A champion's Christmas
***********************************************************************
Teloise fanfic inspired by my convos with @doonymoon and including all canon ships, translated to english. Based within season 3.
***********************************************************************
The cold was biting the cheeks of the players training on the World-Cup ship. The Tek Nos were gritting their teeth as they stretched, Gabriel had already bundled up in all the layers of clothing he owned, and Eloise was hopping on her feet in her goal.
"Come on, guys, let's stretch and pack up for tonight. I'll expect you in good shape for tomorrow!" ordered Tag, who was making a valiant effort to appear unaffected by the frosty December wind.
Jeremy, similarly attempting to hide his shivers, instantly replied:
"Hey hey hey! Wait a minute, Captain. Tomorrow I'm off duty, unreachable, and on a sacred mission to compensate in chocolate for all the disgusting cafeteria meals this year!"
Tag gave him a confused look before Gabriel reminded him,
"That's right, tomorrow is December 25th! I forgot about Christmas Day too. But don't worry, Tag, we can practice together at the institute, just the two of us. It'll be just like old times."
Tag nodded at him, a little disillusioned, but smiled as he tossed him the ball.
"Just like old times then…"
They finished stretching and began their journey back, greeting Shark on the boat's stairs.
Eloise and Samira, trailing behind the group, cast saddened glances towards their two teammates.
"I guess Gabriel's parents won't be coming to see him this year either," Samira lamented. Although she came from a family that didn't celebrate Christmas, the institutional holidays of the period remained a precious time for family reunion, and she loved the way the whole city was decorated with light and warmth.
"Yeah… but at the same time, otherwise, Tag would have been completely alone. I don't get the impression they celebrated Christmas much at the institute," Eloise replied, lost in thought.
Her parents had an extravagant party planned, as they did every year, excessive and impersonal, filled with high-society guests she couldn't stand, but who she would have to put up with for the entire afternoon. She was already pouting.
"Woah, you look miserable Eloise. Did training ruin you or what?" Shark called out, appearing at their side, hands in his pockets as always.
"It's nothing, don't worry, Shark," the countess reassured him. An idea then crossed her mind. "Say, do you celebrate Christmas?"
"Christmas?" The question took him aback, but Eloise's sincere innocence amused him. "Of course! We meet in my secret palace under the port and we get out the caviar of course!… Don't worry, I'm messing with you. And anyway, I'm lucky, no need to bother decorating when the city lights up by itself."
If Shark's circumstances were tough, he didn't let it show.
"Well, that's exactly it! How about we celebrate Christmas together this year, as a street football family?" Eloise suggested, throwing a knowing look at Samira, who already seemed delighted by the idea.
"Uhh, where would we do that? On the boat, you mean?" Shark rubbed his chin for a moment, and smiled. "I see you what you're up to. You want me to spend my only day off organizing a huge celebration for all the World Cup teams, right?" He snorted, then nodded. "That's a great idea. However, I'm going to need some help."
The girls agreed.
Samira went to catch Jeremy and pulled him aside to let him in on their plans. For this to be a real Christmas party the whole team should be together, and they weren't about to let Jeremy go bury himself at his grandmother's. It took a bit of convincing, but he finally gave in to those beautiful eyes, and even offered to come with desserts.
Eloise took it upon herself to send a message to the TekkNos, who quickly jumped at the chance to avoid an afternoon of babysitting at their parent's.
They all agreed to surprise the two Blues staying at the institute.
On the evening of the 24th, Port-Marie was already beginning to sparkle with festive decorations, and the windows lit up as families gathered together to eat and celebrate. At the Riffler Institute, Gabriel fell asleep with his cell phone in his hand, still waiting for his parents' call. Tag pretended to sleep as he watched the shutters rustle in the winter wind. He cursed this celebration again for the 14th time, his jaw clenched, suppressing the emotion that rippled through his chest. As midnight approached, his phone buzzed, and he unclenched his fist to read a message from Eloise:
"Meet me tomorrow night at the boat, Captain," followed by a winking emoticon.
The message made him smile, and a wave of warmth washed over him, loosening his throat and letting him lull into a dream with a sigh.
