The Truth About Lying - A Short Film
Tumblr media
This project tells the story of Thea, a young woman whose distaste for vulnerability has ingrained in her an almost pathological lying habit. When her first semester of college begins with a cancer diagnosis that she is determined to keep to herself, a reluctant relationship with an estranged friend begins to unravel both Thea and her secret. This story examines the toll of emotionally isolating oneself and explores the good and the bad of facing our emotions.

Meet Rhett! A supporting character in the short film The Truth About Lying
Tumblr media
A skater with a case of senioritis and a nicotine addiction she is trying to kick, Rhett hangs out with Thea for rides and occasionally dispenses life advice.
Easy-going and cheeky, Rhett hides a thoughtful and reflective side under her blasé personality and goth exterior.

Meet Clare and Thea! The main characters in the short film The Truth About Lying.
Clare is sweet and responsible but often struggles with only seeing the world in black and white. She does not avoid the truth and likes to face problems head-on. Because of this, she and Thea have very different approaches to dealing with challenges, causing an estrangement in a once-strong friendship after the death of Thea’s mother. Clare is loyal, straightforward, and shy. This means that though Clare is very caring, she finds making friends difficult.
Still grieving from the loss of her mother and jaded by her father’s ability to move on so easily, Thea has discovered that it’s best to keep one’s feelings to oneself and fly below the radar. Hence, when Thea discovers in her first semester of college that she has cancer, she decides that it is best to keep this information to herself. Over the course of the film, a somewhat reluctant relationship with an old friend makes Thea question whether she is making the right choice. Thea is smart and observant but does not like showing emotion; she prefers to mask her feelings and sidestep the truth.
