I love the TMA fandom, don't get me wrong, but does anyone else feel like the headcanons are kinda really strongly enforced? Like I'm not sure how to explain it, but like if anyone ever strays from the common headcanons then the majority of comments on posts will be about how they portrayed the character wrong and badly.

I really enjoy the representation of the characters in the show, and I do generally really enjoy the fanon version of the characters, but some people seem to think its inherently wrong to do it any other way, for example, when people draw Jon as white, or Martin as slender, I see so much hate directed to the artist, which is wild because the characters don't even really have canon appearances, and even if its different to the usual designs and common headcanons, it shouldn't be inherently wrong to portay them differently.

Also, characters like Tim in S1 are basically just assigned personalities. Tim doesn't really have very many appearances in S1 at all, and those which he do don't entirely line up with the personality given to him by fans. This, once again isn't a bad thing, but I think its just kinda interesting how the fandoms headcanons tend to get so prevalent that they're accepted over canon sometimes.

All of this being said, I don't really have a massive issue with all of this. In all honesty, the TMA is a really nice fandom, and I do enjoy being here :]

Notes on ep.1 Angler Fish

Masterpost Statement by: Nathan Watts Statement from: April 22 2012 Involved entities: Stranger

Pre-statement: -Jon complains about Gertrude's lack of organisation and digitisation -Says he is met with "significant audio distortions" when he attempts to record digitally

Statement: -Takes place in March 2010 (Watts says it took place a few years before giving a statement, but John Fellows goes missing in March 2010 and it seems that was at the same time as Nathan Watts' encounter -At a party in Edinburgh College, to celebrate his friend, Michael MacAulay being accepted to do a masters in earth sciences. -Encounter occurs while he's walking home, drunk. The streets are steep so he takes a fall, and rolls a cigarette to calm himself -Asked by figure in alley "Can I have a cigarette" Described as having no intonation -Watts rolls another, but refuses to go into the alley, instead waiting for the figure to come out and get it -Figure described as swaying, having mouth closed while speaking, and having their feet off of the floor, as though held up in the air instead of standing -Watts takes out phone to use flashlight to get a better look -The figure "Folded at the waist and vanished back into the darkness as though a string had gone taught and pulled it back into the alley" -Search in morning, found nothing save for a sole Marlboro Red cigarette. -Saw that John Fellows went missing. In picture on missing poster, pack of Marlboro Red sticking out of pocket.

Post statement: -Missing people from that area were: Jessica McEwan (nov 2005), Sarah Baldwin (aug 2006), Daniel Rawlings (dec 2006), Ashly Dobson (May 2008), Megan Shaw (June 2008) -Baldwin and Shaw are both confirmed as smokers -Dobson sent a picture to a sister called Siobhan with caption "Check out this drunk creeper lol" (which Jon pronounced as EL O EL ofc) and appeared blank, until contrast increased, where a long, thin hand was visible, and appeared to be beckoning.

My thoughts: -So this is the first one of these posts I've ever done :D I can't really link other posts rn cuz there aren't any, but I will as appropriate as I make more. I'm probably gonna make a list of all characters, where any that are reoccurring will get their own page -I'm still only on my second relisten, so I've defiantly missed things, and will probably continue to do so -I'm excluding things I don't think are relevant, but I'm not always the best as judging what is and isn't relevent

Considering making a personal lil wiki thingy on Tumblr next time I listen through TMA, like I'd take notes on the characters showing up and my opinions on what's going on, and then I could link related posts like a wiki, but worse and made by a teenager on Tumblr in the midst of their hyperfixation

Is that something people do? Would anyone be interested in this?? I really wanna do this but I know it would be a big project and idk if its a good idea honestly lol

Ok so I've started listening to The Magnus Protocol and what in the everliving fuck is going on???? Why are my little guys all computer voices? Why did Gerry and Gertrude just appear to say hi? Why does he call her Geegee??? Why does Celia seem to know so much? wHAT IS GOING ON???!?!?!?!?!?

I got a confessions to make: I hate happy endings, like at all. I'm fine with vaguely hopeful endings or really tragic ones, but I just can't do proper happy endings for some reason. Whenever I'm reading a fanfic of any kind, if characters end up in a happy, functioning relationship (cough cough jon and martin) without at least some kind of tragedy, the last few chapters, or whenever they've actually gotten together, are really difficult to enjoy

Like, if a character has a bad ending in a show (Sasha and Tim are the ones that come to mind) I'll primarily read fluff and them being happy, but even then, if there's no conflict at the ending I just can't get as invested as if there's just a tad bit of misery in there to stop anyone coming out actually happy

I still don't like when they die though. They suffer more when they're still alive /hj

Hi, about the Jonathan Sims Jane Prentiss post. Elaborate.

Omgomgomg someone asking me to talk about the Magnus Archives!! Thank you thank you so much!!

Sorry, this took a while, I knew I wouldn’t be able to get out all of my thoughts on my phone, so I had to look for my laptop :)

While listening to the absolutely incredible MAG 032 – Hive, I felt that there was a strong connection between Jon and Jane’s stories (obligatory mention on how similar their names are because it feels weird in my brain).

