The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder Season 2 Review

The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder is a coming-of-age animated sitcom and adventure by Bruce W. Smith and Ralph Farquhar, two well-known producers. It is a revival and soft reboot of The Proud Family, a classic Disney series by Smith which aired in the early 2000s. This review will have spoilers.

Reprinted from Pop Culture Maniacs and Wayback Machine. This was the twenty-third article I wrote for Pop Culture Maniacs. This post was originally published on February 13, 2023.

This animated series centers on Penny Proud (voiced by Kyla Pratt), a 16-year-old Black girl in the town of Smithville. She attempts to navigates her home life, filled the antics off her father, Oscar (voiced by Tommy Davidson), who owns a failing snack business, her mother, Trudy (voiced by Paula Jai Parker), a well-off veterinarian, her grandmother, Suga Mama (voiced by Jo Marie Payton), and her two siblings, Bebe and Cece. At high school, she has four friends-of-sorts: Michael Collins, Dijonay Jones, Zoey Howser, and LaCienega Boulevardez. They are voiced by EJ Johnson, Karen Malina White, Soleil Moon Frye, and Alisa Reyes respectfully. All the while, two new kids, Maya and KG, raised by two dads (Barry and Randall), try to adapt to their new life in Smithville.

The show's first season broke ground for featuring openly gay characters, unlike in the original series, such as Michael, who is also gender non-conforming. His voice actor even considered gender transition. This character is joined by an interracial couple: Barry and Randall Leibowitz-Jenkins, who voiced by two gay actors (Zachary Quinto and Billy Porter). They are the adopted fathers of Maya and Francis "KG", voiced by Keke Palmer and "A Boogie" Dubose. Palmer previously voiced Izzy Hawthorne in Lightyear, a lesbian character who has a wife named Alisha. She has also stated that she does not want her sexuality to be defined by labels and that people should be fluid when giving themselves labels.

The series has been swept in the culture wars, with claims it is promoting the "gay agenda" or is "anti-White". In reality, there are various White characters, including Zoey and Barry, and often promotes themes of racial togetherness, rather than division. Additionally, Michael is the only protagonist in the series who is part of the LGBTQ community. Barry, Randall, and Makeup Boy (voiced by Bretman Rock), with the latter beginning to date Michael later in the second season, are only recurring characters. In fact, Penny and Dijonay both have boyfriends, Darrius St. Vil (voiced by Chance the Rapper) and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Brown (voiced by Asante Blackk), by the end of the season. Furthermore, Zoey is sweet on Myron (voiced by Marcus T. Paulk), and Maya romantically connects with one of the Chang Triplets, Billy.

Like the original The Proud Family, the series is not neutral when it comes to politics. It often focuses on racial injustice, whether noting past bans on interracial marriage, reparations, prejudice of Black people toward White people, anti-Black racism, sexism, or White skin privilege. This is interwoven with an emphasis on the importance of Black history, friendship, family, indigenous rights, harmonious neighbors, paying people fairly, respecting people for who they are, going beyond the color of their skin, and the folly of celebrity worship. Many books are name-dropped throughout the series, like Africans and Native Americans, as are the names of intellectuals such as Michelle Alexander, Robin DiAngelo, Elizabeth Acevedo, Leslie T. Chang, Saeed Jones, and Ta-Nehisi Coates. Many of these names are displayed during the English class taught by Kwame (voiced by Leslie Odom, Jr.).

Similar to season one, the second season of The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder provides more background about the characters, whether about Suga Mama's short-lived romance with an indigenous cowboy named Quanah (voiced by Wes Studi), and how Barry and Randall met, or the history of the Soul Vibrations band composed of Oscar and his brothers, and Giselle. As Penny says, in one episode, "you can't know yourself unless you know where you come from". This interconnected with the meaningful, and well-done, episode in which Bebe is diagnosed with autism, with the Proud family trying to figure out what to do with him, and coming to accept him, even if he requires more attention from them.

Other episodes focus on family conflict and fissures between friends, and neighbors, all of which are resolved before the end of each episode. This includes an episode when everyone is enamored with LaCienega's uncanny athletic ability (because of her big feet) and realize they have gone into a frenzy, another about Oscar, Felix, Puff, and Suga Mama fighting one another in an absurd parody of TV court shows, and one in which animals protest the awful Proud Snacks created by Oscar Proud. One of my favorite episodes in Season 2 featured a Princess Ball, with references to other Disney princesses: Penny dressed up as Princess Tiana, Dijonay as Cinderella, LaCienega as Princess Elena, Michael as Pocahontas, Maya as Beyonce, and Zoey as Princess Merida.

There are many notable characters in The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder like the Principal Hightower (voiced by Patricia Belcher), who insults and demans the students, reporter Vanessa Vue (voiced by Brenda Song) or incredibly wealthy Wizard Kelly (voiced by Aries Spears) who is shown as too tall to fit on the screen. However, in this season, Maya comes into her own, especially in the season two finale. In the episode, the ghost of Emily (voiced by Storm Reid), a Black girl enslaved by the town's founder, Christian A. Smith, guides her, revealing her diary which proves that Smith is a slaveowner, contradicting the common town myth.

In an interesting depiction of wealth-as-power, Wizard Kelly orders the police, clad in riot gear, to stop Maya, and her friends, who are protesting a ceremony dedicating Smith, with chants and placards. As a result, all of them, and their parents, are thrown in the city jail, despite the efforts of Barry to protect his children. His detective badge shown to mean nothing, as the police, who are serving as Kelly's goons, step over it with their boots.

