Blaine Anderson & Kurt Hummel- Nicknames

Blaine Anderson and being 'B'

One of my favourite headcanons is that Kurt started calling Blaine 'B' pretty early on in their relationship when they were experimenting with pet names and still getting into the groove of being boyfriends.

I imagine it started with a sleepover, the door open of course and the two curled around each other when Blaine had a nightmare- a common occurrence for the two. By this point, Kurt had already become used to comforting him and holding him but for him, it had never gotten easier to see Blaine in so much pain and so scared and so his head tends to go into 'care-for-Blaine' mode where he can't think of anything else. He was petting Blaine's curls in worry, holding him close, when he began babbling reassurances like, "B, I'm here" and "It's ok, B, you're safe with me". Blaine calms down and the peace of the night from before continues.

Cut to the next morning, its early, perhaps too early for teenagers to be awake but they're just holding each other, basking in the silence and warmth of the early morning when Blaine begins to talk, groggy and leaning on Kurt's chest.

"Thank you for yesterday, I liked it"

Kurt's completely puzzled because he watched his boyfriend go through agony last night and he enjoyed it...? A part of him assumes its another one of Blaine's quirks that Kurt loves him so much for whilst another part is concerned. Blaine's almost laughing at the puzzlement on Kurt's face before he clarifies:

"I mean i liked it when you called me you know what."

Kurt's still pretty puzzled. 'Care-for-Blaine' mode left little to his memory as he was usually so trained on Blaine and it was rare that he fully remembered what he actually said in his worry but this time, he was curious about Blaine's refusal to repeat it and so dug a little deeper in hopes of remembering. And remember he did as he saw the little blush on Blaine's cheeks, the way he seemed bashful in preparation for Kurt to say it again and a smile had taken over Kurt's face as he repeated it.

"You mean when I called you, B?"

Cue Blaine's blush to only deepen and his head to find solace in the crook of Kurt's neck as he tried to hide away to avoid showing Kurt how much the nickname makes him swoon like never before. Kurt just watches him fondly and from then on it becomes a thing, a Klaine thing, that was just theirs and theirs alone. A cute little reminder of their love for each other whenever they said it and another sign of their adoration as Kurt tried to use it as much as possible:

"Can you get some more popcorn, B?"

"Come on, B! Beat Finn at Mario Kart, please!"

and the most heartfelt of all:

"I love you, B"

That nickname was something just for the two of them and yet it wouldn't be long before that wasn't the case and the nickname would extend further than the couple had ever expected, appearing in places they had never considered.

I'd say that it starts with Mercedes in an instance so inconspicuous that no one even notices it and yet it's there nonetheless and would mark a change in Blaine's role in the choir room and as part of the group.

It's another themed week with another assignment that the teenagers are throwing themselves into when Blaine's performing, putting his entire being into creating a spectacle of the performance that everybody is just eating up because it is of course Blaine Anderson.

I imagine there's chaos as the performance reaches it's height and everybody's shouting or singing in some capacity and its then that Mercedes joins the fray to shout, "Get it, B!". An exclamation that goes unheard by everyone, by Mercedes herself as she's heard Kurt say it a lot, but would start the nickname becoming a regular appearance in the choir room.

Maybe Sam's next with a:

"I'll work with B"

Followed by Finn:

(an evening at the Hudmel house)

"Is B coming over tonight?"

And even Puck during another Rachel Berry party extravaganza (more succesful than the last):

(wasted and watching Blaine slay at karaoke)

"B knows how to rock, dude!"

It's managed to become common place amongst the glee members and yet they're still all unaware at this phenomenon because in each of the instances, there's just too much going on or not the right people listening for anybody to realize what the nickname was becoming. And this trend would continue silently without anybody being truly aware until the icon herself, Santana, would use it and like everything she does, draw attention to it.

It's another day in the choir room, a more peaceful iteration of the group with a relatively low level of drama, and they're discussing song choices for regionals, passing around the options in piles of sheet music as they listen to Mr Schue add unnecessary commentary on everything. Santana's passing it to Blaine when she says, "Here, B" and the couple sitting next to her freeze.

Amongst the others, the nickname was normal, another alternative to address Blaine and so whilst they hadn't really processed where the change came from nor the nickname, its place in the choir room was ordinary so cue everyone being confused when Blaine and Kurt are just frozen at hearing the nickname from outside their relationship for the first time.

Obviously, Santana just thinks they're weird and makes a comment about it, carelessly and unaware of how big and strange this was for the couple, "What's going on with you gays?". Kurt obviously tries to save their dignity and the situation because even Mr Schue was beginning to take notice of the awkward encounter and they didn't need his input so he tries to clarify, drawing attention away from Blaine who's blushing from embarrassment at being caught off guard.

"What did you say Santana?"

Cue an eye roll from Santana who has no care for any sensitivity the boys reactions might suggest necessary who simply says, "I called him B. That's his name isn't it twinkle toes?" That's all the confirmation the couple need and save causing a fuss or irritating Santana any more, they just regain their composure and pretend like nothing had happened because they didn't want to make a fuss and the conversation they had would need to be between the two of them, intimate and quiet, not with the eyes of everyone in the choir room.

They'd have a discussion once they were in Kurt's bedroom though. A calm and personal talk as whilst it might not seem like a big deal, at the end of the day, it had been something just between the two of them that had expanded past that without their knowledge or permission and a symbol of trust that had almost been sullied with everybody else's use. The conversation would be communication at its finest and in the end, they would both agree that it was ok with Kurt being won over by Blaine's cute justification:

"That hearing it will always remind me of you and at least now I'll get that reminder even when you're not there."

From that discussion that none of the new directions ever find out about, the nickname would naturally appear everywhere with Mr Schue known to use it in the choir room:

"Solo's today will go to Rachel, Santana, B and Artie"

Carole known to use it as an endearment as the two cook together as a form of bonding:

"I used the recipe you gave me, B, and i had Burt raving about my cooking for a week. I wouldn't be surprised if you hear about it tonight as well!"

And of course from the man himself when he's sharing a tender moment with Blaine as his honorary father figure:

"You'll always have a place in our house, B"

So the name Blaine would become obsolete and when they're congratulating each other for their win at nationals, its not Blaine who they take their bow with but B who they had come to see as a valuable part of the team and who they loved for who he was.

(Not me taking a small headcanon and making it fit into the entirety of the glee canon because why not? Also, wanted to preface that I've seen this nickname in fanfictions a lot and I give credit to them for letting me know it existed and showing me how cute it could be for the two's relationship as that’s where all the inspiration came from.
