Griffin McElroy just casually dropped the line "our bodies are choirs, and we are the song they are singing" and then just. Went back to playing DnD. As if that's just a thing normal people say between dice rolls.
Ethersea is so underrated.

[ID: A brightly colored digital portrait of Zoox Anthellae from The Adventure Zone: Ethersea.
He is a Brinarr wearing copper diving gear over his head and torso. Beneath the glass of his helmet, his face is comprised entirely of dark blue brain coral. Out of the side ports and the top of the helmet, orange-colored staghorn coral juts out, almost like a salamander’s gills. His eyes are, in contrast to his detailed body, very cartoony. They are small and green. His arms are made of long anemone tendrils.
He is looking at the viewer with a neutral but nonetheless warm demeanor. The background is bright cyan. End description.]

Here’s some finished Ethersea Mermay art :-)
[Image Description:
Digital art of Amber and Devo as merfolk. Amber is inquisitively pointing at a miniature Zoox inside a glowing orb attached at Devo's hip.
Amber is depicted as an older merfolk with a short and stocky build, her tail is that of a shark's. She has medium length hair, which she puts into a small, loose bun. She wears a seaweed top, and around her hip is a variety of knives, and a small loose bag.
Devo is depicted as a younger merfolk with a slim and taller build, his tail is that of a blue marlin's. He has long wavy hair, tied loosely with long strands of seaweeds. He wears a seaweed cloak around his shoulders, adorned with shells as the clasp. Around his hip is a belt with a bag on one side, and a harness to hold a small orb that houses Zoox on the other.
Zoox is a small yellow coral, looking up happily at the two merfolk.
End ID]
+ A little extra sketch to emphasize a detail I wasn’t able to add
(Also, small teaser for a short Oksamber comic for this AU under the cut, wink)

The thing about Amber is she’s got stuff to lose. Like she’s already lost so much but she still has people she cares about and wants to keep safe. Joshy, Chauncey, and the rest of the Cloaca, and obviously Kodira.
Like Devo is playing fast and loose with burning bridges and picking fights. But in his mind why shouldn’t he? He’s not picking fights with Zoox and Amber and they’re his whole world.
Zoox is less aggressive but he’s essentially in the same position.
But Amber’s got a life and friends. History. A home. A reputation.
She can’t just say anything or do anything to finish the job each time. But she also can’t explain that to Devo because he’s never been in that situation and because she’s Amber Gris.

Drawing something for every episode of Ethersea - Episode 1 (next)
Part one of a project I’ve been wanting to start for a while now! Whatever I’ll draw for each ep will probably vary from either full illustrations, comics, NPC line-ups or just doodles! It’ll be whatever my heart tells me as I listen to the episode 👍

I just want to point out that Devo and Zoox essentially dragged Amber into her main character role in Founder’s Wake. Like by all accounts, she should have already been the main character in the shoreside community. She single-handedly defended them from the most dangerous natural predators, the blink sharks, using a magic power that we have no reason to believe was possible before her, and everyone we meet in Founder’s Wake knows who she is even 25 years later. But she was just too content to chill behind everyone else until two op babies decided to call her captain and rely on her for their emotional regulation.
She gives advice to the ethersea’s two clingiest troublemakers one day and as a result becomes a god.