Although Maya is just as determined as Wednesday Addams, in Wednesday, she does nothing equivalent to her. The latter, with the help of Thing, lights the statue of Joseph Crackstone, the Pilgrim founder of Jericho, on fire, causing it to melt. In fact, Kwame counsels his students to not pull down Smith's statue. This makes it ironic, then, that some reactionary media and personalities are all up-in-arms about the series, acting like it either "ruins" the original, or is "causing" division. Where were these people when Wednesday came out? They could have said some of the same things about that series, but they did not.

In many ways, the Season Two finale of The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder sets the series apart from methods of police control over the citizenry depicted in Velma or the incompetent police force shown in The Simpsons. That is because this series emphasizes how some can control and distort history to their benefit, covering up what they don't want others to see. There is no acceptance of the town myth which Lisa Simpson conceded to in The Simpsons. Instead, the town's name is changed to Emilyville and a new statue is erected. In a possible indication of the long-standing nature of the existing economic system, Kelly becomes the mayor of the town, and faces no consequences for cracking down on Maya, her friends, family, or other town residents.

This series features many guest stars like Jane Lynch, Gabrielle Union, Al Roker, Ceelo Green, and Andre Jamal Kinney, along with other lesser-known ones like Forrest Goodluck, and sports stars Laurie Hernandez, Gabby Douglas, and Dominque Dawes. Of the guest characters, I liked Dr. Lord (voiced by Holly Robinson Peete) best as she gives Penny a chance to talk about her experiences as the oldest child in the family, in which she is given additional responsibilities.

All of the episodes of the second season of The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder all aired on February 1st, unlike the previous season, which aired over a two month time period. There's strong animation and backgrounds which make the show stand out, as does the voice acting and music selection, which fit with stories and characters. It is unfortunate this 10-episode season isn't spread out across two months, because it would be easier to watch the series and take in all that happens. Even so, this season is much less glitzy than season 1 and that is to the show's benefit.

Furthermore, I appreciate that the series did an episode based on the little-remembered, or regarded, but wild, The Proud Family Movie, which seemed like an episode from Milo Murphy's Law, especially when they are fighting the Pistachions. In some ways, the episode reminded me of the annual Treehouse of Horror episodes of The Simpsons.

It is hard to know where The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder goes from here. If it follows the recent pattern of Disney series, such as Amphibia and The Owl House, it will have at least one more season. If that was the case, it would have one more season than the original series. However, it would need another 32 episodes to match the original, which aired from 2001 to 2005. This revival is different because the episodes range from 27 to 30 minutes, similar to the first season.

This series comes at the time that Disney is producing and airing series with diverse casts, like The Ghost and Molly McGee. In fact, this year, Iwájú, Kiff, Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Primos, and Hailey's On It! are set to air. Disney has also contracted to produce series such as Cookies & Milk, Moana, and Tiana. On the other hand, Disney series with similar casts such as Mira, Royal Detective and Amphibia ended last year, while The Owl House is set to end this spring.

The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder is more unique, incorporating perspectives of Black creators, unlike Hamster & Gretel, Phineas and Ferb, Kim Possible, and Star Wars: The Bad Batch, which likely have mostly White writers rooms and have casts largely composed of White characters. As production coordinator, Breana Navickas, recently wrote, the show's writer's room is Black, and much of the staff is Black and "a mix of asian folks, latine folks, white folks". This shows in this season even more strongly than in the first season, with the series establishing itself more, and putting the original into the dustbin.

This series is not alone. Craig of the Creek, Victor and Valentino, Carmen Sandiego, Arcane, and Glitch Techs are all recent series with diverse stories and characters. As such, The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, comes at an opportune time, when some executives are cutting back resources dedicated toward animated series, or squeezing workers in tough working conditions.

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed the second season even more than the first, and hope that Disney orders another season sometime this year, considering the amount of people watching it. There are so many more stories to tell with these characters. This could include Penny getting new, and non-toxic friends. Even so, I doubt this will happen because the plot of the series depends too much on their existence to bring in new friends, just as Futurama would fall apart without the antics of the Planet Express crew keeping its current members. In addition, considering the issues with colorism in the original The Proud Family, and somewhat replicated in the first season, it was good to see that the Gross Sisters (Nubia, Olei, and Gina), all by Raquel Lee, only had a small part in this season. The fact that Maya had a bigger part in the season, instead of the Gross Sisters, is a welcome development.

One of the series' downfalls is repeating elements of narrative set-up in the original series. Although I still believe the series could be stronger if it focused on older versions of the cast, the second season made the characters, at their current age, workable. It didn't fall into simple tropes used in Kim Possible and Totally Spies!, both animated series centered in school environments.

Wilted Zinnias is a biography that I am writing for the fictional musical collective I made that was formerly known as the band Zinnias, now currently as The Hyacinths!

It was initially an autobiography from the perspective of the band's guitarist and de facto leader Virgil. It was ALSO initially written in 2012 when I was 17 on here, so. I ran out of steam with that after a year and it has been rather stop-start for a while until I found a better way to frame the story.

You will be the first to read what I have of the preface!

In early 2007, Los Angeles rocker Saul Hawthorne made news by announcing his plans to launch a globalized band, Zoey and the Zinnias. And despite the naysayers, he did succeed in putting the band together - with his daughter Zoey at the center.

On May 5th, 2013, at the height of their career, Zinnias crashed and burned on stage rather infamously, cutting the band’s meteoric rise short and ending the band as we knew them. However shortly we did know them.

