Time For Marvel Time Time
68 posts
50 something years have passed in "real time" since the birth(ish) of the modern Marvel universe but in the timeline of the 616 Universe it's only been like a decade and change. This tumblr is dedicated to highlighting the absurd fun of Marvel Time, taking a peak at the moments that completely betray what the actual year is and highlight the bizarre, head splitting insanity of the compressed Marvel time line.

Sooo follow this logic: Captain America saves George H.W. Bush George H.W. Bush kills JFK George W. Bush causes 9/11 Captain America killed JFK and caused 9/11 Thanks Steve! (Also, this is incredibly hilariously in retrospect coming as it did a handful of months before 9/11. The idea that George W. wouldn’t read a file because it was marked “secret”. Granted, the notion of him being able to read much of anything at all is fanciful, but still, an idea of him as some kind of actual, reasonable, honorable person is just too rich for my blood governor.) Not strictly “Marvel time” in line with the spirit of this tumblr, but!  Let’s all pause for a moment and take a look at a 2001 alternate reality where Hillary Clinton is President. Maybe this can be considered “Marvel Time” in terms of, now, we’ve reached a point, where this kind of (what some would read as) optimistic speculative fiction, is probably more or less gone from the mainstream. Just sort of leapt out at me. Makes a person wonder. Makes one think of the past and the futures people thought were coming.

Ok, granted, Bat Out Of Hell is from 1977, but I think the notion of giving someone a Meatloaf compact disc is totally 2001. Or at least it’s the last time you could reference it in a mainstream comic. From Cable #89

From X-men Vol.1 (2, but I mean, 1 but 2 according to Marvel) by Chris Claremont and  Thomas Derenick Nice bit of Marvel time here. Storm saying that it was 10 years earlier when Xavier found her in Cairo, this comic is from 2001, Storm’s first appearance was in 1975. Marvel time everybody.

From “Iron Man: Bad Blood” by David Michelinie and Bob Layton You see Zack Snyder? It’s not hard for a superhero to not kill people. And this is Iron Man who’s a fairly big time asshole. #offtopic

From “Avengers Infinity” #4 by Roger Stern & Sean Chen “Instant Message”? What year is it? 1890? No, it’s 2000. I remember “Instant Messenger”. That was the tops. But now we can live clear video chat with the moon from our VR face plates.

From “Iron Man: Bad Blood” #1 by David Michelinie and Bob Layton Not *strictly* Marvel Time, but I think the argument can be made. From the first issue of the super good Iron Man miniseries “Bad Blood”, we can see a little easter egg giving a shout out to one of the best cartoons of all time which was definitely in its prime in the year 2000 I tell you what. (though, real talk, I think the show was in its prime pretty much from Season 2 until it ended)

From “Peter Parker: Spider-Man” Vol. 2 #19 by Howard Mackie & John Romita Jr. Aw. Remember when this is what the world envisioned “hacking” to be? Before peoples credit card info or gmail passwords got stolen en masse, or before every celebrity who’s ever taken a nude selfie got belched on to the internet for everyone to see? What an innocent, lovely memory of hacking. Anyway, yeah, it’s the year 2000. *Sniff* Single tear for the death of innocence and pierced eyebrow slacker type hackers *Sniff*

We’re back! After an absurd time away. More time for Marvel Time time! Back to examining the absurdity of Marvel time through year specific references in books! From Captain Marvel Vol.4 #10 by Peter David and ChrisCross (Anyone who’s ever read this tumblr before knows that PAD is the king of year specific pop culture references) “I’m super thanks for asking” South Park reference? This is from 2000, South Park Bigger, Longer and Uncut is from 1999. It fits babies. Marvel time.

Another great Marvel Time marker. From a Peter David Hulk comic from 1993, here Betty is referring to the start of the Hulk comics in 1962, yet within continuity it's only been a few years. Marvel Time.
