Portland, OR - 5 months later

Wow. It’s been quite some time since I updated you all, but better late than never. I moved myself, my girlfriend, our dog, and the bookshop all the way to Portland, OR from Houston, TX. The weather has been the biggest change and we’re slowly making new friends, so I’m very hopeful about us and the bookshop. 

I actually found some great books that are currently being prepped for the website. Also, the girlfriend and I are in the midst of creating new and exciting book-related items for the shop also. We can’t wait to show you!

You may be wondering how I made it to Portland, OR and the answer is that I made the hard decision of leaving my gig as a public librarian and decided to pursue corporate librarianship instead. It’s not as glamorous as hanging out with cute babies all day, but I do appreciate the opportunity. 

I am also pursuing a second master’s degree for archiving and records management. Some might call me insane for going to school again, but I actually enjoy it!

Anyhow, this was just a quick update on me and the bookshop and an apology for not updating it more often. I made the mistake of taking three grad level courses, moving to a new state, and starting a new job all at once. Don’t worry! More stuff soon!

Thinking about The Last Bookstore

I’ve been here. I wasn’t that impressed with all the Instagram hipsters blocking the narrow walkways because they just HAD to prove they were there, the endless shelves of overpriced used books (seriously, almost cover price), and the need to check in my bag while I see other women walk on in with bigger ones.

Can you tell I wouldn’t come here again? Lol. Great effort by the owner, but maybe he should have just made this building a gallery for book art instead because while the Instagram photo ops are neat, there are much cozier indie bookshops out there. And if you want to visit an amazing indie bookshop, go to Portland, OR and see Powell’s.

At the cusp of having my dream job... and I said no.

Since I could remember, I've always wanted to work in this really cool library in Seattle, WA. I would live my Pacific Northwest dreams and drink coffee in the rain 90% of the year. On a whim, I applied and guess what? They actually asked me for an interview. A life goal, really... and I turned it down. I thanked Seattle Public Library and said that maybe our paths will cross again in the future.

Why? Because despite wanting to escape Texas since I first got here, I realized it wasn't the state of Texas I hated, but the state of mind I was in. Now, I am happier on a level I never thought possible. 🌈 I've made friends that I hope will become lifelong ones, I could eat just about anything I could want (diversity!), I play music, I host a rad book club, event planning for my library system is hard, but rewarding, and I think I can do some good work as a librarian HERE.

Also, I'm very flattered that King County Library System (2011 library of the year), Denver Public Library, and now Seattle Public Library have all approached me in less than a year. I feel pretty good right now. I think I'm on my way to my ultimate goal of being listed as a Mover and Shaker by Library Journal and maybe... just maybe... Library Journal's Librarian of the Year. 😈
