later and put it back up for double the price. Zanna vented about it without naming names or anything (and obviously mods had no problem with the thread because it's still there) and then the most recent thing she did was try to bury Zanna's vent after Zanna bumped it again because she bought more mweors, mods haven't done much btw, and Zanna kept bumping it, so she made a psa about spam bumping your topic, and then made it a much bigger psa 100% directed towards Zanna and a bunch of people called her out on in. That's all I have off the top of my head, since I'm just sitting in my car getting ready to drive home from work.

Shehu Isah Daiyanu Dumus has run out of cash and says he only has a few handfuls of cassava flour left to eat. The 53-year-old paraplegic man usually sells phone cards. However,  an extended lockdown to fight the new coronavirus in Nigeria’s biggest city, Lagos, has left him stranded and millions of Africans face hunger.

The Lagos state government sent him a text after the lockdown began on March 30 saying he would receive a food parcel. But no food came, and with government offices closed, he had no idea when or how he would get any.

“I am sure that if this coronavirus did not kill people with disability, definitely this order of stay at home will kill people,” he told Reuters outside a building near the airport where a friend is letting him stay.

Hunger and anger are building in Lagos and other major African cities with little or no social safety net to protect the poor from the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The World Food Programme says at least 20% of Africa’s 1.2 billion people are already undernourished – the highest percentage in the world. The combination of widespread poverty, reliance on imported food and price spikes due to the epidemic could prove deadly if African governments don’t act quickly, it says.

Under new restrictions in Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa, millions who once lived on daily wages are running out of food. Many work as traders, labourers or craftsmen in the informal sector, which accounts for 85% of employment across the continent, and must now stay home with no savings as a buffer.

In Lagos, three out of seven of its 20 million residents cannot always get enough food under normal circumstances, according to the Lagos Food Bank Initiative, a nonprofit. The 14-day lockdown, extended by another two weeks on Monday, has thrown millions more into need.

Food prices spiked as residents raced to stock up. Imported rice rose 11% and the price of garri, a staple made from cassava, nearly doubled, said Lagos-based risk consultancy SBM Intelligence.

Michael Sunbola, the food bank’s president, said his organisation was getting 50% more calls than usual from frantic residents. Some trek for five hours to collect food. As his team unloaded rice, beans, oil and cassava flour this month in Agboyi Ketu, he said many would struggle as the shutdown continues. “We are afraid some people might starve,” Sunbola said.

The Lagos state government is trying to help. It distributed 200,000 food packs during the first weeks of the lockdown and aims to give out 2 million as soon as possible, Agriculture Commissioner Gbolahan Lawal told Reuters.

The federal government has promised cash grants for the poorest Nigerians, and food vouchers. However, videos online show angry Lagos residents tearing apart what they consider paltry offerings. Lawal said those people did not understand that the aid was meant only for the most vulnerable. But officials acknowledge they are barely scratching the surface of the problem.

Mohammed Zanna, with the Nigerian Slum/Informal Settlement Federation, said desperate residents mobbed his truck when he tried to deliver food for the disabled on Monday in the run-down Agege neighbourhood.

Gangs of men armed with machetes, cutlasses and iron bars prowled the area as he sped away, dodging burning tyres. “It is a war zone,” he said, and the group can no longer distribute food in some neighbourhoods without police escorts. Police said they had deployed extra units to tackle the crime wave. Kenya has imposed a night curfew and forbidden most movement – apart from food – in and out of the capital, Nairobi, the country’s coronavirus epicentre.

On Sunday, hundreds of desperate residents in the city’s biggest slum, Kibera, stampeded during an aid distribution by opposition leader Raila Odinga. The next day, the government banned direct donations, insisting they go through government to prevent “unnecessary disorder”.

Kennedy Odede, whose charity Shining Hope for Communities works in Kibera, said the restrictions could cause more unrest. “Food is more important than corona,” he said. “The government must see how people are desperate – they will risk their life for food.”

In South Africa’s Gauteng province – which includes Johannesburg and Pretoria – the government is distributing food to 54,000 people deemed vulnerable due to a nationwide lockdown. But even before the restrictions, at least 16% of Gauteng’s 12 million people needed food aid, according to government estimates.

“The reality is that we underestimated the number of poor … (and) homeless people,” said Panyaza Lesufi of the Department for Social Development. Back in Lagos, Dumus managed to reach a state worker after Reuters gave him a flyer distributed by Lawal’s team. But he said he has yet to receive any government aid. He noted that the government is seeking private donations to fight COVID-19 as millions of Africans face hunger
