Y’all “critical thinking” does not equal “criticism”.

If you’re considering telling/asking an adopted person any of the following, or anything similar to such:
“You’re so lucky you weren’t aborted.”
“Aren’t you glad your mother didn’t abort you?”
“You should be grateful that you have a better life now.”
“Why would you want to know what your birth mother is like? You have a perfectly good life now.”
“It takes a very special person to want an orphan child.”
“How can you be pro-choice? You wouldn’t be here if your birth mother had been.”
May I make a small suggestion?
Don’t.

The QPR History Discourse: where we are.
An update on the situation: (because I know all of you are glued to your seats about this one 🙄)
It looks like we may have to pack it up, lads. I’m currently having discussions with a (frankly terrifyingly) influential ace blogger and it seems the people who created the label QPR strongly object to the perspective that they (as Ace bloggers who happened to be aro-spec) could, in any way, represent the aro community. So I will probably be officially retracting my previous statements that QPRs are aro history.
Where that leaves the aro community in relationship to QPRs, I don’t know. I’m honestly shocked that the weight of this should fall at my doorstep at all. If any other aro blogs want to chime in, feel free. But as of now, QPRs are ace history, not aro history.

“Did these people [in academia who claim that they are not exposed to disabled people] realize that when they encountered the work of Rosa Luxemburg (who limped), Antonio Gramsci (a crippled, dwarfed hunchback), John Milton (blind), Alexander Pope (dwarfed hunchback), George Gordon Brown (club foot), [Jorge] Luis Borges, James Joyce, and James Thurber (all blind), Harriet Martineau (deaf), Toulouse-Lautrec (spinal deformity), Frida Kahlo (osteomyelitis), Virginia Woolf (lupus), they were meeting people with disabilities? Do filmgoers realize when they watch the films of James Ford, Raoul Walsh, André de Toth, Nicholas Ray, Tay Garnett and William Wyler that these directors were all physically impaired? Why is it when one looks these figures in dictionaries of biography or encyclopedias that their physical disabilities are usually not mentioned – unless the disability is seen as related to creativity, as in the case of the blind bard Milton or the deaf Beethoven? There is an ableist notion at work here that anyone who creates a canonical work must be physically able. Likewise, why do we not know that Helen Keller was a socialist, a member of the Wobblies, the International Workers of the World, and an advocate of free love? We assume that our ‘official’ mascots of disability are nothing else but their disability.”
— Lennard J. Davis, Enforcing Normalcy: Disability, Deafness, and the Body

allistics talk about autism like it’s this horrific condition but like… i honestly wouldnt trade my autism for anything.
i love the way i think. i love my special interests. i dont want to be a social butterfly or crave social contact. i dont want to lie to people or engage in small talk. i love stimming, i love all my stims.
my sensory issues, social difficulties, and my executive dysfunction make my life difficult, sure, but if theyre the price i have to pay to be who i am then so be it. with proper supports and accommodations, theyd be a lot more manageable.
without my autism, i wouldnt be who i am. when i hear allistics talk negatively about autism… i dont think they really understand what it is. autistics are just another variation of humanity. we arent wrong, we’re just different.

I think part of the reason discussing political subtext in media on Tumblr is so fraught is that a large chunk of this site’s userbase seems honestly to believe that media contains only and precisely those political subtexts that were explicitly intended by its author, and that it’s impossible to write reactionary propaganda by sheer accident.
Leaving aside the fact that “the author is directly responsible for every conceivable reading of their work” is a really weird critical stance, it also tends to discourage folks from casting a critical eye on their own work. If only those subtexts that you explicitly intended exist, then obviously anyone who reads something in your work that you didn’t explicitly intend is either making things up out of malice or misunderstanding because they’re stupid.

You are always, without exception, allowed to critically evaluate the information presented to you and make up your own mind about it. This is baseline human dignity; to deny it is abusive. Resist anyone, even the loudest and most influential voices, who tells you that allyship requires subordinating your own capacity for critical thought. You do not owe anyone that.

Genuinely getting concerned at how often I'm starting to see legitimate media analysis get brushed aside as "fandom shit," and how often I see people act hostile toward media analysis in general.
Film history, critique, and analysis--specifically in regard to animation--are massive special interests of mine. I fucking love getting into the guts of something to see why it does or doesn't work. I do it at a hobby level, but all of it is part of genuine academic disciplines that people pay money to study.
Same goes for literary analysis. It's a field of study that people spend their careers on. But meanwhile here on tungl dot hell, I see people rip others to shreds for "posting cringe" and "wasting time on fandom shit" when they post any analysis at all of something deemed "stupid fandom garbage."
And then they make "lol blue curtains" jokes and wonder why it seems like folks' ability to critically analyze media is declining.
