Watching more sci-fi stuff recently and it's really funny/interesting how many shows just keep reusing the exact same conflict of "alien species is offended the human officer disrespected them in their culture" and I fear it ONLY actually makes sense in the thought process of: "This whole federation is about peace and respect and planets get highly researched to prevent this sort of thing and yet it seems my culture wasn't as thoughfully studied so you probably think we're less deserving than other species bc you didn't put in the same amount of effort"
Like I don't think I've ever heard a character just point out any obvious reason why they would make such a mistake, like..being literally from a different planet. Like never once "oh sorry, I grew up on earth it's different there"
Like they'll be an angry mob every other plotline over something or a trail or any level of scuffle or disagreement and there never seems to be a native alien to that location sticking up for them either that just goes "hey guys they're literally not from our planet why would they know that"
And maybe it'd be more interesting if the exact same scenario just had more..diversity? In reaction and responses?? Why is every species' social norm just to get upset and angry and threaten violence and why is every protagonists' response always either crude escalation or a really shallowly worded descalation narratively framed like professional level attempts.
Like supposedly high level ranking space officers of ship whateverthefuck have to speak like customer service workers to every last creature they encounter and don't get to ask for respect from anyone other than people in their same work.
Also yeah I'd get it if someone just accidentally said curses to your whole bloodline to die in space hell by sneezing in the wrong octave, bc you have some alien religion where you fully believe or that is actually going to happen if you don't undo it with some ritual but why is like the alien species equivalent of flipping the bird 馃枙 always met with a death threat it just makes every other species look unintelligent and unempathetic. Is that intentiona???? Bc typically these shows will always have a message about "despite our differences we should all get along!! Except every other thing different from humans is going to fight you tooth and nail to let you do that and act really, really dumb and mean about it." Like is that intentional?? Is that the point?? Getting along with people even when it's hard to the point of next to no self advocacy what so ever?? Like that can't be it because sometimes they like legit kill some of those guys when the situation can't descalate.
And like again for shows that frequently have the exact opposite message it could sooooo easily be used for xenophobia propaganda but any time I see that exact same plot I literally cannot stop thinking humans are better about that sort of thing. All humans. Globally. I could literally go to any country and fuck up something the same amount as any of these characters and they would not run me out of the country unless I like, broke the entire great wall of China to dust. Like yeah, understandable.
But if someone came to America and somehow learned English so, so so so so so badly they accidentally said "Fuck you I hope you and your mother die" I'd be shocked, confused, upset of course but the second they go "OMG WAIT that's not what I meant to say 馃槵" at most I'd find it skeptical? Still weird? But I'm not threatening to kill them over it, and if like a whole entire public servant team of them was like "yes they didn't mean that, sorry!" I should probably be painted like the asshole if I still keep flipping tables and saying I'm going to planetary war over it.
Like that's the realistic reaction which I'm aware isn't entertaining to use. You know what else isn't entertaining? If the most EXTREME and angry reaction was the only thing they ever used. OH WAIT.

Big huge rambling peice where I lost the point I was trying to make I think it's about consuming media when you have empathy issues or something idk
Show creators look directly into the eyes of their audience and blink in a version of morse code akin to a dead language and 3 smoke signals in the rain to go " hey.... For entertainment purposes we're gonna write this kid getting abused/neglected/some unjustice happening to them. It'd bum everyone out if we took it seriously and made the whole story about that or write an arc where we take that seriously or ever address it happening so we're not actually gonna focus on that, but this story also doesn't work without it ///implied/// there. Which sounds super serious until I say like 90% of stories that involve children need some degree of child neglect happening to give the characters room to do anything. You wouldn't have KidsNextDoor or CampCamp or Clearance or Craig of the Creek or whatever the fuck if all kids were written with adults who knew where they were at and what they were doing. Like most of the time this isn't even a problem that's just how the fictional entertainment game is. It's fictional and is not showcasing reality.
But maybe the Mortys from Rick and Morty will just have to be written like an alien species getting oppressed by the Ricks instead of a little boy getting abused by his grandpa because the story is about sci fi and has to put everything through that lense first and maybe we can focus on the 2 main ones and paint it like that SOMETIMES. Candace from Phineas and Ferb is gonna be called crazy by her mom and her mom is never going to be home or involved with the home a singular day of summer, because the story can't go that dark but it needs that implied for the plot to work. And so you understand completely why they don't go there. But it's still just sitting over there.