What happened to make it all fall apart has long been mythologized by fans and casual listeners alike, with no prior attempts to set the record straight; in this biography, this will finally change. I have (with difficulty) been able to get in contact with the original line-up of the band, and was able to get answers once and for all about this promising young band suddenly losing steam after being so hyped up.

Before we unfold this mystery we should, of course, lay the groundwork for who exactly are the players in this game, and how the band rose to prominence in the first place, which I will do in the following chapters.

I am, very excited to re-introduce the band again!

Just a small sneak peek of my next chapter for my HTTYD Hiccup Haddock Fic!

It had finally reached midnight, it was finally the date of the Clyde siblings Village’s downfall. The Clyde’s created a tradition, every year, on the same date at the same time, They’d find a way to honour the people, they never got a proper Viking Send off. This year, it was Freyr’s turn to lead.

Freyr stood up front, listening to the waves crash against the shores rocking the boat.

“Has everyone contributed?” The fifteen year old boy asked. Weakly holding his bow. His siblings nodded.

Placing their items on the boat, items that reminded them of their people, the eldest siblings got things for all the villagers, why the younger ones got specific items for people they could remember. Freyr stood up straight.

“We hope and pray that the Valkyries have Welcomed you and Lead you through Odin’s great battlefield.” He started. “May they sing your name with love and fury, so that we might hear it rise from the depths of Valhalla and know that you’ve all taken your rightful places at the table of kings.” Freyr paused, wiping away the tear that was escaping his eye. “For a great village had fallen, with amazing, Honorable Vikings, Children, men and women.” Freyr kicked his dry lips, closing his eyes at the horrible sound of his siblings tears. “Warriors, our chieftain, fathers, Mothers, sisters, brothers, aunts and Uncles, husbands, wives, friends and…family.” He finally choked out, kicking the boat into the water, watching it float away before lighting his Arrow and sending it away, his sibling following.

The last of the Clyde family watched as the boat went up in flames, just like their Village, as they’ve done for the last seven years.

The nine siblings linked hands as they stood alone in the cold, the moons light shining down on them.

A CONVERSATION WITH THE CATALYST - KYLE KANE

Kyle has been working with the Catalyst all this time. Below is their conversation, in case you would like to read what Kyle has been up to all this time...

TW: Insects, Rats, Death, Alcohol, Violence, Blood, Drug Use TASK #1 - APRIL (DURING THE DANCE-A-THON)

The Catalyst _

Kyle Kane... Kyle Kane... I know you sense I'm here. You've suffered greatly, haven't you? The Council betrayed you. They treated you like an outsider and what did the ones who were elected to protect you do when the hunters were let in? Nothing. They let your life be stolen from you far sooner than it should have been. But, I am here to make it right. I brought you back. I gave you this second chance at life and I can do so much more for you still. You want to feel normal again? You want to not have to look into the astral plane at every waking moment of every day? You want revenge on the town that has forsaken you? I can give you it all. I simply need you to do a few little tasks for me first. The first two being that there is a pixie among you. They go by the name of Dilan Selvi and I have note for you to deliver to her. You will find it sitting on your doorstep. It is a letter from her dear sister, Hande, and I think reaction will be quite amusing for us both. She may even began to act as someone else. After you've delivered the letter, I'd like you to stop by Town Hall for me. The Dance-A-Thon should offer you enough cover to get in and out without being seen. You will need to tamper with the cameras first. Cut out the electrical and then make your way to interogation room. The door is located in the study at end of the hall. Pull the the tattered leather almanac on the shelf and the door will open. The Council think they're so clever aren't they? Once inside, I will need you to put that magic of yours to good use and free the hunter being held captive there. The second you undo her bounds, your task is complete. Leave Zoey to fend for herself and return the Dance-A-Thon without being seen. Whatever you do, do not get caught, and you'll be one step closer to fulfilling your dreams. And remember- the Catalyst has plans for you.

TASK #2 - MAY (SPYING)

Kyle Kane... Kyle Kane... I see you have successfully completed task #1. You are one step closer to gaining what you desire most being a second chance at life and freedom from the astral plane. But, first, I have another favor to ask of you. I want you to mingle, starting with the vampires in town. AllI ask is that you speak to the following vampires- the bartender whose far older than she wants people to think, Aaliyah Rose, the vampire whose all bark and no bite, Esen Demirtas, and the one stuck in the past, Ralph Middlemas. Find out what they're hiding. What is that one secret of theirs they would rather die than have the entire town know? And remember- the Catalyst has plans for you.

TASK #3 - MAY (SPYING) The Catalyst_

Kyle Kane… Kyle Kane… while you're still completing Task #2, I have a 3rd task for you. This time I ask you to interact with your own kind. I need you to speak to the following being the theatrical among you, Rohan Persaud, the pyromaniac in the making, Reese Hawthorne, and the one who likes to play with bones, Bexley Beck. Find out what their greatest fears are. And remember- the Catalyst has plans for you.