The next day, the two boys wandered between the courtyard and the dormitories, trying to pass the time until the evening, both having been discreetly invited to the boat. Gabriel suspected the invitation was no coincidence, but Tag was too preoccupied with the idea of a date with the Countess to give it much thought. As always, his mind cycled through disaster scenarios justifying their breakup, and anxiety mingled with his anticipation. He was going to end up frozen and withdrawn again, like always, he blamed himself.
The rest of the team, meanwhile, was scrambling to collect lanterns and christmas trees in town, sweets and drinks from grandparents, and a load of borrowed cutlery to add to the items already available on the ship. The idea had appealed to all the teams staying in the port, and the enthusiasm could be felt throughout the boat, as the players not celebrating Christmas were still happy to party, and the others far from their families delighted to share the occasion with their teammates.
Eloise was easily able to slip away from Villa Riffler, amidst the throng of high-society. Samira, Jeremy, and the TekkNos enjoyed lunch with their respective families before gleefully heading back to the harbor.
By the time evening arrived, the boat was glowing with tinsel and christmas lights, and ringing with music and cheerful chatter. Sinead and her crew had brought out the drums and a microphone, taking turns to belt out the worst Christmas songs in a bad mix of rock 'n' roll and Maria Carrey.
Eloise had stolen two bags full of Santa hats from her parents' stash, and Samira had brought back the winter sweaters her grandmother had knitted with the intention of threatening the boys to wear them. Jeremy had hung mistletoe everywhere, winking mischievously at everyone that saw him do it.
By the time Tag and Gabriel arrived in the common room on the ship, their mouths were gagging, their eyes wide not knowing where to turn before being assaulted by a flood of arms surrounding them as the whole team yelled out "MERRY CHRISTMAS!".
"I knew something was up!" Gabriel called out, giving Eloise a knowing look. She winked and invited him to some cake, where he was immediately joined by Fatou, who planted a kiss on his cheek and a Christmas hat on his dreads. They both quickly slip away to the impromptu dance floor, nodding their heads in rythm to the music.
Tekk and No had come up a juggling game to compete for the best candy, and were already challenging all members of the opposing teams, with Cartoon acting as referee and crowd-pleaser.
Jeremy, as always, returned to clowning around at the table to make Samira laugh, before resisting her dare to wear her Grandma's sweater. The two chased each other for several minutes before Samira cornered him and pulled it over his head, accompanied by two kisses that made him blush.
Eloise chuckled as she watched them, her eyes darting to see her captain's reaction. Tag stood there for a moment, a moved smile stuck in spite of himself on his face, his eyes glistening. Not knowing what to do with his hands, which quickly returned to their pockets, he slipped away discreetly before emotion could overwhelm him.
Coming out of the main hall, he breathed deeply a few times before letting himself trudge through the corridors onto the deck, taking advantage of everyone being inside to regain his composure alone. He strolled back and forth across the ship a while before spotting Shark leaning on the edge of the boat, sipping a drink and looking out to sea.
Night had fallen, and the air was cold, but the stars shone almost as brightly as the garlands of Port-Marie.
Tag joined his friend on the boat-edge, following his gaze toward the horizon. They stood there for a moment, sharing a knowing silence, understanding each other.
Tag broke the silence first. "I can't believe you went to all this trouble."
Shark shrugged nonchalantly. "It wasn't much really. Actually… it was Eloise's idea."
Tag hid the smile creeping back up his cheeks. He took a few breaths before saying: "It's not too bad a day, after all… for Christmas, I mean…"
"Yep, not too bad. It's okay." Shark smiled, sipping from his glass again.
Tag let his shoulders sag and in a more nervous tone he continued : "It's kind of nice… Being with all of you… for Christmas. You guys… You're like family to me. All of you. I…"
Shark put a hand on his shoulder while staring into his cup: "You don't need to say it… I know. You're my brother Tag. Merry Christmas…"He handed his cup over.
"Merry Christmas Shark." Tag grinned and took a sip before handing it back, letting the feeling of warmth and comfort settle in his stomach.
A short silence passed again as they admired the sky.
Finally Shark continued:
"My cup is empty. I'm gonna battle Cartoon for something to chew on. You should find Eloise; she's the one who wanted to surprise you… She really cares about you, you know?" He gave him an encouraging smile before heading back to the common room entrance.
