#30. Control Balance This one requires strength and sophisticated stabilizing strategies to support the body in the shoulder stand position while moving the arms and legs. Some intricate muscular counterbalancing goes on as the arms reach for the leg, and as you change sides. In the full classical version, you reach for the leg with both arms. Allison has chosen a slight modification, moving a single arm toward the leg. Whichever version you choose, maintain the height of the pelvis and balance of the spine throughout. Your weight should never bear down onto the neck! Feel it balanced across the back of the shoulders/upper back. ************************************* You might ask what purpose this exercise has in a functional context. While you might not ever do this precise movement in your daily life, the coordination and core integration required to do this well are valuable in understanding and practising whole body movement. It's not about individual muscles or parts. It's about how all those things work together to create fluid, well controlled movement. The body as an orchestra; with every element playing its part in the whole. #29. Rocking The first thing to work on in this advanced exercise is just getting into the rocking position! If that’s as far as you get, you’re still opening the front of the spine, shoulders and hips, while actively engaging the support of the abdominal wall and stabilizing the lumbar spine. ************************************ The rocking motion adds a whole new element of control and integration. Maintaining all the gorgeous opening you’ve created, you have to find the right timing for engagement of the hamstrings and abdominal muscles to generate the rocking motion. Allison makes this look easy. Be prepared - the first few times you try this, you might feel like a walrus!! #28. Seal & Crab Each of these exercises serve as a spinal massage while promoting flexibility and articulation, with the body in motion. Once again, the limbs are used as a moving, changing weight load. *********************************** In the seal, the arms/hands support and clap the legs together. This is more than quirky choreography! When the hands move the legs, a beautiful dissociation occurs between the pelvis and the legs. The hips and groin can release into what is often a more functional relationship for the pelvis, legs & spine. It takes practice and inner strength to balance on the shoulders and clap at the same time. *********************************** The crab offers its own challenges in the form of suspended moments - when the arms & legs extend long to switch, and when the spine curves forward to place the head gently on the mat. Poor support here can end in a face plant! #27. Boomerang The boomerang is all about spinal flexibility and articulation, with the body in motion, and the body parts used as weight load. That’s the official version. *********************************** This is an advanced exercise that requires great core integration, balance and fluidity. The perfect blend of deep core connection and psoas engagement will allow the legs to float off the floor without a big heave-ho. #20. Side-Kick A transition to side-lying changes the feel of things and adds an extra challenge to spinal stability and abdominal strength as the leg moves. A long and stable torso is key throughout. Make sure your torso is is not leaning forward and tipping backward as the leg "kicks." Keep the leg at the same level off the floor to the back and front. .*********************************** There is a lateral movement of the spine as the leg reaches back that involves a strong use of the transverse abdominals, obliques, and quadratus lumborum. It's really important not to lever off your elbow, or droop into it as this progresses. Remember, HOW you move matters. We're not just throwing the leg around here.