TASK #4 - JUNE (BREAK-IN TO COVEN HQ)

Kyle Kane... Kyle Kane... while you're still completing the other tasks I've given you, I have a 4th task for you. You were such a good boy breaking Zoey out of the Council's clutches without being seen. Let's see if you can do it again. My task for you is to break into the Coven Headquarters tonight. Hidden within Poppy's office in the back of the Poison Room, you will find the Supreme's grimoire. Fetch it for me. Once you've received it, bring it to and hide it within the old oak tree located at the border of town beside the welcome sign. After the grimoire has been safely delivered to me, your task will be complete and, remember, you must get in and out unseen for- the Catalyst has plans for you. Kyle attempts to break into the Coven Headquarters. He finds his way to the door to HQ in the back of the Poison Room and starts to break in. Only before he can get the door open, Kyle trips the silent alarm in the store. Nico, strolling by the Poison Room that night, rushes to the scene of the crime. Only lucky for Kyle, he is able to escape before Nico can get to him. Nico sees a masked figure fleeing the scene of the crime and finds something of Kyle's left behind. What would you like for Kyle to leave at the Poison Room?

In his hurry, Kyle, upon reaching into his pocket to withdraw his pocket knife, allowed a faded soda bottle cap to clatter to the ground from within. The cap dates to 1967 and features a now illegibly faded picture of a baseball player on the underside, from an MLB All-Stars promotion that had been running at that time. Kyle came into possession of it while prowling the alleyways of the Pendulum Playhouse, where Rohan and his team were still discarding old props and costumes either not fit or unsold from their annual sale. Among them was a cardboard box of old glassware, vintage pop bottles among them. Kyle largely snagged the cap largely as a novelty while chatting with the rats, deciding it was lucky.

TASK #5 - JUNE (BREAK-IN TO PACK HQ)

The Catalyst_

Kyle Kane... You've stumbled upon a bit of a hiccup, haven't you? Maybe I expected too much from you? Put too much faith in you than you were capable of giving? Not only did you narrowly escape being caught, you left evidence at the scene of the crime that the authorities are analysing in the hopes of finding you, which brings us to your 5th task- throwing those noisy Council members off your trail, so that we can clear the way to finish the job that you started. For your 5th task, do not, and I repeat, do not go near the Coven Headquarters. The real target will have to wait. Instead, I want you to break into the Werewolf Den. If you see anything of interest worth taking- an acursed object or documents from the previous alpha, feel free to, but there is nothing of note that I particularly need here. The purpose of breaking into the Werewolf Den is to leave a mess. Toss papers around, knock over things in your wake. Make noise. You want to catch that meddling Alpha's attention and then escape before he can see you, leaving a new 'piece of evidence' in your wake that will frame a fae for both break ins rather than you. This is only part one of throwing the authorities off your trail, so get ready. You're on clean up duty from here on out and remember- the Catalyst has plans for you. Kyle stages a break in at the Wolf Den. Unlike with the Coven Headquarters, Kyle manages to enter the Den, leaving a mess in his wake. Nico, heading back to his Pack HQ, overhears Kyle, only once again, before Nico can catch him, Kyle escapes. Would you like Kyle to have stolen something from the Wolf Den and, if so, what would you like Kyle to have taken? With the main purpose of this task being to frame a fae for the Break Ins, which out of the three fae would you like Kyle to frame: Billie, Rangi or Anna? And what evidence/object will Kyle leave behind in order to frame them?

Kyle had an overly convoluted plan to frame Billie.

A few days before his break-in, he used a throwaway email address to communicate with a high-level producer at Siren Sounds Radio. Under the pseudonym "das Kind," (you know, German for "the kid," as in Billy, the Kid) he expressed immense love for Billie Fitz's late night show, with its array of classical selections, and requested she add Beethoven's 45-minute "Hammerklavier" to the playlist at a certain time that particular night "in memory of a long lost love."

His fake sob story was convincing enough for his request to be granted and insisted upon by studio leadership, perhaps a romantic gimmick to draw attention to less immediately popular programming.

Carrying a portable radio to time himself and a drawstring branded "Siren Sounds" backpack, Kyle tuned in to the show just as the song began.

In his haste, the witch stole an official pack member log (detailing wolves by name and address dating back some years) for no other reason than it looking official. He did not leave a note.

He was interrupted after a few minutes of reckless smashing.

Fleeing, Kyle left behind the backpack itself, which now contained the portable radio tuned to Billie's show on Siren Sounds, a slip of paper with das Kind's email and password (flowersforbex1967), a detailed map to the Den from the station, marked along the river with timed notes regarding the sonata's four movements.

Perhaps the right supernatural could SWIM from Sunny Harbor to Echo Acres, sack the Den, and make it back before the song even ended. It would be a perfect alibi for a radio host supposedly "in the booth" during that time frame.

TASK #6 - JUNE (BREAK-IN TO CLAN HQ)

The Catalyst_

Kyle Kane... Kyle Kane... Congratulations. You've managed to successfully throw the authorities off your trail. But, your clean-up duty doesn't stop here. The Coven Headquarters is still being too closely monitored. We need the Council to lower their guard. For your 6th task, I want you to break into the Clan Headquarters. It will be a tricky job given that the Pack will be stationed outside, but I trust you will be able to elude them and get in and out unseen. This time around wear a different disguise. Select a mask of your choice. One that can be recognizable from afar and will make it seem like you are an accomplice of Billie's rather than the one responsible for the previous attacks. Once inside the Country Club's backrooms, do not take anything. Instead, I want you to vandalize the property. I want you to stage the break in to seem like nothing more than the works of some angry fae whose been harboring resentment against the Council. Make it seem childish. Spray-paint profanity if you'd like. How you choose to vandalize the property is up to you, but it should present the break ins as nothing more than the acts of frustrated civilians. Like last time, I want you to leave clear evidence behind pinning the break in on another fae, Irirangi Hira. Catch the attention of a pack member on your way out before disappearing into the night and we will officially be back on track. Remember- the Catalyst has plans for you.