Tag started wandering back through the corridors when Eloise appeared from behind the door with a plate of cake in her hand, knocking into him. They both stumbled and fell, Eloise landing on his chest as she attempted to save the plate. They looked at each other and blushed as Eloise quickly fumbled back up and Tag stood up somewhat fussing about her: "Err… Sorry… Are you okay?…I didn't see you coming…" Their cheeks were both red as Eloise patted down her outfit and Tag averted his gaze while passing a nervous hand through his hair.
"I'm fine.. umm I was just bringing you some cake. The guys are fighting over it back there so there isn't going to be much left soon."Her eyes avoided his out of embarrassment. It had felt like a good idea a few seconds ago, but now she felt kind of dumb for going to the trouble.
"Y… You're awesome."
Of all the responses Eloise had not been expecting that. She looked up at him slightly stunned. He was finally staring straight back at her, strangely focused, but his cheeks were still on fire and his shoulders were tensed like wood. She remained confused for a second before noticing the mistletoe over their heads. The Countess's eyes wandered between her captain and the sprig of leaves tied to the ceiling, at a loss for what to do next. Then, not wanting to force Tag into anything, she started to back away from under it but was stopped as his hand darted out of his pocket and gently replaced her loose strand of hair to the side of her cheek.
He was still looking at her, his breathing visibly shallow. She couldn't help but smile as she took his hand and pressed it against her cheek, closing her eyes. Before she could open them again she felt his lips brush tentatively against hers. Their noses touched as they looked up at each other, and before he could panic she pressed her lips against his, returning a second kiss. His arms fell around her waist as if they had been longing to be there all day, and as she looked up at him again, he pressed his forehead affectionately against hers. Eloise's mind raced. Tag had always been so shy about them, so stubbornly withdrawn. But in this moment, his eyes left no trace of doubt. He was staring at her lovingly, as they both remained entranced with each-other for a moment. They were abruptly snapped out of it from the crashing sound of the plate on the floor. It had slid out of her hand.
As reality sunk back in, Tag's hands darted back into his pockets and his eyes stared intently at his shoes, his cheeks still red. Eloise inched a step away and started fixing her hair nervously.
"Ummm…So, Merry Christmas…" he managed out. She chuckled before taking his arm and leading him to her side. "Merry Christmas Captain."
She started heading towards the common room but Tag tugged at her hand.
"Umm… the stars… look really pretty…you, i mean, WE should go and look at them or something…"
"W-What?" she replied, taken aback once more.
He held her gaze for an instant, slightly hesitant. "You know, because its Christmas, and that's what people do… sometimes?… on Christmas?"
She answered with an amused smile and followed his lead.
They went back to the edge of the deck, looking towards the sea, the stars now reflecting perfectly in the dark water. Her hand was still entwined in his. She let her head fall slowly on his shoulder. "Sorry about the cake." she whispered.
"Don't mind. I wasn't really hungry. Besides… this… this a lot nicer."
She blushed and replaced her cheek against him comfortably.
"Eloise… Thanks. This is the best Christmas I ever had."
They listen to the waves for a while, their hearts fluttering as they let themselves enjoy the evening together, content.

Un Noël de champion
***********************************************************************
Teloise fanfic inspired by my convos with @doonymoon and including all canon ships. might translate to english tomorrow. Based within season 3.
***********************************************************************

Aha that's super valid ^ ^, these two are pretty toxic also if you think about how Tag behaves. It says something that to me it's the tension that makes their relationship interesting to me.

@louve-garoue why hide the good stuff in the tags ? ^^ LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK
to be fair, almost any response would have been better...
@elmaxlys already made #perfect rant posts about F2RX and I agree 100% with everything they said, but I never got to write my rage down myself and so here are my top grievances with Foot 2 rue Extreme in order of pain :
Disrespecting previous canon :
Tag is a mockery of his previous self. Essentially stripping away most of his personality, they also added super random and really improbable things such as : Having learned horse-riding (WHEN?!), suddenly having learned to play the piano, and MOST importantly not being an exceptionnal football player (HIM NOT DOMINATING THE FIELD WHEN PLAYING WITH THE KIDS IS JUST NOT BELIEVABLE). Tag had enough of a story with 3 seasons and a comic, they didn't need to add all the stupid extra stuff as if they were trying to invent him a personality (#his room being full of random shit that has no reference to the previous stuff).
He only met his father when he was 14.... The original story made a point of digging into serious themes and the emotional struggle of the characters, as football gave the catharsis that helped them get through it. There is NO WAY that at 17, Tag's issues have all disappeared and he is now a 100% healthy confident and nurturing adult.