And then things start getting less understandable. Maybe something awful is implied not for the plot to keep working, so in a sense for even a peice of media to keep going but can't be addressed because it doesn't fit the tone, but for a quick joke.
Maybe the show does take things seriously sometimes, but not for that character, or not that topic
and you understand nothing is wrong with that inherently it just makes //you// /feel/ bad. It just feels unfair.
That's not how this media is supposed to be enjoyed or taken, but to some fictional characters your gonna get really attached to one of them and your never going to be able to get it out of the back of your mind any time you see them. And your a baby if you bring it up during the wrong circumstances btw.

Rick and Morty kinda notorious for on-the fly writing that tries to make the viewer feel like it had a coherent idea to beginning to end like most/alot of shows do to keep things consistent and coherent but in itself causes consistencies in the narrative.
Like sometimes Rick (referring to all of them here as a collective group, not just the one the story follows individually) is treated like a God by the story itself, or actually he's just some dick like the rest of us who happens to be smart enough to cause big damage and gets an undeserved ego for it, actually he's an unstoppable force, actuactually his ego is vaild, actually he's- so on.
And yaknow what, fan content creativity scope wize that's really fun. Analysis from multiple angles wize that's really fun. Writing quality from the cannon source material wize it's awful but it's like a flaw in something you can critique and still find something to do with it.
Like in the episode with all the Morty clones it doesn't really ask the viewer to think about Ricks' treatment Mortys' much deeper than what's already been established multiple times. "They're Rick and Morty!!! but Rick is bad to Morty :( so when you have alot of Ricks and Mortys it gets even worse!! Rick and Mortyyy!!" Because sometimes "Rick" is just this unstoppable force and Morty is just this cosmicly destined sidekick but also Rick is sometimes a God and he made that destiny for him by hand.
Like sometimes the writers and Rick himself place him too highly and it takes something away from his character. That he's a victim of himself, as a force of nature is, and that's not the same as being the cause somehow. Dissolving him partially of this accountability. This is half pointed out in one of evil Morty's speeches.
I actually think alot of Ricks aren't that smart but cling onto the reputation of themselves as a collective so they can all take credit for all of the few's best traits. Utilizing Clones/Multiverse Ricks constantly as enemies and gags leaves them frequently reduced to easily defeated jokes. They'll be on screen literally dying in mass easily preventable deaths. All while each individually having basically the same sized ego.
And the show's almost separation from Morty as his grandson and not his sidekick/partner in arms. Like this guy didn't just span across dimensions clinging onto better versions of himself in any facet he could find it and drag a version of a hypothetical grandson or his literal blood grandson he watched be born and visited and everything he could be to him inbetween into his mess to use and mistreat.
Like the individual Rick the story follows is one off the better ones, it's more complicated. But the Ricks collectively get framed sometimes almost like this artificial species. Like a race of aliens who are wrong for oppressing the Morty's but think there's a natural pecking order at play.
When they're not. That's a human man who grew up on earth and sits on, stabs, enslaves, tortures, another human child who either is or resembles the idea of his grandson. And we're supposed to believe this is unfathomably smart man too but once you put the human element back into his character and his dynamic with Morty it's suddenly much more disturbing than just sci-fi made up alien genocide it paints a picture of an abuser who just wide spanned his abuse to such a ridiculous size it didn't look recognizable anymore.
And I think the difference in how Ricks and Mortys tend to name themselves is so important. It's nearly always [Adjective Rick.] But Morties are often just [Adjective] or [Morty] interchangeably amongst themselves. With Ricks it's like, an ego thing. Being a Rick makes me the smartest man I have to identify with that!! It's a title!! But I can't just be like all the other smartest mans around me I need to stick out somehow!!
But Morty's (when in their own groups father away from Ricks' control) seem much more aware they're all just the same guy, but they're different /people./ That the Ricks don't even respect them as that much, so they find a deeper appreciation for their own humanity they're being denied. They huddle together as like a society of children ripped away from their homes by their abusive grandfather, finding safety with each other understanding they all have the same trauma and experiences and quirks and looks and baaasically being the same guy!! But through their personhood they have differences they appreciate and boost with each other.