Kyle stages a break in at the Clan HQ. But, Kyle isn't working alone this time around. The Catalyst informed Kyle that while Kyle is breaking into the Clan Headquarters, there will be a simultaneous break in conducted by one of the Catalyst's other followers at the Coalition HQ. The plan is to stage all of the break ins as nothing more than petty vandalism in order for the authorities to declare the case closed. What mask will you have Kyle wear? It should be distinct and seem like something Rangi would pick out. It should also identify Kyle as a different thief given that he already framed Billie for the first two attacks. How would you like Kyle to vandalize the Clan HQ? And how would you like Kyle to frame Rangi? What evidence/object will Kyle leave behind in order to frame them?

For his latest break-in, Kyle has donned a full-face respirator, a distinctively heavy gas mask with a tinted glass plate obscuring the upper-half of his face. He has paired it deliberately with a long, brown wig, which, while not convincing on its own, could perhaps pass for someone's actual hair in the dark when spilling out from beneath a hoodie. The respirator itself is something an embalmer would wear to protect themselves against fumes while preparing a body.

The word 'spineless' has been sprayed on a wall in beige. Four surgical gloves (with their middle fingers sticking up in a crude gesture) have also been secured into the wall around it using a staple gun.

Abandoned on the ground is an aerosol can of RESTOR-SKIN spray, revealing the word was not made with paint, but rather a spray-on mortuary cosmetic meant to obscure skin imperfections.

A typed note has been left behind that says: We will not be sacrificed by a council of COWARDS. They are spineless. No more.

There is a double-space after each period; the writer perhaps first learned to type on a typewriter, not a computer.

Also left behind is a small black notebook. Folded up and tucked into a pocket on the rear of its cover is: a mortuary supply delivery invoice, on which Rangi's name has been rather well-forged. Someone has used Wite-Out and a ballpoint pen to manually change the number of received respirators from 5 to 4 (as if to make sure one would not be missed).

Kyle Reaches Out - JULY (INFO HE COLLECTED) Kyle_

Hey! Hey. Is this thing on? Testing, one two. Testing, one two. Sorry, boss. I don’t really get how the whole head voice thing works. Like, can you read all my thoughts? Shit. I hope not. Not that I got a whole lot goin’ on in the ol’ noggin, but what if I had an impure thought? Don’t tell me. Change the channel if you hear somethin’ you don’t wanna, yeah? But look, I’m just…you know, keepin’ up my part of the bargain. Lunar Cove is the same shit it’s always been. Everyone walkin’ around with a fake-ass smile, keepin’ up the status quo, and they just have no idea. No fuckin’ idea. The dead that fill this place. They’re all just goin' through the motions in a goddamn graveyard. I need out, okay? I needa get someplace else and try to have an actual life. Like you promised. Whatever. I got what you need.

Aaliyah Rose. Funny enough, I actually ran into her before you even brought it up, back at that boring-ass old people dance. But when you said her name, I really got to thinking. And you know what? She’s a total fuckin’ poser. Okay, first off, I used to work in a video store, right? They’d, like, run movies on the screens all the time. Mostly comedies. Less gruesome than the horror and action flicks. Point is, Aaliyah sounds like a fuckin’ reject from The Blues Brothers. "Mission from Gahd." Why’s she talk like she’s from Chicago if she says she’s from Seattle, huh? Now, I ain’t ever been nowhere but Lunar Cove, but I’ve seen that movie ten-thousand fuckin’ times. That’s a Chicago accent.

Strike two, she acts like she’s this cool grunge music fan, but it took her a second to know who Babes in Toyland were. And sure, maybe they ain’t, like, the number one popular band in the world, but they already had an album out by 1992. And she says she saw ‘em at The Ritz in New York. You know who they were openin’ for in 1992 at The Ritz? Fuckin’ Lush. Lush! Dreampop. You know who the godfathers of dreampop were? The fuckin’ Beach Boys.

Blah, blah, I’m Aaliyah, and I love Nirvana and rock and grunge, but I was at the Lush concert, and I remember the opening act thirty years later. And maybe she does. But, look, their sounds were completely different. Lush was cool and reflective. Babes in Toyland was visceral. They were not what you were goin’ to the Lush show for. My point is, somethin’ ain’t really addin’ up. What her real story? Who is she? Where does she come from? And how’d she end up here?

Okay, next. Esen Demirtas. I did a real good song and dance for her. Shit. Walked into the gallery with my sob story and tagger photos to find her drinkin’ on the job in the middle of the afternoon. Now, I ain’t great at work neither, but that ought to tell you something, yeah?

Anyway, I knew she was ready to dismiss me. Nice enough about it, sure, and come on, I ain’t exactly upper crust here. But even I know no one’s proppin’ up graffiti walls in fancy-ass art places. I'm not stupid.

But then I mentioned doin’ right by the dead. And her aura changed. Slightly. But all of a sudden, there was a twitch of new color, and she was humorin’ me. The color of sympathy. Find out who died, and you’ll find out what makes Esen tick. Tick tock. I’d start with that weird-ass watch. Old. I don’t know fashion, but I know what you can get cash for at a pawn shop.

Ralph Middlemas was easy as fuck. I didn’t even have to do nothing. I bummed a cigarette off him outside the dinner, and soon as he found out I was a witch, he was inviting’ me inside for a piece of pie. Let him borrow my telekinesis for an hour. Not like I’m any good at it, and he just used it to move the saltshaker back and forth.