Pablo's name is changed to Ramon, and his whole story seems to have disappeared. His relationship with Tag is as if he'd been around his whole life. The fact that he theoretically has been captured and IMPRISONED is shown nowhere.
They basically didn't want to bother with Foot2Rue and the story it had told, so why add the previous characters at all?
Superficial themes and story :
Foot 2 rue was a kid's show about playing football in the street, right?
WRONG.
It's a story about growing up in an unfair, chaotic society and football helping them bond and find hope.
The whole point is that this childhood pass-time was their resilience against everything around them ;
- where they were unequal in their life, on the playing field everyone was the same, had the same opportunities and rules,
-when they were alone in life, on the playing field they had a family,
-and when their life showed cruelty and malevolence, the game taught them empathy, understanding and respect.
THAT was the "dream" of street football, that's why they call it a dream throughout most of the original show.
The point of the world championship wasn't about winning or being the "coolest" or most athletic player, it was about bringing this shared "dream" to unite all the kids growing up in this world.
Extreme Football has gone completely beside this point.
The only motivation for the team is winning and looking cool. What makes a great player to them is just their athletic ability. They go through regular childhood troubles that have no deeper meaning or demonstration of the world and the society they live in. (and the resolutions for these are pretty shallow and clumsy). They seem to live in a weird utopian/futuristic city that is super polished, and so NO real-world issues can be adressed.
Basically the show is JUST a kid's show about playing football... how sad.
The animation and chara design :
I am not an anti-CGI, only traditional 2D purist. I was pretty excited the new adaptation was going to be CGI, as I had also a good memory of the early CGI in kids shows like code Lyoko, and Galactic football.
but DAMN does it look bad.
The main characters design is bland, but that's ok for the main characters, and the other characters are pretty much as much caricatures as the original Street football characters were, but the animation is INCONSISTENT, the lighting/shading seems unequal from one episode to the next, the environment is BORING and polished to a point where it just looks extremely fake.
I already went on a bit about what they did to Tag, but damn the redesign just doesn't work.... once again, the direction for the character just seems VERY random, as Tag has never been into fashion why the hell would he start wearing a bandana, and live with one side of his joggings rolled up? and like, why would his face become ROUNDER with age?
(This goes the same way for Eloise whose appearance in the last episode both made me a little happy but also hurt my eyes)
The new characters/main characters :
As the world and the narrative doesn't give them much to work with, obviously it is hard to be engaged and learn to like them.
Obviously the main problem is Samy, whose hurtful words/actions are not grounded in any deep story making him just a petty brat. Often his harmful behavior is not challenged, especially with the way he treats Tag which drives me nuts.
The worst part is that there is POTENTIAL for a deep dynamic that could have made for a better story that adresses re-building broken families but... No. He is a brat but in a vacuum so it doesn't evolve into an interesting arc or even make sense really.
(They could have made an interesting parallel between him dealing with his parent's separating and having to accept a new unwanted family member and Tag dealing with the realities of family that he never got to experience, and integrating into a family life that he WANTED but doesn't know. Also there could have been references to Tag's memories of "Pti Dragon"....)
I could go on for longer but this post would never end....

okay last addition to this ramble but...
I can't help think about how Jeremy and Tag are in constant competition for love/attention (in a general sense), this is why they have such a rivalry (thankfully mostly friendly).
Jeremy is a text-book desperate attention seeker, always showing off, needing the spotlight, to the point where he would jeopardize his future because he can't stop being the "class clown".
He deals with a constant unrequited need for love/attention and also carries deep insecurities coming from abandonment issues (his dad), which makes him hot-headed, competitive, self-destructive and with a tendency to lash out when feeling challenged.
He is basically stuck in that child-mindset where he still fighting for attention and validation (also why he tends to be childish and struggles to "grow up"), and his character arc in the show (og show) is basically him learning to take on responsibility, and getting to the point where he gets love and friendship not by constantly standing out, but by being part of a whole (a team).
Tag wrestles with many of the same issues of abandonment and unrequited love, except that because of him being an orphan and growing up alone (mostly), he's not stuck in the "child-acts-out-to-get-parents-attention" phase as he has had to be his own parent.