One of the main things that really stood out to me was during Jane’s desperate recollection of her memories, Jane tries to figure out when she first heard the song of the hive, she starts with when she saw the webs in the corners of the attics entrance (which she mentions having a “different song to the hive”, I love this detail!!) to as far back as her childhood, being told by her classmate about blackheads, which she says “that image lodged in my mind forever”, she mentions as a child, she used to watch the worms climb to surface after the rain.

I think she was hearing the song then, it was hard to come to that as a definite belief for me due to her muddled her perspective from already going through the process of becoming what we would see her become, as she seems to switching from “Jane” to “The Hive” in the statement. But my belief of it comes from her breakdown over the ant infestation at her job, I want to link this to Jon’s fear of spiders, because well obliviously you don’t get such intense breakdowns over a thing that brings you comfort, so intense she was fired. Both of them gained intense fears from their childhood, Jane must’ve been terrified from that reaction, but I think if Jane experienced something on the same scale as Jon, the Hive, which we already know could dizzy her memories, could suppress that, maybe giving her relief as a manipulation tactic?

Bringing this back to Jon, there is his experience from A Guest for Mr. Spider, which we know gave him a massive fear of spiders (and very not-dooming guilt), his reaction after reading Jane’s statement is.. Well bad. I think that it is because of the similarity from Jane’s damning since childhood to his own is what causes him to admit he KNOWS it’s not natural, he can’t will up the denial that he hides behind, he even needs to lie down after it.

BUT here’s the thing that drives me up the wall about these two! I think it’s not the similarity in their stories that connects them, it is their fates. Imagine if, you are behind five, maybe six, walls of denial and logic, to keep yourself safe from your guilt and your fears, hearing a story so close to what is your own and she turns into a monster.

Mr. Jonathan “I don’t want to a mystery” Sims, who has spent a while hunting down her story to solve her mystery, only to find that.

Jane’s fears from her childhood found her and used her body to kill and terrorise.

Jon must’ve been terrified, we’ve heard about two people dying from the worms Jane spreads and it now becomes clear she has basically become possessed. She literally has that noted as one of what seems to be one of her last true actions, before she is used as a tool. Something I want to point out now because I see so many people forget this, Jon cares about others so much. The most clear example being in Colony, when after getting Martin’s statement, he lets him stay in the archives, even saying he’d asked Elias for extra security, he doesn’t turn away from the truth (that he KNOWS) and scoff at the man he is currently trying to intimidate. No, he helps him because one of the main traits of Jonathan Sims is he really cares, no matter how scared he is. The idea that he could be turned into a monster and used to kill and terrorise people as well to be turned into something he’s not (sorry, that is a hunger games reference.) is horrific, especially as he was currently being attacked by the person who’s story he can so strongly relate to.

And then when he does inevitably turn into a monster, just like him and Jane were always going to, what should be horrifying him (just like Jane’s song and the fact it made her feel loved despite it all) felt so right.

It was always going to end like this for Jon, for Jane, and Carlos Vittery from Arachnophobia but there’s less to say about him (sorry).

In short, I say Jane’s memory haunted Jon for a long time, I think his breakdown in season 2 makes a lot of sense for a lot of reasons, but also because of the fear that he could be turned into a monster just like her, and that chance were going up higher every day, since he was eight.

Me when the story that obviously isn’t going to have a happy ending doesn’t have a happy ending

This is probably an unpopular opinion but I don't like Jon and Martin as a couple

I get that they've got a fun dynamic, and I do admit I did enjoy their whole thing in s1, but I don't really think they're a very good couple.

In s5, Jon and Martin are together in a relationship, but they are in no way healthy in my opinion. The amount of things they hide from each other and lie to each other about is way more than it should be for a healthy couple. This is especially true for Jon I think.

He tells Martin SO LITTLE it genuinely infuriates me. He constantly leaves him in the dark about important information, sometimes putting him in danger, and just expects Martin to forgive him, which he usually does. There is no way that's actually a healthy relationship

Even at the very end, on the very final episode, the last conversation they have is made of Jon breaking a promise to Martin, and Martin being annoyed about it for a bit, before just accepting it as he always seems to

I like them as characters, and I don't hate the ship, but I personally just dislike it.

Ok I've just finished TMA and I need somewhere to get my thoughts out so new sideblog it is lol.

It was such a tragic story. I mean, its easy enough to call all of the characters just silly lil guys, but there's just so much going on. Jon was treated so awfully, manipulated and kidnapped and just having horrible things happening to him time and time again while he wanted nothing but to know the truth, and to know if he was really still a human. In the entire time of the show, he never had a real friend, and even in s5 when he was with Martin, they never confided in each other properly, never really did more than just try to get through whatever they needed to get through.

Jon didn't do himself any favours with how he treated himself and those around him at times, but he still deserved better than he got. I didn't even truly realise the extent of how tragic his story was until I saw it all lined up. He was never really part of the group, he never really trusted anyone, he was never really trusted, he kept getting kidnapped and attacked, even by those who should have been his friends

I just wanna give him a hug