Point is, though, ol’ Ralphie has a log. I didn’t see it, but he has it. Every power of every witch he’s met in-town, with notes of how easily he can convince ‘em to let him siphon. That’s why he came here, he said. For the rush of tastin’ magic. Suspicious, don’t you think? For him to roll in with the intention of takin’ people’s power? Targeting witches? Sweet talking and manipulating? Not sure how the coven would feel about that. ‘Cause he’s got their Supreme in his little pad too.

Onto the next. I learned from Ralph that Rohan Persaud can talk to ghosts. That was enough. Rohan’s a softie, a goddamn fuckin’ home for young, wayward witches. Maybe it’s a “Little Orphan Annie” thing. That’s a musical, right? Point is, I went to his office, claimed to be a spirit raiser myself, and he fuckin’ bought it. Can you believe it? I mean, you know I can see ‘em now. But I lucked out that he didn’t try to make me talk to the one that hangs around his stage. He really thought he was gonna be my new mentor.

In any case, we got to talking, and I told the whole sad story about my poor dead buddy and how much I’d love for him to just be back with me for real in the flesh. Wah, wah, whine, whine, whine. And bam. It all came out. Rohan told me to never, ever, ever use dark magic. All serious and professor-like. I think it scares him. You now what scares him more, though? I think he likes it. And that’s why it freaks him the fuck out. Forbidden fruit. He’s so all about the rules and order and etiquette, and it’s all because at the smallest chance, he’d go full dark. And that’s what it’s all about, ain’t it? Social protocol to hold back our more wild urges. Lunar Cove in a nutshell. 

Check. Reese Hawthorne. Loves bein’ a witch. Who wouldn’t, I guess? But I at least got a ton of other shit going for me. Ain’t sure she does. Take away the magic, and what have you got? Dunno. But it scares her. The thought of bein’ something else. A vampire. A wolf. A human. Bein’ robbed of her power. Changed. Cut down to size.

I think everythin’ fuckin’ scares Bexley Beck, though. Nervous sort, yeah? New to the coven. Real fond of Billie Fitz. I know I already landed her behind bars, but if you wanna break Bex, break Billie, I say. Make a little danger. Dangle her over a pit of sharks like a supervillain, I dunno. I ain’t really up-to-date on what the underwater food chain looks like these days. Sue me. 

Do I have to say "over" like a walkie-talkie? Jesus, is this what prayin’ is like? Pourin’ your heart out to a hire power and not even’ getting a two-way convo outta it? Gag me. 

All right. All right. It's that time of year. Insect colonies are reachin' their full numbers. Rats are makin' families. They'll be my eyes and ears like always. They see more than you think. I'll let ya know what they say.

TASK #7 - JULY (Spying) The Catalyst_

Kyle Kane... Kyle Kane... we are officially back on track with the plan! You have done wonderfully and your reward will be coming very soon. But, we have to be patient, my little pet. In the meantime, I have another task for you. This will be the last time I ask you to spy on anyone before its time for all of our hardwork to come to fruition. I want you to spy on the humans being Ben, Chai, Efe, Jonah, Kari and Paloma. Find out what it would take for them to move out of town. And remember- the Catalyst has plans for you.

Kyle Kane…OoOooo…Kyle Kane…That’s what you sound like. No offense. Either way, comin’ in hot from the crash pad. Which is, ya know, my mind. Humans are pretty fucked up, dude. Tight-lipped. If you got any other cool psionic powers, I could probably use a hand here. I’m working with what I can get. Now, don’t get me twisted. I’m still in this. All the way in this. Like, did you see how they all just turned on those Fae? Christ. That’s why this town is such a shitshow. Always out for innocent blood to keep inflating their safety bubble. And that fucking council? New, old. It’s all the same. I sprinkle a few haunted house-level hints, and they’re all out coming for throats. It’s bullshit. I want out. Out, out. Like I’m going to Disneyland.

Not to sound impatient. Or irritated. Or annoyed. Or tired. Whatever. Anyway. That's me. Happy little pet. 

The fireman, Efe, he has a few sisters, you know? And they’re all overachievers, which, no wonder he’s got such a goddamn chip on his shoulder. But that also means his sisters have never…you know, walked on the wild side. Sweet-talked one of ‘em, though. She thought I was funny. Cute. Quaint ‘cause I had no real chance. But she told me Efe had a whole life out in Chicago before coming back here, and he misses it. He was a hero out there. And suppose something bad happened to one of his old big city buddies. Something he could have stopped if he were in the field. Might be enough to send him off, make him forget Lunar Cove altogether, especially if he can’t save this place.

Jonah. Some of the aquarium rats told me he left already. I guess he’s back, though. Either way, there must be something on the outside drawing him out, yeah? A home? A family? Something is pulling him away from here, so he ought to just go to it. You just gotta get rid of whatever made him come back. That one witch, Rohan, has a picture of him as his mobile phone backdrop. Maybe there’s a start, yeah?

I found some of Ben’s old campaign materials. You know, from when he was running for class president of the mortals and shit? Peace and unity among the species. Yeah, what-the-fuck-ever. He’s a tough one, though. Genuinely likes Lunar Cove for some reason, so it seems. But forgets that he’s just a guest in it, ya know? This ain’t a town for humans, no matter how soft he may feel. My personal hunch is he needs some reminding, that he remains alive here only so long as the folks with fangs and magic say he can. He’s at their complete mercy. And they’ll turn on him as quick as they turned on those Fae. I bet they make fun of him behind closed doors anyway. And really, what can he do to stand up to any of 'em? A vampire, a witch, a werewolf, a Fae Queen...the human is obviously the council's weak link, and they'll cut the dead weight the second they need to. 

