Haymitch & Katniss - Luck Part 1

There's a special way that Katniss is really just a luckier Haymitch and it first has to do with how they were Reaped. They both are not pulled from the bowl but both of them end up as a tribute and it's because they are protecting the person they love the most.

Haymitch protects Lenore Dove from the Peacekeepers while she attempts to help Woodbine Chance's mother, causing Drusilla to pick him as a replacement.

Katniss willingly volunteers after her sister, who Katniss says is the only person she knows for certain she loves, is Reaped.

The luck starts, even there. The murder of Woodbine Chance and the subsequent heroic act of Haymitch is not broadcast. Drusilla says that the feed is on a five-minute delay so when broadcast picks up, there is no Woodbine Chance, no heroic act to save his love from the Peacekeepers. To every other district and the Capitol, Haymitch Abernathy was the one originally chosen.

But with Katniss, Prim was the one originally chosen. It's unknown if the broadcast was delayed but it doesn't seem to matter as the Gamemakers allow the footage of Primrose being Reaped and Katniss volunteering. This probably immediately endeared her to the Capitol audience and helped with the image that the team eventually cultivated for her, as a caring and empathic person who would do anything to protect the people she loves. Not only this, but the Gamemakers knew exactly how to twist her story to make it as appealing as possible to their audience and keep them engaged in the Games.

Where this really comes in is after the Games. Haymitch has family. In fact, he has the same family unit as Katniss, though their relationships with their mothers is quite different. When watching the recap of the reaping, interviews and the Game, Haymitch notes that the footage filmed with his mother and brother are absent. Completely absent. It was probably incredibly easy to wipe all mention of Willamae (Haymitch's mother) & Sid (Haymitch's younger brother) because how often are they mentioned in the interviews?

When he arrives home-- after long weeks of psychological torment at the hands of President Snow-- because of his rebellious actions, Haymitch's family is burned alive by the Capitol. And because their existence has been entirely wiped, no one in the Capitol is none the wiser. The official story is that it was a freak accident. Possibly the other district victors would believe this too. But District 12 knows and they know it was not just a punishment but a warning. Stay down. Stay quiet and your family will live. Do you see what we could do to you?

But with Katniss, the Capitol cannot punish her by killing Primrose. From the moment Katniss is introduced to the other districts and to the Capitol audience, she is introduced as the girl who volunteered to save her sister. Primrose is discussed in the interviews. Katniss talks about her to Rue. Everyone knows who Primrose is. And if Primrose dies in a mysterious way right after Katniss wins the games, people will take notice. They might even start calling for an official investigation. The Capitol would obviously create a sham investigation but how costly would that be for them, when they could just use Primrose in the Victory Tour footage?

Sure, the Capitol would probably get rid of her later on but in the year after the Game, Katniss' family is completely off limits. Because she got the best circumstances. She got lucky.

But unfortunately, the Capitol still was pulling the strings. They increased the amount of Peacekeepers and switched out the more lax officers. They finally started turning on the electric fence and even used it to try to catch Katniss breaking the law.

But they could not touch Prim.

This post got a little long so I am going to split these into parts because I loved both the Hunger Games & Sunrise on the Reaping and picking things apart is my favourite thing to do.

Re reading the original hunger games is so funny bcus katniss can literally read haymitch's mind like what. I'm dying of thirst but haymitch hasn't sent me water, that must mean that there's some nearby!! And one kiss is one pot of broth!! Like she even acknowledges that it's strange when she's like oh to peeta this would just be a pot of broth. Haymitch will give her one look and katniss knows immediately what he means and she's right every time

Meanwhile peeta is like your dress really suits you and you look nice :) and katniss is like he's trying to kill me

While it is very, VERY funny to watch James Sunderland straight up barely care about Maria for most of the game, especially when shes bitching him out for not caring and he's just standing there like "yeah and?" I always think about how James might have seen and treated Mary while she was sick

In James' deluded mind, Mary died three years ago but Mary didn't really die, she just got sick. But in James' mind, the woman he loved was gone and replaced by someone who looked like her but didn't act like his beloved wife at all

He was always looking for Mary, the one who wasn't slowly dying from an unknown disease, the woman in the picture, who had been gone for a long, long time

I think it's real funny to assume Pete still doesn't know what Blackbeard did to Lucius. Like, Lucius started explaining what happened like:

Lucius: babe... I lied. While you were away, terrible things happened to me--

Pete, sobbing: no no no no!!! nno,,, whgy god why!!' Hhow coul, u do thhis to my louie!!! ima gona be sii...ck...

So then Lucius starts drawing Blackbeard a bunch and Pete gets jealous, like yeah, he's a great pirate and a beautiful man but is he really, like. Lucius' type? Don't get him wrong, they do not own each other but Pete's pretty sure he and Blackbeard would be a better match and anyways, Lucius already has Pete (and fang and roach and maybe izzy if that cigarette thing ever pans out) so maybe Lucius should let some other guys have a turn???

Do you guys think about Lucius drawing Pete with Blackbeard's head and how that might mean that Lucius is seeing Pete as someone who could hurt or kill him because he idolizes Blackbeard so much and because Pete didn't really care that Blackbeard hurt Lucius and now Lucius could be afraid that Pete and the other crew members would not only be capable of hurting him but might actually do so and it especially hurts him to think Pete might be capable of it because Pete was supposed to be his man, the one who was always on his side and now all he sees when he looks at Pete is danger?

Or maybe it's just funny haha Lucius sees Blackbeard everywhere lol

People always read Lucius' "We love an audience." as an admission instead of the snarky little snip at Wee John. I wish more people read it as a jab because it means that Wee John walked in on Lucius and Pete sucking each other off and decided to settle in for a nap. Then he had the ABSOLUTE GALL to complain that they were being too loud

They killed Izzy because they knew steddyhands endgame too powerful. Can you imagine the three of them in that little inn together? They'd fuck it down so hard nothing would be left. Or Stede would end up shooting the both of them within hours

It's a little fun fact about Fat Nuggets the pig that he was given to Angel as a gift from Valentino. What if there is a clause in Angel's contract that states if voided, all gifts must be returned to Val.

Imagine the Hotel celebrating Angel's contract being voided or removed only for Angel to remember that clause and rushing to see his baby piggy is already gone, reduced to ash or maybe whisked away to Val's studio. And Val would send mocking and threatening pictures of him and the pig to Angel, holding Fat Nuggets over Angel's head in an attempt to get him back under his control.
