For those of us in the United States, it’s Election Day, or the last day of political advertising! I know I’m not the only one who’s tired of hearing/seeing these ads everywhere. I hope that if you can vote, you do. #silentfilm #marypickford #patriotic #vote #electionday #american #silentfilmposter #silentfilmart https://www.instagram.com/p/CktTVMBuctS/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Visited Distortions Monster World this month and found a familiar face. Unfortunately, they’re closing their doors at the end of the month. Actress Anna May Wong is now the first Asian American to be featured on United States currency. Considered the first major Asian American movie star, she was also the first Asian American actress to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was in one of the first Technicolor films, “The Toll if the Sea” from 1922. #annamaywong #asianamerican #asianamericanactress #chineseamerican #silentfilm #silentfilmactress #silentfilmactor #silentmovies #classicmovies #cinema https://www.instagram.com/p/Cj6URvEvkLs/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The inspiration for Batman’s Joker character came from a silent film character. Swipe to see Conrad Veidt in “The Man Who Laughs” from 1928 and The Joker from the Batman Comics. #batman #thejoker #silent film #conradveidt #comics #horror #silenthorrorfilm https://www.instagram.com/p/Cj0oaOMOyWD/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

When I was in high school, my mom liked to borrow old movies from the library. These were in the VHS days of the early 90’s, pre-internet, pre-TCM, so this became my introduction to classic movies. We mostly borrowed Fred and Ginger musicals, but at one point I watched some Chaplin films and immediately became a fan. One of my favorites was Modern Times, which still holds up today. The scenes I remember most are the eating machine and when he’s unable to stop doing the wrenching movements even after he walks away from the assembly line. The underlying messages in the film are just as relevant today and the gags just as funny. #chaplin #charliechaplin #moderntimes #classicmovies #silentcomedy #silentmovies #classichollywood https://www.instagram.com/p/Cg4MUooOWR8/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

New book alert: “Inventing the It Girl: How Elinor Glyn Created the Modern Romance and Conquered Early Hollywood” by Hilary A. Hallett Anyone else reading this? Not only is it a fascinating look at a relatively unknown but very culturally influential woman of the early last century, but it gives a lot of great background information on the history of the times she lived in. I highly recommended this book to not only silent film fans but anyone interested in early 20th century life, and especially people who love Downton Abbey. #silentfilm #bookrecommendations #downtonabbey #20thcentury #flapper #jazzage #history #clarabow #itgirl #elinorglyn #silentfimfan #classicmovies #silentmovies #femenist https://www.instagram.com/p/Cgo54s2u-8-/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I am working on a video to kick off my YouTube channel, and it stars the incomparable Rudolph Valentino. I have been watching so many of his films, most of which I’d never seen before. If you’re wondering what all the fuss was about, watch any of his films. You’ll fall for him, too. #rudolphvalentino #silentfilm #silentmovies #silentfilmstar #silentfilmstars #silentfilmactor #classicmovies #moviehistory #sexsymbol #hollywoodhistory #classichollywood https://www.instagram.com/p/Cd_XUF1JaGp/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“The Devil’s Needle” 1916 Also known as “The Dope Fiend” and “Drugged Hopes” I’m doing research on “Social Films” of the silent era, and passing the knowledge on to you! Drugs were a big topic in these cautionary tales, warning the audience of the pitfalls of cocaine, heroine, and other illegal substances. They can be very entertaining to watch, and are a must-see if you’re new to the genre. #silentfilm #cautionarytale #socialfilm #justsayno #silentfilms #classichollywood #classicmovies #classicfilm #filmbuff #filmhistory #silentfilmera https://www.instagram.com/p/CcOxa1VsEDJ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Douglas Fairbanks in “The Mystery of the Leaping Fish” from 1916. Fairbanks stars as Coke Ennyday - get it? He’s like Sherlock Holmes with a drug problem, solving a mystery while wearing a bandolier of syringes. It’s a comedy, too! #douglasfairbanks #silentcomedy #justsayno #silentfilm #silentfilms #drugsonfilm #silentera #classichollywood #classicmovies #classicfilms https://www.instagram.com/p/CcOkvrWP3uT/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Charlie Chaplin with what I assume is one of his Bell and Howell 2709 cameras. Chaplin was one of the few individuals to own one of these cameras, as most were purchased by companies. #chaplin #charliechaplin #silentfilm #silentmovies #camera #filmcameea #cinema #vintagecameras #cameranerd #camerageek #filmgeek #silentmovies #classicmovies https://www.instagram.com/p/CcD76qwPRp-/?utm_medium=tumblr

Silent Film actor Emerson Romero, who went by the stage name Tommy Albert, was also deaf. When the talkies took over, there was little work for deaf actors, and he left the industry. In the 1940’s, he started experimenting with captioning films for the deaf community, and his efforts were later perfected by others to become the closed captioning system we know today. #silentfilm #silentfilms #silentfilmstar #deaf #history #inventor #classichollywood #filmhistory #moviehistory #classicmovies #classicfilm #deafactors https://www.instagram.com/p/Cb8ViykPgOs/?utm_medium=tumblr

From “A Trip to the Moon” by Georges Méliès (1902). If you haven’t seen this film, you must. Actually, you should watch all of his films! Auguste and Louis Lumière, film pioneers. The Lumière brothers, as they are commonly known, were photographic equipment manufacturers who invented the groundbreaking Cinématographe, the first camera that could project a moving image for an audience, in 1895. That year, the brothers debuted their invention to an astonished audience. Rumored to have been at that presentation was a man who was so inspired that he went on to produce some of the earliest science fiction and fantasy films, Georges Méliès. #silentfilm #silentfilmhistory #silentfilmhistorian #lumierebrothers #georgesmelies #georgesméliès #filmpioneers #frenchfilm #frenchfilmmaker https://www.instagram.com/p/CbymPUSM3i7/?utm_medium=tumblr
