Dance music has spawned an incredible amount of sub genres and scenes to a point where it is almost impossible to keep up with them all. We thought it would be good try and trace back some of the more notable dance music scenes to a single tune that ignited the fires that followed. The show must go on - Dance music parties and festivals you can still enjoy in Lockdown
As we move into the summer months thoughts turn to all of the festivals and live events that countless music fans would have been hoping to attend. With classic Glastonbury coverage on the radio and television over the last weekend it鈥檚 hard not to lament a summer that will pass without hanging out in a field, on a terrace or club with the hottest sounds pumping from a soundsystem.
This is sadly the situation we find ourselves in and it鈥檚 important to remember who is being most hardest hit by this. Everyone from promoters, DJs, artists and the army of support roles that rely on a bumper summer of events will be finding life financially very hard right now. Large parts of the globe are still in the kind of lockdown that prevents any notable event from taking place, so there will be no festivals, large parties, euphoric club nights or live gigs for any time soon - 2020 will be the year when everything stopped.
There however is a growing groundswell of activities by promoters and artists taking place across the web. From live impromptus sets, to larger charity events or curated retrospective collections, there is a phoenix that is starting to rise from the flames. These grassroots won鈥檛 replace the void left in the arts by the pandemic but there are signs of green shoots that will hopefully continue to grow within an industry that has shown how adaptable it can be, all it needs is love and support by the millions of dance music fans on a global scale. Some clubs are starting to open with Switzerland being one of the first places to allow their venues to welcome clubbers with such as Weetamix returning to allow up to 100 people to come and dance with social distancing and a midnight curfew. Whilst locations like Germany have banned large events up until the end of October and there鈥檚 little sign of clubs opening up any time soon in the UK.
Below we鈥檝e picked out a few notable events taking place over the next month. All we ask is that you consider making a donation to support these endeavours. The Lockdown has meant lots of passionate artists who rely on a steady income to perform online, often for free. There has been a lot of coverage in the media on the impact of COVID on the arts, especially theatres and hospitality, little has been said about nightlife and festival culture. What this lockdown must not result in is the increased normalisation that indulging in the arts is something you can have for free. So think about that takeaway you didn鈥檛 order, or that night out that was cancelled and send a much appreciated donation to artists and promoters who have entertained you in the past and hopefully will again in the future.

Pioneers of UK Electro
The unique sound of the TR808 has been very prominent again in recent years with a resurgence of both blazing hot and subtle, melodic Electro in clubs and on the airwaves. Labels such as CPU Recordings and Cultivated Electronics - to name but a few - have led the charge with a new generation of Electro labels and producers. Leap back to over 30 years ago and a similar raw breed of individuals and groups were cutting their teeth on a burgeoning UK Electro scene. Whilst today鈥檚 sounds may seem more stripped back, minimalist and taking influence from a wider variety of sources including Detroit and Berlin there is a lineage going to Britain's forebears of the sound. Focusing on select band of 1980鈥檚 releases, they were different from the offerings coming out of New York鈥檚 Hip Hop scene. They may not be a direct influence on the artists of today but they did very subtly melt slowly through the collective underground British consciousness as we moved on mass from the 808 to the 909 and eventually revisited our love of the 808 again.
Hip Hop鈥檚 first full scale exploration onto UK shores sometime around 1982 with Malcom McClaren鈥檚 heralding the charge with his unique take on the still embryonic scene. Suddenly thousands of kids were hooked on to the sights and sounds coming out of New York through the eye candy of Buffalo Gals on Top of the Pops. Whilst that amalgamation of sound and vision captured our attention it was the futurist vision of Afrika Bambaataa and such as The Jonzun Crew that inspired a small group of producers to emulate the fresh Electro appearing in UK record shops from across the Atlantic. The 808 driven tracks had much in common with the UK鈥檚 already intertwined love for black and electronic music from the likes of Kraftwerk who were catalysts in prompting Bambaataa and his peers to propagate their own sound. Whilst the UK were quick to embrace three of the four elements through DJing, graffiti and breakdancing, the fourth - rapping took a little longer to perfect aside from notable pioneering artists including Dizzy Heights, Junior Gee and Richie Rich. It would take until around 1987 before the likes of The London Posse and the Demon Boyz among others for UK Rap to find its own voice (excuse the pun). Prior to that the burgeoning UK Hip Hop scene had created its own take on the US Electro sound and to this day does not get enough respect or attention for its efforts.

Best Documentaries About Dance Music
We wrote an article a couple of years ago that looked at some of the best films about dance music and clubs. In recent years there have been an explosion in shorter documentaries and films that celebrate four on the floor culture. Pretty much every genre and angle around dance and urban music has been explored via celluloid in some way or another. With people's attention spans shrinking, these documentaries are perfect to keep you entertained whilst travelling on the train or when you have a few minutes to spare with a bag of popcorn.
Greg Wilson and Colin Curtis - Return to Legend
The ain't Chicago: UK House according to the artists who lived it
Tonka Soundsystem Documentary
Moodyman: A Detroit Enigma
I was there when: House took over the world
Exploring Ukraine's underground rave revolution
