When Steve went to go visit Peggy sixty six years after he crashed the plane into the Arctic he was not expecting her to look so old and frail. Her memory came and went and it hurt Steve to see her like this.

On one of her good days she dug up an old journal and handed it to Steve along with some other knickknacks that she had kept for all these years. He recognizes some as his own and some that were Bucky’s. His heart clenches painfully.

He takes the journal from her and asks, “What’s this?”

“Sergeant Barnes’ journal. I found it in his tent after we thought you both were gone…”

Steve swallows hard, softly running his hand over the aged cover.

He holds onto the journal for a couple of days before finally getting the courage to open it up. He skips to the last entry, takes a deep breath, and starts reading.

His heart breaks painfully as he reads. Tears form in his eyes and he blinks them away so he can continue reading to the end.

So Bucky loved him. Bucky was just as much in love with him as he was with Bucky. All those years he spent wondering and it could have happened. They could have been together. If only he reached out a little further. If only he could have grabbed his hand a little sooner. They could have been together. They could have lived a happy life together.

A sob rips free from his chest as he presses the journal against his chest.

“God, Bucky, I’m so sorry. I loved you. I still love you. I’m sorry I couldn’t save you. I hope you can forgive me.”

I saw this post and now all I can think about is young Derek being nonverbal and he hides peoples shoes when he likes them so they stick around longer–the more he likes you, the harder they are to find. Laura understands this and finds it funny to watch, especially when Derek practically shoves Peters shoes into his hands and Peter always thanks him for being so helpful (when really he’s telling him to f off).

One day, Sheriff Stilinski comes over with his kid and Derek hides Stiles’ shoes. They eventually have to leave without them because they’re hidden so well and it’s years before they find them.

After he rescues Steve from the river, parts of Bucky start breaking through the Winter Soldier and he doesn’t go back to HYDRA. In an effort to remember who he is and what he meant to Steve and what Steve meant to him, he ends up at the Smithsonian. Eventually he makes his way back to Steve, breaking in to his house and waiting until Steve returns from his run.

He can tell Steve is surprised to see him standing in the middle of his living room when he returns, yet he moves slowly and cautiously as to not frighten Bucky off.

“Bucky?” He whispers, looking into Bucky’s eyes.

Bucky doesn’t know why he wore the mask, maybe in an effort to conceal his identity in case someone other than Steve was there, or in case he called for backup? Maybe to make himself feel more comfortable knowing that Steve can’t see the full expressions on his face or what he is feeling? He’s still trying to make sense of them himself.

Slowly he steps forward until he has Steve backed against a wall. He’s slightly taller than Steve with his boots on so he looks down at him.

Steve is looking at him with bated breath. Probably wondering if this is Bucky standing before him or the Winter Soldier.

Bucky reaches out and gently grabs Steve’s right hand with his metal one.

“Stevie?” He whispers, voice rough from the lack of use.

Steve shivers. “Do- do you remember?” He asks, hesitantly.

Bucky shakes his head.

He still doesn’t remember everything and he still feels his mind could betray him at any moment but he knows that the man in front of him is safe. He’s home. He’s his Stevie and that’s all that matters right now.

“Okay, okay, that’s okay. We can figure it out together. We’ll figure it. Just… please don’t leave me again,” he says, reaching up and cupping the back of Bucky’s neck with his free hand.

They’ll figure it out. Bucky knows they will, as long as Steve is with him, so he slowly nods and he can feel Steve relax against him.

There’s always a lingering question that I ask myself, which is why do I, a cis bisexual woman, enjoy romance between two men so much?  

There are easy answers, like that it’s just fetishizing.  And like, I find men attractive, yes.  But I also find women attractive.  I don’t have a problem with enjoying het romance, assuming I can find good ones.  I enjoy stories with female characters I can relate to.

But there’s something much deeper at play, IMO.  A friend of mine who is a gender studies professor was the first person to point this out to me, but a lot of women enjoy m/m romance and gay porn because of the lack of women.  It removes a source of pressure and sexism.  Without any women present, you don’t have to constantly evaluate the sexism of their portrayal, or be reminded of negative experiences in your own life.  It allows women to experience romance and especially sexuality without all the baggage that comes with it in our patriarchal society.

This was recently illustrated to me rather dramatically.  I read a recommendation for a het romance.  And it sounded cute, and came highly recommended.  The tropes at play were fun.  Until I read a snippet and realized this was a romance between a woman and her boss.  I had a visceral negative reaction.  

Instantly I’m thinking of sexual harassment stories I’ve read and heard from other women. I’m thinking of how uncomfortable it would be to have your boss develop feelings for you.  How icky the power dynamics would be, etc.  

And then I realized…this wouldn’t bother me if it were two men.  Now, there’s no logical reason for that.  Sexual harassment is just as wrong when its object is a man.  But I know I’ve read fics with a similar premise and never thought about it.  Because when it’s two men I can accept this is just a light romance, a fantasy, meant to be fun and sexy and not to represent the real world.

But I can’t when it’s a het relationship.  There’s too much baggage there.  Too much societal history of abuse.  I can’t relax enough with the premise to enjoy that story.  

Now some people can.  And that’s fine.  And some people are never going to be okay with power imbalances like that regardless of gender.  That’s also fine.  I don’t think having either reaction makes one morally superior.  It’s okay to just enjoy light entertainment for what it is without going into deep analysis.

But it’s much more difficult for me, and I think for many women, to relax and enjoy romantic and sexual stories when they involve female characters.  We’ve been burned too many times by shitty depictions, by shallow role models, by abuse portrayed as romantic.  We have developed a stress response, a trauma response to heterosexual romance.  We are hyper-reactive to a wide variety of triggers in regards to it.   But removing women from the equation makes stories safer for us.  And maybe it shouldn’t?  In an ideal world?  But for many of us, that’s the truth.

The fact that big corporations feel they have to conform to the point of at least appearing to be supporting pride feels like a win tbh, and it does help spread the message of acceptance even if they are doing it for profit or so they don't get roasted online. Made better by the fact that we are aware of what they're doing and can knowingly choose to support small businesses instead, and they can't get mad about the lack of sales or stop selling pride merch without looking like hypocrites and receiving backlash.

So if they are going against their own views just for profit and public pressure, then we can choose to view this as being as satisfying as it is frustrating.

In conclusion: Go ahead and fly that flag to keep your rep up. I hope you're mad about it while those of us with morals are chilling, enjoying life and supporting equality for real 🤣

corporations trying to profit off of queer people by showing their support for only one month of the year is bad

and

it’s fun to watch conservatives get pissed that they can’t shop at target anymore because the big bad rainbows will corrupt their children :(

and

the existence of rainbow capitalism in the first place proves that society is now in a place where supporting queer people is the more profitable and thus more popular opinion and that means something

are all viewpoints that can absolutely coexist
