Don't think about Trelawney picking Fred Weasley to be the one to die in his first diviation class and him and his brother laughing about it.
Trelawney always picks someone in each class who will die, they all say. It's nothing to worry about, they all say.

I fell off a ladder today at work and yelled 'whooopa' as I fell. Everyone was very concerned but I was too busy laughing at myself to notice the blood... anyway I'm fine, I just think I'm very funny.

When the avengers tells other superheroes that their best distraction is Tony Stark, they’re like “oh yeah cause he’s hot”
well that’s a theory but he’s actually their best distraction because he’s capable to talk about anything for 3 hours straight without breathing
Villains can’t stop listening

Okay whilst Unsteady Ground isn't exactly funn right now, I am having a lot of fun with the ways they're all dealing with their PTSD. (Spoilers below for part 2!)
James (as ever) is putting himself in the firing line and not giving two shits about the fact that he'll probably die. Despite the fact that litterally all of the problems between him and Regulus are about the fact that James doesn't gaf if he dies, he continues to do it. Because he blames himself for litterally every death that has happened since the start of the story and he thinks the only way to redeem himself is to throw himself on the sword.
Sirius is regressing back into his 'protect Regulus at all costs' mindset (not that he ever really left it, but I think he found a sick kind of comfort when Regulus was locked up on the Elder because at least he was out of harms way (also, Regulus probably would have been released from lock up when he turned eighteen becayse he hadn't exactly done anything wrong apart from be born)) BUT he's also planning to take the earliest opportunity to fking bolt the second he deems Regulus 'safe'. Sirius longs for freedom and that's what Remus offers him, an excuse to run away once the war is won.
And Regulus is fking hallucinating the ghost of his dead best friend and pushing EVERYONE awway from him because he thinks he'll get them killed or hurt (which in fairness, SPOLIERS, he did kill Barty and he did send James into the Mountain, so valid). But he's acting super irrational and trying to fill the massive gap that James left whilst having Bellatrix whispering in his ear.
Remus is in and out of addiction and just desperate to prove himself worthy (because he doesn't really understand how he managed to convince Sirius to love him, but hell now he has it he wants to keep it)
Mary.... Mary's been wrestling with feeling like a cop out since the start of Part 2. She wanted to believe she was safe with Lily, but ofc she wasn't and now she feels even worse because it was her fault that the Mounatin ever got to test the blood of the 49 in the first place when she saved Lily.
Evan is quite litterally drowning himself in work because our boy LOVES a project and he can't be alone with his thoughts (SPOILERS, or allow Barty's death to have been for nothing).
And then there's all the characters that don't have POVs (or haven't had them in a while). Effie is going through the five stages of grief in every conversation and Lily and Snape have their own whole thing going on offscreen.
All that to say I'm having a lot of fun rn drafting up the latter bits of Part 2 and trying to leave everyone where they need to be for Part 3.

I wish it was 2012 and I was reading avengers tower fics staying up too late.
I’d even take 2016 when I was reading Peter going on a field trip to stark tower

I might be genuinely the only person who thinks this, but in my opinion, Jegulus makes PERFECT sense with canon.
Honesty, I think past Jegulus is what makes Jily an actually good ship (please hear me out guys)
There’s genuinely SO much evidence on how Jegulus could’ve happened
1. This is pretty obvious, but they went to school at the same time
2. They both had Sirius in common, which already gives them a reason to interact
3. In the books, when Harry finds out his dad (James) was shitty to Snape, he has his whole existencial crisis about his dad being a bully, and why his mom (Lily) would marry James if he was an asshole. So he asks Sirius and Remus why she married him, and they said at some point James just. Changed.
And what makes WAY MORE SENSE and teaches a MUCH better lesson than “James got over his bad morals purely for the girl he was an asshole to and after years of begging her to go out, she finally cracked and the popular bully ended up with the girl ☺️” is that James changed because he met Regulus.
It’s pretty easy to infer that James didn’t like Snape because of his blood supremacist beliefs. Did this excuse his bullying? No, absolutely not. But it’s what actually makes sense for a well written teenage boy. That righteous indignation and black and white thinking makes WAY more sense than “I don’t like this guy because my crush likes him”
So rather than some invisible force making him tolerable enough that Lily would just. Forgive him for years of torment. He could have met Regulus. Falling in love with a death eater would give him SO much more perspective on how complicated things actually were. And losing Regulus would definitely make him both more empathic and mature. As well as less likely to bully Snape. I think THAT is what Lily would be attracted to. Someone who actually understands the nuance of the world they live in.
And loving Regulus is the perfect (and most plausible) way for someone as privileged as James to learn.

Fanfiction is so silly. I am playing with my dolls and people are coming over to watch. Some of them even clap and give me compliments. And when I'm done playing, I can go and watch other people play with their dolls.

tbf on closer inspection there is a very specific chapter that is the last time a few of the people who commented on every chapter commented and you know what, fair enough. It was a bit of a diabolical move on my part
I was really spoiled in the early days of Unsteady Ground with a consistent like 10 comments every chapter and now I get like none... where did you gooooo, come back! I miss you!!!!

I am aiming to get Part 2 complete and posted before July 20th because I'm away from then until the end of August, but before then I am also moving house and finishing out my current work contract, so we shall see!
