yknow i always see people complaining that mary poppins returns has no plot and that's why it's worse than the original. my dad was telling me this earlier. "the plot is that they lose the shares, and they find it in five minutes at the end of the movie," he said. "none of the adventures further the plot."

which, yes, you could say the adventures don't further the plot. but... there are multiple plots to this movie. there's the "main" plot, or what i call it in my head, the "physical, tangible" plot. the banks need the shares, mary takes the kids on adventures and sets it up so they find the shares, they save the house, tada, done! this is the only plot my dad, and a lot of harsh movie critics, see.

but the real plot of mary poppins returns isn't the physical plot. it's not about finding the shares, not really. the real "main" plot of the movie... is the emotional one.

michael is grieving and his children take up the responsibilities (aka grow up too early) in order to help him. then, mary comes along and shows the children that's it's okay to just... be kids and have fun and use their imaginations. it's okay that their mother is lost, because she's not ever truly lost. and then the kids teach this to michael. mary helps them find the shares, yes, but more importantly, she helps the banks find childhood again.

what i find interesting is that the 1964 movie... didn't really have a "plot," either? there is, dare i say, even less of a plot. of course, here i'm talking about the physical plot. neither of the movies take up much time with it.

both of the movies spend more time with the emotional arcs of their characters than the situations those characters are in. and yet... harsh critics of mary poppins returns claim that it's just a shameless, nostalgic repeat of the original, because "all of the (physical) story beats are the same. the original was much better than this soulless cash grab! if you liked this movie, you're just blinded by nostalgia!" they say nothing about the real, emotional plot of mary poppins returns. and they seem to forget that the original was just the same in terms of favoring emotional plot in its runtime.

it just leaves me wondering... who are the more blindly-nostalgic ones here?