So with frequently wish-washy and changing narrative direction all the time and a show that never even knows what it's trying to say about nihilism or not it instead gets painted as !!!!!!!!!!!! """Clone Mortys should live on remote planets by themselves bc making silly little Morty towns is immature you guys :3""""

this is probably my 3rd? ask about her, but I love love love Ester(?) your neil mom im literally obsessed also kinda in love
I always feel like I have to draw something first to show proper appreciation for asks like these but I have no energy to start one and I've been thinking about her and Carl sm lately I need an excuse to infodump so I kiss you real big on the forehead!!!
Esther and Carl divorced angst.. (I know what I'm setting myself up for by making angst that involves Carl and idc if nobody takes it srsly lmaoo) (I also thought about using their gender genderbent designs for animatics to get the idea across bc I feel like more ppl would empathize with Carl if he wasn't bald/hj)
Like the lyrics "you'll never get away from the sound of a woman that loves you" Like how Carl still wants to be with her in a way and regrets that they fell out of love and he believes she stopped putting in the effort emotionally with them and wasn't willing to try and has resentments about that and venting out that sentiment somewhere with himself like. Good luck listening to that music i ever shared again or going to that cafe again or thinking about that campus or driving by that neighborhood or house or LOOKING AT OUR SON'S FACE without ever thinking about me again because you can shut me out but you'll never actually get rid of me. And it's TRUEEE there's reminders of what they had literally everywhere she goes and a part of her DOES mourn that it didn't work out but she knows it can't with the people they've become. They can't even be in a room anymore without arguing.
And thinking about her never using the radio while she works in her home office usually but she was using it for something once and one of his favorite songs coming on the radio while she was up late working on some blueprints and the audio being all muffled until she turns it up and it fades into this edit of them dancing together on one of their early dates when they were young

WORLD BUILDING!!! FOR MY OC SHIT!! lessgo
Quinametzin's Song.
A planet from a different dimension. In a size to rival our Jupiter's. It is rumored in their mythology whoever created a place called "hell" A race of demons were created to inhabit it but were deemed unworthy and remade. Those who were tossed away for being too uncontrollable, unstable, unfit, were dumped onto an already inhabited planet. What or where exactly "hell" Is, is not something ever clearly known in their mythology.
They mixed with the locals of elvish, orcs, gnomes, gargoyle ect alike, some of which not even being humanoid or having a known name, until millions of years later ancestral demon blood and much more was commonplace to have different levels of magic within the vast amount of species.
One group of demons from the start decided they were superior, and would not acclimate to the planet, but rule it. They mated only with each other to grow their numbers before they resorted to inbreeding briefly in their history. They then created a spell that would strip all other DNA except for the desired out of a vessel to be used as a tool to further their reign. A painful process that left the victim weak. ((A good comparison is like humans evolved from fish. So imagine that incredibly small amount of fish DNA left in you being the foundation of a spell to turn you into a sickly fish since everything else just got sucked out of you.))
This later caused a second spell to be developed to procreate a genetically unique fully demon child with the victim's DNA without traditional methods being the only option. Some participated in these rituals willingly others did not.
The reign of these demons started to become more concentrated and became a singular family lineage their lifespan lasting thousands of years averagely. Their power immense and their cruelty even worse. They destroyed any historical evidence of any other kingdoms' or rulers political powers. Some remain, and are at constant war trying to hold steady. Only saved by their planet's sheer size putting enough distance between them for safety. As this tactic was in full swing the planet was renamed Quinametzin's Song and the previous name of the world was forgotten by most of it's people and it's history.
Despite all other species, groups, and kingdoms having a shared enemy there is still disagreements and prejudices between them. Small villages developed to be the most diverse and accepting, finding survival in trying to be too small to be noticed, and just big enough to be self sufficient. No society can slow down it's own evolution, these small villages tending to have a lifespan of a few hundred years at best before being snuffed out.
With the large size of the planet and multiple species, cultures took a vast array of different shapes. The world's technological growth is stunted due to the demons rule and never ending amount of war. Like a cancerous leech their power echos harming every aspect of this world they touch. Leaving the rarest of high technology to be on par with earth's industrial revolution at best, and a large portion of creatures to still operate under the same hunter/gatherer methods they used when the demons first arrived.