Chai is a mystery. Surfs. Who the fuck surfs in Rhode Island? Why not go to, like, Cali or something? Or at least Jersey. Took drugs from me, by the way, some rando on the beach, so he’s adventurous enough for it. Not the quaint homebody small town sort, I don’t think. So why stay then? What’s so much better in here than out there? I think that’s your path to him. 

The others, well…tough to get my claws into. But I’ll keep at it. Over and out.

TASK #8 - JULY (Dreamscape Plot Drop)

The Catalyst_

Kyle Kane... Kyle Kane... I know we've been planning for you to break back into the Coven Headquarters to steal that grimoire for me, but the plans have changed once more and I have a far more important task for you. Leave the grunt work of retrieving the book to Theodore Moore. You've proved yourself to be worthy of a greater task. Instead, I need you to perform a rather complicated spell. It involves dark magic and, yes, it will come with a cost, but I promise you the reward will be more than worth it. While everyone else is at A Midsummer Night's Dream, I want you to use the opportunity to sneak off and find a safe place to hide. Then when you are sure you are in a guarded location, I want you to cast the spell that will have every single townsgoer, outside of the fae, fall into a deep slumber where they will be forced to live out their worst nightmares. Which nightmare they'll find themselves trapped in will be courtesy of those helpful tips you've been gathering on them these past few weeks. The spell should be preformed just as everyone is returning back to their seats after intermission. No sooner and no later. You do this for me and you will be one step closer to being free. And remember, the Catalyst has plans for you. At the start of the performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream, Kyle will sneak away and hide where he can perform the spell without interuption. What safe location will Kyle choose?

Catalyst...Catalyst...Pfft. Yeah, sure. Sure. Look, I'm getting sorta antsy here, boss. Like, the fucking ghosts are getting bolder. I don't...Whatever. Don't gotta ask me twice to perform rites old and forbidden. 'Bout time I get my hands on some of the good shit. Besides, I love a good scare. Speakin' of which, I told a few folks I was scared of heights. Ain't true, mind you. But no one'll look for me at the lighthouse. I'll do it from the tippy-top. Did you know there's a pretty fuckin' big colony of creepy-crawly woodlice right around that cliff? Iso-pods. I'll ask 'em real nice to swarm the door if anyone gets too near. How's that sound? 

TASK #9 - JULY (Dreamscape Plot Drop)

The Catalyst_

Kyle Kane... Kyle Kane... How are you, my favorite little pet? The spell you performed worked perfectly and now the true fun will begin.The entire town outside of those pesky little fae are now fast asleep where they are being forced to live out their worst nightmares. But, I could hardly leave you out of the fun. So, now it will be your turn to enter the Dreamscape. Only rather than live out a nightmare, how about you help orchestrate one? You will be entering the dream of Bexley, Ronnie & Caleb. In it, they will receive what they truly desire, only for it to be ripped out from under them. When things in their nightmare begin to go awry, you will have the opportunity to mess with them. Encourage the 'Lunar Covians' in their head to turn against them. Shout profanities, chase them out of town, do whatever you so choose and the best part? With you in the dream, their nightmare will be locked out meaning that no fae will be able to enter in an attempt to help them. Have fun my dear, Kyle, and remember- the Catalyst has plans for you. Safe in his hiding spot, Kyle will enter the dreamscape. He will play the role of the 'orchestrator' as he turns on Ronnie, Caleb and Bexley. Ronnie, Caleb and Bexley's nightmare are only a dream. But for them, it will feel real. Feel free to write out the thread with Virginia, Envy and Becca & play out Kyle's actions in the dreamscape in whichever way you'd like. As the plot drop also explains, because Kyle has entered Ronnie and Bexley's nightmare, the nightmare is blocked from any fae from being able to enter to help them out. Feel free to have Kyle take advantage of this fact.

TASK #10 - AUGUST (MISERY BUSINESS DISCORD EVENT)

Kyle Kane... Kyle Kane... Those pesky fae might have managed to free the Lunar Covians from our dreamscape, but the real nightmare is just beginning. My final task for you is as follows- I want you to head back over to the Pendulum Playhouse. They'll still be waking up and in a daze which will give you the perfect time to strike. How you plan to terrorize them is up to you. Feel free to channel one of those characters from the horror movies you're always droning on about for all I care. But, whatever you do, make sure to cause utter chaos. You need to distract the masses so Theo can have the chance to kill the Clan Leader. It's what he asked me for. He wanted revenge on the Madam Mayor and wanted to take over the Clan as their new leader. Only between you and I, he doesn't have the spine to see the job through. He's not like you. So, when Theo fails to kill Meena Raja, I want you to grab the Supreme. Don't take her beforehand. Wait until the moment the town thinks they've gained the upper hand on Theo. Then, when he's breathing his last breath, kill Poppy Reed and, on the off chance the townspeople don't kill Theo for trying to kill Meena, take Theo out along with Poppy. As you know by now, I will give my own everything they could possibly desire, but only if they uphold their end of the bargain and if Theo can't uphold his own, he doesn't deserve to be the new leader of Lunar Cove, now does he? But, you, my little pet, deserve the freedom you so seek. So, kill the leader of the witches and the traitor. Then use your own little pets to hold the Lunar Covians at bay. The Lunar Covians will try to run towards Poppy and likely even attempt to bring her back. Don't let them. Instead, keep them at bay before you make your escape. A car will be waiting for you on the outskirts of town. Once you've accomplished your final task, get in it and, mark my words, everything I promised will be yours. Our Discord Event will begin tomorrow. The event will start with the townspeople waking up from their dreams. A few minutes into the discord event, we will post instructions on the group detailing Kyle's grand entrance. The doors of the Pendulum will fling open and the scutter of rats will be heard heading towards them. That will be Kyle's cue to cause whatever chaos he would like. Attack characters with bugs and animals. Throw things around with telekinesis. But, hold off on grabbing Poppy until we give you the go-ahead. First Theo will make a move to kill Meena. Then we will send you further instructions through our discord ticket with you. Also, when causing chaos if you can make sure to target Bri and Kui that would be great. They both ignored the Catalyst's requests, so the Catalyst would like to see them pay if possible.