Taking on responsibility comes naturally to him, and he has many moments where, (despite him being terrible and toxic in his personal relationships), he shows maturity (forgiving Ben, the way he treats pti dragon, etc).
On the other hand he is emotionally walled up and shut in within himself, deals with most of his issues by pushing people away, and completely overreacts to anything that might trigger his insecurities. He struggles with accepting love from others when it means letting his guard down. (# if Eloise even glances at someone else he goes through the 5 stages of grief and becomes the ultimate edgelord drama queen) and does have a certain level of needing to prove his worth.
Tag sees a part of himself in Jeremy, which is both triggering and makes them butt-heads, but also makes Tag one of the characters that understands Jeremy the best imo, and is probably why Tag trusts Jeremy to replace him as captain of the team. For Jeremy, I think this is also why Tag is one of only people he could respect and accept as a team captain.
Why does Tag resent Eloise so much at the beginning of Foot 2 rue
Tag is mostly neutral/friendly with every other character he meets for the first time, especially if they meet by helping each other out.
But with Eloise, he is already mad with her before their first conversation in the show even takes place.
SO rambling time : WHY is it?
The show lets us know towards the end of the episode that Tag knows who Eloise is because of her family, and essentially pre-judges her for her priviledged situation. BUT, Tag doesn't hold the same kind of anger towards other characters that are better off than him, (maybe because that would be almost everyone in the first season except for the sharks).
He is friendly and understanding with other characters that ARE in a more comfortable situations than him, and generally seems to want people in his surroundings to be better off. Everyone he has issues with are because they actively are trying to stop street football (or being mean or conceited), but when he interacts with famous people such as Fede or the mayor, or even Eloises parents, he is not angry or mad.
Eloise, and ESPECIALLY Eloise, makes him insecure.
my headcannon of course is that of all the people he thinks are from different worlds, Eloise is the one where it bothers him. Her being unattainable to him (in his mind) hurts.
To quote him from early episodes : "She's a countess, I doubt she'd want to hang out with us (me)".
In french he says "se salir les mains avec nous" translated directly as "getting her hands dirty with us", a statement that refers both to the fact that they might be getting in trouble with the police and he doesn't think she would be willing to do that, but also because he sees her hanging out with them as breaking a rule that he had set in his mind, as he believes them (or himself at least) to be unworthy of her time.
which brings me to the headcanon that Tag had noticed Eloise way before they ever meet in season 1, and had been angry-crushing on her, never thinking he would ever get to talk to her, let alone even be friends and in a relationship together.
Exhibit A :
He knew who she was immediatly, but he also noticed her arriving immediatly; I headcannon while trying to secure the count's statue in order to sneak out of the Institute's ceremony, that he stops because he sees her.
He might be watching the director, but he could also be watching HER :
#when you're trying to sneak around but your secret crush has arrived and damn it NOW IS NOT THE TIME.
then, not only does she EXIST in the crowd near him, but she actually tries to interact with him/help him.
At this point Tag is just like "what why, leave me alone, don't " and cannot fathom her helping. He only stabilizes the statue because Gabriel assisted and understood what she was trying to do, and he immediatly tries to IGNORE her and acts as if it was all gabriel's idea.
Ignore her and act cool...
He is so ANGRY whereas he should be relieved, but it just annoys him so much that she's there.
That is the most TRIGGERED kid i've seen just because someone helped him. All I see here is mister "she's too good for me" having to swallow his feelings...

He does get angry with Jeremy often, but Jeremy IS provocative, and does stupid things, so to me it feels like Tag's anger sort of has a reasoning. (Although he could just be insecure because Jeremy also challenges him idk). But Eloise really does nothing to provoke Tag, and in season 1 he repeatedly lashes out against her for no good reason (up until they start dating) which is why i think its him being attracted to her and not knowing how to deal with it. Also, Jeremy has a tendency to lash out just like Tag, i really think those two bothe struggle with deep insecurities, maybe because they both are missing a father figure? :)

*united in rage*
GUYS I'm here for it. thanks for bringing your spice to my endless f2rx salt.
BTW if yall want to do a "FIX IT" challenge, be it with headcanons or fanart, i'm game 0 .0)
@elmaxlys already made #perfect rant posts about F2RX and I agree 100% with everything they said, but I never got to write my rage down myself and so here are my top grievances with Foot 2 rue Extreme in order of pain :