"The daughter Serphila, of the demons' pure rule." (name available to update or change) Marked a dark change in their pride taken history. As her large family believed they were all superior to the rest of the world and deserved it's worship and it's obedience from every inhabitant, she saw herself even above them due to her strength in the magic carried through them.
Next in line to the throne after her father, she didn't wait to inherit it before exuding her power. Having such a long lifespan, and the spell or device only used once, it's still unsure what exactly happened that day. She created a doomsday device or spell that could burn through time and space itself and destroy in an instant. First this was used aimlessly, fired out into nothing to hit a target only destiny would decide.
Unfamiliar, monsterous creatures the likes no one had ever seen started to rain from the sky and crash into the dirt. Surviving the impact, crawling out and massacreing every surrounding living thing as a revenge. Nobody knew where they came from, but they were the only thing to ever be seen actually managing to kill a demon. The family fought and dwindled until only a handful of themselves remained. Most of which were the oldest of them, and Serphila herself. None of the alien monsters survived on the planet.
She then turned the same cause of destruction towards Quinametzin's Song. Destroying over half of the planet itself and leaving only a fraction of it floating through space. Billions of people dead, cultures and societies erased in an instant, something mysterious from the battle leftover from the monsters holding the ecosystem together. The ground and sky shifted hue forever. The land leftover still much larger than earth and holding onto itself, but so much more still gone forever in unfathomable tragedy that day. Entire species went immediately extinct.
A large amount of the kingdoms still fighting against the demon's reign surrendered.
For being the cause of their family's near annihilation, Serphila's father ordered her to make heirs thousands of years earlier than what tradition would have her do and to immediately surrender the throne to one of them as soon as possible. His age catching up to him quickly, he decreed with all his authority she would never get to rule longer than one heir's length to reach maturity. Her time as the supreme being was to be cut short and her turn in their family's holy lineage to be skipped.
She picked a victim for the ritual and produced a singular heir who shortly after, killed her while still in his infancy. The young demon being found next to his mother, with the skin and muscular tissue of her face having been eaten. The mystery and shock around her death leaving her closest constitutes to hide as many details as they could. All of the capital and the largest kingdom under the demons' rule directly where they had been residing had been thoroughly and remarkably made into a blindlessly loyal population. All except for one man of elvish background, who had been made into one who could earn the title as the loyalist thing alive..to her, and to her alone. Not her family, not their "superior lineage", not their rule.
To.
h e r.
The child was crowned king, and as the highest member of the court, the elvish man took over control until the child was conscious and deemed the honorary parent. With boiling rage and resentment for the child, he helped orchestrate an attack on the capital city by working with their enemies. A horrendous display of violence and destruction, not to actually destroy the throne, but to use as a distraction.
He repeated a fraction of Serphila's crime. A rip in space and time, and pushed the child through. Through the chaos he claimed the king had been taken by the enemies, and eradicated them.
As he resumed his role as acting king until he was found, he rewrote history. The Daughter Serphila, was now the High Goddess Serphila. An aimless act of violence was now painted as her glory. The narrative changed to that she knew the monsters were hiding in stars, it was righteous. Her destruction of the planet itself was to weed out those unworthy. She became a religious figure, from what he kept pushing to the people to subvert them, heightened to Godhood in the public image as the missing child's title was reduced back to "The prince. The missing heir, the last of the legacy."
War never haulted. With the demons' rule still in practice with no demons actually left on the throne, there was a chance for the first time in eons to have a fighting chance.

Sorry for those 12+ concerning posts I just experienced my first bad manic episode and I'm sorry to anybody I made worry for or by me, genuinely I am sorry. There was one portion I genuinely believed I was two different people in the same body at one point one of which wanted to kill me, and alot of the other ramblings was about that vent post I made forever ago about some guy was a dick to my best friends.
Here are some funny bits from the past 3(?) or so days if it helps this feel any lighter
I deleted hundreds of images off my camera roll but apparently was manic enough to think THIS was a good art ref for something, and then made a whole new pin board trying to get the confetti scam to work