TASK #11 - AUGUST (MISERY BUSINESS DISCORD EVENT) The Catalyst_

Congratulations, my little pet! You succeeded in killing the Supreme. I knew you had it in you and now for your reward. I release you as my resurrected. It's not an easy dark magic spell to do, but a promise is a promise. You are now only a witch. You will no longer be able to see into the astral plane. Only, oh! What's that? Are you already starting to feel funny? Have a pang in your chest? I didn't know it would kick in that fast. How curious. You see, releasing you comes with a little catch. My magic was what was keeping you alive and, without it, well, I'm afraid you don't have that much time. Thirty minutes at most? You probably can't even make it to the getaway car if you tried. Now, don't be mad, my sweets. I promised you that I would make you feel normal again and I have. I promised you that you would no longer be forced to see into the astral plane every waking moment of every day and I fulfilled my end of the bargain. I wish you could enjoy it for longer, but at least in your final moments, you can know that you succeed in getting revenge on the town that had forsaken you. Farewell, little one. It's been swell and before you go, mind passing along a little message for me? Tell what is left of the Council, the Catalyst is coming and, if you're not afraid yet, you will be.

Chapter 21: Cemeteries & Crepes

Welcome back to my Totally Lit Road Trip Blog where the lit stands for literary!

After a little snafu with the old hosting site, I’ll be continuing to chronicle my road trip adventures here on Tumblr.

It’s been a minute since my last literary adventure, but now that it’s summer, this teacher is ready for some R & R...Reading & Roaming! 

The first literary road trip of the summer brings us to Concord, Massachusetts, with a pit stop in Providence, Rhode Island along the way. Joining me for the first time is my friend & roommate, Jess.

As part of my goal to visit at least one literary destination in each state, Rhode Island proved to be a little tricky. Being the smallest state, there’s not a ton going on here book-wise. However, Rhode Island is known as the home of H.P. Lovecraft, who was a famous horror & “weird fiction” writer. Now, if you know me in real life, you know that horror is my least favorite genre. I simply do not like to be scared and I hate gore, which is what a lot of modern horror entails. But with his sci-fi take on horror, Lovecraft is much more my vibe. 

Prior to embarking on this trip, I read three of Lovecraft’s short stories:  “The Call of Cthulhu”, “At the Mountains of Madness”, and “The Dunwich Horror”, and I enjoyed being creeped out (but not utterly terrified) by all three. “At the Mountains of Madness” in particular reminded me a lot of Poe’s “The Narrative of A. Gordon Pym,” which Lovecraft actually references in his short story. After my first foray into Lovecraft stories, I’ve reached the conclusion that I do like horror - but just “classics” like Poe, Dracula, and Frankenstein. 

Our first stop on this road trip, therefore, was H.P. Lovecraft’s grave at Swan Point Cemetery in Providence, RI. (Okay, it was actually our second stop. After five hours in the car, we needed food first, so we stopped for some delicious crepes at Café Zoey. We recommend the Notre Jam, Elvis in Providence, & Campania crepes!)

Unlike the two cemeteries I visited on last year’s road trips, this one was easy to locate and navigate. Third time’s the charm, I guess! One of the things I love about visiting authors’ graves is seeing all the little trinkets that fans leave on the stones. Lovecraft’s grave had the usual suspects like rocks and pens, but it also had tons of coins, and even two bags of Trolli candies (the octopus and crawler varieties, naturally). 

After paying our respects to Mr. Lovecraft, we hopped back in the car and headed to Concord, MA, where we’ll be for the majority of our trip. There are a TON of literary attractions in Concord, because it was home to so many famous authors, including Louisa May Alcott (Little Women), Nathaniel Hawthorne (The Scarlet Letter), and Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau (both essayists & poets). 

We decided to stick with the theme of graveyards today, so after we checked into our hotel, we headed to Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, where you can find the final resting place of all four of these writers on the appropriately named Author’s Ridge.

Despite the fact that we had a mobile map of the cemetery, it still took us a few minutes to figure out exactly how to find Author’s Ridge, but eventually we figured it out. The authors are all buried on family plots, and it’s interesting to see the different ways that each family marked their gravestones. For example, the Alcott family has a large monument with the last name on it, and small gravestones with each family members’ initials, whereas the Thoreau family used first names on their smaller gravestones.

After our visit to Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, we ended our night with dinner at Concord’s Colonial Inn, where Jess had a steak, and I enjoyed some great ravioli in pesto cream sauce. 

Over the next few days, we’re going to visit museums and authors’ homes, so check back soon for more updates!
