So, after the first watch, what made me go back to really look at Pomni's progression in the episode was Caine's remark about not being able to keep track of who's a human and who's an NPC. Throughout most of the episode, Pomni is understandably jaded about the entire situation, shutting down all of Ragatha's attempts at helping her feel better about it all. Pomni also puts up a barrier between her and the game as a whole by calling out all their adventures as just being LARPing. The weird thing is that her barrier only comes down when she has a heart-to-heart with Gumigoo, an NPC. From a real-world perspective, that's just someone finding their comfort character, right? However, I feel like Caine's remark isn't just about himself keeping track of separating characters from real people, but for the audience to do so as well. He even acknowledges that the crew may have their favorite NPCs, comfort characters, but they need to remain just characters. I think it's just as funny that he then goes on to make a comment about how long it's been since he drank water, which also comes off as a message to the viewers. Then, what came off as a subtle hint to solidify all this is when Ragatha is trying to help Pomni feel better after Gumigoo's "death." None of the sentiments about him potentially coming back as a reused character snapped her out of her shock, but the mention of Kaufmo's funeral did because that was a real person who (as far as our current understanding of things) experienced a real death.

Sidenote:

There can be a point made about how Ragatha and Jax also interact with the games. While Ragatha is going along with the experience like an average player, Jax is going the murder hobo route, each showing different feelings about everything not being real.

In today's episode of "Adventures in Adulting", I remind myself to do research before purchasing games that I think look cool because I've gone and purchased "Bomb Rush Cyberfunk" only to learn there is no character creator. Love the art, soundtrack, and overall feel! Just would've loved to have my own character. Stay tuned next time for another installment of "Adventures in Adulting."
